NWA J36 Sale of Rough Fell Rams on behalf of the Rough Fell Sheep Breeders Association Saturday 15th October The annual show and sale of registered Kendal Rough Fell Rams on behalf of the Rough Fell Sheep Breeders Association took place on Saturday 15th October at J36 Rural Auction Centre. There was a catalogued entry of 211 Rams for the sale.

The pre-sale show was, once again, well supported with a good turnout in each class. Our thanks go to the judges for giving up their time and expertise. A special thank goes to our sponsor H Pigney & Son for their continued support and thanks go to Andrew Woof for his presence at the sale. The championship rosette was awarded to Lot 155 High Cark Ziggy, a shearling Ram, from I & JM Mallinson, Borrow Bridge, Shap with the reserve champion also going to a shearling, lot 66, Zazu from D Stephenson, The Gables, Ravenstonedale.

A large entry of Rams forward for the sale sold to a selective trade this year, with breeders looking for powerful stylish Rams. Aged Rams sold to a mixed trade topping at 700gns from JE Harding, Winllan, Penisarwaen for lot 6 Lockbank W3. The first prized aged Ram sold to 450gns from J Hunter, Galloper Park Tebay. A difficult Ram Lamb trade was endured topping at 300gns from J Hunter, Galloper Park, Tebay with Ram Lambs averaging £151.

The day’s shearling Ram trade topped at 6000gns for the Champion, lot 155 High Cark Ziggy, a shearling Ram, from I & JM Mallinson, Borrow Bridge, Shap coming from the same home as last year’s record breaking price Ram. This Ram sold in a three way split to A & H Watson, Middleton Hall, H Chapman & Son, Millbeck and A Troughton, Moors Farm. Other notable prices in the Shearling section were 4500gns for lot 146 ZZ Topper from E & K Bland, Cotegill, Gaisgill selling to MP & A Capstick, High Lane. Also achieving 4000gns MJ Handley, Catholes, Sedbergh with lot 128 Zero selling to I & JM Mallinson, with all shearling Rams forward selling to an average of £501.

There were 15 Rams selling for 1000gns or more, which is a credit to the breed society and North West Auctions would like to thank the society for their continued support and hard work in making the sale a success with a lovely selling atmosphere.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 14th October Store Cattle to £1,420 at Lancaster A quieter week this week for Store Cattle at Lancaster with over 400 cattle going through the ring. Plenty of well fleshed strong cattle forward today having taken advantage of the good weather over the previous week, with animals certainly looking in better form. A sharper trade with one or two faces around the ring that we haven’t seen for a while. Six bullocks sold for £1,400 or more topping at £1,420 from R & DM Rossall & Son of Abrahams Farm with a British Blue. An impressive pen of four Limousin bullocks from Robin and Margaret Dodgson of Kilburn house sold to £1,400 with J & O Galbraith of Endmoor also selling a Charolais steer to £1,400. Plenty of well fleshed short term bullocks selling in excess of £1,200 with numerous breaking the £1,300 barrier. Angus bullocks sold to a top of £1,380 from H Birkett and Son of Overton with Angus bullocks from the same home selling to £1,250. Heifers sold to a top of £1,240 for British Blues from R & DM Rossall & Son of Abrahams Farm. Holstein Friesian bullocks sold to a top of £1,150 from J Lamb of Old Glasson with a Holstein Friesian bullocks forward selling to an average of £741.

Once again, an entry of one hundred OTM Cattle forward at Lancaster, all types of cows selling to a sharper trade with one or two fresh faces around the ring, which is always good to see. A very lean entry of cows forward as to be expected for the time of year as many look to clear out ready for laying in. Over thirty month heifers and steers eagerly bid for topping at 179.5ppk from R & S Mitchell of Greenaways with a Limousin heifer. Cast cows topped at 174.5ppk for a Limousin cow from JR & A Thornton of Coventry farm. An overall market average of 94.5ppk reflecting more in the entry of cattle forward today.

A smaller entry of just shy of 40 Calves forward this week sold to a continued strong trade with once again a busy ring of buyers at Lancaster. Plenty of demand for beef calves with a shortage of calves for the number of buyers in the ring with more calves needed each week. British Blue bull calves sold to a top of £385 JM & MH France of Newhouse Farm with Angus bull calves from the same good home selling to £285. Angus bull and heifer calves sold to a top of £300 from Wallbank Farms of Abbeystead. Friesian bull calves from the same good home sold to a top of £180.

A selection of weanling black and white calves from Jones of Sandvilla sold to a top of £185 with other regularly selling around the £170 mark.

A full ring of people for the Store Lambs saw a strong trade throughout with an entry of long keep lambs with majority not going to be ready until into the New Year. Trade topped at £63.50 from Ripley St Thomas with a pen of Texel’s with lambs from the same home selling to £59.

Plenty of pens of lambs in the mid to late fifties with Mule lambs selling to a top of £52 from PD Pye of Marl House.

Monday 17th October North West Auctions Lancaster had on offer 620 Prime Sheep and 172 Cast Sheep at the weekly sale.

Prime Lambs had a similar entry to last week with many vendors sitting tight with Lambs in hope of a price increase. All buyers were in attendance and were looking for Lambs but only at a price. Topping the sale today was a pen of 56kg Texels, consigned by J Bargh & Son, North Farm, Heaton and realising £86. Heavy weight Lambs were harder to sell on the previous week as more become available on the market. Top price per kilo for lambs was 186p for a pair of 39kg Texels consigned by Ian T Richardson, Beech Grove House, Preston.

