Lancaster Monthly Dairy Sale Monday 16th May The May sale had a bigger entry, however quality not the same as seen in the April sale. Judging of the pre-sale show was in the capable hands of John Okell of Chester , a nice line up of non-halter led heifers saw the first and second placed heifers taking the Champion and Reserve.

Taking the top price at £1550 was the Champion, Kirkwood Royce Isabel 3, with two immediate generations of EX & VG, she sold to Doug Wallbank of Longridge. A ringside of buyers were present, however all were on the cautious side, best heifers in excess of £1400. An overall average of £1205, a straight average when looking at the quality forward.

A couple of bulls forward from the Stardale herd of J Burrow & Son saw Lot 30, Stardale Adeen Miles, a nice bull sired by Melarry Robust Miles and with 4 generations of EX cows behind him, he sold for a final call of £1500.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 6th May A good show of Store Cattle in terms of numbers again in the store ring, with over 300 forward. A lack of big meaty cattle forward, with the best sorts selling to £1290 twice from Barlow Bros, with Simmentals. R & E Ladds, Scalthwaiterigg sold a trio of Angus Bullocks to £1240.

Heifers sold to £1160 for a nice British Blue from Craig, Hannah and Millie Mason, Caton. Nice quality grazing cattle sold to a strong trade, a good run of 13-15month Continentals from J & E Nuttall sold to a top of £850. Once again a full ringside of buyers bid competitively for all classes with stores needed every week to meet demand.

A good show in both numbers, with 91 OTM’s forward, and quality, a strong trade for all throughout. Topping the sale overall was a Friesian heifer from Wallbank Farms at 174.5ppk which also took top gross at pennies short of £1100. Beef cows to 147.5ppk for a Blonde from MJ Whitworth, Bolton le Sands. Friesian cows to 124.5ppk from EE Thornton & Sons, Heaton.

A nice entry of 41 Calves, made up of predominantly beef calves. British Blue heifers to £465 from Colin Birkett, Nether Kellet, other beef calves forward were younger but still sold to full value with Limousin Bulls from Alan and Sam Bargh at £300, Angus Bulls to £290 from Philip Halhead, Blue bulls to £255. Heifer calves to £250 for Simmentals from Eddy & Angie Newsham who had a good run to average £231.

Strongest Black and White calves to £205 from H Halhead & Son, with the best over £100 and nice rearers £65-£85, overall average of £94.

Monday 16th May The weekly sale of Spring Lambs had a larger entry of over 200 forward. Vendors leaving more satisfied with the trade today with more faces around the ring looking to purchase spring lambs. Plenty of pens of lambs selling in excess 200ppk.

A good number of Hoggs forward today for the time of year, heavy weight hoggs sold to a top of £95 from W & D Smith and Son of Cocker House with heavy hoggs selling around the ninety pound mark regularly. An overall market average of 162ppk with 39kg – 45kg hoggs averaging 172ppk. The trade very much dependent upon the finish and quality of the hoggs forward.

A strong trade for Cast Sheep today at Lancaster with a fresh buyer in the market looking to purchase ewes certainly helping the job. A market average of £90.24 for all ewes forward, more could have easily been sold and more needed over the next few weeks. A pen of Texel ewes from AJ Ellis of Sandy Hill Farm sold to £105, Mule ewes to £96 from WTC Farms of Hutton.

A smaller entry of Sheep with Lambs today following show week last week. Texel shearlings from George Hodkinson of Chipping with Charollais Beltex twins at foot selling to £188 with shearlings from the same home selling £125. A busy ring of buyers today in which more sheep could have easily been sold. A run of 22 Mule Hoggs entered already for next week.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 12th May A nice entry of Rearing Calves and Stirks sold to a very fast trade, with all vendors leaving well suited. British Blues dominated the top prices, with Bulls at 2m 13days from B Mallinson & Son, Levens, selling to £470. Others at 1m 20days from Bill Sharp, Flodder Hall at £460.

Three Blue Bulls over £400 and an average of £390. Native calves sold to £300 for Angus Bulls from Messers Wilson, Allithwaite and £285 for Angus Heifers from Messers Chadwick, St Michaels. Black and White calves sold well, topping at £102 at 4 weeks with strong rearing calves £70-£90. Younger, plainer calves £40-£60. A nice entry of stirks sold to £610 for a suckler bred Limousin heifer at 6 months from P W Clarke, Crosthwaite. Blue Bulls at 3month to £560, again from B Mallinson & Son, Levens.

Today we had 34 Cast Cows and Bulls forward. Cast cows averaged 102.3p/kg and were keenly bid for.

Top price was 139.5p/kg for a British Blue cow from F & J Mason, Mireside, a Limousin Cow from Forest Hall Farms and also for a Friesian cow from RL & J Crowe, Hall Farm.

In the Store Cattle ring 141 were forward, all kinds sold dearer than a fortnight ago, some kinds between £70-£100 dearer from the last sale.

Top price was £1210 for a 24 months old Limousin Bullock form J & ME Bateman, Lowgill Farm.

Tuesday 17th May A smaller entry of Breeding Sheep this week following on from the large entry last week for the annual hogg and lamb show, with plenty of families promised for next week’s sale. A buoyant trade for the stock forward today, with an extremely mixed entry in terms of quality. Once again a smart run of hoggs from G Atkinson & Son of Green Farm saw Mule Hoggs with lambs sell to £168 and Texel Hoggs from the same, good home selling to £145. Texel ewes with twin lambs from the Parker Family of Cragg Bank, sold to £165, with Suffolk Ewes with Texel twins from Jack Ainsworth of Carnforth, selling to £162. Once again, at J36, an active ring of buyers looking to purchase sheep.

An entry of just shy of 300 Spring Lambs forward, once again, at J36 Rural Auction Centre, saw trade in line with other centres nationwide.

Butcher quality lambs short in supply and could have easily seen more sell, with lambs selling between 230ppk and 250ppk, topping at 256ppk from DC D & JD Taylor of Garnett Folds. Majority of first cross lambs out of mules selling around 190ppk. A market average of 188ppk was achieved, with buyers cautious of lambs short of finish.

The weekly sale of Prime Hoggs had another good entry of just shy of 500 Prime Hoggs forward. Well fleshed hoggs very short in supply today and more could have easily been sold. Well fleshed hoggs regularly selling between 170ppk and 190ppk. A lot of hill hoggs in the market sold to a mixed trade, with flesh wanted and lean types very hard to place today.

Another big entry of Cast Sheep, with 415 forward, topping the trade was a Texel ewe at £113. Best ewes up and over £100, buyers cautious of over fat ewes. JN & DJ Bowes, Crook sold mules to £80, biggest sorts £74-£79. Overall, trade not quite as fast. However, good sheep, were well bid for.

All classes of pigs at the monthly sale this week, with 109 forward. Prime pig trade was a touch easier than seen in previous weeks, topping at £108 for a nice pair of gilts from JR Corlett, Cockermouth or 114ppk for a 79kg gilt from PK & R Woof, Stainton. Store and weaners pigs were the best trade of the day. Stores sold to £62 from Karl Sweeting, Ulverston and weaners to £68 from D & R Cornthwaite, Lockerbie.
