NWA & Melton Mowbray Sale of Pedigree Limousin Rams & Females

Exceptional demand at Midlands Spring Limousin Sale 93% clearance in pedigrees 100% clearance in stores 6000gns top call thrice Saturday’s inaugural Official Limousin Society Spring Limousin Sale at Melton Mowbray, the first sale run as a joint venture between North West Auctions and Melton Mowbray Market, saw an exceptional demand for all classes of stock, resulting in a 93% clearance in the pedigree stock offered and a 100% clearance of store cattle too.

Topping at 6000gns thrice, the sale was hailed a resounding success by both NWA and Melton Mowbray Market, with Paul Gentry of NWA saying it was a reflection of the quality of stock vendors put forward. “This was a great first joint venture sale with Melton Mowbray and both myself and Hugh Brown of Melton Mowbray would like to thank the Society and vendors for their support of this sale and consigning such a high standard of cattle.”

Taking the day’s first sale topping bid of 6000gns was a well travelled bull from the Quick family’s Loosebeare herd, Devon. This was Loosebeare Nibbler, a son of Ampertaine Jeronimo and out of the Aghadolgan Emperor daughter, Loosebeare Jilly. Going back to both Sympa and Wilodge Vantastic, this bull was the pick of Napper Farms, West Hagbourn, Oxfordshire.

Following at the same money was Brockhurst Nosferatu from the Mash family, Buckinghamshire. This ET bred bull is a son of the noted Wilodge Vantastic and is out of Brockhurst Bolshoi, a Grahams Samson daughter from the top breeding female Ronick Mcainsi. He is a full brother to the 24,000gns Brockhurst Howzat and sold to the Will Ketley, Toppesfield, Essex.

A pair of bulls then sold at 5500gns, with the first of these being another from the Mash family, Brockhurst Neuf, a son of Ardglasson Highlander and out of Brockhurst Hotsuff, a dam going back to the French cow Segala. He was knocked down to Lowesby Estate, Lowesby, Leicestershire.

Second at 5500gns was Hillingreave Noble from S Littlewood. Again carrying top level breeding he is by the 23,000gns Goldies Fandango and out of Tweeddale Demi, a Sympa daughter. This one found a new home with J Bottesch, Holwell, Hertfordshire.

And a trio of bulls followed them at 4500gns. First at this level was Ewdenvale Noel from S Wilde. Sired by the homebred Ewdenvale Lovejoy, he is out of a dam which goes back to Wilodge Tonka and was bought by D I Draycott and Sons, Peckleton Leicester.

Next at 4500gns was McInnes Nightrider from S Gillerd. Bred by Ashley McInnes and sired by Loosebeare Iain, he is out of a Netherhall Chancer daughter and sold to W Howe, Barwell, Leicestershire.

And the final bull at 4500gns was Hollingreave Owen from S Littlewood. This Boldventure Ian son is out of a dam by Goldies Fandango and was taken by J B Wallwin, Langar, Nottinghamshire.

Taking the day’s third 6000gns call was the best selling female of the day Frogmore Nevada from Chris White, Gloucestershire.

Sired by the 140,000gns Trueman Jagger she is out of Miscombe Gamble, an Oxygene daughter. She was well fought for, with the final bid coming from W Tomlinson, Treswell, Nottinghamshire.

A cow and calf outfit then grossed 5000gns when Messrs Lee and Lloyd sold Ampertaine Irishgirl and her heifer calf Calogale Ola, a Sarkley Moray daughter. Irishgirl herself is by Ampertaine Elgin and out of the Wilodge Cerberus daughter Ampertaine Gem. This pair sold to L J Stamper, Bromswold, Cambridgeshire.

Next best in the females was a 4200gns for Brockhurst Magnum from the Mash family. This daughter of Brockhurst Indemand is out of Brockhurst Idolise, a Netherhall Chancer daughter. She was sold in-calf for Newroddige Jetset and went home with J Lear, Aylesbury.

North West Auctions Another from the same home then sold at 4000gns, with this being Brockhurst Maple, a Talent daughter out of Millington Fancied, a Mas Du Clo daughter. She was offered in-calf to Brockhurst Limelight and was knocked down to Mel Lucas, Antrim, Northern Ireland.

Then at 3200gns was Brockhurst Madam. This is another Talent daughter and is out of the Netherhall Chancer daughter Fenrose Gertrude. In-calf to Newroddige Jetset, she was the pick of P A Knight, Kettering, Northamptonshire.

Close behind at 3000gns was Brockhurst Monalisa, another by Brockhurst Indemand and this time out of Brockhurst Icecream, a Brockhurst Centurion daughter. She was again sold carrying to Newroddige Jetset and was bought by the G N Pamplin, Ringstead, Northamptonshire.

