NWA Lancaster - Lancaster Lads Thursday 13th August The annual show and sale of Terminal sire rams attracted a strong entry of rams forward for the sale with buyers travelling far and wide to attend the sale. A selective trade with good quality rams in strong demand and well sold as many purchasers were looking to improve the quality of the prime lambs sold. A high clearance rate 79% achieved for an early sale. Thanks goes to the pre-sale judges for sparing their time and expertise in judging a quality line-up of rams. We also thank the North West Suffolk breeders club for their continued support and sponsorship of the Suffolk sheep classes. Thank you to the sale sponsors of Country & Commercial Insurance Brokers. In what was a strong line up of rams the overall championship rosette was awarded to JT & J Kelsall of Summerlands with a Texel Shearling. The reserve champion was awarded to ST Birkett of Hall Croft with a Beltex x shearling. Buyers were looking for strong well-grown rams with good conformation. A small entry of Charollais rams met plenty of demand as shearlings from MP & A Lee of Cinder Hill selling to £480. A good entry of Texel and Beltex x rams saw the reserve champion sell to the day’s top price of £880 from ST Birkett of Hall Croft. James and Joe Wannop of Heaton Hall twice sold Beltex x rams to £700. The champion ram from JT & J Kelsall of Summerlands sold to £680. Good tups easily sold £500 plus with others selling £350 plus. There is always a good consignment of Suffolk rams at Lancaster. Buyers slightly cautious of purchasing Suffolk rams this year with current prime lamb prices. The champion Suffolk ram was awarded to the shearling from S & G Mellor of Windicott Farm who has won the Rowan Cherrington cup for three consecutive years and went onto sell for a top price of £650. A large entry of Suffolk ram lambs met plenty of interest topping at £580 from Alan Blair of Thornfleet. It was nice to welcome a couple of Hampshire Down shearling rams to Lancaster from Graham and Judith Galbraith of Endmoor that sold to £400 and £350.
NWA Lancaster - Monthly Dairy Sale Monday 17th August A smaller show of Dairy Cattle forward this morning were met by a full ringside of local and travelled buyers. The pre-sale show was judged by Jack Raby of Preesall, who awarded the champion rosette to the first place cow, Lot 23, Kirkwood Goldenboy Ann, from Henry & Mark Cornthwaite, Garstang. This big strong 2nd calved cow, bred from four generations of EX cows and sold giving 36.4litres, realised £1800 selling to the judge. The reserve champion rosette was awarded to Lot 4, the first place Halter led heifer, from J Burrow & Son, Tunsteads. Sired by Stardale Vast, who also sired the champion of the July sale at Lancaster, yielding 36litres and just over a month calved, she later went onto realise £1800, again, selling to the judge. Top price of the day came from W & C Gorst & Son, Hole of Ellel, Saltoke Jeeves Rebecca 157, giving 31litres and from one of the top cow families of the Saltoke Herd, this smart lasting heifer realised £1900. As well as the pedigree Holsteins, a pair of Montbelliarde second calvers from GA Haston & Son, realised £1050 & £1020. The best pair of heifers was awarded to J Burrow & Son, with Lots 3 & 4, winning the Cornthwaite Cup, these realised £1720 & £1800 respectively. All heifers sold to full value, with an overall average of £1587.50 for heifers and £1590 for cows.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 14th August The good trade for Store Cattle continues at Lancaster with a good quality entry of cattle forward. The trade topped at £1,510 for a 28 month old Limousin steer from David Moorhouse of Natland. A couple of smart Limousin steers sold to £1,490 from MS Dugdale & Son. An impressive 19 steers sold in excess of £1,300 with plenty of short keep cattle easily selling in excess of £1,200 as all steers forward sold to an average of £1,043. Angus heifers sold to a top of £1,220 from M & E Forshaw & Son of Little Town. Vendors are advised to continue forwarding cattle to Lancaster as buyers are looking for all types of cattle from rearing cattle to cattle nearly finished. A better quality entry of OTM Cattle and cast cows forward met a stronger trade then previous week. Meaty cows noticeably a better trade selling ten pence per kilogram better than the previous week. Beef type cows sold to a top of 141.5ppk with a Simmental from MA & JA Winn of High Underbarrow Farm. Plenty of beef cows sold 130ppk plus, as better dairy cows sold into the late 120’s pence per kilogram. Dairy cows sold to an average of 99ppk with an overall sale average of 104ppk.

