J36 Christmas Show & Sale of Calves & Store Cattle Thursday 7th December

Centre Record for Calves Broken at J36 The great annual Christmas show and sale of Calves had the largest entry seen for some time, with over 100 forward for the sale. The sale created plenty of interest with the busiest ringside of buyers, ensuring all calves were well sold.

It was great to have a large number of calves forward for the pre-sale show and a special thanks go to the vendors for their efforts for getting their calves here for 9.30am. Thanks must also go to our sponsor BB Dairy Ltd, James Bainbridge for his presence at the sale today and our judge John Ellis. The championship and reserve championship rosettes were awarded to V & EJ Chadwick & Sons, Sowerby Lodge, Preston. The champion was a stylish British Blue Heifer, which was much admired and created a lot of interest at sale time, sold to a centre record of £510 to Ian Dixon, Low Newton. The reserve champion a British Blue Bull calf sold to £480 to JBL & I Ellis, New Hutton.

There was a buoyant trade throughout that saw other British Blue Bull calves sell to £415 from B Mallinson & Son, Ravens Lodge and other heifers sold to £350 from HJ Robinson & Son, Elm Tree Farm. Plenty of one month old Beef calves sold in the early three hundreds.

A very young entry of Black and Whites, with a shortage of good rearing calves saw rearing calf buyers leaving empty handed. Black and white calves sold to a top of £90 from GR Park & Sons, Low Deepslack.

An entry of stirks today saw summer born Hereford bulls sell to £570 with early autumn born Angus bulls sell to £470 all from RJ & J Gardner of Natland Mill Beck Farm.

The was an entry of 50 Store Cattle forward for the sale, with the trade being in line with other auction marts, with buyers cautious of middle range store cattle due to current forage situations. Thanks go to today’s judge Raymond Matterson of Bootle, who awarded the Champion rosette to a Limousin steer from E & S Bower, Burney End. Best steers were selling in excess of £1000.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 8th December The Annual Christmas Show and Sale of Store Cattle at Lancaster had a catalogued entry of 274 for the sale. The judging was in the capable hands of Dan Nightingale of Great Eccleston, who awarded the Championship Rosette to a pair of Limousin Bullocks from DE & SM Moorhouse of Natland, winning the Tom Owen Memorial Trophy for the third year in succession. Thanks must go to our vendors and buyers for their continued support throughout the year.

The day’s trade topped at £1,560 for the Champion Bullocks with a pair of Charolais bullocks from the same home selling to £1520. There was a number of top quality continental bullocks selling in excess of £1400. Limousin Heifers sold to £1320 from CD & HL Mason of Caton.

There is always plenty of interest in native bred cattle, topping today at £1310 for a pair of Aberdeen Angus Bullocks from DW & NM Alderson of Middleton. All classes of cattle today sold to a sharper trade.

There was a slightly smaller entry of just under 100 cows forward today, selling to a better trade than expected. The trade was far ahead of many local centres with vendors strongly urged to take advantage of the full ringside of buyers at Lancaster. There was an overall market average of 107p/kg achieved.

Topping the day’s trade was a Limousin Cow selling to 167.5p/kg from JA & J Harper of Killington. It was great to have a number of cows selling in excess of £1000 with Limousin Cows selling to £1269 from Jim Clark of Preston.

Black and White Heifers sold to 161.5p/kg or £1004 from H Wright & Son of Helsington. Black and White cows sold to 119.5p/kg from JR & A Thornton of Coventry Farm.

The Annual Christmas Show and Sale of Calves had a larger entry forward with some excellent conformation calves on offer.

The pre-sale judging was in the hands of Mark Burton of County Durham who had a great entry of calves put before him. The championship rosette was awarded to David and Eileen Wallbank of Tills Farm with their Champion British Blue bull selling to £440 and the reserve champion from the same good home sold to £400.

Aberdeen Angus Bull Calves sold to a top of £370 from JK & B Birkett & Son of White Lund Farm. The was an abundance of calves selling in the three hundreds.

Lancaster Sale Reports There was more interest in Dairy Bull Calves today with a Montbeliarde from JK & B Birkett & Son of White Lund Farm selling to £260 and black and whites topping at £140 from G & ME Woodhouse & Son of Boldens Farm, other best black and white rearing calves sold around the £120 mark. All Friesian Bull Calves sold to a market average of £74.

