Lancaster April Dairy Sale Sees the Burrow Family Winning Success On Monday 18th April the monthly sale of Dairy Cattle was held at NWA Lancaster, had a small entry of 12 Cows and Heifers forward. The presale judging was in the expert hands of Andrew Townsend, Nelson. He placed the first prize Halter led heifer, Stardale Mincio Torpedo, as his Champion from J Burrow & Son. His Reserve Champion went to the second place Halter led heifer, Stardale Reflex Vaakje 4, from the same home.

It was a pleasure to see four generations of the Burrows family at the sale, from 96 year old Jim Burrow to Nine year old Great Grandson Issac Burrow, we thank you for your support at the Dairy Sales over the years and look forward to working with you in the years to come.

In the sale ring, it was the Champion leading the way, this cracking heifer, supported by 5 Generations of VG & EX and sold giving 36 litres, reached a final call of £1900, selling to the judge.

The Reserve Champion, Stardale Reflex Vaakje 4, from the renowned Vaakje family, realised £1500, joining the same herd as the Champion.

It was a day of quality rather than quantity, with a very nice show of cows and heifers forward, coupling this with a ringside of both local and travelled buyers, led to a fast trade for all classes. The best heifers sold to average £1490, with two lesser sorts just shy of £1000, leading to an overall average of £1370. Cows sold to £1100 for a second calver from J & M Sanderson, giving 36litres.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 15th April A mixed entry of Store Cattle today at Lancaster with the ever decreasing deadweight price starting to take effect in the store cattle ring for short keep cattle. Good quality cattle with good conformation and carrying flesh continue to sell well with out of specification cattle and lean type’s harder work this week to sell. The ring at Lancaster is still full of buyers still looking to purchase cattle but slightly cautiously, the trade topped at £1,200 for Hereford Steer from Ray Escolme of Bay Horse with British Blue steers selling to the same from RS & IM Kellet of Cockerham with plenty of heavy weight bullocks selling late eleven hundreds. Heifers sold to a top of £1,150 from David Knowles of Windy Hill with a Limousin. The trade for Black and Whites saw fleshed black and whites still eagerly bid for but leaner and plainer types harder to sell. A consignment of cattle from Isle of Man sold very well and would be advantageous for Isle of Man cattle to travel across with British Blue heifers selling to £1,070.

A shortage of number of OTM Cattle forward with just 72 cattle forward and more could have easily been sold with fresh buyers present. A sharper trade with additional buyers around the ring with vendors strongly urged to use the market to sell cast cows as they will certainly see the finanical benefit of doing so. Black and White cows topped at 119.5ppk from GB & EA Metcalfe & Son of Whittingham with plenty of fit black and whites selling between 105ppk and 112ppk with all black and whites averaging 95ppk. All cast cows forward averaged 100ppk.

A very disappointing number of Calves and Stirks forward but a strong trade for all calves forward with vendors leaving well chuffed with their trade. The Wallbank Family of Tills Farm always have good calves forward with Angus Bull calves selling to £345. Three week old Angus Bull calves sold to £305 from Steve Mason of Birkland Barrow. Black and White bull calves to £100 from George Sanderson & Family of Blackleach House Farm with all black and whites averaging in the seventies.

Monday 18th April - Biggest Entry to date for Sheep with Lambs A better entry of Spring Lambs this week in terms of quality and numbers with 46 spring lambs forward selling to a market average of 230ppk topping at 292ppk or £114 from S Wilson & Son of Burrow Heights. Plenty of pens of lambs selling around 230ppk with a lot more interest from buyers this week with better type’s 240ppk-250ppk.

The numbers for Prime Hoggs have started to dry up for Prime Hoggs but a better trade today especially for meated hoggs, that would sell around the 200ppk mark again this week. Horned lambs eagerly bid for and looked a good trade on the day. The overall market average was 166ppk with 39-45kg averaging 172ppk. Trade topped at 205ppk for good quality Texel hoggs from GH Sanderson & Family of Kirkham with the top price of the day £90 coming from the same good home.

A good entry of just shy of 100 Cast Ewes forward. All types of ewes eagerly bid for, with better bred Continental ewes selling in the nineties topping at £101 from B & J Preston of Ellers Farm. A mixed entry of Mule ewes saw better ewes selling easily in to the seventies.

