J36 Rural Auction Centre: Dairy Dispersal Sale on behalf of WB Winder & Co, followed by Collective Sale of Pedigree & Commercial Dairy Cattle, Monday 14th July 2025.

WB Winder & Co Dairy Dispersal Sale

North West Auctions held the dispersal sale of the milking portion of the herd of behalf of WB Winder & Co, Wall End Farm, Broughton in Furness which saw a large crowd of local and travelled buyers in attendance keen to secure additional and replacement stock. This all year-round herd sold to a top price of £2350 for a 2nd calver Holstein Friesian due December to sexed Holstein Friesian closely followed by a pair of heifers at £2200 and a fresh 3rd calved cow also at £2200. Other recently calved middle aged cows regularly £1800-£2100. Keen interest in cows soon to dry o and calve again at winter housing time sold to a top of £2050 with others regularly £1650-£1900. Several cross bred cows saw 5th lactation Jersey x sell at £1650 with other £1450-£1600. Overall herd average of £1680 was achieved. Collective Sale of Dairy Cattle

Following the dispersal from WB Winder, a further entry of 21 dairy cattle from 5 di erent vendors met a nice trade. This section topped at £3000 for the 31 litre Miltnthorpe Pharo Vall from W Garnett & Son, Ackenthwaite with this home selling Milnthorpe Flomont Madge 4 to £2850 and a 3rd calver Milnthorpe Flomont Rolinka at £2650. A nice consignment of cows from Barber Farms, Brock sold to £2350 for 3rd Calver High Hopes Zazzle Gail with 5th calver High Hopes Recoil Kirstie selling at £2200 from this same good home. British Friesians sold to £2150 from RH & RA Fawcett, Burton in Kendal.

Lambs cure the Monday blues: Flying trade from the first bell

Nothing gloomy about the start of the week as lambs met a red hot trade first thing Monday morning, with buyers keen from the outset. Prices soared across the board with well finished stock in strong demand and averages hitting an impressive 380p/kg. The buzz around the ring set the tone for a confident days selling as vendors saw returns well above expectations. Ten buyers ringside today.

A 45kg Beltex from D & K Swarbrick flew to 429ppk or 193 pounds per head. The same good home sold Texels to 420ppk and Charolais to 420ppk. Messrs T & S Blades sold a pair of Beltex at 42kgs to 424ppk. Heavies also up on the week! 4 Continentals from A & FM Bolland & Sons sold to 404ppk while 50kg Texels from O Gorst hit 396ppk or £198. Lighter lambs also a joy to sell. G Beresford sold a pen of 7 38kg Texels for 400ppk/£152. The same good home had a further 7 39kgs just 3ppk less at 397ppk/£155. Again the message is clear sell sell sell as more sheep are required to meet massive demand.

CAST EWES- Cast sheep continue to fly

A strong trade for cast sheep once again at Lancaster. Texels topped at £232 from Messrs R & DL Cornthwaite. A&E Clarkson Ltd sold one for £220. R&DL Cornthwaite sold another for £218. Messrs KA Purtill sold half a dozen over the £200 mark. Mules topped at £184 from J&A Heap & Sons. Again a lack of numbers the only issue with demand through the roof!

PRIME LAMBS

Lamb trade continues to flourish.

Stand on from last week with the demand for lambs extremely strong, and a lack of numbers and well finished sheep to suit buyers’appetites. A slightly more mixy show forward today saw smashing returns for well fleshed lambs seeing the whole sale finish with an overall average of 360p/kg.

Topping the trade today in the pence per kilo section was Harry Geldard with a tremendous pair of Texels making £222. Hampshires sold to £213 from IL Dixon and Su olks hit £196 for a pair from M&RW Stirzaker. KA Purtill fetched his usual run of quality lambs reaching 402.6p/kg for a pair of Texels. A pen of ten Texels this time at 40kg hit 394.5p/kg from DJ Clarke. 42kg lambs from W Garnett & Son sold to 395.2p/kg, while JA&R Geldard & Son sold a run of 43 kg Lleyns for 388.4p/kg or £167 for a lot of 42 in the ring at once.

Cast ewes remain a good trade with all goods keenly bid for here at J36. Well meated heavy ewes achieving the biggest returns, with the best still over £200. Best Mules and medium continentals were £165 plus, with the best horned ewes still the top side of £120.

