J36 Rural Auction Centre: General Sale ofHorses, Ponies & Donkeys, Saturday 15th November 2025.
REGISTERED SHETLANDS
The sale began with the registered Shetland pony section, setting o with a bang with Lot 2, Doonpark Heidi, a 6 year old black mare selling for 2000gns and her stable mate, Lot 3 Doonpark Harper-Leigh, a blue dun yearling filly selling for 1800gns, both consigned by S Calvert of Dalbeattie.
Lot 38, Adwudr Nant Caramel Machiato, a palomino filly foal to make 31”also sold for 2000gns followed by Lot 54, Edern Immy, a palomino and white filly foal at 1900gns from the Edern Stud, of Anglesey.
Rosie Sandham of Horsforth sold Hermits Susie May, a 6 year old miniature piebald mare and Lowmill Rose, a palomino and white 7 year old mare at 1800gns. Lunespring Sadie, a piebald filly foal from Mr Richardson of the Lunespring Stud sold for 1600gns, whilst Frobridge Claire, a black 6 year old mare from AT Bainbridge of Appleby sold for 1700gns, who also had other mares at 1300 and 1000gns.
GENERAL SECTION
This part of the sale was topped by one of the biggest horses in the sale, Marieth Moretta, a 3 year old registered Shire mare from P Woof of Great Harwood, selling for 6000gns, whilst one of the smallest, an unregistered minature spotted filly foal from Rosie Sandham, sold for 3600gns. Other unregistered shetlands from Susan Winter sold to 2400gns for Clickham Pepi, a spotted colt foal and she also sold others at 1100, 1050, 1000gns.

Mr Stewart of the Studlea Equestrian Centre sold an impressive run of smart big mares and foals, topping with a Shire x mare at 4900gns. Lot 176, a 6 year old sport horse from regular consignor James Pedley of Portpatrick sold for 3600gns and lot 345 a lovely 3 year old unbroken ISH gelding standing at 16.1hh from Alex Yates of Stockport went on to sell for 2500gns.
Cobs were topped by a 4 year old strawberry roan gelding at 4000gns from Mr Pye of Chipping, followed by a smart cob from W Broad at 3200gns and T Harrison of Silverdale
sold a 4 year old piebald cob gelding, ready to break at 2500gns. Paul Wheeler of Wigton sold his piebald 4 year old filly at 2000gns.
Not many donkeys this time but they were topped at 650gns for a yearling jack from JTD Williams of Llanddeusant and 600gns for a jack foal from Nicola Napier, selling to a local farming family.

DW & EA COTTAM DISPERSAL SALE
North West Auctions had the pleasure of conducting the herd dispersal on behalf of DW & EA Cottam, Hagg Farm.
The sale herd sold to £2950 for a fresh heifer giving 32 litres with other heifers selling to £2650 and £2600 x2. New calved cows sold to £2500 for a 2nd lactation giving 34 litres with others to £2400, £2350 and £2300. Mid lactation mixed age cows looking well sold with many £1650-£1800. The herd sold to average £1955.31. We would like to thank Dennis and Liz once again for entrusting us to conduct their dispersal and wish them all the best with their future endeavours.
CHRISTMAS SHOW & SALE OF DAIRY CATTLE

Early Christmas Cheer at NWA J36 with a new sale centre record.
North West Auctions held it popular collective dairy sale which included the Christmas Prize Show, which was kindly judged by Mr D Graves, Carlisle.
The championship rosette was awarded to the first prize heifer from Strickland Hill Farming, Witherslack who enjoyed a good day at the show, also winning the reserve rosette with the first prize cow. JG & BJ Escolme, Killington achieved a clean sweep on the in-calf class from their consignment of heifers due December/January to an Aberdeen Angus.
The sale peaked at £3500 on two occasions with this being a new centre record achieved firstly by Strickland Hill Farming, Witherslack selling the reserve champion Witherslack Supershot Joanne to JS & KM Wilson & Son, Heslington and later again for Witherslack Chase Jo being the show champion which sold to JA & DE Batty & Sons, Burneside.
In calf heifers sold to £2250 for the first prize heifer from JG & BJ Escolme, Killington due End of December to Aberdeen Angus selling to DW & K Shuttleworth, Gargrave, with others £2220 and £2000.

