NWA Lancaster - Store Cattle, Calves, Stirks & OTM Cattle Friday 6th April The weekly sale of Store Cattle saw a better show forward selling to a sharper trade with buyers starting to look for summering cattle. Black and Whites were harder to place this week.

Topping the sale today was a pen of Limousin Bullocks selling to £1400 from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse. Native Cattle were, once again, good to sell at Lancaster with a pen of Aberdeen Angus Bullocks selling to £1270 from L Parsons & Sons, Levens.

Heifers sold to £1270 from J & R Waller, Killington selling a pair of British Blues.

Black and Whites sold to £1120 from TE Galbraith, Crooklands who also sold others to £1090.

A bumper entry of Cast Cows saw 131 go under the gavel with a good show forward selling to a sharp trade. An overall market average of 128p/kg was achieved.

The sale saw Cast Cows sell to 179.5p/kg for a British Blue from W & T Danson & Son, Pilling.

Black and White Cows sold to a top of 159.5p/kg from S Kellet & Son, Pilling. Cast Heifers sold to 171.5p/kg for Black and Whites from R & V Walmsley, Cockerham.

There was a few Cast Bulls in the market today which saw Friesian Bulls sell to 169.5p/kg from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale.

The weekly sale of Calves saw a larger entry forward selling to the sharpest trade seen for some time. All breeds were eagerly bid for with buyers now looking for calves.

The trade topped at £450 and £435 for British Blue Bulls from J & G Thornley, Kirkham closely followed by £310 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. British Blue Heifers topped at £355 from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale. Angus Bull calves sold to £325 from RT Halhead , Cockerham.

Weaned Black and White bull calves sold to £270 and £220 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with Black and Whites on milk selling to £160 and £120 from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale. All black and whites forward averaged £86.05.

Lancaster Sale Reports Monday 9th April There was just a handful of Spring Lambs in the market, but more could have easily been sold and to the advantage of the vendor. The trade topped at £156 for Suffolks weighing 41kg from E Needham of Stainton with lambs from the same home selling to 408p/kg, weighing 38kg.

All spring lambs forward averaged 367p/kg.

There was the dearest trade for Prime Hoggs seen yet this year at Lancaster with all classes very eagerly bid for. Hoggs weighing 39-45kg sold to a market average of 280p/kg with an overall market average of 269p/kg with best hoggs selling over 300p/kg. Andrew Butler of Hambleton sold Texel hoggs to 311p/kg, 309p/kg and 305p/kg whose full consignments, consisting of mainly Mules, averaged 276p/kg.

Heavy weight hoggs were regularly selling £150 plus topping at £158 for 54kg Charollais from Andrew Butler, this was closely followed by BD Wood of Out Rawcliffe selling to £157. Texels sold to a top of £155 from K & DE Woodhouse of Ellel, closely followed by £154 from WN & D Smith and Sons of Cockerhouse. Horned hoggs topped at £150 from Andrew Butler with Mule hoggs from the same home selling to £135.

Hoggs required each week with a busy ring of active buyers looking for all specifications.

It was great to have over 100 Cast Ewes at Lancaster today, selling to the best trade seen this year. Topping the sale was a Beltex tup from PD Anderton of Scorton selling to £138 closely followed by a Cheviot tup from KM & KJ Curwen of Abbeystead selling to £128. Ewes sold to a top of £128 for Charollias from WG & RG Riley of Chorley closely followed by Suffolks to £127 from WN & D Smith and Sons of Cockerham and £125 from G & N Ball of Great Eccleston. There was plenty of ewes selling around £120 mark. Mule ewes topped at £117 and £116 from WN & D Smith with others to £116 from FW Rhodes and Son of Ellel. Plenty heavy weight fit Mule ewes sold to £110 plus and all Mules forward averaged £102. Horned ewes topped at £82 for Swaledales from S Park of Aughton. All cast ewes in the market averaged £93.

More Ewes and Lambs on offer this week with more interest ringside with a bit of sunshine this morning and the feeling that spring is just around the corner. Texel shearlings with singles sold to £180 a family or £90 a life from John Young of Lindale. Topping the trade at £215 was aged Continental ewes with Texel twins from WW Hunter and Sons of Cockerham and others to £195. Broken mouthed Mashams with Texel twins sold to £185 with broken mouthed Mules to £180 all from D & K Swabrick of Out Rawcliffe. All ewes and lambs forward today sold to a market average of £62 a life.

Next sale of Sheep with lambs at foot at Lancaster Monday 16th April at 11am. The sale will include the annual show for Shearlings with Twin Lambs at Foot. Please advise the office of entries.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 5th April There was a smaller entry at the fortnightly sale of Store Cattle, with many farmers busy lambing and others selling at our previous sale a couple of weeks ago. Limousin heifers sold to a top of £790 from SW Atkinson and Son of Crook, with yearling dairy bred British Blue bullocks to £770 from GM Strong of Penrith.

