NWA CHRISTMAS SHOWS Thursday 10th December 2020 Christmas Show & Sale of J36 Sale of Calves, Cull Cows & Store Cattle Christmas Show & Sale of Calves A bumper entry of Calves for the Christmas show with 145 calves forward. Vendors must be thanked for the quality of calves put before our judge today Mr William Dawson. After much time he awarded his Champion to the First prized British Blue Bull from A Pickthall, New Hutton which later went on to sell for £450. JW & TE Sharp, Lyth were awarded the Reserve rosette with their First prize British Blue heifer later selling for £380.

Trade from start to finish was flying! Out of the show British Blue bulls from DR & C Galbraith, Grayrigg peaked at £475; all Blue bulls forward averaged £355. A big show of Simmental bulls forward with a top of £390 from RF & CE Hodgson, Pennington and TW & CA Long, Ulverston selling their best to £385. Native bulls were a stronger trade than previous weeks with Angus bulls topping this section at £390 from MA & S Johns, Brough. Hereford bulls sold to £320 at 4 weeks old from JM Barton & Son, Lupton. It was good to see heifers well over the £400 mark, with Limousin’s topping at £410 from CM & CS Chappelhow, Clifton and Simmental heifers selling to £405 from TW & CA Long, Ulverston. MJ & K Ayrton, Thurnham sold a wonderful run of Blue heifers to a top of £400. Dairy bred calves were the trade of the day, Flekvieh bulls sold to £400 from Messrs Sowerby, Drybeck with others from the same home selling to £310. Messrs Robinson, Old Hutton sold Dairy Shorthorns to £205. Black & Whites were all well bid for, MA & S Johns topped the trade at £210 with others selling to £205 from MJ & K Ayrton. Medium types selling between £60-£80, all forward average £94.

A small show of weanlings forward, all selling to a full value. MJ & K Ayrton sold Simmental bulls to £615 with others from the same home selling to £610. Black and Whites were in strong demand selling to £545 from FP & G Slater, Grange over Sands.

Once again an entry in excess of 50 Cull Cows and OTM Cattle were forward at NWA J36, all selling to a competitive trade with buyers reporting ahead of other local centres. We have the ability to handle more cows at each sale with all classes and types eagerly bid for.

The sale today topped at 157.5p/kg for a Limousin Cow from CM & CS Chappelhow, Penrith with others selling to 147.5p/kg from S & M Cooper, Leece. Beef bred cows meeting eager bidding for further finishing and generally selling at 110p/kg – 125p/kg depending on age and quality. Dairy Cows sold to 131.5p/kg for a Montbeliarde from JJ & MA Park & Son, Sizergh with Holsteins selling to 121.5p/kg from JM Barton & Son, Lupton.

Medium dairy cows generally 105p/kg – 115p/kg with the leaner and parlour types 85p/kg – 98p/kg.

The top grossing cow today was the Limousin from CM & CS Chappelhow, Penrith totalling £1173.

OTM Steers sold to a top price of 174.5p/kg for a Belted Galloway from RJ Stott, Stainton with others of the same breed grossing £1019.

Cull Bulls achieved a top price of 159.5p/kg for an Aberdeen Angus from JE Wright & Son, Knutsford with a Charolais from JC Walling & Son, Lyth with a Limousin from Fishwick Bros, Longsleddale grossing £1193.

OTM heifers saw a top price of 189.5p/kg for a Limousin x from S & M Cooper, Leece who also sold British Blue x at £1087.

The concluding sale of Store Cattle in 2020 saw a fast trade for all forward with a large crowd of buyers in attendance keen to secure replacement stock with many leaving empty handed or with only half full trailers and lorries.

Steers saw a top price of £1,100 for 15 month old Limousin steers from AT Rogerson, Chipping who sold other steers from this good run at £1,050, £1,040 closely followed by Caley & Mitchinson, Troutbeck achieving £1,030. Charolais steers sold to £1,050 from JC Walling & Son, Lyth with others at £1,000 from CI Briggs, Wray. Younger continental steers sold to £870 for Blonde D’Aquitaine x from SM Richardson, Lupton and £860 for Limousin x from HM Hodgson, Old Hutton. Several suckled calves forward at today’s sale with a top price of £840 for 8 month old Limousin x from CI Briggs, Wray.

