J36 NWTBC Show & Sale of Texels Sunday 13th August Record Breaking Price for Texels at J36 The annual show and sale of Pedigree Texel Rams and Females on behalf of the North West Texel Breeders Club was held on Sunday 13th August 2017 at North West Auctions, J36 Rural Auction Centre. The sale is gaining momentum each year and attracting attention from breeders throughout the England. The pre-sale show was skilfully judged by Mr Ben Vernon of Charben who had some impressive classes put before him, with seventeen entries for the Ram lamb class. A strong line up for the championship saw Peter Woof of Stainton awarded the champion rosette with lot 94, a Gimmer Shearling out of one of the best breeding lines in the Stainton flock, sired by Eden Valley Warrior King and mother sired by Sportsman Tremendous II. The reserve champion was awarded to lot 95, again, from Peter Woof with a Gimmer Shearling sired by Eden Valley Warrior King. A tremendous pen of Gimmer Shearlings from Peter Woof attracted a lot of interest from far and wide and they truly are a credit to Peter and his family. It was lot 93 a Gimmer Shearling, which was awarded the 2nd prize in a strong class at Great Yorkshire show 2017, sired by Eden Valley Warrior King that sold to the day’s top price of 3,500gns to C Boden of the Sportsman Flock and breaking the auction mart record for the highest priced Texel. The champion, lot 94, sold to 2900gns joining Nick Woodmass of the Harene flock of Longtown, with Gimmer Shearlings from the same good home selling to 1450gns and 1050gns. Gimmer lambs sold to a top of 2,400gns for the first prized Gimmer Lamb, lot 133, which was sired by Knock Yankee, from R E J Pierce of the Oldford flock. In general, a brisk female trade was enjoyed throughout the sale. The Ram trade saw better quality Rams in demand with a smart pen of Ram Lambs from Proctors Farms selling to a top of 850gns for lot 60, Proctors Alex, with others from the same home selling to 800gns and 780gns. Shearling Rams sold to 580gns, twice, from Richard Wilson of the Eden Valley flock, Appleby with Aged Rams topping at 500gns from M P Berry of Stalmine. Lancaster Sale Reports Lancaster Lads - Show & Sale of Terminal Sire Breeding Rams Thursday 10th August The annual show and sale of terminal sire Breeding Rams had a smaller entry of just over 100 forward for the sale this year. Thanks go to our pre-sale judges for their time and expertise, Andrew Wilson, David Miller, Bill Livesey and Andrew Fur. The overall Champion was awarded to the Beltex x Shearling Ram from ST Birkett of Carnforth selling for £650 to Bill Livesey. The Reserve Champion was awarded to a Texel Shearling from SG Mellor of Stoke on Trent selling for £450. A buoyant Suffolk trade was enjoyed with virtually a 100% clearance for Suffolk rams topping at £650 for the first prize shearling from JH Towers and Sons of Tunstall who also sold Suffolk shearlings to £520. The second prize Suffolk shearling sold to £650 from J & F Nutter of Hurst Green, with all Suffolk shearlings selling to a market average of £384. Suffolk ram lambs topped at £450 for the first prize ram lamb from TA Blair of Thornfleet. There was just a handful of Charollais shearling rams in the market from JA & R Geldard and Sons selling to a top of £420 and £400. A mixed Texel and Beltex trade was had with some rams getting away well and others slightly struggling. Texel rams sold, twice to £500 from JT & J Kelsall of Cold Cotes with Beltex x rams selling to £500 from the Ayrton Family of Bambers Farm. There was just a small entry of April born Texel ram lambs in selling to £200 from F Carr of Arkholme.