A busy morning in the Calf ring this morning, with 71 passing through the ring. All calves sold to full value, topping trade in the calves was regular vendor David and Eileen Wallbank, with a smart Blue Bull realising £500 at only 42days. Blue heifers sold to £380 from J, CH & JG Bland, Arnside Tower. A nice run of Angus from JH Towers & Son, Tunstall saw Bulls sell to £385 and heifers to £360. Friesians sold to £152 again from David and Eileen Wallbank. Best calves over £100 with nice rearing sorts £70-£90, younger plainer calves £40-£55. Stirks sold to a top of £625 for a 4month Charollais. Blue heifers sold to £615 from Phil Wood, Scotforth, Blue bulls to £600 from the same good home. A run of Angus’ Bulls at 4months from TE & MM Kidd sold to £540.

Monday 17th August The weekly sale of Prime Lambs at Lancaster had just over one thousand lambs forward. Buyers very cautious of buying lambs lacking finish and vendors are strongly urged to ensure that lambs are well fleshed for sale. Lambs lacking finish and a lot of heavy lambs in the market lead to an overall average of 145ppk. Heavy weight lamb sold to £78.50 from James Burr of Quermore. Majority of pen of lambs selling between £19 and £21 above weight with better sorts selling £25 plus above there weights.

Masham ewes sold to £81 from K Whitaker & Son of Stirzakers Farm with Texel ewes from the same home selling to £86. Swaledale ewes sold to £57 from WI & A Atkinson of Holme House.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 13th August Even with the good weather, there was still a good entry of 51 Stirks and Calves forward. Young beef calves a very strong trade with buyers for the bigger beef calves cautious of going over the £400 barrier. Four British Blue bull calves sold to £390 with plenty selling £370 plus. One month old Limousin bull calves from Mesrs Robinson of Strickley sold to £370. Black and White calves sold to a top of £175 from CG Birkett of Carnforth as better rearers sold between £130 and £160 and young rearers £90 plus with young Holstein types £30 to £50.

The weekly sale of Store Lambs saw a top price of £61 for a Texel x from L Vickers who sold others at £60. Medium keep lambs saw a rise on price generally £50 - £54, longer keep lambs £47 - 49 with hill lambs £40 - £47. Buyers requiring all types of lambs at this weekly sale and keen to attend with orders to fill.

Tuesday 18th August Prime Lambs sell to £72 & 171p/kg The weekly sale of Prime Lambs saw an entry of 1861 forward selling to an overall market average of 140p/kg, which contained lambs ranging from 34kg – 57kg. The market was topped by heavy Suffolk lambs from D M & D Cook selling at £72. Heavy lambs scaling 46kg and over achieving £62-£68, with standards generally £14 - £18 over the weight, providing they were finished. Buyers showing extreme caution to under-finished lambs, regardless of weight. These were much harder to place and perhaps would be better sold on a Thursday as stores. Best export lambs sold to 171p/kg for Beltex x lambs from Fishwick Farms, with well finished lambs 148p/kg-165p/kg. Farm assurance is certainly worth considering to ensure that lambs sell to value.

The weekly sale of Cast Sheep had a bumper entry of 800 forward. Texel ewes sold to a top of £118 from Messrs Ladds of Benson Hall. Strong Continental ewes were selling easily £90 plus, with lesser ewes selling in excess of £75. Mule ewes sold to £73 from J & R Waller of Hallbeck, with pens of bigger Mule ewes selling into the late sixties. Hill bred ewes saw Cheviots to £68, Swales to £51. Plain and grazing ewes were in strong demand today and good to sell.
