Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Prime Lambs, Prime Hoggs & Cast Sheep. Monday 9th June 2025.

PRIME LAMBS (498)

Those that drew lambs were duly rewarded, with buyers keen to fill existing orders and start new ones. Well bred and fed lambs were 360p/kg to 380p/kg, topping at 433p/kg from WA&LM Jenkinson, Stalmine with others to 420p/kg from KA Purtill, Wigan. Several pens of lighter weights lambs coming forward, selling to 366p/kg from D Wightman, Burton in Kendal. Topping the market today selling several pens of Texel cross at £174 was D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Closely followed by KA Purtill, Wigan and A&E Clarkson, Cockerham achieved £172. Standard weigh in specification lambs were in the keenest demand, with light weight selling to £139. An overall market average of 339p/kg and SQQ of 342p/kg was achieved got all sold.

Just a handful of end of season hoggs forward selling to a top price of 329p/kg for a Texel cross from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe and £140 for Cheviots from the Isle of Man.

No let up in the trade for all classes and types of cull sheep. Better continentals were £195 and £230, topping at £240 was WA&LM Jenkinson, Stalmine with mediums £170 to £190. Mules peaked at £184 from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe with another stronger end ewes £165 to £180, and the next draw down £140 to £160. Hill ewes sold to £170 for Cheviots.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Pigs, Prime Lambs, Prime Hoggs, Cast Sheep & Sheep with Lambs at Foot, Tuesday 10th June 2025.

Pigs

A good buzz down the pig alley this morning, with trade showing a slight increase on last sale.

Prime pigs sold to £230 for a pair of gilts from local producer Peter Woof, Stainton. A trio sold to £205 from J&JR Stott, Kingsland which achieved the days top pence per kilo at 241p/kg.

Boars sold to £185 from W Stamper, Chipping with the best of the steers achieving £142 from DA&AM Chalmers, Appleby. Weaners perhaps the trade of the day, selling to £100 for five from M Berry, Endmoor with others to £90 from HA Sawrey, Ulverston.

Sheep with Lambs at Foot

Trade holding up as the season winds down.

A tidy show of ewe and hogg families, consisting mainly of Mule hoggs, all achieving £285.

Texel cross ewes with Texel lambs reached £260 from Messrs Metcalfe, Ravenstonedale. The same vendor topped the hill sheep section with a pen of Swaledale ewes with Mule and Texel lambs making £200.

Prime Lambs

Lots of demand for lambs at Junction 36. Numbers of spring lambs starting to come forward now, however a lot more are required to meet the current demand on a Tuesday.

Suffolks sold to a top of 400p/kg from D&J Woof, Sedbergh while Texels hit £196 per head from J&JR Stott, Crosscrake. Once again, the lighter end of springers attracted the most attention ringside, however heavier lambs were noticeably dearer on the week again. 39kg Texels from HR Holmes, Inskip sold to £152 or 389.7p/kg for a pen of four. Lighter Texels from D&J Woof, Sedbergh sold to just shy of this at 387.1p/kg. 44kg lambs from E Dodgson, Kendal soared to £181 for good quality sheep, with the same home then selling 47kg lambs to £181 or 385.1p/kg.

An overall market average of 352p/kg was achieved, with lambs ranging from 29kg to 60kgs. More lambs are wanted on a weekly basis here at Junction 36 to match buyers appetite. Please contact Joel McGarva on 07920009097 for any enquiries.

Prime Hoggs

Less hoggs around today, however an improved trade was achieved all round. An overall average of 310p/kg and SQQ of 325p/kg was welcomed for vendors selling today. Handy weight Cheviots topped at 352p/kg from Stockdale Farms, Sedbergh. A pen of eight Texels, again at handy weights, sold to just shy of this at 351.3p/kg. Dutch Spotted hoggs topped at £175 from J&H Bland & Son, Levens.

Next weeks sale of prime sheep starts at the usual time of 1pm, with the ballot to be drawn at 12 noon.

