May Fair Day - In Augural Breeding Bull Sale at J36 Thursday 17th May New Market Record Achieved at Inaugural `May Fair Day’ Beef Breeding Sale North West Auctions held its inaugural `May Fair Day’ sale of beef breeding cattle which attracted buyers from throughout the Northern Counties keen to secure replacement stock. A feature of the sale was the pedigree and pure bred breeding bulls. A quality catalogued entry offered purchasers a wide variety of bulls with this sale format proving very popular.

The sale topped at £4000 which also set a new market record price achieved for a breeding bull at J36. This was for a pedigree Limousin bull ‘Wanthwaite Mighty’ from TW Bell, Keswick. The next top price was for another Limousin bull ‘Wanthwaite Morgan’, again from TW Bell, selling for £3000 which was closely followed by MA & JA Winn, Burneside who sold a home bred Limousin bull at £2800. JE Bellas & Son, Appleby travelled down with a pedigree British Blue bull ‘Croftends Lennox’ which sold for £2500. A pedigree Blonde from WR Nelson, Carnforth found a new home at £2400 and they also sold a Simmental at £1700.

Several native bred bulls sold to keen interest to £1900 for a pedigree Angus from RG Robinson, Farleton; also achieving this price was TLB & J Knowles, Selside for a pure Hereford bull.

Mature bulls sold to £1750 for a 5 year old Blonde from JA & G Gardner, Kirkham and a 5 year old Beef Shorthorn from J & MT Miller sold at £1100.

The sale of cows and calves attracted strong buyer interest with all keen to secure replacement stock and many leaving empty handed.

The annual draft of Limousin x cows with Limousin calves at foot from KM & KJ Curwen of Abbeystead, sold to a top price of £1750 for a second calver, with others selling to £1600 and £1500. Older cows sold to £1320 for a Charolais x with an Angus calf from BJC Ltd Sedbergh. Others were achieving £980 - £1200.

There was only a handful of heifers forward today, selling to £1680 for a Limousin x followed by a British Blue x at £1600 and £1500, all with Limousin calves at foot.

An entry of bulling heifers from I & AJ Armer, Burneside sold to £1050 for British Blue x with others at £1030 and £1020.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 18th May It was great to have a larger entry of Store Cattle forward today, with in excess of 300 forward. There was a mixed entry of cattle forward, but seeing a strong trade throughout with all sizes and ages very well bid for. The trade peaked today for a pen of three Angus steers from O Butler of Kirkham selling to £1580. This was closely followed by Limousin bullocks from H Chapman and Son of Middleton selling to £1460 and £1440. It was O Butler of Kirkham selling Angus heifers to £1,390.

Cattle numbers are required each week with grazing types of cattle remaining a very strong trade and vendors urged to take advantage.

There was a smaller entry of Cast Cows forward for the sale today with many busy with silage. Many more cattle are needed each week to fulfil buyer’s requirements with many going away short. There was an overall market average of 139p/kg achieved. OTM heifers sold to a top of 204.5p/kg for an Angus heifer from P & A Bell of Pilling with Limousin heifers to 199.5p/kg from KM and KJ Curwen of Abbeystead. Beef cows sold to a top of 177.5p/kg for Simmentals from Barlow Bros of Croston with others from the same good home to £1544. Limousin cows sold to 171.5p/kg from Lucas Breeding of Addlington. Best black and white cows sold to 169.5p/kg from SJ Gardner of Dent. 35% of the cows forward today sold in excess of £1000.

There was 60 Calves and Stirks on offer this week selling to another strong trade with all types of calves eagerly bid for. Beef bull calves sold to a top of £455 from J & G Thornley of Kirkham for British Blue bulls, with others from the same good home selling to £400 and £395.

Limousin bull calves sold to £380 and £375 from DJ Townley of Ashton. 13 day old British Blue bulls sold to £370 from J Bargh and Son of Morecambe. There was a sharper Black and White trade today with, once again, Lancaster out doing local collection centres for all ages and sizes of calves. Trade topped at £155 from R & V Walmsley of Cockerham, closely followed by £150. Young rearing claves easily sold between £50 and £70.

Monday 23rd May There was another entry of over 200 Spring Lambs forward, selling to another buoyant trade at Lancaster. There was an overall market average of 278p/kg achieved. Topping the trade today was Texel lambs from WN & D Smith of Cockerham selling to £136, weighing 44kg.

This was closely followed by 45kg Suffolks from G & D Ball and Son of Great Eccleston selling to £134. Plenty of pens of good conformation lambs were still easily selling in excess of 300p/kg, topping at 320p/kg for Texels from A & E Clarkson of Thurnham.

Winner of this week’s £5 for the highest priced pen of 4 or less spring lambs went to WN & D Smith of Cockerham with Texel lambs to £136.

The winner of the £10 for the highest priced pen of 5 or more lambs went to A & E Clarkson of Thurnham selling a pen of seven 40kg Texel lambs to £128. Another entry of 300 Prime Hoggs this week saw a very mixed entry forward. Well-fleshed finished hoggs were short in supply. Hoggs topped at £135 from GH Sanderson and Family of Catforth for heavy weight Texels. Hill bred hoggs topped at £125 for Cheviots from G Blackledge of Chorley. Hoggs sold to a top 260p/kg from AG Butler of Hambleton.

Hoggs required each week with a busy ring of active buyers looking for all specifications.

