NWA J36 Show & Sale of Rough Fell Breeding Rams Saturday 10th October New Breed Record of 10,000gns A new breed record of 10,000gns was achieved at the Annual Show and Sale of Rough Fell Breeding Rams held at North West Auctions J36 Rural Auction Centre.

Selling at 10,000gns was a Shearling Ram ‘High Cark Yankie’ from I, J & M Mallinson, Selside, Cumbria, selling at the record breaking price to T, L, B & J Knowles, High Borrow Bridge, Kendal. With a packed ringside of on lookers bidding soon surpassed all expectations and under the guidance of auctioneer Matthew Probert reached a price unseen at previous sales with the ram selling to a price almost double that of the previous record.

Soon after MP & A Capstick, Highlane sold the show Champion Shearling Ram ‘Brownber Yobbo’ to MJ & JD Handley, Catholes for 4,600gns. Another flock to enjoy a strong trade was that of MJ & JD Handley who sold the pick of their entries RF2794 at 3,600gns to FB Dunning & Son closely followed by RF2797 at 3,100gns selling to A & H Watson, Middleton.

Eager bidding saw a further seven Rams sell in excess of 2,000gns which included RF2817 at 2,900gns from RH Thexton, Luneside selling to CP Bateman, Docker, closely followed by the first prize Shearling from the small breeders class, shown by RA Steadman, Ellergill, who sold RF2736 for a final bid of 2,800gns to I, J & M Mallinson and MJ & JD Handley also selling at 2,800gns.

GM Sedgewick & Son sold RF2828 Y2 at 2,600gns with a pair from I, J & M Mallinson achieving 2,400gns, 2,100gns and RF2742 from E & K Bland, Cotegill achieving a final bid of 2,000gns to SL Hoggarth, Sedbergh.

Twenty One Rams sold in excess of 1,000gns which included the first prize Ram Lamb from FB Dunning & Son, Raisgill Hall, achieving 1,100gns purchased by AG Mackie, alongside the first prize Aged Ram and Reverse Champion from SW Huck, Dale View selling at 1,000gns to GR Park & Sons, Grayrigg.

Auctioneer Matthew Probert Said “Rough Fell Sheep have experienced revived interest over the last few years and customers were keen to secure strong, well bodied replacement breeding stock”.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 9th October The strong Store Cattle numbers continue to come at Lancaster with the usual buyers plus a few additional faces around the ring. The edge was slightly of the cattle trade today with the deadweight prices easing all week and many buyers sheds filling with the large amounts of cattle available on the market. Steers sold to a top of £1500 from JJ Valiant of Shire Farm with plenty of big well fleshed steers selling easily in excess of £1250. Heifers sold to a top £1240 from TE & BM Makinson of Holmgarth for a Simmental.

A better show of Calves this morning at Lancaster. Topping the day was JH Towers & Son, Tunstall Hall with an Angus bull realising £405. Blue Bulls sold to £385 from TD & V Whitaker, Park Lane Farm. Montbelliarde calves to £245 at 23 days old from JR Pye, Hatters Farm. Black and White calves in demand, topping at £180 from Drinkall Bros, Catshaw Hall. A fantastic run of calves from Maurice Capstick sold to £175, £160, £145. Overall average of £93 for all forward. Stirks sold to £410 for Blues from J CH & JG Bland, Arnside Tower and £255 for Friesians from I Atkinson & Son, Boon Town.

Machinery Sale Saturday 10th October The October Machinery Sale at Lancaster had a good entry of farm machinery and equipment forward, with a large attendance of buyers to match. Topping the sale was a west 1300 Dual Muck Spreader at £880. An Ifor Williams Sheep trailer with decks saw a final call of £700. An entry of 4 heavy duty cattle handling gates sold to £240.

Monday 12th October The weekly sale of Prime Lambs sold to a tough trade with large numbers forward in markets last week and many meat companies full of deadweight lambs over the weekend lead to a very depressed price at Lancaster in comparison to previous weeks. An overall market average of 138ppk with a large quantity of heavy weight lambs forward with many buyers saying that the market nationwide being over supplied. The trade topped at £75 from FK & FM Woodhouse of Fell End with heavy weights. Light weight lambs continue to sell well with Beltex types selling to 180ppk from David Prickett of Farleton House. Mules sold to a top of £63 from J Bargh & Son of North Farm with many pens of Mules selling in the late fifties.

A better show of Cast Ewes this morning with 150 passing through the ring. Mules sold to a top of £58 from M & RW Stirzaker, Milnthorpe, best sorts selling above £54. Texels sold to £93 for a pair of ewes from CR Eastwood, Overdales, with half bred Texels in the mid-sixties. Swales forward in bigger numbers this morning, topping at £55 for a pair from FA Nowell & Sons, Mewith. Best swales in advance of £30 with feeders in the mid-twenties. Overall average of £44 for all forward.

