Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 7th August A busy day at NWA Lancaster with Store Bullocks averaging £1052, Store Heifers average £995.

Blue Bull Calves averaging £407 and Blue Heifers averaging £382.

A fantastic show of strong Store Cattle forward this morning at Lancaster. The downturn in current deadweight prices, along with a few missing buyers due to harvest commitments, just took the edge off the high prices seen over the last few weeks. Trade topped at £1370 for an Angus and Charolais bullock from M Allen, Yealand. Limousins bullocks sold to £1310 for a trio from Jim Whitworth, Bolton le Sands. A run of 19 smart stores form John Whitfeild, Cowan Bridge sold to £1290 for 5 Angus Bullocks, with another four close behind at £1280. Heifers sold to a top of £1240 for a single British Blue from J & M Cottom, Hill Top. Native bred heifers to £1200 from Chris Hewitt of Forton. Heavy weight Friesians sold to £1150 from J Lamb, Old Glasson.

A middling show of Cast Cows forward, with a real shortage of meaty cows today at Lancaster. Numbers low, with only 45 put before a ringside of buyers.

Trade topped at 159.5ppk for an OTM Heifer from I & ME Askew, New Hutton and also from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale, with a Friesian Heifer, which also realised the top price per head, at just shy of £1050. Black and White cows sold to a top of 144.5ppk from GB & EA Metcalf & Son, Mansergh. Best sorts of dairy cows forward today regularly between 112-120ppk.

A bigger entry of Calves than seen over the last few weeks, with 71 passing through the ring. The vast majority being black and whites, selling to a top of £215 for a 15 week old from Ken Kelsall, Brown Brook. Younger strong calves sold between £130-£165. Montbelliardes from TD & V Whitaker sold to £390.

Continental calves in strong demand, with Blue bulls selling to £450 from regular vendor Steven Robinson, Blue bulls averaged £407. Blue heifers sold to £430 from TD & V Whitaker, Winmarleigh with all Blue Heifers averaging £382. Both considerably dearer than other local centres. Limousins sold to £410 for heifers again from S & IA Robinson. Stirks to £600 for a 7month old Blue Bull from A Shepherd. More calves needed to meet buyers demand here at Lancaster.

The July Dugdale Calf Competition was a tie, with both TE & M Kidd, Quernmore and HJ Robinson & Son, Kendal selling Blue Bulls to £390, both purchased by JB, L & I Ellis.

Monday 10th August A nice entry of 1315 Spring Lambs this morning at Lancaster. Trade sharper than last week, averaging 151.2ppk, 6ppk up on the week. Top price per kilo was achieved on two occasions of 174ppk, firstly from Chris Alty, Warton with 40kg Texels, followed by Linda Dawson, Dolphinholme, with 34kg Texels. Majority of well fleshed Texel lambs, 40-44kg achieved £20-£24 above their weight. Suffolks sold to a top of £72 for heavy weights from J Singleton, Great Eccleston and 45kg Suffolks to £67 from MJ Waller, Killingon. Mashams sold to a top of £68 for a pen of 8 46kg lambs from DC Miller, Claughton on Brock. Mules sold to £65.50 at 50kg from D France. Standard weight mules from B & SE Carter at 44kg realised £64.

A good entry of 135 Cast Ewes and Tups this morning with all buyers eagerly bidding. Trade topped at £118 for a pair of big Suffolk ewes from TA Blair, Thornton. Texels sold to £93 from P Cummings, Holme. Mules sold to a top of £85 for a pair from R Collinge & Son, Newton with others to £78 from K & DE Woodhouse, Ellel. Mules averaged £67/head.

Horned sheep sold to a top of £64 for 6 swale ewes from M & L Preece, High House. Swale tups to £76 from JA & MM Taylor, Lots House. Overall average of £67 for all cast sheep forward.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 6th August The weekly sale of Calves and Stirks had an entry of 59 forward. Good beef calves continue to sell in excess of £400 but the edge was slightly off the strong trades which have been enjoyed at J36 over past weeks. J36 continues to be the place to sell beef calves as two month old British Blue bulls sold to £450 from V & EJ Chadwick & Sons of St Michaels with British Blue Heifers to £440 from Messrs Sowerby of Appleby. Plenty of beef calves still reaching £400 and no beef calves selling under £300. Black and Whites a similar trade to that of previous weeks but weanlings were slightly back. Better rearing types sold between £120 and £155 with younger calves between £90 and £105. Black & Whites averaged £91.

Store Cattle sold to a top price of £1080 for Lim x steers from DJ Clarke with heifers £1000 for Lim x from J Alderson & Son. An entry of predominantly younger cattle saw 9 month old steers sell to £820 and heifers £780. Native bred cattle sold to £870 for British White steers with 8 month old Aberdeen Angus steers £685 and Hereford heifers also £685.

Cast / OTM Cattle sold to a top price 139 p/kg for a Lim x cow from JM Case & Son and then a British Blue x from RA & C Benson. Dairy cows peaked at 121p/kg from M Wilson. Top per head was £930 for a British Blue cow from RA & C Benson with dairy cows £864 from Mason/Birkland Barrow. An overall market average of 108p/kg archived with over half the entry being dairy cows.

The weekly sale of Store Lambs saw a top price of £57 for Texel x from TJ Beaty with others £55 from JH Strickland, Suffoks £54 from JR Bell. Medium lambs generally £48 - £51 with smallest long keep lambs £35 - £42. Please ensure that Ram Lambs are declared at time of sale.

Tuesday 11th The monthly sale of Pigs saw several new customers in attendance with a wide variety of pigs once again on offer. Best prime pigs sold to £125 from AJ Horn with others £100-£112. Store pigs sold to £65 for Pietrain Cross from Rourke Farms with others £48-£62. Very few weaners forward selling to £18 for younger sorts.

Best Lambs sold to 178p/kg for Texel Cross from J & D Chapman and £75.50 from W Kipling. Most lambs generally £20-£25 over weight averaging 150p/kg, this being ahead of other local centres. Hill lambs sold to £65 (151p/kg) for Mules. Light lambs in short supply with more 32kg-36kg required each week provided they are meated.

The weekly sale of Cast Ewes saw a similar number on offer with just shy of 500 forward. A lot more leaner ewes forward today with a lot less big Continental ewes through the ring. Heavier Continental ewes sold between £83 and £90 topping at £97 from Messrs Boyren of Hill Park. Heavier Mule ewes sold to £72 from J,BL & I Ellis of Hawkrigg End with other meaty Mule ewes selling in the late sixties and lean, plainer sorts in the fifties. Less big fit quality horned ewes forward today. Meatier Swaledale ewes sold to £59 from Fishwick Bros of Middle Sadghyll with fit Swaledales selling between £40 and £47 with plain ewes in the thirties.
