J36 MONTHLY COLLECTIVE MACHINERY SALE Wednesday 24th June The monthly sale of machinery saw 863 lots forward with a wide selec on of items on oer Larger items included within the sale were a Ford 4000 Tractor, NH 90 4wd Tractor, Welger RP245 Baler, New Holland 740 Baler and 4m Pasture Topper.

Seasonal items experienced keen bidding with mowers, haybobs, balers and wrappers reaching full value.

Livestock equipment saw a Graham Edwards Trailer sell at ÂŁ1800 and a heavy duty ca1le crush sell at ÂŁ1500.

Shearing machines ÂŁ205 and sheep scales ÂŁ350.

A large range of small tools & items a1racted a large crowd of buyers with well maintained items easiest sold.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 19th June CAST/FEEDING COWS, OTM & CLEAN CATTLE It was good to see a larger show of 104 cast cows put before a full ringside of buyers. Topping the sale was F & IM Po1er, Grayrigg with Limouisin and Charolais Heifers, both realising 199.5ppk. Top price per head came from M Crowe & Son, Grange over Sands, with a Limousin bull totalling £1390.50.

Again all classes sharper this morning, with black and white cows selling to a top of 159.5ppk from Cote Farm Partnership and OTM Heifers to 174.5ppk from JH Towers & Son, Tunstall. Friesian cows averaged 123.2ppk with an overall average of 136.14ppk.

STORE CATTLE Trade for all classes of store ca1le was sharper this week, topping at £1400. Firstly, from M Shepherd & Sons with a pair of 25 month old Blue Bullocks and secondly from Barlow Bros with a Simmental Bullock at 24 months old. Blue heifers sold to a top of £1240 for a pen of four at 24 months from JS & KM Wilson, Helsington. Na6ve bred stores to £1290 for a pair of Hereford Bullocks from J & F Nu1er and £1260 for Angus Bullocks from H Hesketh. A big Friesian from J Lamb, Old Glasson sold to £1290. A run of nice yearling ca1le from J & E Nu1all sold to £840 for 11month Hereford Bullocks and £830 for 12month Angus Bullocks.

CALVES A big entry of 83 calves and s6rks this morning at Lancaster. Trade for all classes was fast, with black and whites especially above and beyond vendor’s expecta6ons, topping at £230 for an 8 week old from WN & D Smith & Son, Cockerham. Best Friesian calves regularly £140-£190 with younger rearing calves dearer than expected £65-£85 and plainer sorts £32-£50. Overall average of £128/head. Best con6nental calves in short supply, with blue heifers to £365 from TD & V Whitaker, Winmarleigh. And month old blues from J Hoggarth & Son, Slyne to £295. Na6ve bred calves saw Angus Bulls from Wallbank Farms Ltd, to £425 at only 6weeks, and Herefords to £350 for 10week old bulls. A good run of s6rks sold to £645 on four occasions for Blue heifers from A Shepherd, Pilling and Blue bulls from I Atkinson & Son, Warton and WD & RD Walmsley & Son, Cockerham. Monday 22nd June PRIME LAMBS In line with the trade from the middle to end of last week, Lancaster averaged 176ppk, quite a drop from last week’s very buoyant trade. Plenty of buyers around the ringside all bidding keenly on lambs. Light weight lambs between 32kg and 35kg were best to sell regularly around 200ppk plus and topping at 212ppk for a smart pen of Beltex lambs from David Pricke1 of Farleton. The Majority of pens of 40kg plus lambs selling above £70 with be1er types achieving £75 and beyond depending very much on the lambs.

PRIME HOGGS A larger selec6on of hoggs forward this week, s6ll in demand from buyers looking to purchase hoggs carrying plenty of meat. Heavy weight hoggs sold to a top of £92 and many pens of well fleshed hoggs sold 150ppk plus.

CAST SHEEP A smaller number of ewes forward today sold to a slightly sharper trade than what ewes finished off at the previous week, a shortage of ewes forward meant many more could have been sold to advantage. Lean ewes were especially good to sell as buyers were very cau6ous of buying ewes carrying excess amounts of fat. Big con6nental ewes sold to £99. Mule ewes generally selling in the seven6es topping at £79.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 18th June CALVES The weekly sale of Calves con6nues to have a strong trade with vendors once again pleased with their trade. As seen throughout the North West, beef calves are eagerly sought a@er with one month old good Bri6sh Blue bulls selling to £465 and £410 from A & E Barnes of Brackenfold and Simmental Bulls from R & EA Gardner of Barrowfield selling to £440. Heifers achieved a top of £380 for a one month old Bri6sh Blue from David Galbraith of Sunny Bank. A consignment of Limousin calves from the Cornthwaite Family of Langley Park of Millom a1racted plenty of a1en6on selling to £345 for both heifers and bulls. Strong black and white bull calves now demanding a premium as 6 week old calves sold to £215 from TK Robinson & Sons of Greaves Farm with other stronger types easily selling at £150 and younger rearing types selling for between £50 and £80. All Black and White calves averaged £133.

Once again more calves could have easily been sold with plenty of buyers at the ringside and a few new buyers present as well. Vendors and poten6al new vendors are strongly advised to forward calves to J36 to gain the full poten6al for their calves. Tuesday 23rd June North West Auctions saw 1,232 Prime sheep forward at its weekly sale.

PRIME LAMBS A top price of £77 was achieved for Beltex x lambs from AE Atkinson & Son of Endmoor and others at £76.50 for heavy Texel x from ML & SM Dobson, Crosthwaite. An overall average of 164p/kg was achieved in-line with other local centres and ahead of the na6onal average. Light weight lambs (34kg-37kg) easily 175p/kg-195p/kg topping at 196p/kg for Texel x from GW Robinson & Son of Crooklands. Mediums up to 42kgs 160p/kg-172p/kg with heavy lambs 43kg+ £70-£75 depending on type.

Con6nental ewes regularly £90-£100. Mule ewes £70-£80. A much smaller show of Horned sheep this week topped at £80 for Rough Fells and Swaledales sold to £49.

How sheep poo can save you money This year lamb prices are nothing to write home about, so we need to look at maximising production with lower input costs. One way to help is to reduce the number of times you are worming your lambs. Another benefit of worming lambs less often is that you will slow wormer resistance in the worm population on your farm. Remember with worm resistance the sheep have nothing to do with it, it is the worm population that gets resistant to the drugs, not the sheep.

So when do you need to worm lambs? When they are scouring? 3 weeks after the last time you wormed them? When they are not growing? Don’t second guess! A more accurate way to find out is by taking a dung sample from lambs and looking for worm eggs. Faecal egg counting (FEC) tells us if the lambs have worms in their guts and roughly how many worms there are. The end of June/start of July is the time to start sampling lambs to check the levels of worms in them. To make this process easier for you, Farm Gate Vets have sample bags in the lairage of both Lancaster and J36 auctions, so that you can get some dung samples from your trailer before you wash it out. Label these samples with your name and address; there is a box in the auction office to put them in. We will test the sample and get back to you with the results, simples! £10 + VAT per FEC sample tested.

Another time to check worm levels in lambs is 2 weeks after you worm them to make sure the drug has done the job. If the worm levels are 20% of what they were pre worming, then you need to look at using another wormer, as an effective wormer should kill 95% of the worms.