The weekly sale of Prime Cattle had three bulls forward from GA Haston & Son of Lane House with all Montbeliarde’s sold to a top of 174.5ppk or £1073.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 8th October A smaller entry of Calves and Stirks forward this week, with an entry of 46 forward. A good trade throughout, with vendors pleased with the trade achieved for their calves. British blue bulls were in strong demand, selling to £400 and £390 from A & E Barnes of Brackenfold at four to five weeks old, with others selling to £365 from SJ & LM Towler of Birds Park Farm. Plenty of beef calves selling to their value, realising the mid to late £200’s. Black and whites saw stronger and better types sell in excess of £110 and topping at £155 from the Drake Family of Whitestone Farm, Penrith.

A few black and white bull stirks in the market saw well grown May born bulls sell to £320 from F Barnes & Son of Woodhouse Farm, with a selection, also May born black and whites, from B Butterfield and Son of Moss House Farm selling to £200.

The second sale of Gimmer Lambs at J36 had a strong entry of just shy 1,200 forward. An entry mainly consisting of fell lambs and running lambs, with a few tupping lambs forward. Tupping lambs easily sold in the late eighties and into the nineties, selling to a top of £101 from the Inman Family of Strickland Hill.

Plenty of pens of bonny running lambs, selling between £74 and £84. A market average of £75.20, with an active ringside of both local and off-coming buyers. A consignment of Cheviot Mules from Ian Dixon of Low Newton sold to £80. A few Mashams forward sold to a top of £71 twice. Continental and Suffolk gimmer lambs sold to a selective trade with buyers looking to buy well-grown, good-skinned, smarter types, they topped at £82 from A H B Murray of Gretna for a pen of Texels.

STORE LAMBS SELL TO £62.50 AT WEEKLY NWA J36 SALE The weekly sale of Store Lambs saw a rise in numbers forward with 2466 passing through the ring. Buyers eager to secure stock with the increasing availability of grass, with all types and classes competed for, producing a market average of £50.06.

Best groups of Continental and Suffolk lambs £55 - £58, peaking at £62.50 for a pen of 32 Texel x from MW & MR Black. Medium keep lambs £49 - £54, with smaller longest keep lambs mid £40’s. Hill lambs saw Mules sell to £57 (av £49), Cheviots £53.50 and pure horned lambs to £50.50 for Rough Fells.

Ram lambs sold to £58.50 for Texel x, mediums generally £42 - £48 with poorer bred sorts late £20’s and early £30’s.

Show & Sale of Swaledale Breeding Rams Saturday 10th October The annual show and sale of Swaledale breeding rams was kindly judged by Shaun Taylor of Clapham.

The aged ram first prize was awarded to J & AJ Coates Braida Garth with a three shear bred by Philip Dawson of Kentmere Hall. The first prize for a shearling was awarded to Peter Edmondson of Low Hall.

The sale saw the first prize Aged Ram selling to a top price of £400 from J & AJ Coates, Braida Garth with the first prize shearling selling to £200.

J36 Sale Reports Tuesday 13th October The monthly sale of Pigs saw 94 forward and were sold to a sharper trade than the previous sale. Well finished prime pigs sold to £136 for a pen of 3 gilts from Messers Strong & Preston, Row Moor Farm followed by P Woof, Stainton selling gilts at £134, £120. Prime pigs easiest sold in the 85kg - 100kg weight range. Cast sows sold to £92. Weaners sold to £30 for Pietrain x from N Wilkinson, Roosecote Farm with others £28, youngest sorts £10 - £15.

The next sale of pigs will be held on Tuesday 10th November.

An entry of 2,157 Prime Lambs sold to a market average of 135pkg for a 100% clearance with 12 buyers ringside, this average being in line with other sale centres and with a reported falling national average.

The sale commenced with a new section for light lambs which saw towards 300 forwards, best meated sorts £53 (34kg) with others £50 - £52. Pure hill lambs saw a pen of 31kg Herdwicks achieve £45 and Swaledales £42. Buyers keen to attend this sale with meated lambs required, not stores.

The market topped at £83.50 for heavy weight Suffolks from T Parkin with well finished pens of 42kg – 45kg lambs £65 - £69 peaking at £70 for Texels from SP Pease. Well fleshed lambs short of requirements and selling at 140p/kg – 155p/kg and peaked at 160p/kg for best Texel x lambs for JE Nuttall.

Leaner and under finished lambs harder to sell with buyers also showing a preference towards assured lambs. We would encourage vendors to consider joining an assurance scheme to allow lambs to be marketed to their full potential. Hill bred lambs rising in numbers with mules achieving £55-£61, cheviots £54 - £60 and horned lambs £40 - £53.

The weekly sale of Cast Sheep and rams had another good entry of sheep with 545 passing through the ring. A strong trade for the quality of sheep forward with many consignments of hill bred and plainer ewes forward in the market. Better quality Texel ewes sold to a top of £94 from SW Atkinson & Son of Capplerigg Farm with Texel rams selling to £91 from ML & SM Dobson of Espford Farm. Stronger Texel ewes selling £70 plus. A plainer show of Mule ewes in the market with stronger types selling £60 plus and plenty of pens medium types of ewes selling in the late fifties. Hill types saw Cheviot ewes top at £62 and average £46. Swaledale ewes sold to £42 with leaner ewes eagerly bid for as all Swaledale’s forward selling to average over £30.