A small number of stirks on offer today from Kirkby & Longworth of Dunnerdale saw Aberdeen Angus Bullocks at 4 months old top at £455 and British Blue and Simmental Bullocks of the same age sold to £440.

Monday 11th December There were over 600 Prime Lambs forward this week selling to a market average of 170p/kg, the trade being slightly easier on the week.

Good quality and well-fleshed lambs were in strong demand and good to sell.

The trade topped at £97.50 from JK & BE Townley of Mearsbeck or 217p/kg, with plenty of good confirmation Texel lambs selling into the 190’s. Heavy weight Texel lambs topped at £90 from Andrew Butler of Hambleton. There were more hill lambs on offer this week with 45kg Mules selling to £76 from JS & S Atkinson of Sykes Farm with Mules often selling in the region of £30 over their weight. Swaledale lambs sold to £69 from KJ & KM Curwen of Marshaw farm.

The trade was slightly less for cast sheep today, with all buyers present looking for ewes but large numbers out nationally last week lead to slightly less demand. Texel ewes sold to a top of £74 from J Bargh and Son of North Farm with Mule ewes selling to a top of £66 from PW & DW Roskell of Springfield House. Horned ewes topped at £44 from WM Pye of Tarnwater.

Monthly Sale of Dairy Cattle - Monday 11th December The Christmas show and sale of Dairy cattle had a smaller entry forward than entered due to the weather and other unforeseen circumstances. There was a buoyant trade enjoyed throughout with all heifers forward going to new homes.

The pre-sale show was judged by Richard Frankland and Thomas Moorhouse of Rathmell, Settle who we thank for their time and expertise. The championship rosette was awarded to the Inman Family of Strickland Hillm, Witherslack with a second calved cow, Witherslack Airintake Eclipse, giving 46litres selling to £2000 going home with the judge. The reserve championship was awarded to MJ & H Atkinson of the Wyresdale herd with Wyresdale Sammy Monica 197 forward only 10 days calved selling for £1,780.

The monthly consignment from the Drinkall Bros of Catshaw farm sold to a top of £2,000 for one of the renowned Pennine Poppy number 1285 of this famous family yielding 29 litres.

The sale sold to an overall market average of £1692.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 7th December Continued The annual Christmas show and sale of Dairy Cattle at J36 had a handful forward for the sale, but they created plenty of interest attracting many buyers and on lookers and many more could have easily been sold to the advantage of the vendor. Our thanks must go to our judges today Richard and Chris Ladds of Benson Hall for giving up their time and expertise.

The pre-sale champion was awarded to JM Barton & Son, Lupton Hall, Kirkby Lonsdale with a second calved cow yielding 45litres, selling for £2200 to the pre-sale judges.

A couple of heifers forward BW & M Haygarth, Manor Farm with both yielding 26litres selling to £1650 and £1600.

Tuesday 12th December The monthly sale of Pigs at J36 had an entry of 159 forward. The sale also included the Christmas show of Prime Pigs and out thanks must go to our judge Ben Holland and sponsor Norjac. The champion rosette, for the best pair of prime pigs, was awarded to PK & R Woof, Storth End, Stainton which later went onto sell for £175 to the judge. There was a bumper entry of Prime pigs forward which sold to a competitive trade and Prime Pigs sold to an average over £100.

Weaners topped at £30 from David Willison for a pen of 11. A very mixed show of Store Pigs topped at £48 for a pen of coloured stores from AJ & EJ Platt.

The next sale pigs will be on Tuesday 9th January.

There was a slightly smaller entry of Prime Lambs this week at J36, but they sold to a sharper trade. Heavy weight lambs were very good to sell topping at £98.50 for Texel Lambs from TE, JS & SA Carruthers, Red Scar for 58kg lambs. Beltex lambs sold a premium, topping at 230p/kg from JG Harryman, Hawkshead, with all Beltex Lambs averaging 208p/kg. Texel lambs were also selling to an advantage with TR Prickett, Hutton Roof selling lambs to £98.

There was an improved trade for Horned lambs in the market today, topping at £67 for a pen Swaledales from JF & AW Sutton, Nether House Farm.

Mules saw a top price of £82.50 achieved from F & SA Edmondson, Netherhouses Farm with others selling to £81.50 from WJ & LA Barker, Brown Edge.