Friday 11th August The weekly Sale of Store Cattle had a catalogued entry of 396, which saw a slightly sharper trade throughout. The trade was topped at £1440, twice, firstly for a pen of two British Blue Bullocks followed by an Aberdeen Angus Bullock both from JD & GM Bracken of Garstang. Native Cattle saw Hereford Bullocks sell to £1330 from EW & CR Clegg & Son of Poulton Le Fylde. Aberdeen Angus Heifers sold to £1200 from D & N Davis of Garstang with Hereford Heifers selling to £1100 from DH & M Kellet of Thurnham. Charolais Yearlings Bullocks sold to £1120 and Charolais Yearling Heifers sold to £1060 from Ballacutchel Farms of the Isle of Man. Friesian Bullocks sold to £1170 from J Prest & Son of Bay Horse with still plenty still selling in excess of £1000. All Bullocks overall averaged £1059 with all Heifers averaging £1008. The weekly sale of Cast Cows saw a smaller entry forward this week. The trade saw lean and plainer cows sell to a sharper trade this week with well fleshed and meaty cows still selling to a continued good trade. There was an overall market average of 126.58p/kg with all Black and Whites selling to a market average of 118.7p/kg. The sale topped at 179.5p/kg for a Limousin Cow from RS & BA Harker of Holme. Black and White Cattle sold to 177.5p/kg from MJ & K Ayrton of Thurnham. Plenty of Black and Whites still selling around the 130-140p/kg mark. OTM British Blue Steers sold to 159.5p/kg from C Hargreaves & Son of Morecambe. A few Cast Bulls forward on the market today which sold to 159.5p/kg for a Stabiliser Bull from JA & R Geldard & Sons of Levens. Monday 15th August The weekly sale of Prime Lambs had a similar number forward this week selling to a brisk trade that was in line with other sale centres at the end of the week. The overall market average was 184p/kg as well finished lambs continue to sell to a premium. Well shaped Beltex and Texel lambs sold in excess of the 200p/kg mark topping at 207p/kg or £93 from TR Prickett of Hutton Roof. Top price of the day was £99 for heavy weight Suffolk lambs from J & R Waller of Killington with Texels topping at £98 from Andrew Butler of Hambleton. More hill lambs on the market sold to a top of £85 for Mashams from BD Gill of Ingleton with Mules from the same home selling to £79. Continentals continue to sell into the nineties topping at £96 from MJ & K Ayrton of Bambers farm. Mules sold to a top of £87 from J Whewell of Scorton with, in general, strongest Mule ewes selling into the seventies. J36 Sale Reports Thursday 10th August The fortnightly sale of Store Lambs saw an increased entry forward this week. There has been a busier ringside of buyers at previous sales but the ring side was slightly quieter today with many farmer buyers taking advantage of the good weather and making silage. Medium and short keep Continental and Suffolk lambs were eagerly bid for, selling to plenty of interest with long keep and Mule lambs harder to place. The largest lambs were still selling in excess of £70, topping at £82 for Texels from M Potter of Tebay, with other Texels from Simon Temple of Yealand selling to £73.50. Suffolks from topped at £73 from M Gibson of Sedbergh with others selling to £69.50 from SJ & NS Wood, Windermere. Beltex lambs topped at £70 from RH & C Ayrton of Abbeystead. Mule lambs sold to a top of £65.50 from E Parker of Crag Bank with Mules in general slightly harder to place following what has been a very brisk trade at J36. Tuesday 8th August A firm trade was seen at J36 today for all types of Prime Lambs forward. Medium & Heavy Lambs within the weight ranges of 39-52kgs seeing a tremendous overall average of 192p/kg over both sections. An overall market average of 189.32p/kg being achieved for all lambs sold. Top prices of the sale coming from MA&JA Winn of Burneside at 245p/kg for quality Beltex Lambs. £111 being the top price of the day from KL&G Patterson of Foxfield for heavy Texel Lambs. Most vendors noticing an improvement on trade from the previous week, with several lots of lambs still achieving over 200p/kg. Suffolk Lambs selling to 200p/kg from WJ&LA Barker of Arkholme and D Metcalfe of Dalton in Furness. Texel Lambs selling to 228.9p/kg from L Graham of Kendal.
