SHOW AND SALE OF NORTH OF ENGLAND MULES, MASHAM, CHEVIOT MULE, ROUGH FELL MULE, SUFFOLK AND CONTINENTAL GIMMER LAMBS
This much anticipated sale once again drew national interest with new customers in attendance and keen to return in future. A buoyant trade was seen for all breeds of gimmer lambs for which vendors must be complemented on the quality of stock presented.
The pre-sale judging this year saw the Continentals presented before Mr S Lofthouse, Grewelthorpe and the Mules, Mr W Gardner, Brookhouse.
From all the show classes the overall championship rosette was awarded to R Lawrence, Field Broughton showing a pen of Mule Gimmer lambs which later achieved a market topping price of £270.
North Country Mules
Buyers were keen to secure replacement stock with a top price of £270 for the show champions from R Lawrence. Other stronger lambs were £155 - £180, Mediums £135 - £150 and running lambs £105 - £125. All sold to an average of £130.
Cheviot Mules
P Knowles topped the sale achieving £220 for the 1st prize pen with others £155 - £170 and a sale average of £152.
Rough Fell Mules
A top price of £180 was achieved on two occasions from B & J Knowles and FB Dunning with stronger lambs £140 - £165 and the next draw down £110 - £130, averaging £139. Mashams sold to £125 from BJ Bainbridge.
Today’s sale saw a special section for Continental gimmer lambs which saw a top price of £210 achieved for a pen of pure Texels from R & E Ladds with other pure and ¾ bred pens £170 - £190 and first cross £145 - £175. Su olk x sold to £165 from TA & JA Dixon.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: NEMSA Gimmer Lambs. Saturday 13th September 2025.
The much-anticipated Annual Show and Sale of mule gimmer lambs on behalf of the Kendal NEMSA branch was once again a success with buyers in attendance from all corners of the country keen to secure lambs of all classes and types.
A buoyant trade was seen throughout the sale with strong tupping lambs sell above last years prices, nice type runners and small tuppers were easily sold with only the smallest lesser quality lambs in line with last year’s prices.
Friday night saw 400 top quality lambs out for the prestigious show which were put before this year’s judges Richard Haynes and James Towler who we must thank for their time and expertise.
The annual ‘Stars in your eyes’ show of individual mule lambs was kindly judged by Duncan Burton who we also thank for making the trip north. These sold to a top of £550 from Messrs Hodgson, High Borrans with a lamb from AC & K Pye, Dunkenshaw kindly selling for charity at £500 and £450 whilst the champion from AJ & RE Marston, Easgill Head sold for £400.
Saturday sale saw a top price of £500 for the first prize pen of 10 from Bob Lawrence, Greaves Farm who also sold another pen of 10 at £300. Congratulations must go to Bob and Emma on being awarded the Bruce Willison Memorial Shield for the best run of lambs which this year was kindly judged by Ian Lancaster.
Next at £320 was a much-admired pen from RI Dixon, Low Newton with pens at £300 from D Sharp, Flodder Hall and P & A Fell, Castle Hill. Numerous pens hit £270 from T Ayrton & Son, Yates Farm, TA & JA Dixon, Yoad Pot, RH & C Ayrton, Ouzelthorn and twice from Messrs Hodgson, High Borrans and Rydal Farm.
Many running lambs in the o ering resulted in a sale average of £154.77 which was an increase of £3 on the year for 600 more sold. Thanks must go to all sale sponsors, vendors and buyers for once again making this a great sale.

Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Prime Lambs & Cast Sheep. Monday 15th September 2025.
PRIME LAMBS
A rise in numbers and price saw an overall market average of 305p/kg, for lambs rising from 32kg to 58kg. Several consigners are now presenting inside fed lambs, with buyers showing preference today to well finished lambs of all weights and breeds. Today’s sale peaked at £166 with other better end lambs £155 to £161, with well finished grass fed lambs £140 to £148 and those lacking the final finished £132 to £140. Well bred lambs sold to 353p/kg, with other pens regularly 325p/kg to 340p/kg, the best standard weights were 308p/kg to 320p/kg, again with those slightly under finished lambs 280p/kg to 300p/kg. Vendors are encouraged to feed lambs to achieve maximum returns.

With the break in standstills vendors are now o -loading older ewes in greater numbers, with Lancaster’s Monday morning sale once again proving a competition auction environment, with all sold today averaging £129, with a larger proportion of today’s sale being hill bred ewes. Strongest cross bred ewes sold to £182, with other better end £165 to £180, mediums £145 to £158 and feeding types £118 to £133. Mules sold to £166, with mediums generally £135 to £150, feeding types £105 to £120 and hard worked sorts less. Pure hill ewes sold to £124 for Lonks, £120 Cheviots, with the best of the medium Swaledale’s £88. A handful of cull rams forward saw medium continental to £195, with others £170 to £185.

