J36 Christmas Show & Sale of Calves & Dairy Cattle Thursday 13th December The Christmas Show of Calves saw a strong entry forward with quality present throughout. Judging was kindly undertaken by Alasdair Prickett, Farleton who awarded the Championship rosette to a British Blue heifer from JC Hodgson, Dent which later sold for £360. Beef calves were keenly bid for topping at £480 for a Limousin x bull from B Wilson, Crosthwaite. Stronger bulls were generally selling between £280 and £340, with younger sorts £210 to £270. Heifers were easily sold with farmers looking for suckler replacements. Limousin x and British Blue calves were nicely selling at £260 to £320, with younger milk calves £180 to £220.

Dairy bulls sold to £170 for Holstein Friesians from T & J Pritt, Millom. Young Shorthorn calves to £105 from Messrs Robinson, Old Hutton. Dairy bulls averaged £43 to include a large number of young black and whites.

North West Auctions held its Christmas Prize Show and Sale of Dairy Cattle which saw a quality entry of cattle forward, with the judging kindly and ably undertaken by Bob and Pam Miller, Claughton on Brock. The Championship rosette was awarded to the first prize cow, Milnthorpe Pegwire Vall 2, from W Garnett & Son, Ackenthwaite, bred from 6 generations of VG/Excellent cows and giving 45l fresh in to her 2nd lactation; she sold for a final bid of £2000. Other cows sold to £1750 from JM Barton & Son, Lupton.

Heifers achieved a top price of £2100 for a pedigree heifer from PW & D Swindlehurst, Underbarrow. A Friesian type heifer from R & J Dodgson, Natland caught the eye of several bidders and sold for a final bid of £1850. In-calf mature cows, due January to a Limousin bull, sold to £920 from T & J Pritt, Millom.

Heifers sold to £2100, averaging £1740, cows to £2000 averaging £1480 and in-calf cows to £920 averaging £900.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 14th December The last sale of Store Cattle of 2018 saw an entry of 250 forward selling to a slightly sharper trade. Well-fleshed short keep cattle continue to be in strong demand at Lancaster. Topping the trade this week was P Lawrenson & Son of Chorley selling British Blue bullocks to £1300 and £1280, with Limousins from the same good home selling to £1260. Charolais cattle sold to a top of £1260 from H Chapman & Son of Middleton. The Black and White trade sold to a top of £1190 for very well-fleshed bullocks from K & DE Woodhouse of Ellel. The heifer trade was topped at £1150 with British Blues from PF Lee of Over Wyresdale. Native cattle always meet plenty of demand at Lancaster which saw Angus bullocks to £1140 from GH Speak of Eccleston.

Cast Cow trade remains very similar with slightly less than expected forward this week, with an entry of 75. Top pence per kilo was 184.5p/kg or £1225 for 31 month old British Blue heifers from R & E Ladds of Kendal, who also sold heifers to 181.5p/kg. Dairy heifers sold to a top of 164.5p/kg from WR&CM Lawrenson of Winmarleigh. Black and Whites sold to a top of 154.5p/kg or £1236 from J & N Sanderson of Kirkham. There was plenty of OTM Heifers selling around the 150p/kg mark. There was an overall market average of 100p/kg, with best Dairy cows easily selling in excess of 100p/kg with plenty selling in the nineties.

The weekly sale of Claves, which also included the monthly sale of Stirks, saw an entry of eighty forward that with a busy ringside and plenty of demand for stirks. Less calves forward this week due to the big entry of calves the previous week. The stirk trade saw well grown steers sell in excess of the £600, numerous times. They topped at £620 plenty of times for British Blue steers from JE Harrison, Preston and J & A Sheerin of Quernmore with Stabilisers also achieving the same price from Cote Farm Partnership of Nether Kellet. The heifer trade was topped by British Blues from Cote Farm Partnership, selling to £555 with others to £540 from JE Harrison, Preston. Black and whites sold to £300 for bullocks at 6month old from WJ & EA Woodhouse, Nateby.

The calf trade topped at £200 for young British blue heifers with a very young selection calves on offer following on from last week’s very impressive Christmas show.

Monday 17th December The final sale of Prime Lambs at Lancaster of the year had an entry of over 400 forward selling to a ring of seven active sheep buyers. There was an overall market average of 178p/kg with an SQQ average of 183p/kg. The trade topped at £95 for Texel lambs from R & B Parker of Killington with other Texel’s to £94 from TR Prickett of Hutton Roof. There were plenty of lambs selling around the ninety pound mark.

