Anniversary Show & Sale of Calves & Store Cattle - Thursday 7th February The Anniversary show of Store Cattle saw 20 cattle forward in the two show classes with the judging kindly conducted by Mr I Wainwright, Fife. The Championship rosette was awarded to a Limousin x heifer from MA & JA Winn, Burneside which later sold for £1280 selling to the judge. Reserve Champion was a Limousin x heifer from N Cooper & Sons, Broughton in Furness which sold for £1040. The first prize steer was a BrB x from MA & JA Winn which achieved the day’s top price of £1310. Another strong catalogued entry of cattle saw buyers in attendance from throughout the Northern Counties, Midlands and Scotland. A buoyant trade was experienced for all cattle throughout the sale with more needed to fulfil buyers’ requirements. The sale topped at £1310 for a British Blue x steer from MA & JA Winn with other stronger steers £1100 - £1250. Well-grown yearling steers sold to £1115 for Limousin x from D Nicholson, others generally £950 - £1100, younger cattle £750 - £880 depending on quality and breed. Heifers peaked at £1280 for Limousin x from MA & JA Winn with other wellbred and strong heifers £1000 - £1150. Yearlings sold to £920 for a Blonde x from MJ Whitworth with others regularly £700 - £850. A large number of native bred cattle saw Hereford steers sell to £1080 from MJ Waller and Aberdeen Angus x £1070 from TA & DH Knipe with a Shorthorn from J Black & Son achieving £870. Native heifers topped at £935 for Hereford x from JL Bird with Aberdeen Angus x to £850 from RG Robinson. Native bred cattle attracted keenest interest with named sire status. Dairy bred steers sold to £670 for Holstein Friesian, £630 Jersey x and £610 Fleckvieh. Young bulls stopped at £800 for Limousin x from HM Hodgson with others £700 - £780. The Anniversary show and sale of Calves had a good entry of 65 calves forward. Thanks must be given to our Judge Mr Moorhouse this morning, who awarded the champion rosette to the first placed beef heifer from B Mallinson & Son, Levens. The champion calf topped the trade at £400 with the judge backing his judgement. R Morris-Eyton & Son, Whicham’s run of calves were very well sought after, again, topping at £300, twice, for British Blue bull and an Aberdeen Angus heifer. Plenty of beef calves selling in the £200-£250 mark. Dairy bred bulls were a sharper trade with a new face around the ring looking to purchase. Friesian bulls peaked at £105 from R Morris Eyton & Son, with plenty of black and white calves between the £60 to £80 mark. A young show of 25 stirks were forward with a pleasing trade being seen. Topping the stirk section at £490 was a Limousin bull from D & DW Prickett, Farleton, with heifers peaking at £490 for Angus’ from DJ Clarke, Underbarrow. MA & S Johns, Kirby Stephen’s run of 6 month old stirks were well sought after topping at £420 for bullocks with heifers from the same home to £370. Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 8th February There was another good entry of Store Cattle forward this week which saw all types of cattle selling to a sharper trade. Leading the way this week at £1370 was a British Blue from R & DM Rossall & Son, Pilling. This was closely followed by Limousin Bullocks selling to £1340 from DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland with Charolais from the same good home selling to £1330. Also achieving £1330 was Charolais bullocks from H Chapman & Son, Middleton. A consignment from JA & LR Wilson, Millom saw Limousins sell to £1320 and British Blues to £1300. Angus bullocks topped at £1300 from W & A Cardwell, Stalmine with other Angus bullocks selling to £1280 from M & L Preece, Kirkby Lonsdale. The heifer trade was topped at £1300 from Angus’ from R & DM Rossall & Son, closely followed by £1280 for Angus’ from SJ Brass, Carnforth. 15% of the cattle forward today sold for £1200 or more. Black and white bullocks sold to a top of £1090 from L Parson & Sons, Levens with others selling to £1030 from D Clark, Milnthorpe. All store cattle forward today averaged in excess £1000 with buyers eager to purchase all types of cattle at Lancaster.

There was a terrific entry of 174 Cast Cows forward this week which was met with fresh buyers ringside looking to purchase cows with plenty of well-fleshed cows on offer leading to a very strong overall market average of 113p/kg. Leading the way today at 199.5p/kg was Cast Limousin bullocks from DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland coming to £1137 this was closely followed by 197.5p/kg for a Cast Limousin heifer from JA & LR Wilson, Millom selling to £1303. Young cows sold to a top of 184p/kg from EJ Hodgson & Son, Lambrigg for a Limousin. The top price cow for the day was a Simmental cow from Barlow Bros, Croston selling to £1307 with Limousin cast bulls selling to £1216 from J Bargh & Son, Heaton-with-Oxcliffe. Plenty of big heavy weight cattle sold around the £1200 mark. There was plenty of black and white cows selling between 115p/kg and 125p/kg. All black and white cows forward averaged well over 100p/kg.

The weekly sale of Calves saw a smaller entry this week in which more could have easily been sold. Leading the way today was a British Blue bull calf selling to £300 from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale. Also achieving £300 was Barker Farms, Carnforth with an Angus bull calf. A consignment of Beef calves from TM Townley, Over Wyresdale saw Angus bulls sell to £280 and British Blue to £275. Plenty of beef calves sold around the two hundred mark. A major shortage in black and white calves today in which more are need to fulfil our buyers requirements, saw the trade top at £185 and £160 from T & CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping with an overall market average for black and whites of £118 with no black and white calves selling below £62 today.

