Lancaster Gimmer Lambs Wednesday 13th September The annual show and sale of Mule and Continental gimmer lambs at Lancaster Auction, including NEMSA member lambs was held on Wednesday 13th September. The pre-sale show saw the judging conducted by Harold Keast of Devon and Kevin Sowerby of Appleby. There was double figures of pens of lambs put before the judges to cast their eye over, with the first prized rosette being awarded to Alan, Kim, Chris and Philip Pye of Dunkenshaw Farm. The second prize rosette for the pen of 10 was awarded to Wes, Ann, Colin and Bob Cornall of Bank Farm who also took the first prized rosette for pens of twenty.

The trade topped at £150 for the first prized pen from the Pye Family, this was closely followed by Steven Park of Highfield Farm selling his pen to £148. Many consignments of top pens sold between £120 and £135. Middle runs of lambs looked affordable with the bottom end lambs in demand and well sold with many looking for running lambs. Gimmer lambs sold similar to last year selling to an average of £93. The fifty pound prize for the highest averaged lambs, not including a prize winning pen, was awarded to W & A Cornall of Bank Farm averaging £105.20. A few pens of Aberfield gimmer lambs on offer today from John Huddleston of Annasghyll sold to £82 twice.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 15th September There was a fantastic catalogue entry of 483 Store Cattle this week. The day’s trade was topped at £1500 for an Aberdeen Angus Bullock from CB Heald and Son of Ingleton which was closely followed by JD & GM Bracken of Garstang selling a pair of Angus Bullocks to £1490.

Bullocks from RH Dodgson of Burton in Lonsdale sold to £1480 for a Charolais and £1440 for a Limousin. A large consignment of Charolais Bullocks from P & R Galligan of Woodford saw a pair top at £1390. Aberdeen Angus Heifers sold to £1330 from JD & GM Bracken of Garstang.

The weekly sale of Calves and Stirks saw a bumper entry of 100 forward.

A run of British Blue Bull Calves sold to £428 with others selling to £412 and £400 from AW & AM Park of Ellel. Limousin Bull calves topped at £410 from JN & J Capstick of Brant Beck Hereford Heifer Calves sold to £305 from Cornthwaite Moors Ltd of Poulton-Le-Fylde with the same good home selling Aberdeen Angus Heifers to £290. Beef calves were eagerly bid for but were in short supply to fulfil buyer’s requirements.

Black and White Calves sold to £95 from Drinkall Bros of Over Wyresdale.

There was 18 Stirks forward which saw a slightly easier trade due to purchasers cautious of buying due to the weather. A consignment of Stirks from Cornthwaite Moors Ltd saw British Blue Bullocks sell to £490, Aberdeen Angus Bullocks sell to £480, British Blue Heifers sell to £425 and Aberdeen Angus Heifers to £400.

Once again, the Cast Cow ring saw a large entry of 125 forward selling to a full ringside of buyers which saw an overall average of 120p/kg achieved.

Cast Cows sold to 194.5p/kg for a Limousin Cow from NJ & L Allan of Killington. Dairy Bred Cows sold to 171.5p/kg from J & M Sanderson of Wesham, which also made the top price of Cast Cows selling to £1233.09.

Cast Heifers sold to 184.5p/kg for a Montbeliarde from WR & CM Lawrenson of Preston.

The overall top price of the day was £1315.60 for a Aberdeen Angus Bull from DW & NM Alderson of Middleton.

Monday 18th September A difficult task this morning placing Prime Lambs in the sale ring at Lancaster this morning with an overall average of 149.33p/kg for a smaller show. Top price of the day was £85, forward from GR Newsham, Sellerley Fields for heavy Texel Lambs, with top price per kilo noted at 186p/kg from K Whitaker & Son Ltd of Stirzakers Farm.

J36 Sale Reports Lancaster Dairy Sale Monday 18th September A fantastic entry of 49 Newly Calved Dairy Cattle and Holstein Bulls were forward for Septembers Dairy Sale at Lancaster.

Judging this month was conducted by Mr Raymond Wharton of Segbushwell, he awarded the Champion ticket to the first prize nonhalter led heifer, ‘Liscabank Ashley Sweet 2’ forward from AB&J Parkinson & Son, Liscoe Farm and the Reserve honours to ‘Bleaston Doorman Pauline’ from S Blease, The Barn. Our thanks must go to the judge, Mr Wharton for his time and expertise and to the generous support of our sponsors, Wynnstay.

Leading the way in the Newly Calved Heifer section was ‘Pennine Peace 703’ forward from Drinkall B7ros, Catshaw Hall. This heifer being awarded 3rd prize in the pre-sale show. A ‘Ked Outside Jeeves’ heifer, she went on to sell for £2320. Messrs Drinkall also achieving £2000 for their heifer ‘Pennine Poppy 1302’. The 8 heifers forward from Catshaw Hall sold to average £1852.50. £2200 being achieved twice today, first for the Champion ‘Liscabank Ashley Sweet 2’ from AB&J Parkinson & Son, a Riverdane Ashley heifer. The second for ‘Winterslack Mortgage Tammy’ forward from the Inman Family of Strickland Hill Farming. Messrs Parkinson of Liscoe Farm also sold ‘Liscabank Zeber Charity’ for £2050.