At the same money was Brockhurst Melodie, a Brockhurst Inky daughter out of a dam by Hafodlas Domino. Another offered in-calf to Jetset, she found a new home with previous buyer J Lear.

Top call in the commercial cattle went to a senior bull from the Quick family, with this being the Aghadolgan Emperor son Loosebeare Mars.

This three year old bull out of a Haltcliffe Anzac daughter sold at £3675 to Napper Farms, West Hagbourn, Oxfordshire.

Store Cattle Will Ketley then sold a strong run of stores, topping at £1620 for a British Blue cross Limousin heifer which sold to P A and G M Haworth, Radlett, Hertfordshire.

The same vendor:buyer combination as responsible for two sales at £1600 for similarly bred heifers, while R Morris, Oswestry, also paid £1600 for a Blue cross from Will Ketley, with this bid also matched by H and B A Witcomb when they bought a Limousin cross heifer from the same home.

The Geary family, Buckinghamshire, then took £1550 for a Limousin seven month cross steer, with this sale seeing Will Ketley invest some of hs earlier takings.

Selling at £1520 was another Limousin cross heifer from Will Ketley, with this one selling to C Collins, Upton Snodsbury, Worcester and at £1500 was another from the Gearys. This was Limousin cross steer which sold to B J Isaacson, Ventnor, Isle of Wight. The same vendors then sold a Limousin cross heifer at £1400 to Will Ketley.

Averages; 13 Limousin bulls £4635.15, 63 Limousin maiden heifers £1521.33, 28 Limousin in-calf heifers £2184.38, 24 Limousin cows £2261.88, one commercial bull £3675, 25 store steers £1020, 44 store heifers £1129.09.

Monthly Dairy Sale - Tuesday 16th April Another great line up of quality animals for NWA and Hassall Brothers monthly sale of dairy cattle at Lancaster, the sale delivers quality cattle month on month and certainly there is something for every purchaser, for either the commercial milk producer of the pedigree breeder you will be sure to find it at this sale.

A few less buyers around the ringside today due to field commitments with an upturn in the weather, which can always be the case for the April month however the buyers that were in attendance were there to do business. The show was kindly judged by Sam Bargh and he had a great line up of animals to judge for his Champion he selected Berryholme Abbott Flo a heifer that was first prize in the non halter led heifer class and then went on to be Champion animal she sold for £2,600 to Crossfell House Farm Ltd, of Kirby Thore who secured several other great lots.

H & SD Cornthwaite secured the Reserve Champion rosette with Kirkwood Defender Duchess, this first place cow yielding 39.kg was secured by R E & P Miller of Lingart of Preston for £1,480. MJ & H Atkinson had a lovely line up of heifers selling to £2,100 for Wyredale Dreamer Sylvia this heifer was the third prize heifer in the non halter led heifer class, yielding 32.kd daily she was purchased by Bradleys Farms LTD, of Preeshall. Mark Atkinson also consigned the second placed heifer, selling to Crossdfell House Farm Ltd for £2,000. Messrs NW & JM Coulthurst & Son of Preston purchased Witherslack Cayle Rose from the Inman Family for £2,000. Messrs EH & R Eccles consigned a heifer which was a third prize in the haltler led and this really milky heifer yielding 35kg daily was snapped up by Bradleys Farms for £1,980.

R & A Jolleys consigned two lovely heifers selling to £1,900 to a local purchaser. Other great heifers cruised readily over £1,800 today with plenty of others for other budgets and tastes.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 19th April With spring filling the air at the moment and the grass growing well there was a buzz round the Store Cattle ring at Lancaster leading to a sharper trade. Topping the market this week was a Fleckvieh bullock selling to £1320 from CG Birkett, Carnforth. The consignment from DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland saw Limousins to £1280, Charolais to £1270 and British Blues to £1250 with other British Blues selling to £1240 from CG Birkett. Native cattle saw Herefords top at £1230 from L Parsons & Sons, Levens. Heifers sold to a top of £1180 for British Blues from WS Burrow & Sons, Silverdale. Angus heifers sold to £1120 from JC Kippax, Garstang. Black and white bullocks sold to a top of £1060 from L Parsons & Sons. Plenty of men were ringside today looking for grazing type cattle with more cattle of all ages needed at Lancaster.

