Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 6th March A mixed entry of Store Cattle forward in quality and age with all types eagerly bid for. Good quality short keep steers continue to sell very well topping at £1530 from H Chapman & Son of Millbeck with 22 – 24 month olds with others from the same home realising £1470. Native bred cattle always in strong demand at Lancaster saw Angus steers top at £1450 from O Butler of Barn Owl Farm. Younger native bred cattle always in very strong demand with many vendors looking to refill their sheds and people now beginning to plan ahead ready for grass day. An impressive 26 cattle sold for £1300 or more. Heifers sold to a top of £1290 from G Johnson of Jubilee Farm. Black and white steers sold to a top of £1090 from RC Billington & Son of Stubbins Farm. Steers sold to an average of £1045 with heifers averaging £968.

Once again plenty of buyers around the Cast Cow ring at Lancaster with the trade a little easier than been over the previous weeks but still a very good trade with vendors leaving well satisfied with the prices achieved. Over 80% of the OTM cattle forward where Black and whites selling to a market average of 129ppk with cast cows averaging 122ppk. Black and White cows sold to 141.5ppk with fit cows selling in the late 130’s averaging 113ppk. Beef cows sold to a top of 169.5ppk from TC Altham of Mill Bank. OTM steers and heifers continue to sell very well at Lancaster with British Blue steers selling to a top of 219.5ppk with Montbeliarde steers selling to 179.5ppk with an average of 175ppk of OTM steers. OTM heifers saw Swedish red heifers sell to 171.5ppk with black and whites topping at 169.5ppk with all OTM dairy heifers averaging 145ppk.

A smaller show of Calves this morning selling to full value. Calves sold to £335 & £320 for Hereford Heifers at 5weeks from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale.

Quality of calves was less than last week with Blue Bulls selling to £320 from Bill Rhodes, Galgate. Friesian calves sold to full value, with 7week old bulls selling to £158 again from Messers Drinkall. Others at £135 from JM & MH France, Littledale. Black and White calves averaged a pleasing £88/head. A ringside of buyers require more calves to fill orders. Stirks forward in better numbers with trade a fraction easier on the week, yet still remaining strong. Phill Wood of Quernmore topped the sale with Limousin heifers selling to £570. Angus Heifers from the same home to £560 and Angus bulls to £535 from Clive & Liam Baxter, Middleton. Younger Angus & Blue bulls at 4/5month sold between £430 and £460.

Monday 9th March A larger show of Prime Hoggs this morning. Trade better on the week peaking at 225ppk for a pen of 42kg Texel Hoggs from J Bargh & Son, to average an SQQ of 204ppk. Top price per head came from JM & MH France, Littledale with three Texel hoggs selling to £103 at 56kg. Suffolk hoggs topped at 200ppk from D Miller, Cobble Hey to average 184ppk or £89/head. Mule hoggs sold to £89/head again from J Bargh & Son, to average a solid £84/head. Hill bred hoggs sold to a top of £84 for Swales from KM & KJ Curwen and £82 from WM Pye. Cheviots sold to £94/head for heavy weights and 41kg Hoggs to £84.50 from Kelsall & Wood, Scotforth.

Cheviots to £82 from A & E Clarkson. Overall average of £87/had for ewes and £137/head for Tups

The beef trade continues to hold strong with Prime Bulls selling to a top of 199.5ppk for Limousin bulls from JM & AG Swarbrick with others selling to 181.5ppk. Three clean beef in, Simmental heifers sold to 191.5ppk from M & P Gardner of Nateby Hall with Frisian heifers selling to 179.5ppk from the same home.

Spring Breeding Sheep Sale An entry of 47 families forward sold to a mixed and slightly selective trade. Young sheep and sheep with strong lambs sold to a good trade with Texel shearlings sucking twins selling to a top of £278 from M Sutcliffe of Tarn Water with other families from the same home selling to £245 and £240. Old Texel ewes sold to £225 with twins and texel ewes suckling singles selling to £190 from Peter and Susan Robinson of Longfields. Full mouthed mules suckling twins sold to £180 from A shepherd of Muffy Platts.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 5th March This week’s entry of Calves comprised of younger beef calves and a poor show of black and whites with only a few rearing black and whites. Once again a consignment of strong British Blue calves from Bill Sharpe of Flodder Hall sold bulls to £470 and heifers to £300. Limousin and British Blue bull calves at six weeks old sold to £340 with beef heifer calves selling to late £200’s and around £300. Young beef bulls sold to £280 with heifers selling to £275. Only a few Black and White calves fit to rear sold to £112 with others around the seventies.

A small entry of stirks met a brisk trade for the quality of cattle forward with all cattle selling well and truly on value. All classes of Calves and Stirks continue to sell well at J36 with buyers looking to purchase all classes of cattle.

A plainer show of Cast Cows forward this fortnight with a lot of Black & White cows straight out of the parlour but all classes sold to a strong trade. Topping at 131.5p/kg for Black &White cows from TK Robinson & Sons of Old Hutton with the majority 115-125p/kg. There was a shortage of well finished Continental cows forward and these topped at 154.5p/kg for a Charolais x cow from AW & AM Clarke of Windermere. All cows averaged 113.19p/kg. A handful of heifers forward today topped at 194.5p/kg for a Stabiliser from A Dixon & Son of Selside.

A good ringside of buyers were present for the fortnightly sale of Store Cattle where all classes of cattle met a strong trade. A run of Simmental x bullocks and heifers from Mrs E Tuer of Windermere saw bullocks top at £1190 for a pen of six and a second pen of six sold at £1185 with Shorthorn heifers to £1115 from the same home. A good show of yearling cattle also met a strong demand with some farmers now starting to think about spring. Young Simmental bullocks sold to £1130 from FW park and £1030 for Limousin bullocks from DJ Clarke. A pair of 7 month old Limousin heifers from B & HM Wilson sold for £860 per head.

Tuesday 10th March The monthly sale of pigs saw best prime pigs sell to £109 from AJJ Horn with others at £100 from C Gawthrop and PK & R Woof, but generally £85 - £95.

Store pigs sold between £48 - £68. Weaners to £51 for Saddleback x gilts with others at £38.

Opening Sale of Sheep with Lambs at Foot The opening sale of sheep with lambs saw aged Texel x ewes with Beltex lambs sell to £173 (£69/life) from T Ellis, Woodside. All outfits sold averaged £151.

Sale every Tuesday at 11am in Ring One Already entered for next week 20 Mule/Texel 2 crop ewes with Texel & Suffolk Lambs North West Auctions held their weekly sale of primestock at J36 where 1600 prime sheep were sold. Well finished hoggs commanded premium prices while plainer hoggs lacking flesh were slightly harder to sell. The best hoggs regularly in excess of 220p/kg topping at 229.70p/kg for Beltex x hoggs from Messrs Dean & Brennand of Clapham and a top price of £100 per head for a single hogg from Fishwick Farms of Silverdale. Mule hoggs topped at £94. Plenty of Horned hoggs now coming onto the market with well finished hoggs regularly 185-190p/kg and topping at 194.90p/kg for Swaledales from TMW & H Hodgson of Ulverston.

Once again all classes of cast sheep met a very strong trade peaking at £145 with plenty of good Continental and Suffolk x ewes £120 - £130. Mule ewes continue to sell at a very fast trade topping at £113 and averaging £93.36. Hill ewes sold to £114 for Cheviots, £96 for Rough Fell and £88 for Swaledales.
