J36 Show & Sale of Ewes & Shearlings with Lambs Tuesday 18th April The annual show and sale of Ewes and Gimmer Shearlings with lambs at foot was held on Tuesday 18th April 2017 at J36. The pre-sale show saw a smart line up of sheep forward in front of judge, Mr Frank Joel of Westhouse. The champion rosette was awarded to G & KM Atkinson of Green Farm with a pen of five Mule one crop ewes with Texel twin lambs. A pen of five Mule shearlings with Texel twin lambs from the same good home was awarded the reserve champion rosette as well.

There was a good buzz around the ring with just shy of 500 lives being sold. The champion pen sold to £210 with the reserve champion Mule Shearlings selling to £210, all from G & KM Atkinson. The trade topped at £215 for a Texel x shearling suckling triplet lambs from JA Chapman of North Farm. Pens of strong shearlings with strong lambs sold in the region of £200 per family. Older Mule ewes with twins sold to £180 from I & P Brown of Oak House with broken mouthed Cheviot Mules with twins selling to £178 from Messrs Jackson of Reagill Grange. Broken mouthed Mule ewes from the same home sold to £172. Continental sheep with single Texel lambs sold to £135.

NWA Architectural LAKE DISTRICT NATIONAL PARK CALL FOR DEVELOPMENT SITES The Lake District National Park Authority are reviewing their development land allocations maps and are requesting landowners get in touch with areas of land for consideration for housing or commercial or industrial development. Any land use can be put forward, camping barns, camping pods, houses, etc. This is part of a regular review of land use that planning authorities are legally obliged to undertake. The process is quite straightforward and requires landowners to notify the authority of available land, the extent of that land, likely or suggested uses and other details.

We can prepare the required information for you for any area of land within the National Park however large or small. Land could be for a single house or a whole estate. It could be for a small office building, series of garages for lock-up stores or an industrial estate.

You really have nothing to lose but no time to wait. This process closes on 2nd June this year so it is a very short opportunity to investigate and submit an area of land for allocation for development.

This is not a planning application it is a proposal by landowners for the planning authority to consider development land in their area.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 14th April There was a good entry of over 225 Store Cattle forward with all sizes and ages in strong demand and eagerly bid for by a busy ring of buyers and onlookers. Short term well fleshed cattle were, once again, a good trade with British Blue Bullocks selling to £1340 from M Shepherd & Sons of Pilling who also sold British Blue Heifers to £1300. CD & HL Mason of Caton sold British Blue Bullocks to £1330 with British Blue Heifers from the same home topping the market at £1310.

Once again, Native bred cattle were good to sell at Lancaster with a pen of 4 Aberdeen Angus Bullocks from J & R Waller of Killington selling to £1290. Stabiliser Bullocks topped at £1290 from JA & R Geldard & Son of Levens.

Young Grazing cattle were in strong demand today with more required to fulfil buyer’s requirements.

There was a reduced entry of Cast Cows this week due to the Bank holiday weekend, but the trade continued to be a very strong at Lancaster with OTM Cattle worth more through the ring than deadweight.

An overall market average of 133p/kg was achieved with OTM Limousin Heifers selling to 209.5p/kg from JG & PH Thompson of Selside with Cast Cows from the same good home selling 169.5p/kg or £1150.

Friesian cows sold to a top of £1020 from DJ Clarke of Barnacre with plenty of dairy cows selling over 130p/kg.

The weekly sale of Calves had a reduced number forward this week due to the Easter bank holiday.

There continues to be plenty of interest in all specifications of calves with British Blue Bulls selling to £380 twice from MJ Fell of Whittington with British Blue heifer calves from the same home selling to £345 and £320.

Monday 17th April The Spring Show and Sale of Ewes and Shearlings with Lambs at foot had a good show of sheep forward and was kindly and expertly judged by Andrew Butler of Hambleton. The Championship Rosette was awarded to James Burr of Quernmore with a Pen of 5 Continental Ewes with Texel Twin Lambs with Reserve Champion Rosette awarded to Myerscough College for a pen of 5 Suffolk Shearlings with Beltex Twin Lambs.

A packed ringside saw a buoyant trade throughout with the trade topping at £200 for the Champion pen from James Burr, who also sold Continental Ewes with Twins to £185.Suffolk Shearlings with Beltex Twins sold to £185 from Myerscough College and Mule Ewes with Texel Twins topped at £175, again, from James Burr.

A mixed single trade saw Strong Ewes with strong single lambs topping at £132 with an overall market average of £55 a life achieved.

