PRIME LAMBS
Spring lamb numbers continue to rise, with additional buyer’s ringside keen to secure lambs at this prompt Monday morning sale and keen to return each week - keep these lambs coming! Leading today’s sale at £180 was W Barnes, Lancaster selling heavy weight Texel cross lambs with others at £174.50 for Texel cross from JM Sanderson, Halton. Other well finished standard and heavy weight lambs were £162 to £170, with better end standard weights £150 to £162 and grass finished £140 to £150. Several pens of lighter weight lambs forward were well received, selling to £141 for Texel cross, with other at £136 and super lights to £111.
EJ&PE Burrow led the sale with Beltex cross lambs at 393p/kg, with other Texel cross lambs also selling at 393p/kg from CJ Metcalfe. Charollais cross achieved 390p/kg from D&K Swarbrick, Texel cross 388p/kg D Wightman and 381p/kg DR Preston. Well finish standard and heavy weights were regularly 350p/kg to 370p/kg, with the best grass finished 345p/kg to 360p/kg, mediums generally 340p/kg to 350p/kg, light weights 345p/kg to 365p/kg and an overall market average of 345p/kg.

Numbers very similar on the week, with perhaps a leaner entry forward as customers look to wean lambs. Best of the continental cross ewes sold to £220 for Texel cross from KA Purtill. Other pen fulls of stronger ewes £180 to £188, mediums £165 to £178 and leaner sorts £140 to £160. Mules sold to £170 from A&E Clarkson, with Mashams £166 from T&EA Garth. Medium Mules predominately selling at £140 to £160, with the next draw down £125 to £138.
Just a handful of hill bred ewes forward, selling to £158 for Cheviots cross from A&E Clarkson, with other Cheviots £119 and horned ewe £110. Smaller pure hill ewes were £58 to £75, with just a handful less selling at realisation.

Pigs sold to £245 for a pair from PK & R Woof, Stainton with others from this home at £240. Top ppkg was also from the Woofs selling 65kg gilts to 258ppkg or £165. Boars sold to £160 for 75kg from Cowell & Moore, Preston with store pigs topping at £86 from BR Harrison, Staveley and weaners to £62 from Sarah Whitley, Harrogate.
PRIME LAMBS
Sizzling lambs and scorching prices: Summer heat fires up the ring. Buyers were hot on the heels of all types of lambs especially the well finished end and competition was as fierce as a midday sun on an unshaded back.
Lambs topped today at £213 for a big Charolais lamb from Messrs BR Harrison. The top price per kilo was for a pair of Texels from GR Geldard weighing 47kg and making 400ppk. Todays overall average totalled at 362ppk with again more numbers required to keep up with demand here on a Tuesday. Other lambs sold to 392.3ppk these were for a trio of 39kg from Messrs D & S Robinson. Heavies also in demand with 50kg continental lambs from Messrs S Crowe also hitting 392ppk mark. 43-45kg sheep regularly selling between the £160-£175 zone in saying this though all classes and weights saw good returns today. STORE CATTLE- Junction 36: Where store cattle shine every time
Another standout day at J36, where the store cattle trade continues to set the bar sky high. Vendors once again reaped the rewards of bringing stock to a market that delivers sale in, sale out. Top price of the day was secured by Messrs RG & LR Holmes with a Lim bullock at £2460. The same good home had a further two bullocks at £2460. The same good home had a further two bullocks at £2440 and £2400. Stab steers hit £2140 from Tony Booth while Messrs Hodgson of Howriggs sold bullocks up to £2090 at just 12months of age. Messrs Holmes also had a nice run of heifers hitting £2160 and £2100 for Limousins. Angus heifers topped at £2040 for a pen of three these were from JE DJ ER Wightman. The same home had a BB heifer at the same money.
A good show of feeding bulls forward were also met with a sparkling trade topping at £1980 from S Bosworth for a BB. Messrs Rogerson also had a nice run of bulls in with one of their BB selling for £1960 at just 10m. TW Gorst then sold a cracking Limousin bull even younger at 9m for £1880. A row full of calves and stirks through the little ring this morning, with trade pleasing for all vendors. Bull calves were easy to place, this week selling to £920 for a British Blue from G&ME Woodhouse, Ellel. Also passing the £900 mark was another British Blue from CR&A Baxter, Morecambe which reached £910. A five week old Charolais from Wallbank Farms Ltd, Over Wyresdale sold to £890 with a further seven bulls past £800 today. A run of Hereford bull from Drinkall Bros sold to £740, £730, £710 and £700, with Black and Whites selling to £350 from this home.
Heifer calves were a nice trade, selling to £790 for Charolais from FW Rhodes & Son, Ellel with British Blues to £780 and £770 from SH&M Batty & Son, Quernmore. Aberdeen Angus sold to £760 from Drinkall Bros with this home selling Herefords to £610.

Bullocks topped at £2480 on two occasions, firstly for a pair of Aberdeen Angus from T Robson & Son, Singleton and secondly for a pair of British Blues from CG Birkett, Carnforth. Other bullocks saw J&H Bland & Son, Levens reached £2450 x2 and £2420 was achieved from JS Clark & Son, Catforth. A further twenty three bullocks achieved over £2300 and sixty were over £2000. Black and Whites sold to £1950 from TH Wensley, Kirkham.
Heifers again were good to sell, topping at £2400 for a pair of British Blues from AT Burrow & Son, Gressingham, £2380 for a pair of Aberdeen Angus from KH&D Holden, Pilling with other British Blues to £2350 from WS Burrow Ltd, Carnforth. DJ Townley, Ashton sold five British Blues to average £2312, with endless other entries to the £2000 club.

OTM trade continues recent form, top pence per kilo was 379.5p/kg paid on three occasions. Firstly, for a steer from M Shepherd, Pilling with Wallbank Farms achieving the same price twice. Cows topped at 334.5p/kg for a Limousin from RHM&S Boyren, Ulverston with the same home next at 329.5p/kg. Dairy cows sold to 299.5p/kg for a Montbeliarde from WR&CM Lawrenson, Winmarleigh with black and whites to 294.5p/kg from J&G Thornley, Kirkham.
Top grossing was a Hereford cow from GJT&V Parkinson, Preesall reaching £2611.71, with other cows to £2255.21 from EJ Ward & Son, Nether Kellet. Dairy cows sold to £2036.60 from WR & CM Lawrenson, Winmarleigh with the next best £1800 plus.
