Weekly report & newsletter NWA Lancaster Christmas Dairy Show & Sale The Christmas Dairy Sale saw another large entry, attracting buyers from Cumbria through to the Midland Counties. The presale show saw a nice turn out of quality heifers put before judge and regular purchaser Stuart Forshaw. The Champion Rosette was awarded to regular vendor James Burrow with Stardale Twist Vaakje 2, who stood first in the halter-led heifer class. This flashy heifer, giving 31litres, went on to sell for £2220 to the judge. As well as taking the champion rosette, this heifer also made up half of the best pairs, with Lot 7, Stardale Twist Vaakje being the other half which went on to sell for £2080.

Taking the reserve rosette was Messers Inman of Strickland Hill with Witherslack Stanleycup Karen, she later went on to sell for £2050 to Messers Walmsley, Clitheroe.

In the cow class, JH Towers & Son, Tunstall Hall took the first place rosette with Tunstall Tant Margaret, this very nice second calved cow, classified GP82 and bred from three generations of VG cows saw frantic bidding and realised a final call of £2050.

Top price of the day came from Alan & Andrew Smith, Mount Pleasant, with a non-pedigree Lucente sired heifer selling to £2400 from an undisclosed northern bidder. In general a sharper trade this month in comparison to last with a total of 10 cattle selling in advance of £2000 with an overall average of £1820 for all cows forward and £1780 for heifers, £150 up on the previous month.

Three in-calf heifers from JH Towers & Son sold well, topping trade was Tunstall Ross Meggie, this strong heifer, due at the end of November to Picston Shottle saw a final call of £1550. Others from the same home sold to £1520.

NWA Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 7th November A catalogued entry of 415 Store Cattle were met by a full complement of buyers this morning. On the whole a good show of cattle was put forward with a 100% clearance being achieved. All vendors left highly satisfied with the prices achieved. Regular vendor DE & SM Moorhouse from Natland topped trade again this week at £1470 with a 29month Blue Bullock and another 28month Charolais bullock at £1430. Limousin bullocks sold to £1360 from BN Greenwood. Native bred bullocks from P Lawrenson, Chorley sold to £1280 for a pair of Angus at 18months. A pen of four Friesian bullocks sold to a top of £1150 from JS Clark & Son, Godson House. Others from James Lamb, Old Glasson sold to £1140.

Heifers sold to £1290 from Jim Bracken, Catterall with a pair of Charollais. Blondes at 20month sold to £1260 again from BN Greenwood. Allan Edmonson, Broughton Beck, sold younger heifers to £1180 for Lims and Blues.

All classes of OTMs were a sharper trade this morning, topping at 189.5ppk for a Lim heifer from O Butler, Kirkham. Top price per head was achieved by M & RW Stirzaker, Milnthorpe, again with a Lim heifer selling to £1053ppk. Cast cows sold to a top of 179.5ppk for a Limousin from M & L Preece, High House. Friesian heifers sold to a top of 149.5ppk from JH Towers & Son, Tunstall. Friesian cows sold to 129.5ppk from G Atkinson & Son, Old Hall. Lancaster is once again the leading auction for Cast Cows in the area with an overall market average of 103ppk, some 20-30ppk up on other local centres.

Trade slightly easier this week, with an entry of 63 Calves and Stirks forward, made up of predominantly black and white and younger beef calves. Trade topped twice at £325 with a Welsh Black bull from R & A Batterbee, Goosnargh and JM & MH France, Littledale with a Blue Bull. Younger blues sold to £245 for bulls from Sam & Allan Bargh. Angus bulls again from R & A Batterbee sold to £320 with Angus heifers from Wallbank Farms selling to £210. Friesians sold to £165 & £155 from C Wilson with younger Friesians selling to £125 from Wallbank Farms. Best sorts £70-£100, plainer sorts £40-£65, all black and whites averaged £48. Stirks sold well with an MRI bullock selling to £450 and a trio of Angus Heifers selling to £400 from A Tattersall.

This week saw cash prizes being offered for top price Native bred animal in each section (excluding Angus & Hereford).

