Lancaster Christmas Show & Sale of Calves & Store Cattle Friday 7th December The annual Christmas show and sale of Calves at Lancaster had a bumper entry of over 100 forward. The pre-sale show was judged by John Townson of Rishton, whom we thank for his time and expertise. A great entry of calves were put forward to cast his eye over. The Championship was awarded to David and Eileen Wallbank of Over Wyresdale with their British Blue bull which went onto sell for £430, purchased by the judge.

British Blue bull calves from the same good home were awarded second and third place, respectively, and sold for £435 and £395. The Reserve Championship was awarded to David and Eileen Wallbank for a British Blue heifer selling to £350. A good entry of black and white calves saw first prize awarded to WN and D Smith and Sons of Cockerham which sold for £110.

The entry of calves and stirks saw a buoyant trade throughout the sale with a busy ringside of buyers, looking for all types of calves. Topping the trade this week was a consignment of British Blue calves from J & G Thornley of Kirkham who sold bulls to £475, £470 and £465, with heifers from the same good home selling to £400. Plenty of strong British Blue calves sold around the £400 mark with British Blue bulls averaging £358 for all forward. Angus bull calves from DR & E Milner, Claughton on Brock sold to a top of £345. Native bred heifer calves sold to a slightly sharper trade with Angus heifers selling to £215 from Wallbank Farms of Over wyresdale. Plenty of strong black and white calves sold towards the £100 mark, topping at £110 for the first prize calf from WN & D Smith of Cockerham.

There was a handful of stirks on offer this week, all five to six month old black and white bulls that sold to a top of £175 from TE & M Kidd of Quernmore.

The annual Christmas show and sale of Store Cattle at Lancaster had an entry of 280 forward. The pre-sale judging was in the hands of David Whaite, Blackpool who had some impressive pairs of bullocks to cast his eyes over. The Championship pair of bullocks was awarded to DE & SM Moorhouse of Natland, with an impressive pair of Limousins, these were both purchased out of J36 Rural Auction Centre. They were awarded the Tom Owen Memorial trophy and later went onto sell for £1,360, which was the day’s top price. British Blue bullocks sold to a top of £1,340 from R & DM Rossall and Son of Pilling with Angus bullocks topping at £1290 from the same home.

The heifer trade was topped at £1330 with an Angus from G Atkinson and Son of Quernmore Park. There was still plenty of strong, short keep cattle selling around the £1,200 mark. Dairy bred bullocks sold to a top of £1,120 from BL & D Banks of Pilling with black and whites selling to £930 J & H Bland of Levens.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 7th December Continued There was an entry of 97 Cast Cows and OTM Cattle forward today, which saw beef cows selling to a sharper trade and black and whites selling to a very similar trade. The trade was topped by a 31 month old Limousin heifer from JD, EM & JA Atkinson, Kendal selling to 191.5p/ kg. Beef cows sold to a top of 159.5p/kg from AR & BJ Thompson of Selside with a British Blue cow selling to the day’s top price of £1,268.

Black and white heifers sold to a top of £1,258 from J & M Sanderson of Kirkham. There was an overall market average of 99p/kg.

Monday 10th December The weekly sale of Prime Lambs had a smaller entry this week, following on from the Christmas show last week. The trade remains firm at Lancaster with an overall market average of 174p/kg and an SQQ average of 177p/kg. Lambs sold to a top of £89 for Texels from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof with other Texels to £88 from H Birkett & Son, Overton. Texel lambs sold to a top of 202p/kg from PM & ST Entwistle, Abbeystead, with plenty of good conformation lambs selling around the 195p/kg mark.

There was more hill bred lambs on the market today that saw Cheviots sell to £80 from P Prickett, Hutton Roof and £79 from KM & KJ Curwen, Abbeystead. Mule lambs sold to a top of £76 four times from M Huddleston, Wray, FK & F Woodhosue, Scorton, A & J Rhodes, Ellel and M & L Preece, Kirkby Lonsdale.

