May Fair Day - In Augural Breeding Bull Sale at J36 Thursday 17th May New Market Record Achieved at Inaugural `May Fair Day’ Beef Breeding Sale North West Auctions held its inaugural `May Fair Day’ sale of beef breeding cattle which attracted buyers from throughout the Northern Counties keen to secure replacement stock. A feature of the sale was the pedigree and pure bred breeding bulls. A quality catalogued entry offered purchasers a wide variety of bulls with this sale format proving very popular. The sale topped at £4000 which also set a new market record price achieved for a breeding bull at J36. This was for a pedigree Limousin bull ‘Wanthwaite Mighty’ from TW Bell, Keswick. The next top price was for another Limousin bull ‘Wanthwaite Morgan’, again from TW Bell, selling for £3000 which was closely followed by MA & JA Winn, Burneside who sold a home bred Limousin bull at £2800. JE Bellas & Son, Appleby travelled down with a pedigree British Blue bull ‘Croftends Lennox’ which sold for £2500. A pedigree Blonde from WR Nelson, Carnforth found a new home at £2400 and they also sold a Simmental at £1700. Several native bred bulls sold to keen interest to £1900 for a pedigree Angus from RG Robinson, Farleton; also achieving this price was TLB & J Knowles, Selside for a pure Hereford bull. Mature bulls sold to £1750 for a 5 year old Blonde from JA & G Gardner, Kirkham and a 5 year old Beef Shorthorn from J & MT Miller sold at £1100. The sale of cows and calves attracted strong buyer interest with all keen to secure replacement stock and many leaving empty handed. The annual draft of Limousin x cows with Limousin calves at foot from KM & KJ Curwen of Abbeystead, sold to a top price of £1750 for a second calver, with others selling to £1600 and £1500. Older cows sold to £1320 for a Charolais x with an Angus calf from BJC Ltd Sedbergh. Others were achieving £980 - £1200. There was only a handful of heifers forward today, selling to £1680 for a Limousin x followed by a British Blue x at £1600 and £1500, all with Limousin calves at foot. An entry of bulling heifers from I & AJ Armer, Burneside sold to £1050 for British Blue x with others at £1030 and £1020.
