This annual sale once again delivered an exceptional entry of quality rams, with buyers in attendance from far and wide.

Principle prices included:

Su olk shearlings to £3200 from TA Blair.

Su olk lambs to £1600 from S Bolland.

Texel shearlings to £3200 from J Woodburn & Partners.

SUFFOLKS

This year the judging of the Su olks was in the very capable hands of Master Clark Ellwood, Grizebeck who had 2 high quality classes presented before him.

From a class of 13 shearlings the first prize rosette was awarded to TA Blair, Poulton le Fylde which later achieved a sale topping prize of £3200 purchased by the judge. The lamb class also had an entry of 13 forward and saw S Bolland, Bolton Abbey receive the red rosette which later sold for £1400 to a local breeder.

All Su olks forward experienced spirited bidding with other notable shearling prices being £2000, £1800 RA Batty, £1800, £1600 JH Towers & Sons, £1600, £1400 AR

Edmondson, £1500 S Barlow & R Cook, £1400 RA & L Hodgson.

Ram lambs peaked at £1600 from S Bolland who sold others at £1400, £1200, £1000. J Irving sold lambs to £1200 with others at £1000 from C Kenyon and TA Blair.

CHAROLAIS

Charolais rams saw shearlings sell to £700 from JA & R Geldard & Sons with others to £600 from B & A Crane and SC & NC Hodgson with lambs to £500 from S Cumming.

Badger Face Texel shearlings sold to £600 from R&SA Rawsthorne. Dutch Spotted shearlings to £500 from J Stamper and lambs to £680 from KP Dagger. Lleyn shearlings sold to £750 from JA & R Geldard & Sons.

TEXELS

A super entry of Texels were this year judged by Mr J Hoggarth, Ulpha who awarded the first prize rosette to WJ & VJ Case which later sold for £2000. The ram lamb class was won by M Wayne. Buyers were keen to secure Texel rams for both prime lamb and gimmer replacement breeding. Notable prices include J Woodburn & Partners to £3200 & £2000, WJ & VJ Case to £2400, £2200 & £2000, E Woodburn to £1800, HJ & PA Berry to £1600, MW & HE Pedley to £1600, A Williams to £1600, £1500 and S Cunli e to £1500.

CROSSBREDS

An exceptional entry of crossbred rams this year presented before the judge Mr W Sedgley. The first prize shearling rosette was awarded to WM Reed & Sons showing a Texel x Beltex which later sold for £2800. Crossbred tups sold exceptionally well with power and strength at a premium, topping at £2800. Other principal prices include G Sowerby to £2000, £1800, £1700, £1600, RF Towers to £1700, WM Reed & Sons to £1600, WJ & VJ Case to £1600, H Taylor & Partners to £1600, JA & R Geldard & Sons to £1400.

PRIME LAMBS

A smaller number of lambs forward today, as customers juggle with standstills. Those forward saw well finished lambs in keenest demand, with Texel cross to £155 and £154 from J Twigge, Lindale and £151 from H Mason, Lancaster. Other well finished fed lambs were generally £140 to £148, grass finished £128 to £136 and lighter weight under finished lambs £115 to £122. 335p/kg was achieved for Beltex cross from J Twigge, Lindale, with other better end lambs 310p/kg to 325p/kg. Standard lambs were generally 296p/kg to 308p/kg and lighter weight and leaner sorts 270p/kg to 290p/kg, with an overall market average of 295p/kg.

An abundance of ewes today, saw H Mason, Lancaster top the sale with Texels at £195 and £194. The best first cross ewes sold to £176 from J Pinder & Sons, Clitheroe with mediums generally £130 to £145. Mules sold to £150 for a ring full from J Pinder & Sons, Clitheroe. Feeding type Mule ewes were generally £92 to £110. Pure hill ewes sold to £155 for Cheviots and £142 for Teeswaters. A larger number of hard worked horn ewes selling to £74, with others £45 to £52.

PIGS

A smell of crackling in the air at Junction 36, pigs were on fire!

Another strong trade for finished pigs, topping today at £270 x2 both from Gibson & Berry, Endmoor with two crackling Saddleback gilts weighing 103kg. Prime hoggs topped at £245 from P&R Woof. A prime boar which even managed to make the auctioneer look small reached the heights of £200. Smokey bacon sprung to mind! There were more weaners than you could shake a bag of pork scratchings at, with pens full to pick from, they came to a sensible average of £60.47. PRIME LAMBS

Prime lambs hold their own at Junction 36. With numbers up on the previous year, yet again at Junction 36 and trade also holding firm - there is plenty to smile about! Especially farmers selling sheep with good flesh and coverage. Todays overall average was bang on 300p/kg. Lots of interest for fit types, with an extra butcher round the ring today also after that particular article. Leaner sorts proved harder work on the week, and plenty stores around pulling the average back slightly.