As to be expected less forward this week, no let up on trade with all buyers keen to fill orders. A handful of pure ewes forward selling to £245 for Suffolks from JH Towers & Sons, Texels to £238 from JT&A Armistead, £230 E Dodgson. Other heavier and better end £190 - £220, with first cross £180 - £210. Mules sold to £190 from KA Purtill with other stronger Mules £170-£185, mediums £148-£160 with the leaner end £125-£140. Kill ewes sold to £154 from Cheviots, £142 Rough Fells, £130 Swaledales, mediums £98-£105 with the smaller and leaner end generally £55-£70 with some less at realisation. Heavy rams sold to £240 for Hampshires from P&H Clough with Texels £235 from RJ&R Holden, mediums £180-£210. Hill rams to £225 for Cheviots from MW&M Hodgson and Rough Fells £170 from BJ Bainbridge.

Calves

With Will away pool side, rostrum duties were placed upon Matthew Probert. There was no let up in trade with plenty of farmer buyers ring side today. Bull calves sold to a top of £860 for an Aberdeen Angus cross from TW & CA Long, Ulverston. Closely followed by another Aberdeen Angus at £840 from SW&K Metcalfe & Son, Whittington. The best of the rearing bull calves sold to £760 on two occasions for British Blue cross from A Pickthall, New Hutton with others at £730 from HJ Robinson, Preston Patrick and Limousin to £670 from Langley Park, Millom. Others were generally £580 to £640. A large number of native sired rearing calves saw the best sell to £620 for Hereford cross from Lawkland Hall Farm, Lawkland who sold others at £600 and regularly £570 to £590, younger native sired bull calves were £380 to £460.

Just a handful of dairy bulls today saw the strongest black and whites to £390 from SW&K Metcalfe & Son, Whittington with others regularly £270 to £340. An eye catching month old Fleckvieh from RG&JA Clark, Endmoor sell at £320.

Heifer calves saw a keen interest from farmer buyers looking to secure suckler replacement. The strongest selling to £750 for Charolais cross from CR Dickinson, Thurnham with Limousin £720 from CM&CS Chapplehow, Penrith and Hereford cross £600 Lawkland Hall Farm, Lawkland. The better end of the young rearing heifers £470 to £550, with mediums £360 to £420.

Another fast and competitive trade for all classes and types of stirks, with buyers eager to secure replacement stock. Steers sold to a top price of £1420 for an Aberdeen Angus from S Thompson, Flookburgh. A pair of 9 month old Limousin cross from PJ Holt, Blackpool achieved £1380, with others at £1370 for British Blue cross from MW & MR Black, Staveley and Simmental from G GU & D Swarbrick, Meathop. Other younger suckler bred steers (7-9 month old) were generally £1000 to £1200. A ring full of 9-11 month old black and white from Bellart Howe Farm, Grange Over Sands sold at £900. Younger dairy bred steers sold to £770 for 5 month old Aberdeen Angus cross from Messrs Young, Lindal. Heifer stirks were abundant in number today, selling to £1320 for Aberdeen Angus and Beef Shorthorn cross from MT Howarth, Field Broughton. Nice suckler bred 9-10 month olds sold to £1230 from MW &M Black, Staveley with Aberdeen Angus cross to £1220 from S Thompson, Flookburgh. First cross heifers sold to £1090 for a 10 month old Aberdeen Angus cross from Bellart Howe, Grange Over Sands. Other younger dairy bred heifer sold to £790 for 5 month old Charolais cross from CM&CL Bowe, Penrith who also sold a ring full of 6 month old Aberdeen Angus cross at £730.

A handful of bull stirks forward sold to £1280 for a four month old Charolais cross from R&BJ Cleasby, Boughton in Furness with RC Wharton & Son, Appleby selling 8 month old Limousin cross at £1160 and five month old British Blue cross £1130. Five other month olds achieved £1110 from RJ&J Gardner, Kendal.

A large number of stirks forward today were unentered, it is to the vendors advantage to enter stirks for the catalogue, to assist with canvassing buyers and assist with sale day logistics. The next sale of stirks is Thursday 26th, catalogue entries close at 5pm on Wednesday 18th June.

