NWA Lancaster Monthly Sale of Dairy Cattle Monday 18th July The monthly Show and Sale of Dairy heifers and cows at Lancaster had a catalogued entry of 30.

The pre-sale show was expertly judged by Andrew Bargh of Penrith. The championship was awarded to lot number 6 Carwood Trump HoneyBee 77 giving 28 litres who was also part of the champion pair of heifers with lot number 5 Carwood Alexander Honeybee 76. The reserve champion was consigned from Drinkall Bros of Catshaw Farm with Lot number 12 Pennine Peace 667.

A quieter ring of buyers than to be expected with many buyers taking opportunity of the good weather and foraging grass.

Heifers sold to an average of £1,492. The day’s top price was the reserve champion Lot number 12 Pennine Peace 667 selling for £2,000. Plenty of modern stylish heifer selling in excess of £1,500 with more heifers needed next month with many buyers expressing interest in heifers. All vendors left well satisfied with their trade.

A six week old Heifer calf Sandcrest Appel 2 from J & M Sanderson of Pasture Barn sold to £300. We welcome youngstock to our sale and have clients looking to purchase youngstock.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 15th July The weekly sale of Store Cattle at Lancaster had a catalogued entry of 300 forward, a strong trade throughout with vendors leaving well satisfied. Strong cattle easily sold this week, a consignment of Angus bullocks from Joe Davis of Weavers Farm sold to a top of £1,420 and £1,410. Native bred cattle of all ages and sizes required for the sale and sold well with buyers looking for all sizes. Limousin bullocks sold to a top of £1,340 from ID Sharples of Moss Croft with heifers selling to a top £1,250 from R & S Mitchell of Greenaways.

Store Cattle Top Prices: An entry of 81 Cast Cows forward, saw a plainer entry of cows in the market with the plainer types selling to slightly less with virtually all cows forward being dairy cows. Cast steers sold to 179.5ppk from JB & C Lamb of Gardners Farm for a Hereford. Frisian heifers sold to 159.5ppk and 149.5ppk from JT Wilson of Bay Horse. Better type of cows sold into the mid to late 120ppk. a market average of 105ppk.

A good show of 30 Calves this morning sold to a fast trade through out. Beef calves topped at £370 for a Blue Bull from Wallbank Farms, Abbeystead. Limousin Heifers to £370 from CR & A Baxter & Son, Middleton, Blue Heifers from the same home to £350. Black and Whites to £140 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. A shortage of black and white calves forward, with younger rearers £45-50.

Monday 18th July A slightly larger entry of over 1,200 Prime Lambs forward today with a more mixed entry of lambs forward and consignments of hill lambs forward, with a market average of 191ppk. Better types of Texel and Beltex lambs sold in excess of 200ppk topping at 213ppk from TR Prickett of Hutton Roof Hall. Heavy weight lambs sold in excess of £90 topping at £95.50 from R Capstick and Son of Fell End. Consignments of Mule Lambs forward sold to £87 from WM Pye of Tarnwater and £83.50 from BD Gill of Yarlsber.

There was 124 Cast Sheep and Rams forward this morning at Lancaster. Overall average today was £58.44. Cast ewes sold well again and were similar to recent weeks. Top price was for a continental at £80 from J & R Waller, Hallbeck and also £80 for a Suffolk from B & J Preston, Ellers Farm.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 14th July A disappointing number of Calves today with just twenty three forward, a trade in which more could have easily been sold to the advantage of the vendors. Beef Calves continue to be in strong demand and very easily sold. David Galbraith of Sunny Bank sold a good consignment of beef calves, saw Limousin bulls sell twice to £370 and British Blue heifers sell to £320. A mixed entry in terms of quality of Black and white calves, better types of rearing calves a good trade selling in excess of £70, topping at £95 from RG & J Clark of Far Audlands.

There was a smaller show of Beef Breeding Cattle at the monthly sale at J36. More Cows and Calves could have been easily sold with buyers going home with nothing bought due to the good prices.

Top price was £1500 for a young British Blue Heifer with a Lim Heifer Calf at foot from M Moorhouse, Hampsfield Hall.

Today was the first sale of the year for Store Lambs where there was a catalogued entry of 264 forward.

An overall averaged of £52.33 was achieved and everything sold. This sale was a new sale and slightly earlier for Store Lambs in this area but everyone was happy with the trade.

Tuesday 19th July A bumper entry of 1,850 Prime Lambs forward today, a very mixed entry in terms of quality and finish leading to a market average of 187ppk. Lambs short in weight today with many pens out of specification but farmers are encouraged to continue to forward lambs to auction as they are getting a good return per head for their lambs, especially for the time of year. Farm assured Suffolk and continental lambs weighing in excess of 40kg were by far best to sell, regularly selling towards the late one hundred and ninety pence per kilogram mark. Better quality export lambs and butcher lambs continue to sell well at J36 with well finished lambs selling in excess of 200ppk topping at 237ppk or £102 from George Harryman of Hawkshead. Heavy weight lambs between 45kg and 50kg sold regularly towards 200ppk.

There were 401 Cast Ewes and Rams forward. A good show of ewes in today and were keenly bid for, buyers were looking for sheep making an overall average of £64.25 Top price was £114 for a Texel Ram from A Crozier, Langside Farm.