The weekly sale of Cast Cows and OTM Cattle at Lancaster had a reduce entry this week in which more were needed to fulfil the buyers requirements selling to an overall market of 124p/kg. Leading the way today was young Limousin cows from TA Chapman & Son, Kendal selling to 164.5p/kg. OTM Heifers saw Angus’ sell to a top of 159.5p/kg from GR & A Foy, Conder Green. OTM Black and White heifers twice sold to 154.5p/kg firstly from Lawsons Farm, Cockerham and J & M Robinson, Over Kellet. Best Black and White cows sold in excess of 130p/kg, topping at 134.5p/kg from H Halhead & Son, Nether Kellet. Top price per head was £1228 for an Angus cow from G Metcalfe & Son, Gressingham.

A slightly smaller entry of Calves this week saw a busy ringside of buyers for the Good Friday sale leading to a strong trade for the calves forward which was well worthy for vendors who ventured out with their stock. British Blue bulls twice topped at £355 from H & C Pickervance, Kirkham. Other British Blue bull calves sold to £305 from GCL Stephenson, Kirkby Lonsdale. Limousin bull calves topped at £300 from JM & MH France & Son, Little Dale and £295 from GCL Stephenson. Limousin heifers sold to £300 from TA Chapman & Son, Kendal with other to £295 from GCL Stephenson. Native Bull calves topped at £280 for Angus’ from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale with Herefords selling to £270 from the same home. All beef bull calves forward averaged £287 with all beef heifers averaging £248.13.

Black and white bull calves topped at £142 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale, £135 from CG Birkett, Carnforth and £115 from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale. All Friesian bull calves forward averaged £94.82.

Monday 22nd April A smaller entry of Spring Lambs forward this bank holiday sold to an overall market average of 232p/kg. A shortage of best quality lambs this week saw the best quality in highest demand. Beltexs sold to 270p/kg from Bargh Contractors, Heath with Oxcliffe. Texels sold to a top of £99 from PW & DW Roskell, Pilling.

There was an entry of over 400 Prime Hoggs forward this week selling to an overall average of 187p/kg with an SQQ 197p/kg. Top pence per kilo this week was 233p/kg from AG Butler, Hambleton for Beltex hoggs with others to 230p/kg from the same good home. Texels sold to 224p/kg and 218p/kg from Barker Farms, Cockerham. Top price per head today was £106 for Texels from T & E Burrow, Sylne with others Texels selling to £103 AG Butler who also sold Beltex hoggs to £100 and £99. Texels also sold to £100 from V & EJ Chadwick & Sons, Sowerby with Charollais selling to £99 from RS & IM KEllet, Cockerham and Suffolks to £98 from JA Lambert, Out Rawcliffe. Once again, over 100 Cast Sheep forward at Lancaster selling to another strong trade. Topping the market today was a Hampshire cast tup from Mrs L Dawson, Dolphinholme, with Texel tups selling to £100 from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth. Ewes topped at £96 for Continentals from WG & RG Riley, Chorley with Texel ewes to £94 from S Wilson & Son. Plenty of Continental ewes easily sold in the eighties today. Hill bred ewes saw Cheviots sell to £80, Scotch Blackfaces to £78 with strong pens of Mules and Mashams in the early seventies.

Lancaster Sale Reports There was a strong trade for Sheep with Lambs this week with plenty of people ringside looking to purchase. Leading the way this week was Suffolk ewes with Twin Lambs at Foot selling to £195 from Messrs Hey & Sons, Quernmore. Broken mouthed Mule ewes with Twin lambs at Foot sold to £180 from D & K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Other pens of Mule ewes with twin lambs at foot sold to £175 from Messrs Hey & Sons, £172 from W Pinder Jnr, Newton in Bowland and £170 from LE & A Ridding, Selside. Sheep with singles sold to a top of £128 from W Pinder Jnr with Masham Ewes and Texel lambs. There was an overall market average of £55.15 per life.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 18th April There was another good day in the Calf ring today at J36 with all vendors leaving happy. Trade topped at £405 for a Limousin bull calf from CM & CS Chapplehow, Clifton Dykes with others from the same good home to £400. British Blue bulls met another strong trade with a peak of £380 from HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick. A mixed show of native bred bull calves in this morning topped at £300 for an Aberdeen Angus from R Morris Eyton & Son, Millom. A young show of Limousin bull calves forward today peaked at £275 from B & MJ Nelson & Son, Heversham. A smart run of Limousin heifers from CM & CS Chappelhow, Clifton Dykes peaked at £390 with others at £360. A mixed young show of British Blue heifers forward today topped at £290. Plenty of beef calves sold in the mid two hundreds. A very mixed show of Black and White bull claves sold to full value, topping at £50 from R Morris Eyton & Son with others at £42.

