North West Auctions Weekly Report and Newsletter – 20th December

Lancaster Calves, Cast Cows & Store Cattle Friday 15th December There was an entry of just short of 300 Store Cattle for the last sale of the year at Lancaster. A mixed entry of store cattle saw good quality cattle good to sell and in demand.

The trade topped at £1,420 from two different consignments of cattle, firstly from Barlow Brothers of Croston with an Angus bullock and then a Limousin bullock from DE & SM Moorhouse of High House Farm. British Blue bullocks sold to a top of £1,400 from JD & GM Bracken of Greenlands Farm, with plenty of good quality short term bullocks selling in excess of £1,250.

Bulls topped at £1,280 from WR Clark of Barn Hill Farm with British blues. The heifer topped at £1,220 for a Limousin from JS & S Atkinson of Sykes Farm. Once again best black and white bullocks sold in excess of £1,000 topping at £1070 from TE & BM Makinson of Holmgarth.

An entry of 117 Cast Cows forward today saw all types of cows in strong demand and good to sell. There was an overall market average of 110p/kg with black and white cows selling to an average of 103p/kg.

Topping the trade today was OTM heifers selling to 199.5p/kg from JA & J Harper of Capplethwaite Hall with a Limousin. Black and white heifers sold to a top of 154.5p/kg or £1,135 from Gibson and Berry of Low Audlands.

Cast cows sold to a top of 179.5p/kg from M & C Booth of Hartrigg with Simmentals, with Limousin cows from RS & BA Harker of Overthwaite Farm selling to 174.5p/kg. Simmental cows sold to a top of £1,245 from JR Gorst of Dolphinholme House. Black and white cows sold to a top of 154.5p/kg or £1050.99 from P & M Crackles of Mill Farm.

There was a good number of Calves forward for this week’s sale especially following on from last week’s Christmas show. There was a competitive trade with calves selling to a top of £300 for British Blue bulls from JM & MH France & Son of Newhouse Farm, with Angus bull calves to £280 from TM Townley of Knowsley Farm. Montbeliarde bull calves topped at £230 and £220 from JK & B Birkett and Son of White Lund Farm. Weaned black and whites sold to £150 from Sam Wigglesworth of Carnforth with rearing calves topping at £100 from Drinkall Bros of Catshaw Farm.

Lancaster Sale Reports Monday 18th December A lot smaller entry of Prime Lambs in the market today and more could have been sold to the advantage of the vendor, especially wellfinished Continental and Suffolk lambs.

Good quality lambs were very easy to sell with best heavy weight Continental lambs from R & B Parker of High Hallbeck selling to £101 or 200p/kg. Three quarter bred Texel lambs from T Longton and Son of Rooten Brook sold to 209p/kg or £94.50. Well-finished Continental lambs sold over 180p/kg.

There was well over half of the lambs forward in the market being Mule and horned lambs. Mule lambs sold to a top of £79.50 for 47kg lambs from WI and A Atkinson and Son of Holme House with Mules selling in the region of £30 above their weight. Horned lambs best to sell over the 40kg mark selling to a top of £68 for Swaledales from KM & KJ Curwen of Marshaw Farm.

What a difference a week can make, all buyers were keen and looking for Cast Ewes this morning and all selling to a strong trade.

Continental ewes selling into the eighties for larger ewes topping at £87 from M Carr of Carrisholme. Best mule ewes over the seventy pound mark topping at £71 from WM Pye of Tarnwater Farm with horned ewes from the same home selling to £46.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 14th December There was a smaller entry of Store Lambs forward with 1300 lambs going under the gavel, and an entry true to the season and a large proportion of lambs being vendors last draw. Meated Lambs were good to sell, topping at £72 a pen of Texels from JW Robinson & Son, Green Close with other Texels selling to £70 from T Sharp, Gateside Farm. Mule and Hill lambs were strong demand and easily sold, Mules topped at £69 for a pen of 15 from T Sharp with others to £63 E Parker, Marsh House Farm. Cheviots topped at £62 JR Handley, School House and Swaledale lambs topped at £46 from N Burton, Low Haygarth Farm.

The next sale of Store Lambs will be on Thursday 4th January 2018.

Tuesday 12th December The weekly sale of Prime Lambs had a larger entry of lambs forward this week, which saw standard and heavy weights continuing to sell very well, with lighter weights harder to place due to the Christmas demand nearly being over for this specification of lambs.

Once again J36 a strong demand for Beltex lambs selling easily in excess of 200p/kg, topping at 226p/kg from JG&PH Thompson of Poppy Farm, with the best selling to £100 from the same good home.

Heavy weights continue to sell very well at J36, topping at £100 for Charollais’ from J Stott Jnr of Kingsland with best heavy weight lambs regularly in the £90’s.

A few less hill lambs in the market today, saw well finished Mules regularly selling in the region £30 above their weight, topping at £80.50 twice, firstly from R&EA Gardner of Barrowfield and then from Redmayne Bros of Lower House Farm.

There was an overall market average of 176p/kg.

A bumper entry of Cast Ewes this week, with over 600 in the market and as expected selling to a slightly sharper trade. Best Continental ewes in excess of £100, topping at £131 and £117 from R&E Ladds of Benson Hall. Plenty of good ewes selling around the £90 mark.

Best Mule ewes once again selling easily into the £70’s, topping at £80 from W Garnett & Son of Ackenthwaite Farm. Well fleshed Horned Sheep good to sell, with Swaledale ewes selling to £53 from the Inman Family of Strickland Hill, with the best regularly round the £50 mark.