NWA J36 Sale Reports Thursday 6th November The sale of Dairy Cattle saw an entry of 16 forward with buyers in attendance for all classes. Heifers sold to a top price of £1750 for a pedigree heifer from E & K Bland followed by a pair of heifers from W & CW Dent achieving £1700. Cows peaked at £1550 for a fresh 3rd calved cow from GM & AM Wilson & son.

N/C Cows - £1550, £1520 N/C Heifers - £1750, £1700 x2, £1600 The dispersal sale of Beef Breeding cattle on behalf of the late A Armitstead saw a top price of £1750 paid for a Lim x cow with 5m/o Lim bull calf with others at £1500. A consignment if incalf heifers due Feb onwards from MJ Waller sold to £1220, £1200 with a large ringside of buyers keen to make purchases of replacement breeding stock.

Store cattle sold to a top price of £1200 for Sim x steers from FW Park who sold others at £1090, well grown feeding steers generally £900 +. Heifers peaked at £975 for Hereford x from JA Chapman with others achieving £850 +. Young stores sold to £990 for steers with suckler heifers £685.

The weekly sale of Calves and Stirks at J36 saw a fantastic entry of 98 forward this week selling to a full ring of buyers eager to purchase every class of calves. A strong entry of 55 beef calves this week with plenty more could have been easily sold to another strong trade at J36. Best sorts of beef bred bulls easily sold over £300 topping at £420 from Ian Little of Helm Croft with a suckler bred Limousin Bull calf. British Blue bulls twice sold to £390 from Messrs JW & TE Sharp of Flodder Hall. There was a strong demand for beef heifer calves with plenty of men around the ring looking for potential cow making heifer calves. Heifer calves topped at £350 for British Blues from Messrs JW & TE Sharp of Flodder Hall with others easily sold into the mid to late £200’s. Black and whites once again sold in line with other centres now at J36 with best sorts of British Friesian calve selling to £195 from DJ & S Stainton of Beck House with young sorts of British Friesians from the late A Armitstead, Hullater Farm selling between £145 and £130 with rearing Holstein calves selling between £60 and £90.

An entry of 556 Store Lambs forward saw middle to best sorts of lambs sell to a strong trade with small plain lambs slightly harder to place with many consignments of peoples last draws of lambs. Big short keep lambs were in strong demand with many more could have easily been sold selling to a top price of £70 from John Nuttall of Low Bendrigg Farm with other short keep continental lambs easily selling over £63 with plenty of midterm lambs selling into the late fifties. Mule wether lambs sort of requirement today selling to £59.50 for midterm lambs from Martin Robinson of Roundthwaithe.

A very mixed show of Cast Cows were put before a full ringside of buyers with buyers looking to purchase cattle which were full of meat, whilst leaner cows were harder to sell. Cows topped at 149.5p/kg for a Limousin cow from E & S Bower of Ulverston, with top price per head going to RA & L Hodgson of Patton for a pure Charolais cow selling to Dawn Duerden for £1201.10. Black & White Cows topped at 144.5p/kg for a young cow from AE & M Hayhurst of Natland.

An overall market average of 104.36p/kg was achieved.

Tuesday 11th November On Tuesday the 18th November, J36 Rural Auction Centre held their weekly sale of primestock where a full ringside of buyers ensured lambs were very strongly bid for and saw very little change in price on the week.

2,922 prime sheep were forward with Prime Lambs topping at £90 per head for a single Beltex lamb from LM & C Whitaker of Kirkby-in-Furness, this lamb was also the top price per kilo at 209.3p. Commercial well finished export type lambs were regularly 185-195p/kg. Once again a good show of hill lambs were forward with Mules topping at £80 a head from J & JA Coates & Son of Westhouse with plenty of pens of lambs £78-£79 per head (£32-£35 above weight) Farm Assured lambs were in particular demand. Horned lambs peaked at £66 per head for Rough Fell from GH Capstick & Sons of Birkhaw.

With new buyers stood ringside all classes of Cast Sheep met a very sharp trade on average being £4 dearer than the previous week’s trade. Sheep topped at £112 per head for a pen of Texel ewes from P Cummings of Burton.