A larger entry of Cast Ewes today which were met by plenty of demand and selling well again. Topping the trade this week was a Teeswater tup from E & N Wright and Sons of Roeburndale East. This was closely followed by Cheviot Mule ewes from S Park of Aughton with plenty of ewes selling around the ninety pound mark. Mule ewes sold to a top of £85 from S Wilson and Son of Scotforth. A larger proportion of horned ewes in the market topped at £76 for Rough Fell ewes from SM & CM Bewley of Dent. Swaledale ewes sold to £68 from JC Morphet of Hale.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 17th May - May Fair Day The fortnightly sale of Store Cattle saw an entry of predominantly younger suckler bred sorts forward with buyer’s ringside looking for grazing cattle to take advantage of the recent grass growth. Best steers sold to £1070 for a Limousin x from MW & MR Black, Staveley with others to £980 from GH Jones, Ambleside, others were generally £820 - £950 with smaller sorts at £750 - £800. Several native bred steers sold to £900 for a Hereford x from JL Bird, Flookburgh and £890 for Longhorns from A Bond, Sedbergh. Young Angus x from R Cowin & Sons, Mansergh sold to £550.

Heifers topped at £950 for Limousin x from JG & BJ Escolme, Killington. Nice yearlings generally sold to £750 - £820 selling to £890 for a Limousin x from HR & KA Hodgson, Barbon. An entry of Galloways from MB & JE Meredith, Coniston sold to £710 with others at £670.

The strongest trade for some time was seen for Calves at J36, with more desperately needed each week. The trade topped twice at £375 for heifers, firstly for a Blonde from CR Alderson and Son of Kirkby Stephen and secondly for British Blues from B Mallinson and Son of Levens. Bull calves topped at £360 for Herefords from Barker Farms of Warton. Beef calves saw strong calves regularly selling in excess of the £300 mark. Dairy Shorthorns topped at £110 from J Handley of Whinfell and black and white bulls to £100 from HJ Robinson and Son of Preston Patrick.

A larger entry of stirks created plenty of interest this week, Limousin heifers topped at £600 from R Gibson and Son of Kendal. Angus bullocks sold to £580 from Masons of Birkland Barrow with Angus bulls selling to £560 from RJ & J Gardner of Kendal, with British Blue steers to the same price from JK & A Bowness and Son of Milnthorpe.

There was a similar number of Cast Cattle forward in the market today selling to a sharp trade with all keenly sought after. Topping the trade today at 149.5p/kg was a Limousin cow from J & M Wilson of Selside, closely followed by 141.5p/kg for a Limousin cow from GH Jones of Sawrey. Black and white cows sold to a top of 137.5p/kg from RG & J Clark of Endmoor. There was an overall market average of 123.5p/kg in which more could have easily been sold to the advantage of vendors.

Tuesday 22nd May - Second Show & Sale of Hoggs with Lambs The second show and sale of Hoggs with lambs at foot was deemed a success from vendors and buyers a like. There was over 150 hoggs with lambs at foot in the auction, selling to a buoyant trade throughout. Our thanks must go to our pre-sale judge Mr Craig Procter of Selside, whom we thank for his time. Mr Procter presented his Championship Rosette to the first prized pen of Continental hoggs with Texel lambs to R & E Holmes of Sleagill, these later went onto sell for £205. The Reserve Champion rosette went to the first prized pen of Mule hoggs with Texel lambs from RG Johnson and Son of Harrogate, selling to £195. Strong hoggs with good thriving lambs at foot were often selling around the £190 an outfit mark.

There was another strong trade for all types of ewes and shearlings with lambs, in which more could have been sold and there is certainly still plenty of demand from buyers. Mule ewes with Texel twin lambs at foot sold to £192 from M York of Howgill with Texel shearlings and twin lambs to £190 from EI, EA & TW Wilson of Flookbourgh. There was a good number of Herdwick ewes and lambs on offer today meeting plenty of demand often selling between £35 and £40 a life.

Tuesday 22nd May STRONG TRADE FOR PRIME PIGS AT NWA J36 The fortnightly sale of prime pigs saw the largest entry forward for several sales and a full complement of buyers ensured a fast trade throughout to average an impressive £130 (156p/kg). The sale topped at £162 for a pen of Large White gilts from AP Smith, Lancaster with others achieving £150 for Saddlebacks from HMP Wymott, Preston. Well finished pigs were regularly 150p/kg upwards topping at 208p/kg, again, for Large White gilts from AP Smith. A few prime boars on offer today sold well, topping at £115 (140p/kg).

Today’s sale showed the benefit of pre-entering stock which we encourage vendors to do as soon as possible to assist with advertising and contacting buyers.

The next sale for all classes of pigs is on Tuesday 5th June, entries to date include 10 prime Pietrain x Gilts, 15 white stores/weaners.

There was a good entry of 279 Spring Lambs forward this week. There was a two-tier trade today, as seen nationally, with best conformation lambs selling to a very strong demand, often around 300p/kg, with second tier lambs harder to place.

Topping at 310p/kg was AE Atkinson and Son of Endmoor with Beltex lambs, with others from the same good home selling to 305. Heavy weight Suffolk lambs topped the trade at £139 from JW & D Robinson and Son of Nook. This was closely followed by Texels from S Proctor of Selside at £133.

There was a good entry of 400 Cast Sheep forward, once again, meeting plenty of demand from buyers and selling to a continued strong trade, with a large proportion of the sheep being hill bred ewes. Topping the trade today were Leicester tups from PE & M Capstick of Whicham selling to £111 with Suffolk tups from DM & D Cook of Ulverston selling to £105. Leicester ewes sold to £102 from Forest Hall Farm with Texel ewes to £100 from KR & CA Williamson of Barbon with plenty of ewes in the nineties. Mule ewes sold to £86 from KR & CA Williamson of Barbon with Mule ewes selling around the eighty-pound mark.
