Whiteley Hey Production Sale 17th August 2020 Mitchells Auction Mart and North West Auctions J36 conducted on Monday 17th August 2020 the 19th Annual Whiteley Hey Production sale of top-quality breeding females and stock rams on behalf of Mr Paul Slater. With attention to detail in Pauls breeding program and the addition of “Garngour Awesome” in 2018 to his flock we witnessed the first of “Garngour Awesome’s” shearling rams coming under the hammer. Well there is a pun in there somewhere “Garngour Awesome” stock were “Awesome”. The females were again expertly matched up for type and style, and showing all the quality that just gets everyone excited. Leading the ladies were a pair of Gimmer Shearlings sired by Garngour Awesome which made £650 selling to M/s Wilson, Northern Ireland. Bidding remained strong and competitive with a further 3 pens of Beltex x Texel Gimmer Shearlings making £600 each with one pair being Black Beltex x Texel. Once the females were sold the atmosphere then was ramped up with the anticipation of prices on the first pen of rams. These all being sired by “Garngour Awesome”. This pen of rams sold to 3800gns, 3400gns and the full pen of 9 averaged 2010gns with the rams ending up in 9 different counties. Bidding was fast and furious throughout the whole sale of rams with customers in awe of the quality of rams on show again. The sales leading price was mid-way through for lot 85, which was a Garngour Awesome sired pure Texel. He was knocked down for 5500gns and joining Harry Wood of Popes Farm, Preston flock. The proceeds of this ram was donated to East Cheshire Hospice, Macclesfield. A total clearance of all stock produced some outstanding averages. Lancaster Sale Reports Weekly Sale of Store Cattle, Cast Cows & Calves Friday 14th August 2020 A bumper entry of 308 strong Store Cattle forward today at NWA Lancaster, with the sale being topped at £1430. There was a total clearance prices over and beyond the vendors expectations, all classes to suit a ringside of regular buyers. The fast and competitive pace saw a consignment of 2 Limousin bullocks, from CP & VM Cowgill, Bentham make £1430, closely followed by another entry of Angus bullocks from J Hesketh, Hutton to £1410. Younger Black and white stores achieved £780 for a consignment from SH & PI Bowes, Stainton, with younger Charolais breed to £1000 from A & V & A Thornton, Cockerham. A larger entry of quality store continental store bullocks from S & JE Cornthwaite, Brookhouse we saw to £1380.

We have done it again…another week with over 100 Cows sold meeting a very impressive market average of 137p/kg with well over 60% of the cows forward dairy cows. Young British blue cows lead the way from ST Birkett and Son, Carnforth selling to 207.5p/kg or £1265, who also sold good Limousin cows to 184.5p/kg or £1125. Angus cows today topped at £1233 from EW & A Bradshaw, Stalmine or 1184.5p/kg T Foley, Bolton. Top of the tree today in the dairy bred cows was a thumping Friesian cow weighing in at 863kg gross £1254 from WG Cornthwaite, Claughton-on-Brock. Friesians topped at 154.5p/kg from MJ Fell, Carnforth, with others at 149.5p/kg AT Burrow, Gressingham. Dairy bred cows averaged 124.5p/kg a planer show of cows from previous weeks. More cows required week in week out to satisfy our buyers demand Just a few more OTM heifers in today, topping the trade was AT Burrow, Gressingham grossing £1125 with other from J Burrow & son, Preston at £1017, OTM Steers are always good to sell in the bottom ring topping at £1224 for British Blues from R Baguley, Blackpool. Just a handful of cast bulls today saw Limousin to 199.5p/kg or £1197 from TA Chapman & Son, Kendal, with Friesians at £936 from W G Farms, Cockerham.

What a great selection of Calves and weanlings at Lancaster today, with something to suit all and a good number of 87 forward meeting a buoyant trade. Leading the way this week was weanling Limousin steers from B & MJ Nelson, Milnthorpe twice selling to £555. British Blue bull calves from J & G Thornley, Roseacre sold to £485 with Angus bulls from the same home selling to £440. Herefords sold to £425 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. A large number of Charolais calves in the market today met plenty of demand with Bull calves selling to £375 from TM Townley, Over Wyresdale and heifer calves selling to £360 from WG Farms, Cockerham with others selling at £340 plus. Simmental bull calves sold to a top of £350 from JR Newsham and Son, Conder Green. Angus bull calves sold to £340 and £330 from TM Townley, Over Wyresdale. Plenty of beef calves selling over the £300 mark with young 2-3week old beef calves selling between £200 and £250.