Overall Dairy Champion from AB & J Parkinson & Son

Overall all the newly calved heifers sold to average £1721.33. Newly Calved Cows sold to top at £1820 for ‘Alandrew Smokin Honeysuckle’ from G&AE Smith, Mount Pleasant Farm, and to average £1432.00.

The day’s trade was topped by a Holstein Bull from the Stardale Herd of J Burrow & Son, Tunsteads Farm, which in the pre-sale show had been awarded the Champion Bull ticket. ‘Stardale Rioburner’ was noted in the show ring for his excellent conformation and mobility, coupled with an excellent pedigree behind him of 7 generations of VG/EX classifications, along with many noted awards, with his dam ‘Stardale Outside Roxy’ being a 5-star brood cow and has produced 118 tonnes of milk. All of this leading to the bull being selected by several prospective purchasers, the hammer eventually falling at £3500.

1st Prize, Champion & Highest Price Bull from J Burrow & Son

The bull being awarded the trophy based on Production from the Lancashire Holstein Club was ‘Bilsrow Longton’ from DJ&S Tomlinson. Sired by Wiltor Dreamer and the dam line being noted as having 8 generations of VG/EX. The bull is noted as having an impressive PLI of +£368, and again was admired in the pre-sale show, he went on to achieve £2050.

All the bulls forward for sale went on to achieve an average of £1737.50.

The next sale is to be held on Monday 16th October, with the entries closing on Friday 6th October.

J36 Sale Reports J36 Show & Sale of Pedigree Beltex Rams & Females Followed by ‘Boys Are Back in Town’ Friday 15th September North West Auctions held the annual show and sale of Beltex sheep on Friday evening, which attracted customers from across the region. A catalogue entry of 38 forward for the sale met a buoyant trade throughout for the females forward, with a selective trade for the males. The pre -sale show was expertly judged by Bradley Thompson of Selside, who awarded the champion rosette to Ann Moss, Barnard Castle with her gimmer shearling, ‘Holmebeck Barbie’, sired by ‘Bardnaheigh Torque’ that went onto sell for the top price of the evening of 1,000gns. The run of gimmer shearlings forward from Messrs Moss went on to average 757gns. Rams sold to a top price of 1000gns also from Messrs Moss for ‘Holmebeck Bonzer’.

‘Boys are back in Town’, the second sale of terminal sire breeding rams saw a catalogued entry of 168 rams and females for sale. There was plenty of interest in the sale which grows in size each year. Good quality tups were in demand and good to sell with buyers looking to purchase big carcass tups with good conformation, second rate and plainer types were tougher to place.

The second sale of Mule, Masham and Continental breeding ewes and gimmer shearlings had an entry of 1500 forward selling to a very similar trade, which has been experienced throughout the sale season. Best mule gimmer shearlings from John Wilson of High House selling to £140 twice, with their run of sheep averaging £137.50. Trade for Continentals was very dependent on the quality of the sheep.

A good run of Texel x shearlings from Tony Chapman of North Lodge selling to a top £140 and £138 with plenty of pens selling around the £130 mark.

Tuesday 19th September There was a smaller entry of Prime Lambs forward due to the drastic drop in the price at start of this week and with the better weather, people are taking the opportunity to get some grass.

Lambs were a slightly sharper trade then the previous day’s trade selling to a market average of 154p/kg. Export type and Beltex lambs were good to sell topping at 213p/kg from Ian Little of Barrows Green with plenty of pens of that type selling either side of 190p/kg. Heavy weight Suffolks sold to a top of £99 from JM Sedgwick of Sedbergh with heavy weight and best bred lambs selling into the eighties. Heavy weight Mule lambs sold to a top of £75.50 from ST & SE Allen of Tebay.

There was just short of 500 Cast Ewes forward this week selling to a similar trade as the previous week. There was a large quantity of leaner ewes forward this week, which is to be expected with the weather and time of year. Well-fleshed ewes were eagerly bid for and good to sell with Continental ewes selling to a top of £96 for Texels from JT Proctor of Mireside, plenty of fit ewes were selling around the ninety -pound mark. Best Mule ewes sold into the mid-seventies topping at £77 from JT & A Armistead of Selside with WJ & L Barker of Arkholme selling them to £76. Fit horned ewes were good to sell and in demand, best Rough Fells topping at £59 from JW Little of Soulby, and Swaledales to £47 from FRT Cavendish of Borrowdale with fit Swaledale ewes selling in the forties. Lean types of ewes sold in to the twenties.
