Customers flock to NWA Lancaster for its popular Monday morning sale.
Spring Lambs
A short entry after last weeks Easter show, selling to £174 and 378p/kg for Texel cross and Suffolk cross from WN&D Smith & Sons, Cockerham.

Prime Hoggs
As promised additional buyers in attendance and keen to return again, attracted by the quality and quantity consistently forward at this popular Monday morning sale.
An SQQ average of 319p/kg today, with 75% of the sale being heavy weights averaging 310p/kg and super heavies 290p/kg, all in a market average of 305p/kg to include hoggs with mature teeth.
Top of the sale today was Beltex cross hoggs from Cornthwaite Moors Ltd, Hambleton selling at £183 and £182, with others £180 from SH&LE Birkett, Nether Kellet. Well bred and finished heavies were generally £162 to £175. Best of the heavies were 350p/kg from SH&LE Birkett, with others 320p/kg to 340p/kg.
Standard weights sold to £167 for Texel cross from AG Butler, Hambleton with others £166 from KA Purtill, Wigan and most £148 to £162. KA Purtill, Wigan topped the section selling Beltex cross at 385p/kg, with others 382p/kg from M&S Purtill, Wigan.
Better end hoggs were 345p/kg to 365p/kg.
Hill bred hoggs sold to £174 and 335p/kg for Cheviots, £164 and 356p/kg horned, £153 and 322p/kg Mule / Masham.

Hoggs now cutting their teeth are now required to be identified and sold separately this week, selling to £154 and 314p/kg.

A plainer show of cull sheep generating a very respectable average of £130. Continental ewes sold to £248 for Texels from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton with others to £214 from JW Thwaites, Tebay and £210 from M Beresford, Kirkby in Furness. Other mediums were £160 to £180, with the smaller end £130 to £150. BFL sold to £237 from T Ayrton & Sons, Over Wyresdale who also sold medium Mules to £158, with other smaller end Mules £130 to £140. Cross bred hill ewes sold to £144. Cull rams to £155 for Beltex from G Beresford & Son, Kirkby in Furness.

Still plenty of interest in sheep with lambs at foot. Strongest singles sold to £310 (£155/life) for Texel cross ewes with Texel cross lambs from J Shanley, Nateby with a ring full of four crop plus Cheviot Mules with singles Texel lambs to £252 from Stockdale Farm, Sedbergh. Mule ewes with singles sold to £305 from DC Miller, Claughton on Brock who sold Masham and Mules ewes with twins to £330. Several hill ewes forward today saw Welsh ewes with Texel cross lambs at £192.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Pigs, Prime Hoggs, Cast Sheep & Sheep with Lambs at Foot, Tuesday 22nd April 2025.
Pigs
76 prime and store pigs sold to £240, this paid for a trio of prime gilts from John Critchley, Preston with a further two from this home at £235. Pence per kilo was topped by W Stamper, Chipping selling four gilts to 218p/kg. Stores sold to £215 again from W Stamper, Chipping with weaners reaching £82 from A Ryder, Ainstable.
PRIME LAMBS & HOGGS
‘Perky, Peppy and Progressing’
Prime hoggs see a nice lift in trade at Junction 36. Both fat hoggs and spring lambs experienced vigorous bidding action today at North West Auctions.
The top price of the day was for a single Texel hogg from K Little, Grange Over Sands which sold for £210. Other Texels sold to the £190 mark from Messrs Carruthers, Kendal. In specification weight sheep were of the highest demand once again. 44kg Beltexs from PW&D Swindlehurst, Kendal sold to £170. 42 kg Beltexs sold to £161 from Messrs Mason, Carnforth. Lighter hoggs also a strong trade, with 37kg Texels selling to £141 for a pen of three from Messrs Bowes, Barrow in Furness. Todays SQQ average was 331p/kg, with the overall levelling out at 316p/kg. A plainer show of cull sheep today, sold to an exceptionally fast trade averaging a tremendous £144. Strongest ewes were £250 to £270, topping at £285 for Suffolks from RA Batty, Haversham. Medium and best first cross were £210 to £240. Mules sold to £244 for Cheviot Mules from M Allen, Carnforth with North Country Mules £202 from WH&G Hodgson, Patton. Others regularly £178 to £190. A slightly smaller show today, but trade on the whole held firm. Being the sale after last weeks show meant that there was an absence of some of the show type sheep, however there was still some top quality to suit all buyers.
Topping todays trade once again was G&KM Atkinson with two pens of Mule shearlings making £400 and £402. Mules were the most in demand commodity today all round, Mule hoggs were also sort after following last weeks flyer, with two pens of ten with Suffolk lambs making £285 each. Mule ewes were topping out at £330, courtesy of TW Wilson and H Cook, both with good runs of sheep.
A special mention also goes to Matt Allinson with a smashing pen of twelve Texel cross ewes with singles making £290 and another pen at £385.

A further twenty seven bullock were over £2500. Black and white sold to £2180 (x5) from A&MI Robinson, Orton. Heifers a solid trade, selling to £2580 (x2) for Briths Blues from R&DM Rossall & Son, Pilling. Simmental sold to £2300 from JB Moore, Allithwaite and Aberdeen Angus to £2300 (x5) from I&ME Askew, New Hutton. Montbeliardes sold to £2220 from V&S Fitzell, Much Hoole with a further twenty four heifers over £2000. The sale incorporated the monthly sale of stirks with these considered an unbelievable trade, selling to £1620 for three Limousin bullocks from Alan Thompson, Carnforth. A pen of seven Aberdeen Angus bullocks also sold to £1620 from G&D Ball, Great Eccleston with a pair of Simmental bullocks from WJ&EA Woodhouse, Nateby to £1600 at ten months old. OTM Cattle
The weekly sale of OTM cattle saw numbers back up to a pleasing show of 82 through the bottom ring, trade would be very similar on the week, with the cattle being a plainer show than previous weeks. OTM steers would see the top trade of the day, topping at £2653 for a British Blue from JD EM JA Atkinson, Kendal while OTM Friesians steers achieved £2185 from H Hesketh & Sons, Longton. All steers today averaged 338p/kg.
A handful of OTM bulls, all Friesian bred, sold to £2525 from PW&JM Norris & Son, Hornby with others to 329.5p/kg from EJ Hodgson, Lambrigg. Cast bulls averaged 232p/kg.
Friesian cows saw a top of £2340 from H&SD Cornthwaite, Nateby with PW&JM Norris, Hornby not far behind at £2333.
Other Friesian cows over the £2000 mark from RR&JA Knowles, Docker, Pickervance Farms, Roseacre and Kelsall & Wood, Scotforth. All Friesian cow today averaged 237p/kg and topped at 279.5p/kg from Pickervance Farms, Roseacre.
OTM heifers saw a sharp trade, with beef bred topping at £2240 for an Aberdeen Angus from TJ Robinson, Milnthorpe or 369.5p/kg. Friesian heifers not far behind at £2239 from WS Burrow Ltd, Silverdale with other Friesian heifers at £2172 from Kelsall & Wood, Scotforth. OTM heifers averaged 325p/kg.
Beef bred cows from EJ Ward & Son, Nether Kellet sold to £2138 or 309.5p/kg for a Limousin. With other Limousin over 300p/kg from RM Wilson, Settle. Aberdeen Angus cows to £2153 or 299p/kg from EW&A Bradshaw, Stalmine. All OTM cows averaged 246p/kg. An overall average today of 272.8p/kg for all cows sold.