STORE LAMBS

What a start to the season with an entry on proportion to last year, selling to a packed ring side of buyers all keen to take advantage of the current abundance of grass. Today’s sale achieved an average of £110.47, which showed a high level of confidence in the sheep trade going forward with all vendors leaving extremely well suited with prices achieved. The best short keep lambs attracted the keenest interest, selling to £149 for a pen of Texel cross lambs from AT Threlkeld, Ulverston. Closely followed by others at £144 from G&C Ryland, Underbarrow and £144 NP&CE Buckley, Staveley, with other pens £128 to £135. Fresh clean pens of medium keep lambs were regularly selling at £110 to £122, with younger long keep continental lambs well sort after ranging from £92 to £108. Hill bred lambs sold to £133 for Cheviot cross from RI Dixon, Low Newton with North County Mules well bid for to £117 from H Cook, Finthwaite, Cheviot Mules £114 from NP&CE Buckley and other NCM Mules generally £97 to £108. Pure hill lambs saw Rough Fells sell to £94 from M&G German with Herdwicks to £58 from J&E Lancaster.

Calves sold to £790 today for a Hereford bull from Jennifer Miller, Barnacre with other bulls to £770 for a British Blue from JP&C Robson, Brock. Aberdeen Angus cross sold to £770 from I Atkinson & Son, Warton with month old British Blues to £660 from RT Halhead, Cockerham. Black and Whites sold to £320 for six week olds from Pickervance Farms Ltd.

Heifer calves sold to £750 x2 for Inra 95’s from JM&MH France, Littledale with British Blues from JP&C Robson, Brock and Aberdeen Angus from I Atkinson & Son, Warton next at £690. Younger British Blue sorts sold to £660 from Bamber Farms, Brock and £630 from Pickervance Farm Ltd, Kirkham. Stirks sold to £900 for a nine month old Black and Whites from TD&A Gardner. STORE CATTLE

The weekly sale of store cattle saw a pleasing entry of 160 through the main ring, with buyers eager to keep the sheds full.

First in the ring today was a 22 month old Charolais breeding bull from Johnny Miller, Cloughton on Brock which saw spirited bidding before receiving a final bid of £3900.

Store cattle saw an increase in trade on the week with GR&A Foy, Conder Green hitting the top spot with a tremendous British Blue steer at £2600, who also had other Blue steers to £2480. All Blue steers today averaging £2071. Aberdeen Angus steers are always easy to sell at Lancaster with regular consigner A Kirkby & Co, Pilling achieving £2520, while GR&A Foy, Conder Green continuing their good day with

Angus steers to the same price. All Aberdeen Angus steers today averaged £2040. A consignment of Limousin steers from PM&ST Entwistle, Abbeystead saw a top of £2380, not far behind at £2350 for a pair of Limousin was Pilling Hall, Pilling. All Limousin steers today averaged £2110. Dairy bred steers saw a top of £2520 from R&J Dodgson, Natland for a Fleckviehs, with younger Friesian steers to £1900. All steers today averaged £2001, with some younger plainer sorts included.

Heifer stores would again see Aberdeen Angus top of the trade, with J Oddie & Sons, Balderstone back in the ring with a pen of four at £2320. T&E Garlick, Freckleton usual consignment of Aberdeen Angus cattle saw his heifers to £2300 with other Angus heifers to £2150 from P&S Alpe, Clitheroe. All Angus heifers today averaged £1935.

Limousin heifers today saw AT Burrow & Son, Gressingham to £2150, with others from the same good home to £2120 who also had Hereford heifers to £2080 for a pair.

OTM CATTLE

More OTM cattle required, Buyers needing more OTM cattle in Lancaster on a Friday morning with orders for all grades of OTM cattle. A disappointing entry of 50 OTM cattle, when three times that could have easily been sold today, saw trade similar on the week. Cast bulls today saw E Rossall, Preesall with his Simmental bull to £3220. A Hereford bull from J Whitaker & Son, Nether Kellet sold to £2441. E Rossall continued his good

day trading with his OTM Simmental heifer to £2485 or 364.5p/kg. Other beef bred OTM heifers sold to 319.5p/kg for a Hereford from J Whitaker & Son, Nether Kellet. Dairy bred OTM heifers from WE&G Hewitt sold to £1894 for a Friesian, with other Friesians at 289.5p/kg from J Whitaker & Son, Nether Kellet. OTM cows saw a quality consignment from R&E Ladds, Kendal achieve £2389 or 279.5p/kg, with other from this same good home at £2356 or 279p/kg. Other dairy bred OTM cows sold to £2124 for a Brown Swiss from EJ Hodgson, Lambrigg. MB Flatman, Over Wyresdale saw his beef bred cows to £2210 or 339.5p/kg for a British Blue, with other British Blues from JH Atkinson & Partners, Selside to 309p/kg. Limousin bred OTM cows from MB Flatman & Son, Over Wyresdale sold to £2148 or 329p/kg with other Limousin to £2120 or 309p/kg from F&IM Potter, Grayrigg. All OTM cattle averaged 278p/kg, to include some very plain cattle.
