Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Spring Lambs, Prime Hoggs, Cast Sheep & Sheep with Lambs at Foot, Monday 19th May 2025.
Spring Lambs
Spring lambs saw a sharper trade than the previous week with a pleasing entry of 175 selling to a SQQ average of 360ppk and an overall of 342ppk. Hitting top spot today would be WA & LM Jenkinson, Stalmine with his usual consignment of quality texel lambs topping at 445ppk or £178. Other texel lambs from D&E Whitaker, Quernmore to £166. Heavy weighted springers would be no more money than a good 43-44kg springer. KA Purtills 46kg texel lambs to £160. More men around the ring today going onto springers.

Prime Hoggs

Prime Hoggs saw a reduced number about with many vendors on the last round up of hoggs today which was reflected in the sqq average of 290.94 and overall at 281ppk with hoggs ranging from 27kg to 71kg. Top of the tree today would be T Clark, Inskip with his heavy weight texel hoggs to £179 and £172 with other heavy weight texels to £167 for F&SG Sanderson, Preston. Handy weighted in spec hoggs today would again see the best trade with KA Purtills weekly consignment of continental hoggs to 344pkg. Masie Beresford, Kirby-In-Furness selling to 336pkg or £151. Barker Farms, Cockerham saw his run of cheviot hoggs to 302 ppk.

A few more cast sheep about today with 100 going through the ring with trade as bit as good as previous weeks. Texel ewes to £198 from Charlie Metcalfe, Ingleton with other texel ewes at £191 from D & E Whitaker, Quernmore. Suffolk ewes to £195 from S Wilson & Son, Lancaster who also had Charolais ewes to £193. Best Mule ewes would sell to a top of £183 from J & K Burr, Quernmore with others to £179 from D & E Whitaker, Quernmore. Next grade down mules to £148 from CJ Metcalfe, Ingleton. Sheep with Lambs at Foot
Just a handful of ewes and lambs forward today from RE Briggs, Wennington with 2 crop Cheviot Mules with twin texel lambs to £295, and his single 2 crop Cheviot Mules to £225. Vendors urged to pre enter ewes and lambs at Lancaster so buyers can be informed of numbers coming in.

PRIME LAMBS & HOGGS
Prime lambs sell well, however more resistance faced in general on the week for sheep. 224 spring lambs forward saw a slight decrease from last weeks fantastic trade.
Hoggs also sold in line with the general trade of late, with especially heavy weight or longer keep sheep a lot harder to sell. Handy weight sheep in both sections very much the desired item.
Texel lambs topped at £169 for a pair from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Other Texels sold to £166 or 386p/kg for 43kg lambs. The same home then had a 42kg lamb at the same pence per kilo, totalling £162. Lighter spring lambs at 36kg sold to 358.3p/kg from EM Standing, Witherslack.
Hoggs topped at 347.1p/kg for a pair of Texels from BJ Bowness, Kendal. Heavies of which there were many, sold to £164 for a pair from AG Butler, Hambleton. Handy weight hoggs were regularly between the £130 and £140 mark.

Breeding Sheep
A stronger show today with a decent trade right through despite the entire country praying for rain. - It will rain at some point! There was a good mix of goods today with the sale evenly split with hoggs, shearlings and ewes. Continental and Mule ewes with well grown lambs were in the most demand. Topping today was a Texel shearling with twins from JM&NJ Strickland, Whinfell making £360. The same vendor had the top price ewe, with a pen of Mule ewes with twins at £340.
Some new vendors on show today with sheep out if the Lakeland hills, who will have regular consignments for the next few
weeks, these include Texedale, Herdwick, Swaledale and Cheviots with Texel and Mule lambs at foot.
Next week will be the second show and sale of hoggs with lambs, as well as the regular sheep and lamb sale. Catalogue entries close for hoggs close tomorrow. Calves
A nice show of calves forward in Lancaster with trade holding firm despite recent changes to Blue Tongue restrictions.
Bull calves saw the sale toppers from JP&C Robson, Brock fly to £950 with a Charolais from Lancaster regulars David & Eileen Wallbank, Over Wyresdale selling next at £850. Younger sorts sold to £680 for Charolais from JE&SM Seedall, Mellor and £600 for British Blues from J&R Waller, Killington.
Heifer calves were a nice trade, selling to £590 for British Blues from AW&AM Park, Ellel and £530 for a five week old Aberdeen Angus from T&CM Kelsall, Chipping. Plenty more heifers were in the £500 bracket today, for what was a younger show. We encourage vendors to apply for the applicable Bluetongue licences ahead of next weeks sale.

Store show no let up here at Lancaster, with vendors leaving pleased with their days trading.
Bullocks sold to a top of £2580 for a pen of three Aberdeen Angus from Pilling based KH&D Holden, with Lawsons Farm, Cockerham selling a further four Aberdeen Angus at £2500. A pair of British Blue bullocks from EJ Hodgson & Son, Lambrigg also reached £2500, with a further forty eight selling the top side of £2000. Black and white bullocks looked a good trade today, selling to £2150 from EJ Hodgson, Lambrigg with others to £2020 (x5) from EE Thornton, Morecambe.
Heifers sold to £2420 for a Charolais from DJ Townley, Lancaster with a large show of Aberdeen Angus cross selling to £2350 from Lawsons Farm, Cockerham and £2280 from KH&D Holden, Pilling. British Blue heifers sold to £2180 from WT Eastham, Goosnargh with a further twenty-one over £2000.

OTM Cattle
The weekly sale of OTM cattle saw a few less numbers about today, with trade every bit as good as previous weeks, if not a penny or two more.
A handful of OTM bulls saw a top price of £2997 or 339p/kg from A Dixon & Son, Kendal with others from S Pullman, Harrogate to £2425 for a Shorthorn.
OTM cows saw beef bred to £2260 or 339p/kg for a Simmental from Barlow Bros, Preston with other Simmentals from the same good home to £2572. Aberdeen Angus OTM cows sold to £2459 from Pemberton Farm, Ingleton. The best meated dairy cows saw a top of £2353 or 304.5p/kg from DW&EA Cottam, New Hutton with others from the same home £2334. The next grade down was around the 270p/kg to 280p/kg mark. All OTM cows today averaged 267p/kg.
OTM heifers saw an overall average of 311p/kg, with beef bred heifers to 349p/kg for a British Blue from JD EM JA Atkinson, Kendal while Friesian OTM heifers sold to £2260 from GA&A Atkinson, Cantsfield. Other Friesians from JC Hodgson, Dent sold to 319.5p/kg.
Cast steers today sold to 314.5p/kg from EE Thornton & Sons, Heaton. All cast steers today averaged 297p/kg.