Monday 11th February The weekly sale of Prime Hoggs saw a smaller entry forward but selling to a competitive trade, in which more are required and needed to fulfil the demands of our buyers. The market topped at £90, twice for Suffolks from T & E Burrow, Slyne and for Texels from David Dickinson, Thurnham with plenty of pens of hoggs selling in the mid to late eighties. Top pence per kilo 212p/kg from T & E Burrow, with plenty of good conformation hoggs selling in the 190p/kg mark. Mule hoggs sold to a top of £77 from M & L Preece, Carnforth. J36 Sale Reports Thursday 7th February continued from front page The sale of Cull Cows saw a rise in the trade with all cows sold averaging 103p/kg with over half the entry being dairy bred. Well-fleshed beef cows sold to 145p/kg for a Stabiliser cow from CP Bateman, Docker with feeding type cows 120p/kg – 140p/kg. Top grossing beef cow was £882 from N Cooper & Sons, Broughton in Furness. Heavy and well-meated dairy cows sold to 129p/kg from RA & E Edmondson, Levens with medium parlour sorts 98p/kg – 110p/kg with leanest sorts a few bids less. The top grossing dairy cow achieved £810 from RA & E Edmondson. Several OTM heifers were forward and easily sold with a Shorthorn achieving 174p/kg (£855) from TW & J Beaty, Windermere. Dairy heifers sold to 139p/kg (£785) from JM Barton & Son, Lupton. More cull cows can easily be sold with buyers ringside competing for all types, we also have enquiries for prime cattle.

Anniversary Show & Sale of Prime Pigs & Prime Hoggs - Tuesday 5th February Record Entry of Pigs at NWA J36 Anniversary Sale The Anniversary show of prime pigs saw 10 pairs put before the judge, Mr W Buckle, Kirkby Stephen who awarded the first prize rosette to B Harrison, Windermere showing a pair of 100kg Pietrain x which later sold for £132 to the judge. Vendors must be complimented on the quality of pigs, with pigs regularly £100 (100-120p/kg). Heavy weight pigs sold to £110 from W Stamper with buyers showing caution towards boars and leaner under finished pigs. Several cull sows were forward with the heaviest sorts selling to £85 with others £60 - £75, leaner sows were £45 - £58. Store pigs saw the best easily sold with white gilts selling to £68 from M Hall, Wigton followed by a pen of 12 Pietrain x from K Sweeting, Ulverston achieving £62. Well-bred white stores generally were £38 - £50 with coloured sorts £28 £38 depending on breed and quality. A nice entry of weaners saw a top price of £40 achieved for Gloucester Old Spot x gilts from G Renney, Dearham with Tamworths selling at £30 from J Handley, Whinfell. Weaners were generally £20 - £30 with only the youngest and smallest less. The weekly sale of Prime Hoggs, which included the Anniversary Show, saw a smaller entry of hoggs forward with reports of many markets being slightly easier this week, but our trade remained strong with an overall market average of 193p/kg and an SQQ of 200p/kg. The pre-sale was judged by Morgan Helliwell, Lancashire who we thank for his time and expertise. Thanks must also go to our sponsors Mole Country Stores and representative Amy Harrison and Higginsons of Grange for their continued support. The Championship rosette was awarded to BJ Bowness, Kendal with a pair of Beltexs weighing 43kg. These went on to sell at £170 or 395p/kg, purchased by Higginsons of Grange, who also purchased the Reserve Champion. These were consigned by Alistair and Bradley Thompson, Selside this pair of Beltex hoggs weighed 42kg sold for £116 or 276p/kg. Beltex hoggs from the same home sold to £113 or 262p/kg. A special thank you goes to all the vendors who took part in the show. Once again, handy weight hoggs were in strongest demand and easily sold with 32kg to 39kg averaging 202p/kg and 39kg to 45kg averaging 200p/kg. The trade for heavy weight hoggs was were a few pound sharper this week with heavy weights topping at £104 for Texels from AG Butler, Hambleton, with plenty selling into the nineties. Best conformation Beltex hoggs sold between 220p/kg and 240p/kg regular way. Hill bred hoggs sold to a top of £96 for Cheviots from HR & KA Hodgson, Barbon. Mules topped at £87 from AG Butler, Hambleton with plenty of pens of Mules selling into the early eighties. All Mule hoggs forward averaged £77.91. Horned hoggs saw the winning pen of Rough Fells sell to £83 from Amy Harrison, Kentmere. Swaledale sold to £79, twice, from JS & S Atkinson, Scorton.

There was a larger entry of Cast Sheep forward today selling to another good trade in which more could have easily of been sold. Leading the way of the 655 sheep forward today was Texel ewes from R & E Ladds, Kendal selling to £129. This was closely followed by £121 for Texel ewes from J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston. Suffolk ewes sold to a top of £112 from E Needham, Stainton. Plenty of heavy weight Continental ewes sold in excess of the £100 mark. Leicester ewes sold to a top of £105 from JS & S Atkinson, Scorton. There was plenty of pens of first cross ewes selling into the nineties. Mule ewes topped at £79 from J & O Galbraith, Endmoor with numerous pens of heavy weight, fit Mule ewes easily selling into the seventies. Horned ewes sold to another sharp trade with Rough Fells topping at £64 from GC & G Taylor, Crook with other fit Rough Fells easily selling in the fifties.