The fortnightly sale of Calves saw a larger ringside of buyers seen for some time at J36, with more looking to purchase Beef Calves with pens emptying due to lambing time coming to an end.

The trade for calves topped twice at £300, firstly for British Blue bulls from HJ Robinson & Son of Preston Patrick and then British Blue heifers from JAH Walton and Son of Kirkby Stephen.

Angus bull calves sold to £295 from J & M Maudsley & Son of Endmoor and £290 from B Mallinson and Son of Levens. Plenty more beef calves easily could have been sold.

Rearing Black and White Calves were a sharper trade and eagerly bid for topping at £135 and £120 from S Mawson and Son of Orton.

There was a handful of stirks forward with more needed to meet the current demand with grass day creeping ever nearer. British Blue bulls sold to £405 from SI Porter of Grange over sands.

The strong trade continues for OTM Cattle with the majority of cows forward today being parlour cows.

Topping today’s trade was a British Blue Cow from S Procter, Selside selling to 154.5p/kg or a Fleckvieh from J & H Bland & Son Ltd, Levens selling to a top gross of £1078.23 Black and White Cows sold to a top of 149.5p/kg from AE & M Hayhurst, Natland.

Tuesday 3rd April The monthly sale of all specifications of Pigs saw a good trade throughout with plenty of purchasers. Prime pigs twice sold to a top of £155 for Pietrain cross pigs from KF Sweeting of Ulverston and A Preston of Whitehaven, topping at 176p/kg. All prime pigs forward sold to a market average of 120p/kg. Cast sows sold to a top of £130 from AJ & EJ Platt of Barrow, with plenty of big cast sows selling approximately around the £100 mark and in the region of 45-50p/kg. Stores and weaners were in short supply, especially for white pigs. Pietrain x stores sold to a top of £85 for a pen of 9 from AJ & EJ Platt. Just a handful of weaners forward saw Tamworth x gilts sell to £40 and boars to £30 DM Richardson of Penrith.

There was a larger entry of Sheep with Lambs at foot forward this week with 300 lives or 120 families being sold. There was more interest ringside with some bidders leaving empty handed. A good trade was enjoyed throughout as signs of spring come ever nearer and grass begins to grow. The trade topped at £195 for Continental ewes with twin lambs from AT Threlkald of Satterthwiate with Mule shearlings and twin lambs selling to £185 from T Ellis of New Hutton. Texel shearlings with singles sold to a top of £132 from G & ID Postlethwaite of Howgill.

An entry of 18 Spring Lambs forward met plenty of interest with all eagerly bid for and more could have easily been sold as purchasers are now looking for spring lambs each week. Lambs sold to an overall market average 329p/kg. The trade topped at 367p/kg and 357p/kg for Dorset lambs weighing 40kg from S Proctor of Selside. Top price per head of the day was £153 for 48kg Suffolk lambs from RA Batty of Selside.

A larger entry of Prime Hoggs forward meant a bumper trade was enjoyed throughout, with all hoggs well bid for and vendors leaving pleased with their trade. Just short of a thousand hoggs forward this week sold to an overall market average of 272p/kg with 39-45kg hoggs averaging 282p/kg. Well-fed hoggs sold around the 300p/kg mark with best conformation hoggs easily selling in excess of this. Beltex hoggs from JG Harryman of Hawkshead sold to 346p/kg, 329p/kg twice and 326p/kg, with hoggs from the consignment topping at £140.50. Topping the trade were heavy weight Charollais hoggs from J Stott Jnr of Crosscrake selling to £164 and £152. Hill bred hoggs topped at £131.50 for 47kg Mules from JG Harryman of Ambleside. Swaledales weighing 44kg sold to £129 from GM & A Jackson of Little Eccleston for a pen of 25 hoggs. Lightweight well-fleshed hoggs were also in strong demand with 34kg hoggs selling to £90.50 from AR & CA Fawcett of Seascale.

There was a larger entry Cast Sheep in the market today with 450 going under the gavel selling, once again, to a strong trade, equally as strong as the previous week with purchasers eagerly looking for ewes. Vendors are encouraged to take advantage of this trade and have a clear out. This week, again, saw best heavy weight Continental and Suffolk ewes selling in excess of £140. The trade topped at £151 for Leicester ewes from J & JA Burrow of Grayrigg. This was closely followed by £148 for Beltex ewes from CM Jennings of Selside and Texel ewes from Helen Newton of Low Levens.

Big heavy weight Mule ewes sold in excess of £110 topping at £116 from A Pickthall of New Hutton, closely followed by £115 from J & O Galbraith and Son of Endmoor. Horned ewes sold to a top of £100 from S Proctor of Selside with Swaledale ewes selling to £88 from The Inman Family of Witherslack.