Store Cattle

Red Hot Ring: Store cattle trade surges at J36

Spirited bidding from the offset saw a tremendous trade throughout. Prices for many classes of cattle up notably on the fortnight. Number of cattle also up significantly for all selections compared with the same day last year. Messrs D Jackson sold a pair of Shorthorn bullocks to £2160. A Hereford bullock from J L Bird also sold for £2160. A slightly younger pair of bullocks from JA Airey made £2000. J M Haddow topped the heifer trade today with a pen of 3 Blondes making £2110 and a pen of 4 Charolais from the same good home making £2000 per head. More numbers could quite easily have been sold on the day with plenty of buyers going home empty handed. The sale concluded with a late entry of dairy bulling heifers from RH&RA Fawcett, which attracted wide spread buyer interest, selling to a top of £1740 with others at £1700. Date for your diary; Monday 14th July - special collective dairy sale at NWA J36 to include the sale of the milk portion on behalf of WB Winder, Broughton in Furness. Anticipated entry 120 to 150 head. Next store cattle sale is in two week’s time.

Beef Breeding Cattle

Beefy Business: Cow & Calf trade gets a moo-ving boost.

Breeders kicked off in style with a 21-month-old Charolais bull selling to £6200, this was from Messrs JE Gaunt who then sold a younger one for £4800. A Limousin heifer with a 2-month-old Limousin calf at foot fetched £4300 from Messrs EJ Hodgson. A Limousin again with a 2 month old fetched £4200 this time from J Woodburn & Partners. The same home then sold another good outfit for £3800. In calf heifers topped at £2200 from G&C Rylands while bulling heifers hit £2400 for a cracker from DE&SM Moorhouse. Older 5th & 6th calvers hit £3200 from A Hodgson and £3100 again from Messrs Rylands. Our mid summer sale of beef breeding cattle will be on Thursday 10th July, to include the dispersal of 15 in calf and cows with calves at foot from a local farm. Additional entries welcomed.

OTM / Cull Cows

An animated ring side of buyers saw all cull cows today selling to a market average of 255p/kg, with all classes and types keenly competed for. The strongest beef cows sold to 299.5p/kg for a Limousin cross from JT Stables, Grange Over Sands. Others achieved 289.5p/kg again from JT Stables, J Norman, Burton in Kendal, N Cooper & Son, Broughton in Furness and S Whitehead, Middleton. Calves

Trade maintained prices of recent months with all buyers keen to secure calves of all classes and types. Best rearing bull calves sold to £910 for a Limousin x from D & M Foster closely followed by a Charolais x from Wallbank Farms selling to £900. Other stronger bull calves £740-£880 and mediums to £500-£620. Native sire bulls sold to £780 for Herefords x from D & M Foster with Aberdeen Angus x to £720 from C & J Smith. Dairy bulls were extremely good to sell with 8-week-old British Friesian selling to £450 from JR Newsham with others regularly £340-£400. Only a handful of heifer calves forward with the best to £740 for British Blue x from JP & C Robson with others generally £580-£640 and younger month old to £510 for Limousin x from D & K Haworth.

Just a handful of stirks today selling to £930 for British Blue x 6-month-old steers and heifers to £900 all from D & J Hay.

A few less about today as farmers take advantage of the dry with getting field work done, all cast cattle forward averaged 265p/kg. The best beef cows sold to 294p/kg for a Limousin from M&L Preece, Kirkby Lonsdale with others 289p/kg for another Limousin from PJ Holt, Blackpool. Other beef cows were generally 265p/kg to 280p/kg, top grossing being a British Blue cross from M&L Preece, Kirkby Lonsdale at £2042.

The best dairy sold to 279p/kg for black and whites from both MJ Fell, Whittington and Kelsall and Wood, Scotforth. Others were regularly 260p/kg to 275p/kg, with parlour types 230p/kg to 250p/kg and only the lightest and leanest less. Top grossing dairy cow was a black and white from MJ Fell, Whittington at £2199.

OTM heifers sold to 334p/kg and £2110 for an Aberdeen Angus cross from JD EM JA Atkinson, Kendal. Dairy heifers sold to 324p/kg for black and whites from WN&D Smith, Cockerham and £2108 from AT Burrow & Son, Gressingham.

Just a handful of OTM beef steers forward selling 384p/kg for a Limousin from EJ Ward, Nether Kellet and Aberdeen Angus cross selling to £2271 from JD EM JA Atkinson, Kendal.
