Lancaster Dairy Sale Monday 15th May The May monthly show and sale of Dairy which included the spring show and sale of breeding bulls saw a catalogued entry of 32 cattle plus sale day entries. The pre-sale show was kindly judged by Mr Chris Ladds of Kendal and the champion rosette was awarded to a second calved cow Sandcrest Duchess 196 from J & M Sanderson of Pasture Barn selling to £1,880. The reserve champion was awarded to Witherslack Mccutchen Julie a heifer giving over the 30litre mark from The Inman Family of Strickland selling to £2,000, this heifer being part of the first prized pair of heifers with the other being Witherslack Topsy Mab selling to £1,720. A consignment of heifers from the Drinkalls Bros of Catshaw Farm, Pennine herd sold to a top of £1,900 for the 2nd prized heifer, Pennine Poppy 1268, yielding 38litres with Pennine Dorothy 484, yielding 38kg selling to £1,820. Also reaching the £1,800 mark was Bilsborrow Sammy Janna, a second calved cow yielding 36 litres from DJ & S Tomlinson of Bilsborrow Hall. In general a successful in-milk sale with purchasers looking to purchase strong heifers with plenty of milk about them. The May bull sale had an entry of four in which more could have easily been sold and to the advantage of the vendor, with many buyers leaving empty handed. A buoyant trade was enjoyed selling to a top of £2,250 for the second prized bull Liscabank Brad a dark bull from AB & J Parkinson of Liscabank. The first prize was awarded to George Sanderson and Family of the Sandley Herd with Sandley Popeye ET with a PLI +£265 with a pedigree of 9 generations of VG/EX selling to £2,000. Also achieving £2,000 was Roebridge Alan ET with a PLI +£317 from JP & C Robson of Garstang. The next dairy sale at Lancaster will be held on Monday 19th June with entries for the catalogue closing Friday 9th June. Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 12th May Lancaster saw a good show of Store Cattle today with all classes of cattle selling to a strong trade and eagerly bid for. Bullocks topped at £1390 from WS Burrow & Son from Gibraltar Farm along with a British Blue Bullock also reaching the same price consigned by PM & ST Enthwistle, Lentworth Farm who also sold Blues to £1350. Limousin Cattle sold to a top of £1350 from DE & SM Moorhouse, High House Farm. Heifers sold to a good trade today topping at £1230 from W & J Parkinson Cross House Farm for a Limousin. This was closely followed by an Angus Heifer from BW & LM Kirkby, Park House Farm selling for £1200. Black and White stores topped at £1160 from J Lamb, Old Glasson Farm for a Bullock, with Heifers selling to £1120 from H & A Stephenson. There was a smaller entry of Calves today at Lancaster but all classes saw a very good show of calves forward. Trade topped today at £390 for a British Blue Bull calf from MJ Fell Ltd. Chapel House. Monday 15th May An even larger number of Spring Lambs forward this week at Lancaster saw 302 go under the gavel, selling to seven active buyers and to a strong trade with a 13% increase on last week’s average. Top price of the day was £102 for a 46kg Suffolk from AG Butler, Park Farm Barn. Top price per kilo was 244p/kg for a pen of three 41kg Charollais from CD Slinger, Windmill Farm. Texel Spring Lambs sold to a top of £99 FW Rhodes & Son, Barrow Greaves Farm followed by K Whitaker & Son Ltd, Stirzakers selling Texels to £95. An overall market average of 207p/kg was achieved. A smaller number of Sheep and Lambs forward this week following from last week’s show and sale saw SJ & R Handley, Thornton Hall selling Mule Hoggs with twin Lambs to £180. OTM Cattle sold to a strong trade today with a good show of cows forward. The sale topped at 214.5p/kg or £1306 for a superb Limousin Cow from DP Escolme, Audlands Park. A run of Limousin Cows from G Jones, Fold Farm averaged 154p/kg or £1100. Black and white cows also enjoyed the good trade topping at 131.5p/kg from W Garnett & Son, Ackenthwaite Farm and all black and white averaged 108p/kg. A cast Bullock from JE Read, Mealrigg sold to 194.5p/kg or £1210 for an Angus. All cast cows forward averaged 127p/kg. The first Beef Breeding sale of the spring had a nice entry of 20 forward with all vendors leaving satisfied with their trade. The sale topped at £1700 for British Blue Heifer with a Limousin Heifer Calf at Foot from AW & AM Clarke, Low Longmire with a Hereford Heifer with a Hereford Calf at Foot making £1600. RC Billington & Son, Stubbins Farm had run of Limousin Heifers with British Blue Calves averaged £1440 an outfit. A small show of in-calf Heifers topped at £1120 a Limousin Heifer in calf to a Limousin Bull from JT & J Kelsall, Summerlands. Just under 100 Store Cattle went under the gavel today at J36 with grazing cattle continuing to sell well and eagerly bid for. Bullocks topped at £1100 for a Limousin from R Keith of Grange over Sands with others from the same good home selling £1090 and yearling Bullocks topped at £1070 from F & JM Mason, Mireside Farm. Heifers were in demand today and sold to £1040, twice, for Limousins from J & M Wilson, Cooper House and AW & AM Clarke, Low Longmire for yearling heifers. A smart Charolais x Heifer from AW & AM Clarke sold to £1030. Store Bulls were sought after today selling to £1000 for a 10 month old Angus from MJ & JD Handley, Archers Hall with British Blue from the same home selling to £970, also 10 months old. Tuesday 16th May A smaller entry of Sheep with Lambs at foot forward this week following the annual show and sale last week. Mule Hoggs with Single Lambs at Foot continue to sell well topping at £180 for J & T Hunter, Moser Hill. G & KM Atkinson of Green Farm sold Mule Hoggs with Texel Lambs to £172. A run of Texel Hoggs with Beltex Lambs from JA Chapman, North Lodge sold to £165 and £160, twice. A smaller number of older ewes with lambs in the market today saw Texel Ewes with Texel Lambs selling to £160 from P Whitehead of Sedbergh. Another strong entry of in excess of 200 Spring Lambs sold at J36 selling to market average 218p/kg. A strong trade for good quality export and butcher type lambs sold to a top of £109 for Texel Lambs from WJ & L Barker, Brown Edge to Higginsons Butchers of Grange of Sands. Beltex Lambs sold to a top of 252p/kg or £104 of AE Atkinson & Son, Stubb Farm. A larger number of Suffolk Mules in the market today sold to a sharper trade with Suffolk Lambs topping at £103 from M & RW Stirzaker, Station Hotel with Suffolk Lambs averaging 214p/kg and Beltex Lambs averaged 247p/kg. A very end of season entry of Prime Hoggs saw well fleshed hoggs regularly selling in and around 200p/kg. An overall market average of 187p/kg and an SQQ average of 193p/kg was achieved. The Cast Ewe trade remains strong with all specification of sheep eagerly bid for. Topping the trade was a Texel Ewes from Alan Thompson selling to £140. Thor Atkinson of Ulverston sold Texel Ewes to a top of £116 with those strong Continental Ewes selling in and around the £100 mark. Mule Ewes topped at £81 from Thor Atkinson. Horned Tups sold to a top of £77 from P & TL Edmondson of Low Hall Farm with Swaledale. Horned Ewes topped at £69 for Rough Fells from CP Bateman, Croft Foot Farm. Lean horned Ewes continue to be a strong trade selling between £35 and £45 with stronger fitter ewes £50+