Store heifers sold to £1,100 for a British Blue x from AT Rogerson, Chipping who sold others at £1,050 and a super pen full of 13 month olds at £1,010. Charolais x heifers sold to £1,020 from JE Hadwin, Mansergh who sold Limousin x at £1,000. Suckled calves sold to £810 for a Limousin x from CI Briggs, Wray who sold others at £750 and £710 from J Alderson & Son, Howgill. Blonde D’Aquitaine x heifers from SJ & M Richardson, Lupton sold to £700 with others achieving £670.

Another good selection of Native sired store cattle attracted keen interest with several specialist purchasers in attendance. Aberdeen Angus steers sold to £1,060 from JE Wright & Son, Knutsford with Whitebred Shorthorn x steers selling to £950 from SJ & M Richardson, Lupton. Hereford x steers sold to £890 from RJ Stalker, Blawith. Pure bred Beef Shorthorn steers 8 month old from AC & C Thexton, Lowick sold to £710.

Aberdeen Angus heifers sold to £890 for JE Wright & Son, Knutsford. An entry of 10 month old Hereford x heifers from JR Senior, Cartmel sold to £620.

The next sale of store cattle is Thursday 7th January to include the New Year Prize Show & Sale of Store Cattle competing for the Janet Gorst Memorial Trophy. Buyers are already asking about this sale and keen to attend. Entries for the catalogue close Tuesday 29th December.

Sale Reports Lancaster Auction Friday 11th December 2020 Christmas Show & Sale of Calves, OTM & Store Cattle What a fantastic entry of Calves for Lancaster’s Christmas Show with 172 forward met by equally strong demand.

The Christmas Show was judged by Ian Lancaster, Wiswell who had some great calves to cast his expert eye over. The Championship rosette was awarded to David and Eileen Wallbank, Over Wyresdale for the seventh year in succession. This much admired British Blue heifer calf went onto sell for £440 purchased by the judge. The Reserve Champion rosette was awarded to WN & D Smith, Cockerham with the first prized continental bull calf a British Blue which sold to £480.

From start to finish the demand was high for all specification of calves. Best quality continental bull calves regularly flew past the four hundred pound mark. Charolais bull calves topped at £490 from Stoney Lane Farm, Nateby. Other noted prices for British Blue bulls were £470 and £450 from G & ME Woodhouse & Son, Ellel with others to £460 and £445 AJ & AJ Gibbons, St Michaels on Wyre.

Native bull calves sold to a top of £425 for Angus’ from J & G Thornley, Roseacre followed by others selling to £370 from David and Eileen Wallbank; plenty of native bull calves regularly selling in the mid three hundreds.

Black and White bull calves met by plenty of bidder’s ringside ensuring a strong trade throughout the sale. Weanling Black and Whites led the way selling to £230 and £225 from RE & P Miller, Barnacre. Black and White bull calves on milk sold to £195 from David and Eileen Wallbank with plenty of the best quality rearing calves selling around £150 and more.

A handful of stirks forward from Myerscough College, selling eight month old Angus bullocks to £625 with similar aged Black and White steers selling to £430.

Lancaster Auction held its Annual Show and Sale of Pairs of Store Cattle. The Championship pair and the Tom Owen Memorial Cup was awarded to DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland. This much admired pair of Limousin bullocks really caught the eye of our judge Tom Baldwin, Nantwich who we thank for his time and expertise, going on to purchase the Champions for £1,580. David Moorhouse purchased this pair of Bullocks out of J36 Suckler sale in March 2020 from B &SE Carter, Quernmore. The Second prize pair of bullocks from Mrs H Chapman and Son, Middleton sold to £1,400.

Native bullocks topped at £1410 from S Kellet and Sons, Pilling with a pen of four followed by others selling to £1300 from ME & J Parker, Wennington. Angus heifers topped at £1330 from P & S Alpe, Waddington. Lancaster continues to have one of the strongest rings in the country for forward cattle with more cattle continually required each week to fulfil the busy ring of buyers we have.

