Farmers Guardian hosted the Marts the Heart awards last week in the Birmingham and we are delighted that we won the 10th anniversary award for More than a Mart award. This award is given to a company that’s more than just a livestock Market. Its awarded to Marts that show a significant di erence that benefits the economic, social and wellbeing of the whole community it serves. Over the years we are proud of what we have achieved and plan to keep this e ort up and will continue to do whatever we can to secure the future of both our livestock Markets and the businesses around us. Plus, o ering the facilitation for so many other businesses, groups, and wide range charities to use and benefit from our great locations and facilities we to o er.

BRED BREEDING SHEEP
The annual Lakeland Fair sale once again attracted a large ringside of buyers for all breeds and classes of sheep. In ring one the sale commenced with horned and hill bred ewes, shearlings and lambs. Swaledale ewes topped at £195 for three crop ewes from Forest Hall Farm who sold other pens at £178. Swaledale ewes all in averaged a very respectable £133.67. Other breeds saw Gritstones shearlings to £188 from Messrs Edmondson, Langdale with Herdwicks ewes to £175 from L Hodgson, Witherslack. Rough Fells sold to £124 for three crops from JH&D Capstick, Lockholme with others at £120 from J Potter, Orton. A nice trade was seen for horned and hill bred gimmer lambs,
selling to £130 for Swaledales from P&TL Edmondson, Low Hall with Swaledale also selling to £122 from AJ&L Birkett, Langgdale and £120 for Forest Hall Farm. Cheviot gimmer lambs sold to £120 from P Richardson, Newbiggin on Lune who sold others to £118. J Potter, Orton sold Gritstone to £86 and Rough Fells to £70 with Herdwicks topping at £70 from M&G German, S&N Hadwin and M Miller.

Still appetite for gimmer lambs with North Country Mules selling to £152, £150 & £140 from Drinkall Bros and running types to £135 from JF Cook and other £122 I Clarke. Texel gimmer lambs from B&M Slater sold at £150. A consignment of Dutch Spotted Gimmer Lambs sold to £225 from KP Dagger.

The show and sale of Swaledale rams witnessed a nice turnout, of some quality tups from noted breeders. Judging was kindly undertaken by Mr J Capstick, Fellside, who gave champion to an aged ram owned by Thomas and Helen Drinkall, Calderside Farm
and bred by John White, Rigg Farm. Reserve champion went to David Harker, Overthwaite for a shearling ram. Topping todays trade with a shearling ram from Richard Tunstall, Foggygill making £650. The overall average for Swaledales was £220.56.

A good show of Cheviot rams today with a good trade to match. Taking both champion and reserve was Keith and Annie Stones, they went on to make £750 and £700 respectively. The champion went to the judge Mr J Capstick, Fellside. Topping trade today was Spring Bank Farm with a shearling ram at £900. The overall average for Cheviots was £376.34.

PRIME LAMBS
Pleasing to see numbers continuing to rise on a Monday morning but disappointingly far too many under finished‘store’lambs forward proving di icult to sell to‘fat’lamb buyers.
Vendors are strongly encouraged to draw lambs on finish, not just purely on weight. Of the well finished lambs forward these sold to 383p/kg and £162 for Beltex cross, with others at 369p/kg from TR Prickett and £156 from H Mason. Several heavy weights forward selling at £170 for Texel cross from CJ Metcalfe. Well finished lambs were generally 305p/kg to 320p/kg, with the excessive number of under finished lambs forward ranging from 230p/kg to 290p/kg, depending on breed and quality. The best of the lightweight lambs sold to 321p/kg from JRP Hughes. A market average today of 295p/kg was achieved.

Prime Lambs in demand: Sharper trade rings true at Junction 36
Trade saw a notable lift at todays prime lamb sale at Junction 36 Auction Market. Trade sharper on the week especially for the handy weights resulting in a sqq of 307ppk and an overall of 300ppk. Buoyant bidding throughout reflected a strong demand and a tightening in numbers forward today.

Texels topped at £184 from Messrs TMW & H Hodgson. Dorsets sold to £180 from S Proctor and Su olks reached £176 for a pair from W Garnett & Son. A pen of 4 39kg lambs from Messrs D & DW Prickett sold to 341ppk, the same good farming sold a further pen of 4 for 335.1ppk these were 37kg lambs. A pair of 44kg lambs from Messrs DJ Dickinson sold for 338.6ppkg or £149. 4 Texels from CI Briggs hit 337.5ppk for lambs at the 40kg mark. 29 Texels in one lot sold for £153 weighing 46kg from M & S Blease.