There was a smaller entry of Spring Lambs forward this morning all of which were Charollais out of Mules from PW & DW Roskell of Pilling selling to a market average of 231p/kg with the trade topping at £99.

A smaller entry of Prime Hoggs forward today with vendors cautious of the Bank Holiday, but a strong trade was enjoyed throughout. A slightly mixed entry as the end of the Hogg season approaches saw Hoggs sell to £92 and £90 from RS & IM Kellet of Cockerham.

A run of well fleshed Hoggs from Cardwell Farms sold to 199p/kg with pens from the same home regularly in the mid £80. Mule Hoggs sold to a top of £82 from A & J Rhodes of Ellel. An overall market average of 174p/kg was achieved.

Lancaster Sale Reports A similar number of Cast Sheep forward this week saw a consignment of Texel Tups from MJ & K Ayrton of Thurnham sell to a top of £153 and average well over £100. The trade was very similar to last week with lean ewes in very strong demand.

The ewe trade topped at £88 for Texel Ewes from CA & J Alty & Son of Warton with Mule ewes from the same home selling to £77. All Cast Ewes forward averaging in the mid-sixties.

Dairy Sale Monday 17th April The April Monthly Sale of Dairy Cattle had a catalogue entry of 28 with the pre-sale show judged by Thomas Ayrton of Thurnham, who we thank for his time and expertise. Winning the Championship Rosette today was the Inman Family of Strickland Hill with Witherslack Topsy Rose which later sold for £1500.

A mixed trade was endured due to the uncertainty of the milk price and a lot of foreign Heifers coming on the market at the moment for little money. The trade was topped by J & M Sanderson of Wesham selling to £1850 with Heifers from the same good home selling to £1780 and £1700.

Dairy Cows sold to a top of £1700 from J & M Sanderson of Wesham.

Heifers sold to a market average of £1568 with cows averaging £1533.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 13th April There was an entry of 40 Calves and stirks today with a variety of all types of claves forward. A good show of beef calves forward this morning saw British Blue calves sell to a top of £400 from JM & TE Sharp, Flodder hall with British Blue heifers selling to £305 from H J Robinson & Son, Elm Tree farm.

A young entry of black and whites were keenly bid for topping at £95 from H J Robinson & Son. A run of Hereford stirks from FP & G Slater, Bellart Howe topped at £750 for a bullock.

A strong trade was seen in the Cast Cow ring today with 35 going under the hammer. A superb British Blue Cow sold to a told of 179p/kg or £1220 from J Walling & Son of Mislet farm with Limousin cows selling to 177.5p/kg from G M Redmayne, Gowan Bank. Black and white cows sold to a top of 119.5p/kg or £900 from W Garnett, Ackenthwaite and a run of Fleckvieh x cows from JJ & MA Park & son topped at 131p/kg or £1058. An overall market average of 121p/kg was achieved.

Coming up at North West Auctions

There was a sharp trade from start to finish with just short of 100 Store Cattle going under the hammer. Trade topped at £1030 for a pen full of 16 month old Limousin bulling heifers from R & A Galbraith, Carter House with bullocks from the same home to £1000. A great trade was seen for younger cattle today with many purchasers now looking to grass day and requiring grazing cattle.

A larger entry of Spring Lambs forward this week sold to the continued strong trade and all were eagerly bid for. Beltex type spring lambs sold in excess of 250p/kg topping at 277p/kg or £111 from AE Atkinson of Stubb Farm with Beltex lambs and Dorset lambs sold to a top of £109 from S Procter of Selside. Spring lambs sold to a market average of 231p/kg.

There was a very mixed entry of Prime Hoggs as seen over the previous weeks.

Well fleshed hoggs were very easily sold and in strong demand with other hoggs selling to their value. Beltex type hoggs, once again, selling around the two hundred pence per kilo mark with the trade topping at 225p/kg from Andrew Butler of Hambleton. The trade topped at £101 a head from AR & C Fawcett of Gosforth.

Cast Sheep today saw a sharper trade for all types of ewes forward, especially leaner and hill type ewes. A fresh buyer around the ring saw the trade top at £124 for a pen of three Texel Ewes from AR & CA Fawcett of Silverhow Farm, Texel Ewes from the same good home sold to £110 and £103. RJ & YL Willison, Cinderbarrow Farm sold a Bluefaced Leicester Ewe in aid of North West Air Ambulance selling for £112, this was closely followed by RI Dixon selling Leicesters to £102.
