NWA Lancaster - 27th May All classes of Store Cattle a sharper trade today, unfortunately numbers short with only 150 forward, leaving all buyers short and some not even getting off the mark. Topping the sale was PM & ST Entwistle, Abbeystead and J & JM Walmsley, Pilling, with Limousins and Angus’ realising £1270. Heifers sold to £1190 for a Charolais from Steve Walton of Pheonix Grain.

A lesser entry following last week’s bumper entry of Cast Cows, with 66 forward. Top gross came from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with a Holstein cow totalling £1063, closely followed by D Fox & Co, Bay Horse with an 1152kg Holstein bull realising £1055. Top price per kilo of 157.5ppk for an Angus Heifer from R Oldfield. Dairy cows to 129.5ppk from GB & EA Metcalf & Son, Mansergh.

The Monthly Stirk sale saw another good entry, with 91 forward. Best stirks sold well, with anything out of specification hard to place. Topping the sale was JR & J Gorst, Quernmore with a Blue Heifer selling to £705. J & CW Metcalfe & Son, Quernmore, sold Charolais Bullocks to £665 and Blues to £660. Best Angus’ good to sell, with M & E Forshaw & Son, Longridge realising £570 for a pair of bullocks at 6months. Best sorts of Black and Whites saw a trio of bulls at 3months from Kelsall & Wood, Scotforth sell to £235 and four 8 month Bullocks from J & CW Metcalfe & Son to £460.

In the Calf section, top call was £410 for a 7week Blue Bull from David & Eileen Wallbank, with another from JE & J Pye & Son at £360. A run of young beef calves from Eddy and Angie Newsham sold to £250 for Simmental Bulls at only 9-11days old! Black and whites sold to £110 again from Wallbank Farms.

Dub How Farm Sale Saturday 28th May There was a good turn out of people for the Farm Sale on behalf of Mr R Walker of Dub How, Sawrey.

Prices achieved saw a MF 5445 08 Plate with 2700hrs sell for £16,000, a Kubota Digger sell for £5700, Bobcat with Attachments sold for £5100 and a Welger RP220 Round Baler sell for £3800.

In the items by permission section a Cheifton 12ft Dump trailer sold for £3500.

Lancaster Sale Reports Monday 30th May The largest entry of Spring Lambs to date this year at Lancaster we all vendors leaving well satisfied with their trade. An entry of 500 lambs forward sold to a market average of 198ppk. Continental lambs easily selling in excess of 200ppk with Suffolk mules selling in the mid 190ppk. Trade topped at £94 for a couple of smart Charollais lambs from K Whitaker and Son of Stirzakers Farm. Chris Alty of Moss House Farm sold lambs to 214ppk with plenty of vendors in excess of 210ppk for better types.

A smaller entry of 128 Prime Hoggs today saw well fleshed types sell in excess of 150ppk. Continental hoggs sold to £82 from RG & H Preece of Thornbush.

A good show of Cast Sheep this week were met by the continuing strong trade at Lancaster. The first sheep in the ring topped the sale at £115 for a Texel from JM Sanderson, Halton. Best sheep up and over £90. Mules to £74 from GM & R Whitaker, Goose Green.

There was just a small entry of Breeding Sheep with lambs at foot today but a strong trade for Mule Hoggs with lambs at foot. Trade topped at £155 from Mark Wilson of Gill Garth with Mule hoggs and single Suffolk lambs. A few older families forward today sold in the late forties per life.

No Prime Cattle forward today but cattle required to fulfil buyer’s requirements.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 26th May What a shame not more Calves forward today as more could have easily been sold to vendors advantage with a busy ring of buyers forward.

An entry of 42 forward today. Beef calves easily sold, with British Blue bulls averaging £421, topping at £440 from G Wilson of Low Field Farm of Appleby, with the majority being around 2 months old. Young beef calves regularly selling in the late two hundreds. Some good quality black and white bull calves and weanlings forward today. 10 to 12 week old weanlings today regularly sold in excess of £200 topping at £250 from G Wilson of Low Field Farm of Appleby.

There was only one Stirk forward from Fishwick Brothers of Middle Sadghyll selling a Limousin heifer to £580.

We had 74 Store Cattle forward. There was a mixed show of cattle forward today. Long-keeping grass cattle a very good trade, with stronger cattle similar to recent weeks.

Tuesday 31st May A smaller entry of Sheep and Lambs than the bumper entry the previous week. A strong trade throughout, aged Charollais ewes with twin lambs sold to £178 from G & LJ Caine of Stank. A selection of ¾ Texel hoggs from JA Chapman of North Lodge sold to £170. Buyers still looking to purchase Sheep and Hoggs with lambs at foot and vendors kindly asked to enter for advertising.

The largest entry to date yet this season of Prime Lambs at J36 Rural Auction Centre, with 785 being sold. An overall market average of 195ppk with lambs between 33kg and 39kg averaging 198ppk. Continental lambs regularly selling in excess of 200ppk, with Beltex types lambs selling easily in excess 220ppk topping at 230ppk from E Lund & Son of Lundholme for lightweight lambs. Light weight lambs very good to sell around 32-36kg making in the region of 200ppk, with better types easily selling in excess of 200ppk. The top price of the day was £108 from RJ Stott of Crosscrake with a pair of smart lambs. Suffolks averaged 193ppk.

A strong entry of Prime Hoggs for the time of year with 266 forward. Well fleshed heavy hoggs sold into the eighties and nineties. Standard weight hoggs, well fleshed sold between 165 and 180ppk. The top price was £94 from M and M Carr of Clawthorpe Lodge, with Continental hoggs from SH & PI Bowes of Barrow in Furness selling to 182ppk.

A small entry of Cast Sheep sold to a dearer trade than seen last week. Well fleshed big framed sheep once again over the £100 mark, topping at £122 for a Texel Ewe from TL & S Cross, Westhouse. Mules sold to a top of £85 from John Bell, Wennington, with the best £77-£82 and an average of £70 right through. Hill sheep to £87 from D & D Huddleston, Wray. Swales to £71 from FI & ME Little, Kendal. Overall average of £69 for all forward.