Saturday 15th August Tractors sell to £6000 at Farm Dispersal Sale. North West Auctions conducted the dispersal sale on behalf of the late Harvey Gardner of Moss Cottage, Pilling on Saturday 15th August 2020. All items sold to keen interest with the trio of tractors attracting many admirers. The sale topped at £6000 for a MF135 in original condition with a Ford 4610 complete with loader sell to £4600 and a Fordson Super Dexta complete with loader sell to £2900. Other items of interest included a NH370 Conventional baler selling at £1400, a 2-wheel tipping trailer to £980, a 6ft Rotovator to £900, Vicon 2 drum mower to £750 and a hydraulic log splitter £560. Livestock equipment saw 15ft cattle feed barriers sell at £170 each, 15ft yard gates £110 each, sheep turn over crate £420, cattle feed troughs to £100. Vintage items sold to £110 for a horse drawn plough, £50 turnip drill, glazed poultry feeder £45, potato scales £45, vintage weights £40. Serval included items by permission saw a Ford 3000 sell at £2000, Ifor Williams 12ft flatbed trailer £2050, welger RP220 baler £3700. Lancaster Sale Reports Monday 17thAugust The weekly sale of 680 Spring Lambs sold to an average of 203p/kg. Well-meated lambs were selling to a big premium today with buyers very cautious of underfed lambs with these being better suited in the store ring. JM & MH France & Son, Littledale sold a pen of Texel lambs to £110. Heavy weight Texel lambs from E Lund & Son, Ingleton sold to £103 with many heavy Continental lambs selling £90 plus. A run of Beltex lambs from A & E Clarkson, Thurnham sold to £98 or 245p/kg. All well-fed Beltex lambs were selling 230p/kg plus. Suffolk lambs peaked at £92 from DJ Casson & Son, Slyne. There was a bigger show of Mule lambs forward today that sold to £88 from PD Pye, Over Wyresdale with a big from B & SE Carter, Ellel to £82.

Horned sheep this week saw Swaledales sell to £68 from G & K Richmond, Inglewhite with J Smith, Brookhouse selling to £60.

The fortnightly sale of saw an increased in number of 230 through the ring. Topping the trade today was F & E Harrison, Wray with smart Texel lambs making £82.50. This was closely followed by G & D Ball, Great Eccleston selling to £80. A large show of Mule lambs today saw the trade topping at £67 from PD Pye, Over Wyresdale with others from AC & K Pye, Abbeystead selling to £63. Cheviot tup lambs from KM & KJ Curwen, Abbeystead made up to £53.50 for long keep lambs. Lonk lambs from Messrs Hey & Sons, Quernmore made £46 for late born lambs. More lambs are required for our next sale on Monday 31st August with vendors advised to take advantage of the strong trade.