Dairy bullocks topped at £1,250 from K & DE Woodhouse, Ellel for Holstein Friesians.

A reduced number of Cast Cows about today which is understandable with the large numbers forward over previous weeks. An improved trade this week and more are required, especially to fulfil the ever growing demand from the large number of buyers present at Lancaster.

Topping the trade this week was a Limousin cow from loyal Lancaster supporters R H & C Ayrton, Abbystead making £1,238, not far behind was J Clarke, Lea at £1,206 also with a Limousin. Other beef bred cows making over £1,000 from H & K Hodgson, Barbon for Charolais at £1,039 and an Aberdeen Angus Cow at £1,015 from M Allen, Yealand. Friesian cows topped today at £1,139 from R T Halhead, Cockerham.

Top price pence per kilo today was a Limousin cow at 189.5ppkg from R H & C Ayrton, with another at 179.5ppkg. Friesian cows from J C Hodgson, Dent to 159.5ppkg, all cows today averaged 121.37ppkg.

OTM Heifers topped at £1,383 or 234.5ppkg from R H & C Ayrton, Abbeystead, with Friesian’s to £943 or 171.5ppkg from J G Thornley, Roseacre.

A few more cast bulls about today saw Angus’ sell to £1,300 from Cote Farm Partnership, Nether Kellet.

Lancaster Prime Lambs & Cast Sheep Monday 14th December 2020 Lancaster’s weekly sale of prime lambs had 655 forward. The overall market average was 207p/kg with a SQQ average of 210p/kg. Light weight and handy weight export lambs trade just as dear as the previous week. Heavy weight lambs between five and ten pence a kilo less than the previous week. The market topped at £119 or 270p/kg from L & A Duckett, Higher Bartle with others from the same home selling £108, £106 and £105.50 twice. The consignment of Texel lambs from Andrew Butler, Hambleton topped at £107 meanwhile TR Prickett, Hutton Roof draw of lambs topped at £105. Texel and Charolais lambs from P Lawrenson and Son, Chorley sold to £104, £102 and £100. Heavy Suffolk lambs peaked at £110.50 from TM Townley, Over Wyresdale.

Upland lambs saw 46kg Cheviots sell to £97 weighing 46kg from J Bargh and Son, Heaton with Oxcliffe. Mule lambs topped at £89.50 from DC Miller, Claughton on Brock with Swaledale lambs selling to £82 from KM & KJ Curwen, Abbeystead.

The cast sheep trade continues to improve with sheep the sharpest they have been in recent times. A consignment of Texel and Continental ewes from T & L Kirkham, Eccleston selling to £120 and £110. Plenty of Continental ewes sold around the one-hundred-pound mark. Mule ewes peaked at £98 from James Burr, Quernmore with other mule ewes selling to £96 and £94 from T & L Kirkham, Eccleston. All mule ewes forward selling to average £83.31. Upland ewes saw Cheviots sell to £75 from G Blackledge, Chorley with Scotch Blackface ewes selling to £62 from JR Mashiter, Overton.

Lancaster Dairy Sale Tuesday 15th December 2020 Dairy sell to £2650 at NWA Lancaster Christmas Dairy Sale The Christmas show and sale of Dairy Cattle at North West Auctions Lancaster saw an attractive catalogued entry of both pedigree and commercial cattle attract buyers from throughout the northern counties, Cheshire and a successful sale to an Irish customer.

The pre-sale show was judged by Mr G Bradley, Preesall who awarded the Championship rosette to ‘Bilsrow Applejax Rolls’ shown by Tomlinson Bilsrow Ltd, which was pulled out from a very strong class of 10. The Reserve rosette was won by ‘Elitestreet Minnesota Modesty’ shown by A & J A Barrow, Winsford. The cow class was won by A V Lord & Co showing ‘Goadsbarrow Dusky 35’.

Vendors are to be complimented on the quality of cattle presented at today’s sale for which they were duly rewarded with a fast trade with an abundance of buyers in attendance with several new and returning faces.