The largest entry of the season, selling to an ever-expanding ringside of local and travelled buyers, with new faces ringside and keen to return.
As per previous sales well drawn level bunches of lambs attracted the keenest buyer interest who all had trailers, lorry’s and fields to fill.
Well bred lambs continue to sell to a premium topping at £148 for Beltex cross from JA&KJ Allen, with others £130 to £145. Strongest first cross lambs sold to £135 for Texel cross from HE&MJ Henderson, others were generally £120 to £130 and mediums £108 to £115. Longer keep lambs were £92 to £104.
Pure hill lambs saw Cheviots sell to £115, Rough Fells £106, Herdwicks £104, Swaledale £79 and SBF £65. All sold today averaged £105.62.

Lancasters weekly sale of store cattle once again proved that you don’t have to go anywhere else to sell your Aberdeen Angus cattle, with these topping the steer trade at £2680 from M&RW Stirzaker, Milnthorpe.
J&M Maudsley & Sons, Endmoor saw their super run of Angus cattle top at £2550, with pen after pen of Angus cattle above the £2350 barrier. Charolais steers topped at £2480 from M Shepherd & Sons, Pilling. Other Charolais steers achieved £2380 from JM Haddow, Milnthorpe. A terrific run of British Blue bred cattle from K&DE Woodhouse, Ellel topped out at £2650, with others at £2620 from WT Eastham & Sons, Goosnargh. Simmental steers sold to £2350 from JM Haddow, Milnthorpe. A&E Clarkson, Thurnham sold a pair of Hereford steers to £2250. Dairy bred stees from BL&D Banks, Pilling sold to £2300 for a Montbeliarde, Fleckvieh sold to £2120 for a pen of four from H Birkett & Son, Overton while Friesian steers achieved £1950 from R&K Jenkinson, Pilling with others at £1900 from A&MI Robinson, Orton. All steers today averaged £2201, which included consignments of younger cattle. No let up in the store heifer trade, which was definitely sharper on the week with all heifers today averaging £1950, with again several vendors selling younger grazing types with plenty of buyers round the ring for these types. M Shepherd & Sons, Pilling topped the store heifer trade with an outstanding Charolais heifer to £2420. K&DE Woodhouse, Ellel continued their good days trading with a trio of British Blue heifers to £2380. Others achieved £2300 from M Shepherd & Sons, Pilling. J&M Maudsley & Sons, Endmoor sold Aberdeen Angus cattle to £2250 x4, £2220 x4 and £2200 x4. Limousin heifers sold to £2100 from A&MI Robinson, Orton while GA&A Atkinson, Cantsfield sold a trio of Limousins at £2080. OTM CATTLE
Another fantastic Friday in the OTM ring at Lancaster, with just short of one hundred through the bottom ring. A show of very mixed cattle, from the very best underage clean cattle to some very lean OTMs, included in the average of 245p/kg.
OTM cattle sold to 349.5p/kg or £2558 for a Limousin cow from GA&A Atkinson, Cantsfield. Simmental bred OTM cows from Barlow Bros, Preston achieved £2361 or 295p/kg. British Blues sold to £2324 from GR&A Foy, Conder Green. Others achieved 309p/kg from T&S Blades, Carnforth who also sold Limousin cows at £2110. Other beef bred OTMs saw Herefords to £2071 from A&CM Carter, Witherslack and an Angus at £2012 from GR&A Foy, Conder Green. Dairy bred OTMs saw Friesians top at £1933 from SW&K Metcalfe, Whittington with other Friesians at 279p/kg from JP&C Robson, Garstang. Plenty of other Friesian cows were over the 260p/kg barrier.
OTM heifers from A&FM Bolland, Ellel saw Friesian sell to £2316, other Friesian heifer from the same good home achieved £2080 or 324p/kg. Beef bred OTM heifers from T&S Blades, Carnforth sold to 289p/kg for a British Blue. Other dairy bred OTM heifers to 239p/kg for a Friesian from PA&D Slater, Garstang with Norwegian Red OTM heifers to the same price from J Whitaker & Son, Nether Kellet.
Under thirty month cattle can easily be sold in the bottom ring with Wilmar Farms, St Michaels showing Limousin at 389p/kg and Herefords at 359p/kg, while an Ayrshire at 26 months old sold to 334p/kg from D&K Howorth, Hambleton.
Just a couple of cast bulls in today, selling to 244p/kg from R&EM Cornall, Arkholme for
a Hereford.
More numbers required next week to satisfy buyer demand.