Tuesday 18th August NWA Lancaster held its monthly sale of dairy cattle on Tuesday 18th August 2020, which saw a high-quality catalogued entry attracting buyers from Lancashire, Yorkshire, Cumbria and Cheshire all keen to purchase stock from this popular sale. All vendors must be complimented on the quality of their stock presented today with more needed at each sale to satisfy buyers demand. Today NWA were pleased to be able to reintroduce the pre-sale show which saw 15 cattle competing in the 2 show classes. The show was kindly and ably judged by JA Greenhalgh, Elswick for which we thank him for his time and expertise. The Championship rosette was awarded to Tomlinson Bilsrow Ltd, Bilsborrow showing ‘Bilsrow Charley Christina’ being 4 weeks calved and giving 33ltrs. The Reserve Champion rosette was won by GH Sanderson & Family, Kirkham showing ‘Sandley Present 171’ having calved 3 weeks ago giving 29ltrs. The cow class was won by JE & J Pye, Quernmore showing ‘Quernmore Doreeen 258’ producing 37ltrs, 3 weeks into her 2nd lactation. Today’s sale saw a top price of £2450 achieved by the champion ‘Bilsrow Charley Christina’ being bred from 4 generations of VG excellent and giving a currant lactation of 33ltrs from ‘Tomlinson Bilsrow Ltd’ selling to a north Lancashire customer. ‘Bilsrow Applejax Lausine 4’ made up the second part of the prize-winning pair from Tomlinsin Bilsrow Ltd selling to a returning Cheshire buyer at £2350. A trio of heifers from the Denhamhill herd of EH & R Eccles, Chorley saw ‘Denhanhill District Duchess Red’, bred from a VG88 dam, achieved a final bid of £2280 from RE & P Miller, Barnacre. ‘Denhamhill Marley Kitty 2’, bred from an EX92 dam, sold at £2150 and ‘Denhamhill District Peggy Red’ sold at £2000. Messrs Drinkall Bros, Abbystead achieved £2180 for ‘Pennine Snowdrift 99’, with ‘Pennine Moonbeam 55’ selling at £2000 and ‘Pennine Poppy 1503’ selling at £1900. The Reserve Champion ‘Sandley Present 171’ from GH Sanderson & Family, Kirkham sold at £2100. Top priced cow was today the first prize cow ‘Quernmore Doreen 258’ from JE & J Pye, Quernmore which sold to a Cheshire buyer for £2000. J36 Sale Reports Thursday 13th August What a great day with this Store Lamb sale continuing to grow from strength to strength as twice as many lambs sold as the same sale last year. There was an increased entry of 3494 Store Lambs at J36 that sold to a strong trade selling to an overall average of £71.75. Well over a third of the lambs forward where upland lambs. There was a full range of store lambs forward with something to suit all buyers’ requirements from short term to long term lambs. Once again a good backing of local and travelled buyers with many returning and new customers ringside. A great consignment of Beltex gimmer lambs lead the way from JG & PH Thompson, Selside selling a pen of 10 Beltex lambs to £132 with others from the same home selling to £120. The consignment of Texel gimmer lambs from RA Batty, Selside sold to £121, £112 and £106 with other Texel gimmer lambs to £116. Beltex lambs sold to £94 from J Potter, Orton. There was plenty of pens of best quality lambs selling around the £90 mark as well as well fleshed short keep lambs with plenty more pens of strong continental and Suffolk lambs in the eighties. Upland lambs sold to a top of £87 for Rough Fell Mules from TLB & J Knowles, Selside with North Country mules selling to £81 from Fishwick Bros, Longsleddale. Cheviot lambs topped at £82 from JR Handley, Whinfell. Tuesday 18th August The weekly sale of Prime Lambs had 1486 forward selling to an overall average of 198p/kg. Lambs that were mostly in demand today were heavy weight, better conformation and well-fleshed. Leading the way this week at £121 was 53kg Texel lambs from E Dodgson, Kendal. This was followed by Charollais lambs at £118 from S & A Gardner, Far Arnside. Continental lambs peaked at £115 from G Wightman, Grange over Sands with Suffolk lambs peaking at £113 from S Coward, Alithwaite. Plenty more pens of heavy weight lambs sold in the region of £110. Better bred lambs sold in excess of 220p/kg, peaking this week at 242p/kg from R & J Dodgson, Natland purchased by Plumgarths Farm Shop. There was a larger quantity of upland lambs on the market today with Mule lambs selling to a top of £96 from R & E Ladds, Kendal with other pens from the same home selling to £92. Horned lambs today with Rough Fells selling to £77 from E Dodgson.

There was an increased entry of cast ewes of 863 forward selling to a very similar trade to the previous week. Leading the way this week selling to £127 was Texels from RR & JA Knowles, Docker. This was closely followed by the consignment from Helen Newton, Low Levens selling Suffolks to £125 and Texels to £123. This week saw plenty of pens of good quality ewes selling in excess of £100 mark. Cheviot Mule ewes this week peaked at £98 from JC Dunning, Orton with Mule ewes peaking at £95 from Dave Dixon, Grayrigg. There was plenty of pens of strong mule ewes selling in the early eighties. There was a large entry of horned ewes forward today that saw Swaledales sell to a top of £63 from WM & JE Shuttleworth, Barbon. Rough Fell ewes sold to £62 from E & K Bland, Tebay. Plenty of pens of strong horned ewes easily sold in the fifties. Leaner types of horned ewes continued to meet plenty of demand with feeding men in the market looking for all types.