There was a similar number of Cast Ewes forward today selling to a continued trade which saw Texel ewes top at £70 from CJ Metcalfe, Ingleton, Mules to £57 from CF Hargreaves, Overton with others to £56 from CJ Metcalfe.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 6th November The fortnightly sale of Store Lambs had an entry of 2,149 selling to a strong trade with Prime Lambs improving this week. A busy ring of buyers ensured that all specifications of lambs were eagerly bid for with buyers leaving short of lambs they required and more could have been sold to the advantage of vendors. Beltex lambs were in plenty of demand topping at £94 from Ian Richardson of Catforth with others selling to £80 from BJ Bowness of Kendal; all Beltex lambs forward averaging in the seventies. Texel lambs sold to £79 from PW Clarke of Crosthwaite and WR Clarke and Partners of Carnforth. There was plenty of pens of short-term Continental lambs selling easily in excess of £70 with many consignments averaging over £70. Mule lambs sold to a top of £74 from RI Dixon of Low Newton with plenty of pens of strong Mule lambs selling into the sixties.

There were more hill lambs on offer this week selling to equally as strong a trade. Swaledale lambs saw strong lambs often selling into the forties topping at £45.50 from PW Clarke of Crosthwaite. Herdwick cross lambs topped at £66 from WR Clarke and Partners of Carnforth with pures selling to £43 from G Armstrong of Nibthwaite. Cheviot lambs - always good too sell - sold to £61 from DH Holme of Raisbeck.

Tuesday 11th December - Christmas Show of Pigs The Christmas Show for Prime Pigs saw 8 pairs forward for judging which was undertaken by Mr D Morland, Tebay. The first prize rosette was awarded to a pair of Pietrain x Saddleback gilts from J Stott, Stainton which later sold for a final bid of £140 to Browns Quality Meats, Ulverston. The 2nd prize pair of gilts were presented by P Crayston, Ulverston with the 3rd prize pair from N J Wilkinson, Barrow in Furness. The top price of 165p/kg was achieved for the first prize winners with other well-finished pigs 95p/kg to125p/kg, lighter weight prime pigs were 80p/kg to 90p/kg. Buyers were keenest for gilts and hogs with boars a more selective trade.

Sows sold to £90 from D Baldwin, others £40 to £60. Store pigs sold to £50 for Pietrain x gilts from AJ & EJ Platt with weaners to £34 for Pietrain x from S Pheonix, Preston. Other younger stores were £20 to £35.

There was a larger entry of 1300 Prime Lambs forward today which sold to a continued strong trade. There was an overall market average of 178p/kg with an SQQ of 184p/kg. Plenty of good quality conformation lambs sold in excess of 200p/kg. These twice topped at 228p/kg from SP Pease, Underley coming to £103 a head. This was closely followed by 227p/kg for Beltex from JG Harryman, Hawkshead who’s consignment topped at £95.50. Top price per head was £110.50 from SP Pease for a Beltex. Charollais lambs sold to a top of £88.50 from Ms Fell, Barrow-in-Furness. It was great to have plenty of lambs selling in the eighties. Suffolk lambs twice topped at £84 from JA & LR Wilson, Millom. Hill bred lambs saw Cheviots sell to a top of £79 from W, L & F Richards, Kirkby-in-Furness. Mules sold to a top of £76.50 from JS & S Atkinson, Scorton. Horned lambs today saw 39kg Dalesbreds from BD Gill, Ingleton sell to £70 with 36kg Dalesbreds selling to £68.50 with 36kg Swaledale lambs selling to £61.50 from JA Bennet, Long Sleddale.

North West Auctions There was a slightly smaller entry of 547 Cast Ewes forward this week selling to a very similar trade. The trade was topped today at £112 for Texel cast rams. Texel ewes sold to a top of £98 from R & E Ladds, Scalthwaiterigg.

Suffolk ewes twice sold to £98 from Mrs EE Barton, Pennington and Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with Leicester tups topping at £97 from D & J & A Freeman, Troutbeck. There was plenty of heavy weight sheep selling in the mid-eighties to early nineties. Mule ewes sold to a top of £75 from Drinkall Bros with others selling to £73 from E & A Thompson, New Hutton with more pens of Mule ewes selling into the sixties this week. Hill bred ewes saw Cheviot ewes sell to a top of £56 from SP Pease, Underley. Swaledale ewes topped at £54 from DJ Clarke, Underbarrow with plenty of pens of big, fit, well-fleshed horned ewes selling in to the forties.