PRIME LAMBS
Prime lambs to £191 and 379p/kg.
The largest entry of the season with 1870 forward and selling to a fast and competitive trade for all types, with well finished lambs in keenest demand. A market SQQ of 321p/kg and an overall average of 314p/kg was achieved, for lambs ranging from 30kg to 62kg.
A top price of £191 was achieved for heavy weight Texels from J&JR Stott, with other heavy weights £172 to £188. The best standards sold to £164 from FI&ME Little, mediums £163 from RHM&S Boyren, lightweights £130 from J Harrison and super lights £105 from K Wrathall.
Mules sold to £156 for heavy weights from WI&AM Atkinson & Son, with standards to £141 from TA&JA Dixon. Horned lambs sold to £145.
Best confirmation lambs sold to 379p/kg from RMH&S Boyren with others in specification pure and ¾ bred lambs nicely 335p/kg to 350p/kg. Best first cross and grass finished lambs were 320p/kg to 330p/kg. Pure hill lambs sold to 325p/kg for Cheviots, Mules to 317p/kg and horned lambs to 292p/kg. Lighter weights sold to 344p/kg for ¾ breds, 318p/kg for first cross and horned lambs to 255p/kg.

Once again nationwide interest in this popular sale of store lambs, with all classes and types keenly competed for with buyers full of confidence on the back of the rising prime market.
Several pens of the very best bred lambs forward achieving £145 to £160 and topping at £170 from I Oldcorn, Appleby. First cross lambs saw the stronger end £138 to £145, with nice level pens of medium keep lambs £120 to £130 and longer keep £108 to £115. Only the smaller end were under £100. Mules sold to £126 from NR&CS Hodgson, Kirkby Stephen with others £125 M&EM Wilson, Middleton in Teesdale, mediums were generally £112 to £125, with longer keep £102 to £110. Five week olds sold to £680 from AD&RL Milner, Brock with others at £620 from JP&C Robson, Brock. Black and Whites a nice trade topping at £520 from JR Newsham.
Heifer calves sold to £970 for British Blues from JS Towers & H Kent who sold Herefords at £740. Six week old British Blues sold to £700 from I Slater, Brock with Limousin to £650 from JR Newsham. Aberdeen Angus from J Bargh & Son, sold for £480 and £470. A handful of stirks sold to £1110 for a British Blue bull from TD&A Gardner, Larbreck sold Blonde to £1080. Three month old Black and Whites reached £800 from JR Newsham.

STORE CATTLE
The weekly sale of store cattle saw a catalogued entry of 214 selling to a sharper trade than previous weeks. A decent show of forward steers on o er, topping the main ring today at £2800 was WD&SW Nightingale, Great Eccleston for a stylish strong Limousin steer. Just behind at £2780 was an Aberdeen Angus steer from H Birkett & Son, Overton. Other Aberdeen Angus steers from T&E Garlick, Freckleton sold at £2700, whos other Aberdeen Angus steers averaged a very pleasing £2450 at 25 month olds. British Blue steers from regular vendor M Shepherd & Sons, Pilling achieved £2600, other British Blue steers to £2500 from JD&GM Bracken, Garstang.
Dairy bred steers saw smaller cattle than previous weeks topping at £2180 for Fleckvieh from JC Prickett, Lancaster with Friesian steers to £1720 from TH Wensley & Son, Freckleton.
A younger consignment of continental cattle from the Isle of Man sold to £1720 for 17 month old British Blue, with Limousin at the same price.
Store heifer saw WD&SW Nightingale, Great Eccleston continue their good days trading with Limousin heifers to £2520. Not far behind at £2500 with British Blue heifers was FI&ME Little, Kendal who also sold Simmental at £2400.
Aberdeen Angus heifers as always were easily sold at Lancaster, topping at £2160 from J&S Winstanley, Preston with others at £2000 from RG&B Lewis, Carnforth.

OTM CATTLE
Lancasters weekly OTM sale saw numbers less after last weeks bumper entry. Trade very similar on the week, with a shortage of quality cattle forward. All classes and types can be easily sold at Lancaster, with the large ringside of buyers.
Just the one cast bull today topping the bottom ring at 389.5p/kg or £3014 for a Limousin from WM&JE Shuttleworth, Barbon.
Cast steers saw a good trade, topping at £2366 or 374.5p/kg from A&FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel for a British Blue. Other cast steers sold to £2341.53 or 379p.kg from T&E Garlick & Son, Freckleton.
OTM heifers from MA Barnes, Kendal saw their Limousin heifers to £2307 or 384.5p/kg and British Blue OTM heifers to £2212 or 349.5p/kg. Other OTM heifers saw Herefords to 349p/kg from A&FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel, with others to 324.5p/kg for MRIs from Barlow Bros, Preston.
OTM cows saw plenty round the 280p/kg mark, topping at £2292.08 or 299.5p/kg for Friesian from Lawsons Farm Ltd, Cockerham. Other Friesian OTM cows sold to 274.5p/kg from EE Thornton & Sons, Heaton with Oxcli e.
Beef bred OTM cows from the IOM saw Simmentals to 294.5p/kg. Other beef bred cows from T Foley, Nateby achieved 279.5p/kg for Herefords with Limousins from F&JM Mason, Carnforth at 269.5p/kg.