The annual show and sale of Ewes with Lambs at Foot and Shearlings with lambs at foot attracted the biggest entry of sheep this season with well over 300 lives being sold. The trade continues to be hard work in comparison to last year’s trade. The pre-sale show was expertly judged by Maurice Lawson of Ingleton who awarded the overall champion pen to Continental/Suffolk shearlings from Jimmy Woods of Popes Farm. Trade topped at £190 for Champion pen selling with smart Beltex twins. Singles sold to a top price of £130 for a Blue Du Maine shearling suckling a very stylish Beltex gimmer from the same good home. Aged ewes sold to £172 for Continental ewes from James Burr.

Aged mule ewes with strong twin lambs and older ewes with strong lambs continue to be very good sell and eagerly bid for.

As spring draws ever nearer and many people finish lambing, there was a busier ring of buyers today for Calves with fresh faces around making beef calves a noticeable dearer trade on a day and many more beef calves could have been sold to vendors advantage, more beef calves on milk are needed week on week. A strong Black & White trade for an entry of better quality calves. Beef calves topped at £385 for British Blue heifers with cow making potential from JW & TE Sharp of Flodder Hall with others to £380. Month old Limousin bull calves from the Robinson Family of Strickley sold to £330 twice with young beef calves regularly towards £300. Better types of Black & Whites over £100 topping at £120 from HJ Robinson & Son of Elm Trees with young dark rearers selling around the £80 mark. A small selection of stirks saw Angus Bulls from RJ & J Gardner of Natland Mill Beck selling to £490 with seven month old Black & White bulls selling to £300 from Messrs Strong of Penrith.

Tuesday 19th April - Bumper Entry for Sheep with Lambs Forward The weekly sale of Prime Hoggs had a smaller entry forward this week than the previous week, a very mixed end of season show of hoggs forward. A market average of 165ppk reflected in the quality that was forward. Best types of continental hoggs topped at 212ppk from NJ Strickland of The Borrans with ‘in specification’ well fleshed Continentals selling between 190ppk and 210ppk. Heavy weight Mules from Alan Clarke of Low Longmire sold to £85.50 with well fleshed Mules selling between 170ppk and 185ppk. Swaledale hoggs sold to £78 from Alan Clarke of Low Longmire weighing 44kg.

A smaller entry of Spring Lambs sold to a strong trade averaging 272ppk, topping at 300ppk from GM Strong of penrith with Dorset x Beltex lambs at 36kg. Trade topped at £120 from JA & R Geldard & Son of Low Faulshaw with heavy weight charollais lambs.

The annual prize show and sale of Continental and Mule Ewes and Shearlings with Lambs had a bumper entry of just shy of 250 families forward. A good line up of ewes and shearlings forward in front of judge Graham Galbraith of Endmoor Farm who expertly judged and awarded the days champion pen to Alan and Philip Edmondson of Hawkswell.

As seen all season, a very selective trade with many people still waiting for grass to grow, a busy ring of buyers saw the champion pen of two crop ewes sell to £185 from Alan and Philip Edmondson of Hawkswell to the judge Graham Galbraith. Mule gimmer shearlings with twin Texel lambs sold to a top of £188 for the second prized pen from G & KM Atkinson of Green Farm. The first prized pen of Mule shearlings from Alan and Philip Edmondson of Hawkswell selling to the judge Graham Galbraith for £185. Strong mule shearlings and twin lamb regularly sold around the £60 a life mark. Continental shearlings with twins sold to a top of £175 from JA Chapman of North Lodge with Continental shearlings with singles from the same home selling to £140. Strong aged ewes with strong twins sold regularly between £150 and £165 and ewes with singles dependant on size and quality selling between £90 and £110.

Another good entry of 353 Cast Sheep sold to the continuing good trade. Heavy sheep sold in excess of £100, topping at £125 for a Leicester Tup from AW & AM Clarke, Windermere. Suffolks to £109 from S Thompson, Grange over Sands and Texels to £102 from R & E Ladds, Kendal. Best heavy Mules sold into the eighties, topping at £90 for a pen of 4 from SA Hill, Slyne. Lighter, leaner sorts in the late Seventies.

Hill sheep to £80 for a Swale ewe from G Rawsthorne, Nether Kellet, with other best sorts £70-£76. Lesser hill ewes £57-£64 with plainer sorts on realisation. A shortage of heavy sheep forward this morning with 50% of the sale being hill sheep. Overall average of £62 for all ewes forward.
