NWA J36 NEMSA Sale Saturday 10th September North West Auctions held its annual show of North England Mule Gimmer Lamb show on Friday 9th September 2016. This year’s judges Mr Richard Wilson of Kendal and Mr Richard Little of Penrith and referee Mr Richard Batty of Kendal had eighteen pens of ten and ten pens of twenty to cast their expert eye over. A fantastic show of sheep with many commenting that the quality improves each year and is a true credit to all vendors for their time and effort. The first prized pen of ten was awarded to JA & CA Gibson, Longwell, Selside, winning the Goad Memorial Trophy. Frist Prize in the pens of twenty was awarded to A & H Watson of Middleton hall winning the Jim Gibson Memorial Trophy. A new venture for 2016 was the “Stars in Your Eyes” individual show and sale of mule gimmer lambs which was kindly sponsored by Macbeth, Scott and Co insurance brokers. A fantastic entry of 11 lambs were put in front of Judge Philip Elliot of Mungrisedale. After much deliberation the first stars in your eyes champion rosette was awarded to JA & CA Gibson, Longwell, Selside and the second prize rosette awarded to JF Cook of Moss Howe. The champion lamb went onto sell for £255 with the second prize lamb selling to £245 both going home with the judge. A fantastic evening was had by all and it was brilliant to have such a busy auction market with a real buzz with many new faces ringside, which is always brilliant too see. The much anticipated great annual sale of North of England Mule Gimmer lambs on Saturday 10th September 2016 had a larger entry than in previous years with 7595 lambs forward. There was a busy ring side from start to finish and it was fantastic to see so many returning faces around the ring, returning to buy the quality stock on offer at J36 plus fresh faces looking to purchase for the first time, with Mule Gimmer Lambs travelling throughout England and Wales to their new homes. The packed ring saw Mule Gimmer Lambs sell to an average of £94.58 nearly five pounds up on the previous year. The trade held very firm from the start through to the end with vendors leaving extremely chuffed with their trade. The sale topped at £205 for the champion pen from JA & CA Gibson with plenty of top pens of lambs selling around the £150 with many of buyers looking to buy strong tupping lambs around the £100 mark and running lambs looking dearest on the day, more lambs could have been sold. There was just shy of 100 Cast Cows forward saw a mixed show of cows on offer, with anything with meat selling to a premium. Lean cows harder to sell this week due to slaughter houses not able to take cattle due to the Muslim festival. Cast cows averaged 100.55p/kg with a Shorthorn cow topping the trade at 159.5p/kg. Lancaster had forward 22 Young Calves at their weekly sale.There was a nice show of calves on offer this morning, with the stronger wellbred types selling to a sound trade. Monday 12th September There was another strong entry in excess of 1,100 Prime Lambs forward for the sale at Lancaster. The busiest ringside of buyers seen at Lancaster seen for some time, saw a market average of 175ppk. Leicester Rams sold to £91 from JS & S Atkinson of Sykes Farm with continental ewes selling to £85 from RHM & S Boyren of Ulverston. Plenty of powerful mule ewes in the market sold into the early seventies topping twice at £72 from JM Sanderson of Low Highfield and A & FM Bolland & Son of Yeat House. J36 Sale Reports Ambleside Fair Friday 9th September The Ambleside Fair show and sale had a bumper entry this year with more than 2,800 Gimmer Lambs going under the gavel. Plenty of new faces around the ring which is always pleasing to see but even better to see many returning customers in the market purchasing Lambs again. A nice line up of lambs forward for the show saw the first prize rosette and then overall champion Rosette awarded to B & HM Wilson and Family of Ashteads Farm, which went onto sell for £122. An entry of mainly fell lambs and young lambs forward for the sale saw tupping lambs easily selling into the nineties and nicer types of runners into the eighties with an overall market average of £79.18, a few pounds up on previous years with vendors leaving well satisfied. Cheviot mule lambs are gaining more and more in popularity each year selling nearly £15 up on the previous year selling to a top of £127 from S Crawford of Staveley. Mashams slightly harder to sell this year with a few regular Masham gimmer lamb buyers missing, Mashams sold to a top of £82 from JA Bennett of Middale farm. The Rough Fell Mule pre-show sale had an impressive line-up out in front of the judge, Ashley Purchase of Barnstaple, a credit to the breeders in how the Rough Fell Mule breed has grown in popularity. The first prize rosette was awarded to Brian and Jayne Knowles of High Borrowbridge. It was a strong sale from start to finish with buyers old and new looking to purchase gimmer lambs. The day’s top price was for the first prize lambs from Brian and Jayne Knowles selling to £135. Plenty of pens sold into the nineties with buyers looking for powerful good coloured lambs. Tuesday 13th September NWA J36 had forward 1306 Prime Lambs, 436 Cast Sheep, 70 Prime Pigs and 39 Store Pigs at their weekly sale on Tuesday 13th September. The 1306 Prime Lambs averaged 175.73p. Top price per head today was £104 for a pen of 8 Beltex from W S Burrow & Sons, Gibraltar Farm, Silverdale. W S Burrow & Sons also had the top price per kilo of 206p for a 50 kg Beltex. Handy weight lambs 39-44 kg, which had condition and quality sold to 190-200p. Heavy type lambs, which suit the butchers market sold from £90-£100. A plain and lean entry of Cast Ewes forward this week sold very well considering the quality of the sheep forward. Cross bred Texel ewes sold into the eighties topping at £85 from LM & C Whitaker of Moorland Cottage. There was a shortage of quality heavy weight ewes forward today. Strong Mule ewes were few and far between, topping at £68 from LM & C Whitaker of Moorland Cottage, with bigger Mule ewes which were carrying meat getting into the sixties. The monthly sale of all types of Pigs had a strong entry of over 100 forward. Prime pigs were in strong demand and the best to sell were between 70kg and 110kg. Those weights were easily selling in excess of £1 per kilogram. Better quality Pietrain types of pigs sold in excess of 130ppk and topped at 145ppk from Peter Woof of Stainton, with pigs from the same home selling to the day’s top price of £133. Store and Weaner pigs were all black breeds with buyers looking mainly to purchase white breeds of pigs. Weaner Pietrain x Saddle back weaners saw boars sell to £38 and gilts to £35 DB & RM Willison of Westhouse.