Cull Cows were a sharper trade for all types with more needed to meet buyer’s demands. All forward sold to an average 119p/kg with a large number of dairy cows forward. The top price of 149p/kg was achieved for a young Holstein Friesian cow from JM Barton & Son with beef cows to 139p/kg for a pure Hereford from GM Redmayne. Meated beef cows were generally 120-135p/kg and dairy cows 110p/kg – 125p/kg depending on weight and finish. Top grossing cow was a South Devon bull at £1104 from GD Tyson.

The fortnightly sale of Store Cattle saw an active ringside of buyers keen to secure all classes and types of cattle ahead of turn out.

Steers sold to £810 for Simmental x steers from SW Atkinson & Son and Limousin x from DJ Clarke. Other suckler bred steers were £750 £800 depending on size and quality. The annual draft of British Friesian steers from R & A Galbraith, sold in outlying condition, topped at £770 with others £760, all 35 averaged £725. Younger steers were £620 -- £700.

Heifers sold to £810 for Limousin x from R & A Galbraith with younger suckler bred heifers generally £700 - £800 peaking at £810 for Limousin x from J & J Postlethwaite. Young bulls sold to £770 for Limousin x from SW Atkinson and Holstein Friesians £480 from JH Barker & Son.

Tuesday 23rd April The special sale of Prime Pigs saw a strong entry of 44 forward with all pigs selling to a strong and competitive trade. Buyers were present for all classes and types but showing preference towards well finished pigs and cautious of lightweight, under finished pigs and boars. The sale topped at £112 (118p/kg) for white gilts from NJ Wilkinson, Barrow in Furness with other white gilts achieving £100 (114p/kg) from W Stamper, Chipping. Well finished cutter pigs generally 90p/kg – 100p/kg with porkers 80p/kg – 96p/kg. All prime pigs averaged 88p/kg (£82).

There was an entry of 150 Sheep with Lambs at foot which saw young quality outfits in strong demand at J36. Leading the way today was Mule shearlings with twin lambs selling to £218 from WI & A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale with G & KM Atkinson, Colby selling to £218 and £212. This was closely followed by JA Chapman, Kendal selling to £210. All Mule shearlings with twin lambs at foot averaged £213.10. Texel shearlings topped at £215 from JA Chapman, Kendal with others to £210 from the same home. Texel Shearlings with twin lambs averaged £205.45. Suffolk shearlings with Suffolk twin lambs sold to £210 with Suffolk shearlings with singles from TH Gibson & Son, Kendal selling to £170. Mule ewes with twin lambs sold to a top of £175 from WI & A Atkinson & Son, with Continental Sheep with twins selling to £172 from R Colbear, Appleby. The first Herdwicks of the year were on the market today selling with Texel twin lambs selling to £90 from DR Harrison, Selside.

North West Auctions A smaller entry of Spring Lambs forward this week sold to another strong trade at J36 with an overall market average of 247p/kg. Leading the way at 273p/kg was FE & CM Robinson, Milnthorpe with a Texel Lamb whose consignment sold to £108, £106 and £104. The consignment of Hampshires from J & O Galbraith, Endmoor sold to £104 or 251p/kg.

A few more Prime Hoggs on the market this week which sold to a sharper trade. There was an overall market average of 200p/kg with an SQQ of 207p/kg. Topping the market today at £107 was Charollais hoggs from JG Harryman, Hawkshead. Texels sold to £104 from AR & C Fawcett, Seascale with others to £102 from GR Wilson, Natland and MW & MR Black, Staveley. Suffolks topped at £100 from DM & D Cook, Ulverston. Beltex hoggs topped at £100 from GM & A Jackson, Little Eccleston with Scotch Blackface Hoggs from the same home selling to £99. Beltex hoggs sold to a top of 250p/kg from GM & A Jackson with other Beltex selling to 246p/kg, 240p/kg and 237p/kg from JG Harryman. There was plenty of Continental and Cheviot hoggs selling around the 220p/kg. Handy weight hoggs were in the strongest demand today.

Numerous more pens of Continental and Suffolk ewes sold in excess of the £100 mark. Cheviot Mule ewes topped at £95 from PK & R Woof with others selling to £94 from KR & CA Williamson, Barbon. Mule ewes topped at £92 from TW Gorst with others selling to £89 from DJ Casson & Son, Slyne. Numerous other pens of Mule ewes easily sold into the eighties. Horned ewes sold to a top of £78 for Rough Fells from JH Atkinson & Partners, Selside with other horned sheep selling to £77 from GJ Ibbotson, Lancaster. Swaledale ewes topped at £74 from R & EA Gardner, Brigsteer. All cast ewes forward this week averaged £69.75 including a larger proportion of hill bred ewes this week.

J36 continues to enjoy a strong trade for tups with Beltex x tup twice topping at £125 from JS & KM Wilson & Son, Natland and from KR & CA Williamson.