Charolais lambs sold to a top of £88 from RS & IM Kellet of Cockerham with the Suffolk trade topping at £85 from F & E Harrison of Wray.

There were plenty of lambs selling around the 200p/kg mark topping at 227p/kg from F & E Harrison of Wray.

There was a larger quantity of hill bred lambs forward that saw Mules top at £79 from T Ayrton and Son of Over Wyresdale with plenty selling into the mid-seventies. Horned lambs saw Scotch Blackface lambs sell to £73.50 from WM Pye of Tarnwater with Cheviots from the same home to £71.50.

There was a larger entry of Cast Ewes with a busy ringside of buyers to ensure that ewes sold to a competitive trade at Lancaster. The trade topped for Texel ewes from R & B Parker of Killington selling to £83. Charolais ewes sold to £75 from C Ashton-Yamnikar of Hambleton.

Mule ewes sold to £64 from A & FM Bolland and sons of Ellel. Upland ewes from KM & KJ Curwen of Abbeystead with Swaledales to £52 and Cheviots to £49.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 13th November Cast cows sold to a top price of 124.5p/kg for a Limousin x from JE Read, Hutton Roof who sold a Hereford x at 119.5p/kg. Top priced dairy was 109.5p/kg from RG & J Clarke, Endmoor. Meated dairy cattle generally were 78p/kg to 90p/kg, with leaner parlour sorts 65p/kg to 75p/kg.

A cast bull from SJ & M Richardson & Son, Lupton sold at 114.5p/kg and was also the top grossing OTM at £956.

The herd dispersal of Highland cattle on behalf of MS & RH Davies, Hambleton, attracted a large crowd of bidders keen to secure breeding stock. A top price of £580 was achieved for in-calf cows with £410 paid for cows with calves. Heifer stirks achieved £340.

The sale of Store Cattle saw several returning faces ringside, keen to secure replacement stock. All types sold to full value with many buyers leaving short of requirements.

Steers sold to £780 for Limousin x from MW & MR Black, Staveley with others £680 to £740 for younger wintering sorts. Suckler steers sold to £720 for British Blue from I & AJ Armer, Burneside. Dairy bred steers sold to £700 for Fleckvieh from GM Strong, Penrith.

Heifers achieved £770 for Blonde x from GM Strong. Suckler heifers sold to £630 with younger sorts £520 to £600.

Tuesday 18th December There was a smaller entry of Prime Lambs forward this week where more were expected and could have been sold to the vendors advantage. There was an overall market average of 185p/kg achieved with a SQQ average of 190p/kg. Topping the trade today at £99 for Beltex lambs from JG Harryman, Hawkshead. Charollais lambs sold to a top of £95 from DC, D & J Taylor, Kendal. Cheviot lambs topped at £93 from S Crawford, Staveley with Texels selling to £92 from TS & SM Park, Millom. Top price per kilo was 234p/kg from JG Harryman who also sold lambs to 222p/kg and 218p/kg. Other Beltex lambs sold to 216p/kg from WS Burrow & Sons, Silverdale. There was plenty of lambs easily selling in excess of the 200p/kg mark. Mule lambs sold to a top of £80.50 from WI & A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale with other Mule lambs selling to £78.50 from R & EA Gardner, Brigsteer. Horned lambs this week sold to a top of £73 for 40kg Dalesbreds from BD Gill, Ingleton. Swaledales sold to £71 weighing 40kg from M Gibson, Sedbergh.

The next sale of Prime Lambs will be on Thursday 27th December at 9am, the market will be open from 7am to receive livestock.

There was a larger entry of Cast Ewes forward this week with over 600 forward. The trade remains very similar for all types of ewes. Topping the trade today was Beltex x ewes from AE Atkinson & Son, Endmoor achieving £123. Texel ewes sold to a top of £114 from E Dodgson, Kendal who also sold others to £99. Leicester tups sold to a top of £80 from Fishwick Brothers, Long Sleddale. Rough Fell tups topped at £79 from M Bland & Sons, Staveley with Texel rams selling to £78 from the same good home. Plenty of ewes sold in the seventies today. Cheviot x Mule ewes topped at £75 from TH & D Cornthwaite & Son, Grange over Sands. Mule ewes topped at £70 from R & J Dodgson, Natland.

Strong Mule ewes regularly sold around sixty pound mark. Horned ewes saw Rough Fells sell to £55 from JD Dixon, Grange over Sands with Dalesbred selling to £43 from JA Bennett, Long Sleddale with Swaledales to the same price from WI & A Atkinson & Son.
