The annual prize show and sale of Rough Fell breeding rams once again attracted a high level of breeder’s keen to secure additional rams to establish new bloodlines. A top price of 700gns was achieved by VR Guy selling a two shear Roundthwaite bred ram, with the first prize aged ram from J Capstick selling at 600gns for a Blackhorse bred ram. Aged rams sold to 700gns and averaged £565.
Ram lambs sold to a top price of 1200gns for the show champion from J Hunter with others at 400gns from A Kirby. Ram lambs sold to 1200gns and averaged £830.
Shearling rams saw the strongest and those showing all true breed characteristics well competed for, with a top price of 4200gns for Brownber Irn Bru from MP&A Capstick with others at 4000gns for High Cark Incredible from I&J Mallinson and 3600gns Ellersgill Incredible from RA Steadman. Better end shearlings were generally 1000gns to 2000gns, with the next draw down 400gns to 800gns. Shearling rams sold to 4200gns and averaged £350.
An enjoyable day was had by all and we look forward to the in lamb sale in January 2026.

PRIME LAMBS
A sale of two halves today with well finished in spec lambs meeting buyers approval and under finished out of spec lambs harder to sell and better suited to the buoyant store lamb sales. A market sqq of 295p/kg was achieved with lambs forward ranging from 33kg-63kg.
Several heavyweights forward selling to £180 for Texel x from JM & MH France & Son with others generally £158-£170. Standards sold to £155 from D & D Huddleston, with other well finished £135-£142.
Lighterweights to £128 from H Birkett & Son, with super lights to £119 from GS Lander. Hill bred lambs sold to £145 for Lonks, £138 for Mules and £130 for Mashams.
Well finished continentals sold to 344p/kg from D & D Huddleston, others 315-338p/kg. Best grass finished lambs 295-308p/kg with far too many under finished lambs forward 260-280p/kg.

The numbers keep on coming.
Junction 36 wall to wall with sheep once again, with trade holding up very well for well finished types. Lambs top this week at £180 for a single Texel from TMW&H Hodgson. The same home had a further four continental lambs to 339p/kg. AJ Clarke sold Texels to 336p/kg. Some lighter well fleshed 38kg lambs from D&DW Prickett sold for 331.6p/kg. MW&M Hodgson sold a pair of Texels for 336p/kg. Mules topped at 330p/kg for a pen of eight again from Messrs Prickett. Mules topped pounds per head at £149 from Calderside Farm. Another monstrous entry of cull ewes which can be described as being predominately grazing type and hill ewes. Of the few better end continental ewes forward, those sold to £255 for Texels from T Stephens with others generally £195 to £220, with the best of the first cross ewes to £202. Other heavy better end ewes were £178 to £195, with mediums £150 to £170. The better end grazing type ewes were £118 to £130. Mules sold to £156 with other heavier end £140 to £152 and feeding types £95 to £108. Pure hill ewes sold to £166 for Cheviots, £120 Rough Fells, £118 Swaledale and £116 Herdwick. Medium horned ewes were £65 to £80, with a large proportion being hard worked light weight hill ewes £35 to £50, with several less at realisation.
69 cull rams were forward, with medium continental to £200 for Texels with others £180 to £195 and lighter weights £120 to £150. Hill bred lambs sold to £150 for Dalesbred, £104 Shetland, £102 Rough Fell and £98 Swaledale.

There was plenty of interest in stirks with more required each sale to fulfil orders.
Steers sold to £1400 for Aberdeen Angus x from Mason, Birkland Barrow with well reared British Blue x (8 month old) £1280 from M Ellison, other continentals £980£1200 and natives £900 - £1100. Younger steers sold to £840 for 5 month old Aberdeen
Angus x, dairy steers sold to £900 for 6 month old Black and Whites with others £780£850.
Heifers sold to £1040 for 9 month old British Blue x with others £850 - £940. Belted Galloways sold to £780. Just a handful of bull stirks were forward selling to £1280 for 7 month old British Blue x and Limousin x with others £1180 - £1250.

BEEF BREEDING
The special Autumn sale of beef breeding cattle was greeted with a packed ringside of bidders keen to secure additional and replacement stock. The sale commenced with breeding bulls, selling 6 month old Aberdeen Angus from TW Gorst at £3000 and a Charolais bull from JLP Roberts at £2300.
A dispersal of in-calf cows due to the Aberdeen Angus in Spring from JE & BR Booker were keenly bid for selling Hereford x cows to £2250 with others generally £1800 - £2100 and next draw down £1500 - £1750.
A feature of today’s sale was the dispersal of Hereford x Aberdeen Angus cows with Spring born Aberdeen Angus x calves from J & J Beary Farming Ltd. Those with bull calves sold to £3000, £2950, £2900 and £2800, with heifer calves £2800, £2700, £2650. The sale saw 56 outfits sold to average £2554.


The collective sale of Beef Breeding cattle saw AF & BA Dawson sell a Charolais x heifer with Aberdeen Angus x calf achieve £2800, British Blue
x heifers with Aberdeen Angus x calves sold to £2350 from RW Ewan, with other older cows with Spring born calves generally £1900 - £2400.

STORE CATTLE
A buzzing ring and buoyant trade all round.
A real buzz in the air today at Junction 36 with buyers and sellers turning out in force for another cracking sale of Store Cattle.
Shorthorn bullocks topped at £2280 for a pen of 3 at 19m old from Messrs I & AJ Armer. Charolais bullocks peaked at £2220 from EW & RM Towers. British Blue bullocks sold to £2120 from Messrs J Holme & Son. The same good farm had British Blue heifers to £2260 and Aberdeen Angus heifers to £2160. Charolais heifers sold to £2080 for a cracker at 17m old from Messrs S Robinson.

Bulls also sold very well, topping at £2300 twice for 11m old Aberdeen Angus from Messrs TW Gorst.

Best dairy cows sold to 289p/kg from Jenkin Crag Farms, medium types 250p/kg –275p/kg and leaner parlour types 210p/kg – 230p/kg. Top grossing was £2109 from Strickland Hill Farming, Witherslack.

Younger beef calves sold to £800 for British Blue cross bulls from Lawsons Dairy Ltd, with others £620 to £750 and several younger end £520 to £600. Heifers sold to £765, again for British Blue cross with others £480 to £660. Native bulls sold to £755 for Aberdeen Angus cross and £435 Aberdeen Angus cross heifers. Dairy bulls sold to £315 for 6 week old Montbeliardes with Black and Whites to £240, other mediums were generally £160 to £195.
A handful of weaned calves forward with an eye catching British Blue cross from JS&KM Wilson & Son achieved £1125. Aberdeen Angus cross steers from AJ Lyons sold at £935, with heifers from the same home £790.

Today’s sale commenced with a 24-month-oldd Charolais x steer which was kindly donated by J & H Bland & Son Ltd, Ninezergh with all proceeds being donated to Cancer Research and Blue Skies.
This steer sold for a final bid of £3200 to Mr Frank Towers, Wray. In addition to this, generous donations from the auction attendees has seen a final total of £6620 raised for these extremely worthwhile charities.

A brisk trade for all cattle with steers averaging £2109 and heifers £2060. Steers sold to £2600 and £2580 for Aberdeen Angus cross from R Townsend with other stronger beef steers £2350 to £2550. Dairy bred steers peaked at £2350 for Montbeliarde from BL&D Banks, with other strongest pens £2100 to £2300. Heifers topped at £2400 for Aberdeen cross from KH&D Holden, with British Blue cross £2380 from JD&GM Bracken. Other stronger heifers were £2050 to £2300.
