NWA Lancaster Friday 11th November There was a good number of Store Cattle forward again this week with just over 300 being sold. A plainer show of cattle forward compared with other weeks. Fleshy cattle selling well to a premium, with leaner sorts harder to place. Topping trade was a Hereford steers selling to £1320 from JS Clark and Son of Godson House Farm. With a large amount of lots breaking the £1200 mark with a handful exceeding £1300. The heifer trade topped at £1120 with British Blues from H & C Pickervance, Roseacre Hall. Black and white bullocks sold to a strong trade strong selling to a top of £1,140 from K&DE Woodhouse, Kitchen Ground Farm.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 11th November Continued…

A slightly smaller entry of Calves this week sold to a sharper trade with a lot of young month old and younger beef calves forward in the auction today. The trade topped £370 for strong Hereford Bull calves from FW Rhodes and Son of Barrow Greaves. British Blue bull calves at just a month old sold to £320 and £300 from Phil Halhead of Norbreck Farm. Limousin bull calves of the same age from J Bargh and Son of North Farm sold to £332. Native bred Angus bull calves sold to £295 from David and Eileen Wallbank of Tills Farm. Black and White bull calves sold to a top of £162 from T & CM Kelsall of Brown Brook. There was just a small entry of Store Lambs forward at Lancaster that sold to their full value to a busy ring of buyers.

Monday 14th November A larger entry of Spring Lambs sold to a mixed trade with some types of lambs selling to a dearer trade and others harder to place then previous weeks. Beltex lambs sold just shy of 200ppk from Chris Alty of Moss House Farm with plenty of pens of better type of lambs selling in the late 180ppk. A lot of heavy weight lambs this week saw heavy weight Texel’s roughly toward £30 above their weight with the trade topping at £93 from T & CM Kelsall & Sons of Brown Brook.

There was certainly more interest and demand in the Cast Sheep this morning at Lancaster with all classes of ewes eagerly bid for. Texel cross ewes sold to £91 from A & J Rhodes of Lower Kit Brow with Texel cross ewes from JM & MH France & Son of Newhouse Farm with Texel tups from the same home selling to £83. Plenty of strong Texel ewes selling into the eighties. Mule ewes sold into seventies noticeable four or five dearer then previous. An overall average of £71.57.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 10th November NWA - J36 - Had forward today 59 Calves, 2 Stirks, 34 Store Cattle and 63 OTM Cattle.

The sale of Calves and stirks had an entry forward in excess of 60. An entry, once again, mainly consisting of 70% black and white calves, with a lot of young calves amongst the consignment. Weaned British Blue bull calves sold to £395 from The Drake family of Penrith. British Blue heifer calves sold to a top of £375 from PW & D Swindlehurst of Tranthwaite Hall. Plenty of British blue calves selling easily past the £300 mark. Three week old Angus bull calves sold to £290 from KE Robinson of Kiln Hall and young beef calves sold into the late two hundreds. Strong black and white bull calves sold to £170 from The Drake family of Penrith.

There was 34 Store Cattle forward today, topping the bullock trade today was a very smart 15 month Limousin, consigned by J M Case & Son, Dendron Farm, Ulverston selling for £1030, it was also his shapely 17 month Limousin heifer that topped the heifer trade, which peaked at £980.

A consignment of Simmentals from JP & S Thorpe, Bowness Farm, Penrith, saw bullocks sell to £900 twice and heifers sell to £860 and £850. Native bullocks sold to a top of £680 for an Aberdeen Angus from FE & CM Robinson, Warth Sutton, Crooklands.

A fantastic entry of 63 Cast and OTM Cattle saw a 763kg Limousin, consigned by JJ Postlethwaite, Bramaskew, top the trade and realised £1003.35 or 131.5p/kg followed by Simentals from JE Weightman, Crabtree Farm selling to 114.5p/kg and Blonde Cow from BL Swindlehurst, Ings, also selling to 114.5p/kg.

OTM Heifers sold to a top price of £771.82 or 129.5p/kg for a British Blue consigned by I & A J Armer, Bowston Hall, Burneside.

Cast Bulls realised £895.50 or 99.5p/kg for a 900kg Limousin from Pearson & Jackson, Ellerbeck Farm.

Tuesday 8th November There as 1303 Prime Lambs, topping the lamb trade today was W S Burrow & Sons, Gibraltar Farm, with smart 50kg Charollais, selling to £90.50. Top price per kilo for lambs was 223.7p/kg for a pen of Beltexs scaling 38kg and consigned by J & D Chapman, Wray Farm.

Prime lambs were easier on the week, with the overall average finishing 152.19p/kg.

The good lengthy heavy types, 52kg plus were hitting £80-£85, shapey lambs in the 45-50kg bracket were selling to £80-£85 also. Nice handy weight ones 39-44kg, sold to £70-£80, with the light weights selling from 180p-185p/kg.

The weekly Cast Sheep sale at J36 saw once again another strong entry of in excess of 700 forward. The trade saw strong white faced ewes regularly selling between the £80 and £90 mark. In general quite a buoyant trade was enjoyed with pens of ewes selling a pound or two dearer then seen over the previous weeks with sheep numbers nationally beginning to tighten.