The sale topped at £2,650 for the much admired ‘Phoenix Windstorm J Wendy’ from A Swale, Blackburn bred from 5 generations of VG/EX and giving a current yield of 31 litres, she will soon be at her new home across the water in Northern Ireland. She was closely followed by the show champion ‘Bilsrow Applejax Rolls’, on behalf of Tomlinson Bilsrow Ltd, from 8 generations of VG/EX cows selling at £2,600.

A pair of heifers from E H & R Eccles, Chorley saw ‘Denhamhill Morley Sonya 4’ sell at £2,480 with ‘Denhamhill Marley Jenny’ selling at £2,420.

‘Pennine Bolivia 12’ from Drinkall Bros, Abbeystead found a new home in Cheshire at £2,400 with B & V Swann, Chorley selling ‘Carwood Jonas Amethyst 46’ at £2,320 to the same purchaser. ‘Blackwood Embla 508’ from J T & B Fox, Quernmore also achieved £2,320. A trio of well bred heifers from A & A J Barrow, Winsford sold to £1,950 for ‘Elitestreet Minnesota Modesty’ with ‘Fortune Showbiz Sofia Spirit’ bred from 12 Generations VG/EX selling at £1,920.

Unregistered heifers sold to £1920 for a ‘Pello’ sired heifer consigned by R L & J Crowe, Ulverston.

Pedigree cows saw a top price of £2,380 being paid for ‘Wyredale Control Bendy 203’ from MJ & H Atkinson, Quernmore with a trio from the ‘Goadsbarrow’ herd of A V Lord & Co, Aldingham selling to £1,980 for ‘Goadsbarrow Dusky 35’ and a special note to ‘Goadsbarrow Sunray 11’, fresh into her 6th Lactation at £1,680.

In calf cows The consignment of in-calf cows on behalf of Messrs Halpin, Barrow in Furness all due Jan/Feb to a Holstein bull sold to £1,020 with others achieving £980, £960.

Sale Reports J36 RURAL AUCTION CENTRE Tuesday 15th December North West Auctions, J36 weekly sale of Prime Lambs saw, as nationally, the trade slightly easier. There was an entry of 1473 forward selling to an overall market average of 202p/kg with an SSQ average of 208p/kg.

Heavy weighted lambs have taken the largest hit and instead of regularly selling easily in excess of the 200p/kg mark often sold around the 190p/ kg mark. Handy weighted export lambs continue to be in strongest demand with Texel bred lambs around the 40kg mark and well fleshed regularly selling between 215p/kg and 220p/kg. The light weight trade this week was slightly more selective as the orders become full for the Christmas export trade.

Leading the way this week at £108 were 50kg Texel lambs from EI EA & TW Wilson, Flookburgh and others from the same home selling to £107.

Other Texel lambs sold to £107 from AW Crowe, Witherslack, weighing 44kg. Beltex lambs sold to a top of 291p/kg or £102 from EI EA & TW Wilson, this was closely followed by 284p/kg and 264p/kg from JT & PH Thompson, Selside. Better confirmation lambs regularly sold between 230p/kg and 250p/kg. Upland lambs sold to a top of £96.50 for 48kg Mules from EW & JR Parkinson, Clitheroe. Pens of Mules regularly sold around the 200p/kg mark.

The weekly sale of cast sheep had 462 forward which saw all specifications of sheep sell to an increased trade. Cast rams led the way topping at £158 for Texels from GM Metcalfe Jnr, Underbarrow. Charollais cast tups sold to £140 from BR Harrison, Staveley with other Texels selling to £129 from JA Bennett, Longsleddale, with plenty other Continental cast tups easily selling beyond the £100 mark.

Cast sheep peaked at £124 for JA & R Geldard & Sons, Levens.

Suffolk ewes peaked at £116 from JC Walling & Son, Lyth.

Heavy weight Continental ewes easily sold in excess of the £100 mark. Mule ewes peaked at £103 from MJ Waller, Lupton with pens of strong Mule ewes regularly selling around the £90 mark.

Horned sheep topped at £88 for a Rough Fell cast tup from BJ Bainbridge, Shap. Rough Fell ewes sold to a top of £76 from RJ & OB Simpson, Longsleddale. Topping at £76 were Swaledale ewes from T & H Drinkall, Oakenclough with best horned ewes regularly selling towards the £70 mark.