Lambs sold to £196 from D Black, Milnthorpe for a single Texel. A further pair of Texels sold for £192 this time from J Gibson, Kendal. A nice run of lambs from HE&RB Taylforth topped at 328.9p/kg for Texels. D&DW Prickett sold three Beltex for 327.5p/kg. Messrs Boyren, Ulverston sold thirty-three Texels in one go for 322p/kg. STORE LAMBS

An entry of 3014 store lambs at Junction 36 sold to levels better than anticipated following the recent drop in prime lamb prices. Quality well bred lambs were easily placed with BR Lawson, Richmond making their debut worthwhile selling pen fulls of

Texel cross lambs to £141 and £139. Also hitting these highs was GM Strong, Penrith selling Blue Texels to £140. Rough Fells reached a staggering £136 from A O’Neill, Sedbergh with a ring full of Su olks to £125 from F Blenkharn, Milnthorpe. Medium keep continentals were regularly £90 to £100, with only long keep lambs for less. Mules again looking well sold topping at £109 for a pen of 40 from RI Dixon, Low Newton with a further 40 at £107 from JA&CA Gibson, Longwell. Hill bred lambs looked a good trade, with long keep Cheviots to £108 from Forest Hall Farms, Selside and £101 from the Isle of Man. Hill bred long keep lambs were generally £72 to £84.

Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale ofCalves, OTM Cattle & Store Cattle. Friday 12th September 2025.

CALVES

Another successful sale of 86 calves today at Lancaster, with a varied selection to choose from. Leading the way was a British Blue bull calf from Hannah Kent at £930, with others from the same good home reaching £780. Another excellent consignment of calves from Lawson Dairy Ltd saw British Blue calves at £900, followed by other Blues at £820. J&G Thornley didn’t disappoint with their usual quality consignment of calves, who had British Blue bulls at £900 and £820, with others following closely by. J&H Towers showed 11 good calves today, with British Blues to £770 and Limousins to £570. Other noted prices included GJ&G Billington to £740, Barbers

Farms £620, Wallbank Farms £740 and JP&C Robson to £590. All classes of calves are required at this popular weekly sale.

STORE CATTLE

Lancasters weekly sale of store cattle saw a catalogue entry of 239 going through the min ring with trade for bigger meaty types showing an improvement on the week, with smaller leaner types showing a slightly more selective trade, as the weather turns to a more autumnal feel.

Good to see D&N Davis, Nateby back at Lancaster with store cattle, their British Blue steers topped the market at £2650. Well farmed Charolais steers from JM Haddow, Milnthorpe sold to £2580. Others steers to break the £2500 barrier included R Townsend, Freckleton at £2550 for a Shorthorn and an Angus steer to the same price from I&ME Askew, New Hutton. Charolais steers from Pilling Hall, Pilling achieved £2500, with JM Haddow continuing his good day selling Simmentals to £2480. Friesian steers from M&JW Staveley, Wray sold to £2150, with other Friesians to £1920 from EW&CR Clegg & Sons, Stalmine. J&H Bland, Levens achieved £1900 for Norwegian Reds and Fleckviehs made the same money from David Preston, Caton. As per normal Aberdeen Angus topped the store heifer section, if you have Aberdeen Angus store cattle to sell, you would be hard pressed to find a better outlet other than Lancaster. FA Nowell, Low Bentham saw his pair of Angus achieve £2180, with others from M&E Forshaw, Longridge at £2120 and RG&B Lewis, Middleton at £2100 for a pen of four. British Blues got away nicely at £2150 from Barker Farms, Carnforth with others at £2100 from R&K Jenkinson, Pilling. Herefords sold to £2100 from J&S Winstanley, Preston. There were a few more dairy bred heifers about today, topping at £1980 for Friesians from D&K Howorth, Hambleton. Others achieved £1780 from M&E Forshaw, Longridge and J&CW Metcalfe, Quernmore.

Overall average today which included a good number of lesser cattle, saw steers average £1925 and heifers £1822.

OTM CATTLE

The weekly sale of OTM cattle saw 82 through the bottom ring, with a very strong trade being up on the week, for a very mixed show of cattle. Topping the trade today both per kilo and per head was AJ&DA Wilkinson, Out Rawcli e with a solid British Blue achieving £3214 or 364.5p/kg. Other beef bred OTM’s from E Dodgson, Kendal sold to £2568 or 334p/kg, this time for a Limousin. Other Limousins from the same home achieved £2300 or 319p/kg. Herefords sold to £2327 or 309p/kg from B&BA Rimmer, Preston. Aberdeen Angus sold to 279.5p/kg from CP Bateman, Docker. All OTM cows saw a pleasing average of 245p/kg, with some very lean cows in the market today. OTM heifers from R&K Jenkinson, Pilling sold to £2111 or 339p/kg for Friesians, with other Frisians to 314p/kg from DH&M Kellet, Thurnham. Beef bred OTM heifers sold to 334.5p/kg from DJ Clarke Farming, Barnacre for Limousins, with others from the same home to 289p/kg. All heifers today averaged 291p/kg. Montbeliarde. Other beef bred OTM steers achieved 364p/kg or £2412 from KH&D Holden, Pilling this time for an Aberdeen Angus. Other Aberdeen Angus OTM steers sold to £2508 from JD EM JA Atkinson, Kendal. All steers today averaged 322p/kg.

Just the one cast bull today, with this being a Friesian from GH Sanderson & Family, Catforth selling away at £2274.

Today’s cast / OTM sale averaged 252p/kg, more cows are required next week.