Light and handy weight lambs were selling at a similar trade today, 170-180p for well bred, meaty types, and were keenly bid for. Strong lambs, with a good cover were realising £80-£85. 620 Prime Lambs averaged 159p/kg.

Once again, a strong number of Cast Ewes forward for Lancaster with over 170 going under the gavel. Top price per head was a pen of Texels consigned by Bargh Contractors, Old Woodhouse, and realising £89. Continentals were selling to £69, consigned by J Burr, Little Fell.

Tups sold to a top of £97 for a pair of Texels consigned by G A Haston & Son, Lane House, Galgate.

Lancaster Sale Reports Lancaster Monthly Dairy Sale Monday 17th October Today, Monday 17th October, NWA held its monthly Show and Sale of Dairy Stock, having 53 head on offer.

The judging this morning was in the capable hands of Mr Michael Kenyon, Chipping, with strong classes put forward for him to cast his eye over.

His overall champion choice went to catalogue number 20, for a stylish in milk, 5th generation Millie hfr – Stardale Massey Millie, giving 31L, consigned by J Burrow & Son, Tunsteads Farm, Barton, and realising £1950 to W & A Sudell & Son, Lower Park Head, Woodplumpton.

His Reserve Champion rosette went to number 16 in the catalogue, for a tremendous well pedigreed hfr in milk – Stardale Pirlo Vaakje, producing 31L of milk, also consigned by J Burrow & Son, and was purchased by W & A Sudell & Son. Topping the sale was D J & S Tomlinson, Bilsborrow Hall Farm, Bilsborrow, for an in milk hfr – Bilsrow Yen Fantee, realising £2120, and she goes to join the herd of A P Townsend, Doughty Farm, Nelson.

Purchasers were looking for stock with known pedigrees and high yielding families.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 13th October A large entry of Calves and Stirks this week saw a British Blue bull calf topping the sale, realising £440, and consigned by R Morris-Eyton & Son, Beck Side, Whicham and leading the heifer calf trade was a British Blue, which sold for £355, and was consigned by J W & T E Sharp, Flodder Hall, Lyth.

There was a brisk trade for continentals and native bred calves and Black and White calves, that were well bred and stronger, sold to a sound trade, topping at £115 for a bull calf, consigned by R J & K R Wilkinson, High Foulshaw Farm.

Native bred calves met a top price of £250 for an AA bull, consigned by H J Robinson & Son, Elm Tree Farm, Preston Patrick, with Stirks selling to £360 for a Hereford bull,consigned by F P & G Slater, Bellart Howe, Witherslack. 75 Bull Calves avg. - £96.40, 16 Heifer Calves avg. - £162.69 and 2 Bull Stirks avg. - £280.00 Calf Top Prices: Bull Calf: Brb £440 Beck Side, £395, £390 Flodder Hall, £360 Ormside, £310 Beck Side, £295 Townhead Farm. The trade for the OTM Cattle was definitely sharper on the week, and they were in demand. Black & White types sold to a top of 121.5p, scaling 465kg, and consigned by G M Strong, School Hill, Maulds. Continentals bred cows sold were selling from 105-110ppkg.

OTM Cows, sold to a top of £915.45 and 127.5p for a 718kg Stab, consigned by A Dixon & Son, Kit Cragg, Selside. OTM Bulls, topped the sale at £1019.10 and 107.5p for a 948kg Limousin, consigned by R I Dixon, Low Newton Farm. 44 OTM Cows avg - 90.01p and 1 OTM Bull avg - 107.5p

There was a good show of 87 Store Cattle on sale at today’s sale, where all classes met a steady trade. Topping the sale today was a Friesian Bullock from R & A Galbraith, Carter House and also a Limousin Bullock from R Cowin & Sons, Hawkrigg Farm. The Heifers saw a top price of £880 for Charolais from JC Walling & Son, Dawson Fold.

North West Auctions J36 had forward 1402 Prime Sheep and 578 Cast Sheep at the weekly primestock sale.

Topping the Prime Lamb sale today was a cracking 52kg Beltex selling for £98 consigned by P & T L Edmondson, Low Hall Farm, Kirby in Furness. Top price per kilo for lambs was 208.8p/kg for a shapely 40kg Charollais, consigned by J Moorhouse & S Richardson, Broughton House Farm, Field Broughton.

Nice handy weight lambs, that had a good cover of meat and shape, were selling from 170-180p/kg. Well-bred heavy types, 50kg plus, met a firm demand, selling from £80-£90. With any sheep that were lacking in condition were harder to sell. There as an overall market average of 160p/kg.

Once again, a good entry of Cast Sheep forward at J36 Rural Auction with just shy of 600 forward. A better then anticipated trade with better types of ewes a noticeable stronger trade then last week’s sale.

Cast rams were eagerly bid for selling to a top of £158 for a couple of Texels from J & D Chapman of Wray Farm with Suffolk rams selling to £117 from F & SA Edmondson of Netherhouses. Strongest Texel and Suffolk ewes were always good to sell and eagerly bid for topping at £97 from AW Crowe of Ashtree Cottage for Texel ewes with others selling into the nineties. Plenty of pens of ewes were into the eighties with Mule ewes selling to a top of £65 from E Parker of Marsh House.
