NWA Auctioneers awarded for their outstanding work This weekend saw both Ian Atkinson and Will Alexander awarded for their outstanding work as new and young auctioneers.

Ian Achieved the Mart’s the Hearts ‘New Auctioneer of the Year’ award in October by a combination of Public Vote and judges opinion and was presented with his award, along with Paul Gentry who won Auctioneer of the Year and Raglan Market Café who won Café of the year at the Livestock Auctioneers Association AGM at the Yorkshire Museum of Farming on Sunday 8th November Also being awarded for his work this weekend was Will Alexander who won the ‘Young Show Stars Young Auctioneer’ award back in April. Will travelled to Canada to attended the Winter Fair with other competition winners from the day and had to give a speech and present an award at the show. Along with attending the show Will got to visit Niagara Falls and visit local farms in the area and then attend a livestock market.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 6th November The numbers of Store Cattle continue to come forward at Lancaster with plenty of buyers from nearby and far afield around the ring. A mixed entry in terms of quality typical for the time of year. Good quality cattle and cattle carrying plenty of flesh continue to sell well with other types selling to an easier trade. Once again it was very noticeable that farm assured cattle sold to a premium. Short keep cattle sold in excess of £1200 topping at £1360 from DE & SM Moorhouse of High House Farm.

A bumper entry of OTM Cattle at Lancaster and very in keeping with the time of year as many people lie there cattle in, many weathered and a large majority of parlour cows in as people clear out in preparation for winter. There was 135 forward with an overall average of 97ppk with over 85% of cows forward out of the dairy herd. All types sold to an easier trade with a larger number forward.

The weekly sale of Calves and Stirks had an entry of 45 forward. Black and white bulls calves sold to a sound trade but not on fire with large amounts out nationwide. They sold to a top of £140 from the Kidd family of Booth hall with all forward selling to an average of £94. Well grown rearers six weeks plus easily selling over the one hundred pound mark. A mixed selection of beef calves sold to £335 for an Angus bull from David and Eileen Wallbank of Abbeystead with beef calves selling towards £300 easily. A small selection of stirks were eagerly bid to and sold to their value with more calves and stirks required next week.

Monday 9th November A noticeably sharper trade for Prime Lambs at Lancaster today with once again an active ring full of buyers forward. The SQQ of 149 with an overall market average 147 with a lot more lambs required. The trade was topped by a smart lamb from Andrew Wilson of Burrow Heights selling to £82. Plenty of pens of continental lambs weighing 41kg and 42kg selling between 155ppk and 160ppk. Hill bred lambs selling three to five pound more than lambs on the previous week with 44kg, mules from RH & C Ayrton of Ouzelthorn selling to £63 with Mules averaging 136ppk. Horned lambs sold to £59 from BD Gill at 42kg.

A better show of Cast Ewes this morning, with 125 passing through the ring. Topping the day was T & CM Kelsall, Chipping with a pure Texel ewe realising £95. Mules sold to £64 for a pen of 9 from WTC Farms, with others to £62 from the same home. Lean sheep looking dear in comparison to fat ewes with buyers penalising over fat sorts. A large show of hill sheep saw big well fleshed Swales sell to £46 from KM & KJ Curwen, Marshaw and £44 from the same home, to average £40.54 for all forward. All sheep looking dearer on the week, to average £49.60 for all forward.

A smaller entry of two Prime Bulls forward saw Suckler bred Limousin bulls sell to 199.5ppk and 184.5ppk from JA Airey of Old Croft.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 5th November North West Auctions saw an entry of 2,264 Store Lambs forward and selling to one of the strongest trades of the season. Seasonal buyers now coming forward and keen to fill orders with the long awaited availability of grazing. Best bunches of Continental lambs regularly £57 - £60 topping at £64 for Texel lambs for J Bell, Bull Bank and Suffolks £61 from TJ Beaty. Medium keep lambs dearer this week £47 - £52 with smallest lambs £35 - £40. Rising numbers of Mules and Mashams coming forward and selling to £60, £59, £58 averaging £51.24. Hill lambs sold to £59 for Cheviot x from RI Dixon, £42.50 Rough Fells and £41.50 Swaledales. Tup lambs were a sharper trade with best grown sorts £55 - £60, Mediums into the late £40’s with smallest sorts £25 - £32.

The weekly sale of Calves and Stirks at J36 had an entry of 51 forward this week. A poorer show in terms of quality with a lot of plain black and whites forward in the market and very few beef calves. The trade for beef calves was strong with plenty of buyers in the market looking to buy. A run of British Blues from A & E Barnes of Bracken Fold saw bulls sell £385 and heifers making £330 at a month old. Better sorts of beef calves easily sold in the region of £300 around the month old. Very few rearing types of black and whites forward today with the few rearers forward being keenly bid for and selling well for the quality of the calves. Well grown month old rearers sold between £80 and £100 topping at £100 from B & MJ Nelson & Son of Halforth Farm

Tuesday 10th November Prime Lambs sell to £81 & 188p/kg at NWA J36 The weekly sale of prime lambs at NWA J36 sold to a rising trade with a market SQQ average of 161p/kg with buyers competing for all types and classes.

Best Continental lambs and well finished first crosses easiest sold regularly 165p/kg – 175p/kg topping at 188p/kg for Beltex lambs from ME Wannop & Sons Ltd. Mules sold to 164p/kg (av 153p/kg) with 42kg – 45kg in keenest demand, buyers cautious of overweight lambs.

Lambs sold to £81 for best Beltex lambs with other 42kg – 45kg lambs regularly £70 - £75 for first crosses. Assured lambs again easiest sold and it is certainly worth considering joining a scheme. Mules sold to £74 and pure hill lambs £61 for Rough Fells.

Lightweight lambs continue to attract buyers’ interest with more needed each week to fulfil the buyers demand. A top price of 178p/kg and £59 was achieved for 33kg Charollais x from W & J Penny. Hill lambs sold to £44 for Herdwicks, £48.50 Gritstones.

The weekly sale of Cast Ewes had a reduced entry of sheep forward with 359 forward. The trade was noticeably sharper than the previous week selling £5 or £6 better. All types eagerly bid for with well meated powerful Mule ewes selling between £67 and £70 with an overall average of £62.47 for all Mules forward.

Texel ewes sold to £90 from NJ Strickland & Son of The Borrans. Swaledale ewes sold to £53 from J & JA Burrow of Thursgill with pens of other well meated swales selling in the late forties and all Swaledale ewes forward averaging £41.38. Rough Fell ewes sold to £60 and averaged £53.

The monthly sale of Pigs saw one of the largest entries to date with additional buyers in attendance and keen to bid for all classes of pigs. Prime pigs sold to £130 with other pens of best sorts £100. Lighter weight prime pigs little over best store money at £65 - £82. Store pigs achieved £56 for best white sorts with others £50. Weaners sold to £30 with others generally £18 - £25 with lesser sorts very hard to sell. A few breeding pigs saw in pig large white gilts achieve £130 and older sows of the same breeding £80.

NWA Architectural Call for sites in AONB If you have land or buildings in the Arnside and Silverdale AONB there is presently an opportunity to comment on land allocation suggestions for development. If you have land that may be included in the area then please contact Greg at NWA for further information on the sites and the process.

Below is a brief outline of what is under consideration.

South Lakeland District Council and Lancaster City Council are working together preparing a specific Development Plan Document (DPD) for the Arnside & Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

The DPD will form planning policies specific to the AONB. It will identify sites for new housing and employment.

There is a consultation document published presently and there are a series of maps setting out site options suggested for consideration for development or protection.