Several new vendors attending the weekly store lamb sale, which saw long keep Texel cross to £102, with others £90 to £95. Anticipated entry of 100 to 150 next week.

PRIME LAMBS
The trend continues – more lambs and more trade at Junction 36. Come and see for yourself, as numbers continue to surpass previous years and confidence round the ring shows no sign of slowing. Lambs topped today at £196 from Wishingwell. Dutch Spotted lambs reached £192 from AP Metcalfe. PJ&ES Rogerson sold a tremendous run of lambs topping at 344p/kg twice over, for a pen of nine at 49kgs and a pen of eight at the same weight totalling at £169, a very pleasing price for Will indeed. Beltex from WS Burrow Ltd topped at 344.7p/kg for a pen of six slightly lighter lambs. KA Purtill topped at 341.5p/kg for a pen of five Texels.
An overall average of 313p/kg was achieved today with an eager ringside hungry for more, featuring a couple of fresh faces again today. Same time, same place next week, call Joel McGarva on 07920009097.

Lancaster Auction Mart: Second Sale of Breeding Ewes, Shearlings & Rams followed by Annual Show & Sale of Gimmer Lambs. Wednesday 17th September 2025.
Today sale commenced with breeding rams which saw Texel sell to £580 from RT&ME Sutton, Kendal. Ewes and shearlings sold to a top price of £280 for Pure Texel shearlings, with others £250 again from RT&ME Sutton. R Lambert sold Cheviot Mule shearlings at £230, with North of England Mules to £245 from T Sharp, with others £225 from R Falshaw & Sons. Older ewes sold to £190 for Texel cross 1-3 crop from K Purtill, with others £180 and £175.
Lancasters annual show and sale of Mule gimmer lambs once again attracted a fantastic entry of 1030 local lambs from the Lancashire fells, with credit going to all vendors for a marvellous show. 34 active buying accounts ensured all types of sheep were bid for, with a sale average of £158.70 achieved.
The pre sale show was kindly judged by David Preston, Caton and Robert Falshaw, Gisburn who we thank for their time and expertise this morning. The sale peaked at £250 for the first prize pen of ten from Drinkall Bros with other pens of ten to £220 from W&A Cornall and WI&AM Atkinson.
£200 was achieved for ten from B&SE Carter and for the first prize pen of twenty from W&A Cornall. The strongest lambs were regularly the top side of £165, with running lambs slightly harder to place, as seen at most centres.
The next sale of all classes of breeding sheep, plus store lambs will be the renowned Hill Fair Day on Saturday 4th October, catalogue entries for this sale close on Friday 26th September.

J36 once again proves the place for calves with 139 forward, with a straight trade seen for all.
Bull calves sold to £870 and £860 for British Blues from Bambers Farm, Thurnham with others at £850 x2 from CR Dickson, Thurnham. Charolais sold to £810 from Gibson & Berry, Endmoor with Limousin to £770 from AK&BM Robinson, Arkholme. Herefords from B Cooper, Barrow in Furness topped the natives at £710, with others at £690 from JS&IM Wilson, Millom. One month old British Blues sold to £710 from A Pickthall, New Hutton with others to £660 from first time vendors HA Sawrey & Son, Ulverston. Plenty of power around the stirk sale ring, with more needed each sale to satisfy buyer’s demand.
Steers sold to £1260 for yearling dairy cross from B Butterfield & Son, with others regularly £1100 to £1200. Yearling Galloways sold to £940 from CC Chinn. Recently weaned Aberdeen Angus cross five month old achieved £780 from Messrs Young. Heifers again generally ten to twelve months old sold to £1220 for British Blue cross and Limousin cross £1130. Younger heifers sold to £1100 for six month old British Blues cross from F&TE Park and £1090 from RE&P Miller. Younger recently weaned heifers were £700 to £880. Just a handful of bulls today sold to £1170 for seven month old reared British Blue cross from F&TE Park, with three month old Beef Shorthorns to £880 and £850 from J&E Lancaster.

The continued rain didn’t dampen the demand for cattle today. Larger numbers forward were faced with buyers both old and new resulting in a weatherproof trade from the outset. A smashing big pair of Luing steers received a downpour of bids totalling at £2650. Limousin bullocks topped at £2380 from Messrs TA Chapman for an outstanding run of cattle. The same good home had another at £2360 and a further 4 over £2300. If the rain was relentless, so too was the demand for quality. British Blue bullocks also sold to £2300 from Messrs MA & JA Winn at 16 months old.
Heifers also received floods of interest topping at £2380 for a British Blue from M & D Hatton. Limousin heifers hit £2200 for yet more quality this time from Messrs FW Park aged 16 months old. Aberdeen Angus heifers topped at £2100 from Messrs Wightman and Charolais heifers hit £2000 from J Twigge.

