NWA Lancaster once again proved to be the customer choice to market lambs, another rise in number attracting additional buyers with eight ring side today, all keen to do business. Additional vendors once again present, attracted by the prompted Monday morning sale and all keen to return. Prime Lambs
589 spring lambs were forward today, ranging from 37p/kg to 53kg, selling to an ever-expanding ringside of eight buyers keen to secure all classes and types, and requesting more every week.
An overall market SQQ of 363p/kg was achieved. Well finished in spec lambs were generally selling at 360p/kg to 380p/kg. ¾ and pure bred lambs attracting a premium, ranging from 380p/kg to 395p/kg, peaking at 429p/kg for a pen of Beltex cross from first time vendor M Broadhurst, West Horton. Closely followed by neighbour KA Purtill, Wigan achieving 423p/kg. Others to achieve 390p/kg to 410p/kg were D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe, W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe and T&S Blades, Arkholme. Top price per head was achieved by RH&C Ayrton, Abbeystead for heavy Texels achieving £179, with Charolais cross £178 from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe, Texel cross £175 from J Lamb, Glasson with others £174 from T&ME Longton & Son, Quernmore.
Lighter weight lambs sold to 374p/kg for Texel cross from P&AJ Whitaker, Quernmore and £163 for Beltex cross from M Broadhurst, West Horton.
Buyers are keen to secure well drawn pens of level lambs, with a premium achieved for well finished fed lambs.

Prime Hoggs
An unexpected entry of 90 hoggs were greeted by buyers keen to secure all classes and types. The best sold to 321p/kg for continentals from Cornthwaite Moors, Hambleton. Other well finished continentals were 280pkg to 300p/kg, with end of season sorts regarding from 180p/kg to 240p/kg. Top grossing being Texels and Charolais cross from D Clark, Preston at £163. All hoggs forward averaged 258p/kg.

Cast Ewes
Cull ewes are coming forward in greater numbers on a weekly basis, as farmers look to offload passengers, as they sell lambs ahead of clipping. A wide range of ewes forward today, sold to five keen active buyers, generating an overall market average of £147. Just a handful of the strongest continental ewes forward, selling to £214 from KA Purtill, Wigan who sold others at £198 and £196. Both J Lamb, Glasson and D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe sold Texel cross at £192. Suffolk cross achieved £188 from DR&BE Rolfe, Scorton. Other stronger end first cross ewes were £170 to £185 and mediums £150 to £165. Mules sold to £176 from J Lamb, Glasson, with others at £170 from JE&J Pye, Quernmore and £169 RH&C Ayrton, Abbeystead. Medium Mules were generally £148 to £160. Just a handful of pure hill pred ewes sold to £160 for Cheviot from DR Presotn, Caton, Lleyns £148 from KA Purtill, Wigan. An entry of smaller hard worked Swaledale’s sold to £80 from DM Eames, Abbeystead.

PRIME LAMBS
Prime lamb trade moves up a gear. Up and up and up! More numbers, more buyers and more trade at the weekly sale of prime lambs at Junction 36. An overall average of 366p/kg saw all shapes and sizes up on the week and up on other centres so far this week. Today saw Lleyns hit £207 from JA&R Geldard & Son, Levens. Texels sold to £204 from RJ Stott, Stainton and Suffolks to £202 for a pen of three from CG Birkett, Carnforth. Hampshires topped at £196 from IL Dixon, Carnforth and pure bred Zwartbles hit the £190 mark again from Messrs Geldard. A nice run of lambs from HP Blackwell, Milnthorpe sold well with Texels at 41kg making 402.4p/kg or £165. RJ Stott also had a good run of Texels over the 400p/kg mark, with 49kg lambs making £196 and 46kgs lambs achieving £184. Lighter lambs were also flying, KA Purtill, Wigan sold a pair of 38kg Texels for £148 or 389.5p/kg. E Lund & Son, Carnforth then sold a pen of seven Texels at the same weight to make the exact same. Prime Hoggs
Hoggs also good to sell. A surprising number of hoggs forward, saw an increased trade for anything in good condition. Texels topped at £192 from Messrs JW Robinson, Carnforth. A pen of eleven continentals from PJ&MR Stuart, Sowerby sold for 327.1p/kg. The same home sold a pair of 54kg hoggs to the same pence per kilo or £177. A large number of lighter hoggs around brought the average back, however a very strong trade for the time of year.

Cast Ewes
All cull sheep sold to an animated trade, perhaps dearest seen for a few weeks. Just a handful of pure-bred ewes forward today, which sold to £220 for Texels from A Brown, Carnforth. Other medium pure breds were generally £175 to £190. The strongest first cross ewes sold to £200 for Suffolks from RT&ME Sutton, Kendal, with £195 achieved for Charollais cross from JM&NJ Strickland, Whinfell and Texel cross from KA Purtill, Wigan. Other stronger end first cross ewes were £170 to £190, with mediums £150 to £170. The best of the Mules sold to £180 for Cheviot Mules from A Brown, Carnforth with medium North Country Mules at £168 from RT Gorst, Killington with others £165 from T Ellis, New Hutton and MG&J Parker, Wennington. Mediums Mules were generally £140 to £155. Pure hill ewes sold to £190 for Lleyns from JA&R Geldard & Sons, Levens, Cheviots £180 from KA Purtill, Wigan, Gritstones £140 from S Whitehead, Middleton, Herdwick £134 from K Hartley, Bootle, Swaledale £130 from AJ&L Birkett, Ambleside and Rough Fells from £122 RJ&OB Simpson, Longsleddale. Medium horned ewes were generally £80 to £100, with the smaller leaner end £60 to £80 and only a few less.
An abundance of cull rams saw the stronger end sell to £220 from TA&JA Dixon, Selside with others at £208 from MPG Gibson, Crossthwaite. Medium continental rams were regularly £160 to £180, with pure hill rams £125 to £140.

Breeding Sheep
The final sheep and lamb sale saw a solid trade right through. Texel and Mule ewes remained strong with an average of £85 per life. Herdwick ewes with lambs were good to sell, with twins making £65 per life and singles making £80 per life. Calves
As expected, a small offering of calves forward today, whilst our contingent of loyal Lancastrians grasp this opportunity of good weather to gather much needed crop.
The sale peaked today at £730 for a Charolais bulls from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale who sold Aberdeen Angus to £700. Young British Blue bulls sold to £600 from AD&RL Milner, Claughton on Brock with Black and White bulls this week selling to £420 from WN&D Smith, Cockerham.
A sweet but youthful show of heifer calves sold to £550 from RT Halhead, Cockerham with Aberdeen Angus to £470 from WN&D Smith, Cockerham.

Store Cattle
A reduced number forward today, with farmers taking advantage of the fine weather to catch up and get ahead on field work. Just a handful of strongest steers forward selling at £2480 for Aberdeen Angus cross from both JS Clark & Sons, Catforth and RG&B Lewis, Middleton. Others were nicely £2200 to £2400. Younger steers sold to £2180 for Stabiliser cross from M Allen, Carnforth who also sold Aberdeen Angus cross at £2120. Dairy bred steers sold to £1780 for black and whites from TH Wensley & Son, Kirkham. All steers forward averaged £2003.

A ring full of Aberdeen Angus cross heifers from KH&D Holden, Pilling sold to £2260. Closely followed by a ring full from AT Burrow & Son, Hornby at £2240. Other finished type heifers were £1950 to £2100. All heifers forward today averaged £1978.

OTM Cattle
Numbers remaining consistent with all buyers keen to secure all types of cows, with trade every bit as strong as recent weeks. Just a handful of beef cows today, selling to 314.5p/kg on two occasions for Limousin cows from MB Fawcett, Burton in Lonsdale. Other medium feeding types sold to 279.5p/kg for a Limousin from J&J Huck, Burneside, with others 260p/kg to 275p/kg. Top grossing beef cows was a Limousin from MB Fawcett, Carnforth totalling £1846.
Just a handful of the heaviest well fed dairy cows forward today selling to 279.5p/kg from JR&S Handly, Haversham with others 274.5p/kg from Lawson Farm Ltd, DW&EA Cottam and EW&RM Towrs. Other medium well fleshed cows were 260p/kg to 270p/kg, with better parlour type cows 245p/kg to 260p/kg and only the lighter weight and leaner less. The top grossing dairy cow achieved £2146 on two occasions from Lawson Farm, Cockerham and DW&EM Cottam, New Hutton. Other heavier well fleshed cows were regularly £2000 to £2150, with nice straight parlour types £1480 to £1700.
OTM beef heifers sold to 359.5p/kg for a British Blue cross from MJ Shepherd & Son, Pilling with Aberdeen Angus cross selling to £2171 from AT Burrow & Son, Hornby. Dairy heifers sold to 269.5p/kg from JR&S Handley, Haversham with others at £1600 from Lawsons Farm Ltd, Cockerham.
OTM beef steers sold to 334p/kg and £2286 for Aberdeen Angus cross from JD EM JA Atkinson, Kendal. A single cull bull sold to 249.5p/kg and £2737 for an Aberdeen Angus cross from Lawson Farm Ltd, Cockerham. All cows today averaged 249p/kg, OTM heifers averaged 274p/kg and OTM steers averaged 320p/kg.