With the weather changing, cows are coming forward in larger numbers. All culls sold today averaged 258p/kg and £1695.
Best beef cows sold to 329p/kg for a Limousin cross from MW&M Hodgson, with other well fleshed and heavy beef cows 280p/kg to 310p/kg, with top grossing being an Aberdeen Angus cross from Miss P Dixon achieving £2528.
Dairy cows sold to 304p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from Strickland Hill Farming, with mediums generally 245p/kg to 260p/kg. Top grossing being another Holstein Friesian totalling £2165. Several cull bulls at today’s sale selling to 274p/kg and £2484.
OTM steers sold to 324p/kg and £2472 and heifers to 329p/kg and £2293.

A good number of calves forward at Lancasters, with trade still very sharp for the time of year.
Bull calves sold to £1020 for a British Blue from G&ME Woodhouse, Ellel who sold others at £840. Also at £840 was a six week old British Blue from AD&R Milner, Brock with JP&C Robson, Brock also making the worthwhile trip selling British Blue to £790 and £780 at six weeks sold. Natives sold to £810 from JS Towers & H Kent, Dolphinholme with Herefords to £760 from WN&D Smith, Cockerham. Black and Whites reached £360 from G&ME Woodhouse, Ellel. Heifer calves sold to £800 for a Limousin from JS Towers & H Kent, with this good home claiming next top price at £710 for Aberdeen Angus. A very sweet one month old Charolais from AD&RL Miler, Brock sold to £680, with British Blue from The Robson’s, Brock at £650. Two week old British Blue from T&CM Kelsall, Chipping reached £410 with all younger rearers looking well sold.p

Store cattle continues to be a pleasing trade at Lancaster’s weekly Friday sale, despite a slight ease in the prime cattle market seen nationally.
Bullocks still achieving big returns topping at £2480 for two Charolais from DJ&MC Platts, Caton, with £2420 paid for three British Blues from JD&GM Bracken, Catterall. Aberdeen Angus bullocks sold to £2400 for three from JS Clark & Son, Catforth with Simmental to £2380 from EW&CR Clegg & Son, Stalmine. Four MRI bullocks sold to £2220 from Barlow Bros, Preston with Black and Whites to £2120 from GR Park & Son, Whinfell. Bullocks sold over £2100 seventythree times and averaged £2031.23, which is £602 up on the same sale last year. Heifers looked well sold topping at £2300 for a British Blue from JW&DL Park, Ellel and for Limousin from JM&JJ Dawson, Littledale. RG&B Lewis, Middleton sold four Aberdeen Angus to £2280, with two British Blues from AT Burrow & Son, achieving the same. Forty seven heifers sold over £2000 and averaged £1911.40 up £645, on the same sale last year.

OTM CATTLE
Lancasters weekly sale of OTM cattle saw a few more about, as the weather turns wetter and fields become a bit trashy, resulting in a very mixed show of cattle.
Top of the table today in the bottom ring was C&B Capstick, Kendal with their Hereford cast bull achieving £2867.48, with other cast bulls at £2711.78 also for a Hereford from J&S Winstanley, Preston. All cast bulls today averaged 290p/kg.
OTM cows saw a top price per head of £2346 or 274p/kg for a Friesian cow from M&S Blease, Carnforth, with other Friesian cow at £2261.78 or 284.5p/kg from L Parson & Sons, Levens. Plenty of other Friesian cows were around the 250p/kg to 270p/kg mark. Beef bred OTM cows saw M&L Preece, Kirkby Lonsdale achieve 334p/kg or £2234 for a Limousin, with other beef bred OTM cows from J&A Smales to £2076 or 294p/kg this time for a Simmental. All cows today averaged 243p/kg, with some very plain cows in the mix.
OTM heifers saw a decent trade with TJ Robinson, Milnthorpe seeing his run of cattle top at 359p/kg or £2225 for a Limousin. Other beef bred heifer sold to 349.5p/kg or £2152 for a British Blue from RC Billington & Son, Cloughton on Brock.
While dairy bred heifers topped at £2042 or 309p/kg from J Huddleston, Lancaster with other Friesian heifers from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale to 319.5p/g or £2012. All heifers today averaged 290p/kg, which again included some very plain sorts.
A handful of cast steers in the bottom ring today, with MJ Waller, Lupton to £2092 or 329.5p/kg for an Aberdeen Angus with other cast steers to 324p/kg also for an Aberdeen Angus from TJ Robinson, Milnthorpe.
More cattle are required for next Friday, to satisfy buyers demand.
