Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Prime Lambs, Prime Hoggs & Cast Sheep, Monday 2nd June 2025.

NWA Lancaster once again proved to be the customer’s choice to market sheep, with numbers in all sale sections showing a sharp rise.

- Prime lambs sold to £179 and 416p/kg

- Prime hoggs sold to £210 and 370p/kg

- Cull ewes sold to £265

Prime Lambs

A sharp rise in numbers, well ahead of previous sales and corresponding years. An overall SQQ market average of 355p/kg was achieved, with well finished lambs between 40kg to 42kg attracting keenest buyer interest. Lambs sold to a top of £179 and 416p/kg from KA Purtill, Wigan. Closely followed by others at £173 from T&S Blades, Arkholme and 400p/kg from PD Anderton, Scorton. Other stand weight lambs were regularly selling at £155 to £162 and 365p/kg to 380p/kg. Heavy weight lambs sold to £171 for Texels from JE&J Pye, Quernmore with lighter weights to £145 from PD Anderton, Scorton.

No need to get these lambs too big, with the best returns for lambs in the SQQ weight range.

Prime Hoggs

A bumper entry of prime hoggs ahead of the upcoming festival sold to an overall market average of 282p/kg, for hoggs ranging from 26kg to 86kg. The best heaviest and well bred hoggs saw a sharp rise, ranging from 295p/kg to 310p/kg, with todays sale peaking at £210 for continentals from BJ Byron, Woodplumpton and 370p/kg from D Clark, Preston. Othe heavy hoggs were regularly £178 to £190. Standard weight hoggs again attracting the keenest buyer attention, selling to £150 for Charollais cross and 363p/kg from G&O Probert, Clitheroe, with others 320p/kg to 340p/kg and £142 to £150.

A large entry of mature hoggs sold to £209 for Texel cross from A Fare, Preston and 310p/kg for Texel cross from AVA Thornton, Cockerham. Other well finished mature hoggs were regularly 285p/kg to 300p/kg.

Cast Ewes

The largest number of cull ewes forward for several months, with 225 selling to an overall market average of £151. Strongest pure and ¾ bred ewes sold to £265 for Texels from A fare, Preston with others £238 from JB&C Lamb, Cockerham and endless pens were £200 to £220. Mediums ewes were £170 to £195, with lighter and learners sorts £135 to £160. Mules sold to £202 for a ring full from WN&D Smith, Cockerham with others £196 from D&E Whittaker, Quernmore. Stronger Mules were regularly £175 to £185, mediums £158 to £170 and leaner sorts £120 to £140. Other notable prices included Dutch Spotted to £202 from KP Dagger, Catterall, Suffolk cross £194 from KA Purtill, Wigan, Cheviots £186 DR Preston, Caton, Dorset £180 AG Butler, Hambleton, Rough Fells £150 WB Kellett, Pilling and Swaledales £104 DC Miller, Garstang. Medium horned ewes sold to £96 from JR Robinson & Son, Nook with other smaller hard worked hill ewes generally £65 to £80. Cull rams coming forward in greater numbers averaging £195 today, selling to £230 for Suffolks from WN&D Smith, Cockerham with others stronger end rams were £200 to £225, with next draw down £170 to £190. New buyers in attendance today attracted by the quality and sale efficiency of Lancaster on a Monday morning, keen to return every week. J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Spring Lambs, Prime Hoggs, Cast Sheep & Sheep with Lambs at Foot, Tuesday 3rd June 2025.

PRIME LAMBS & HOGGS

Big jump for the spring lamb and hogg trade. A tremendous trade for sheep today at Junction 36, with all classes taking a rise on the week. Prime lambs come to an overall SQQ market average of 370p/kg. Lambs in the late 30kg or early 40kgs receiving the most attention, however even the heavier end were far better to sell today. Lambs topped at £180 from RA Batty, Selside or 396p/kg from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe, this was for a pair of Texels. A pen of six Texels from KA Purtill, Wigan hit 390p/kg for 40kg lambs. Lighter Beltex from AE Atkinson, Kendal sold to £152, while 43kg and 44kg lambs were regularly at the £170 mark. Texel hoggs sold to £200 for the heavier end, of which there was many today. RJ Byron, Woodplumpton topped the pence per kilo section at 365 for a pen of five Beltex hoggs. Herdwick hoggs sold to 342.5p/kg for a pen of six at the 40kg mark, these were from Lakeland Farms, Ings. An overall average of 280p/kg was met today, with a large number of older heavy hoggs still on show.

Breeding Sheep

Hill sheep dominate today’s sale!

Trade for Herdwicks was strong today, with plenty of buyers lined up wanting families of all kinds. Herdwicks averaged £165 for all consignment both single and twins.

A much larger show expected next week and continuing for a few weeks yet.

Calves

Lancaster calf trade pleasing for all once again, rearing calves sold to £900 for a British Blue bull from the Lawson’s of Bank End who also sold others to £870 and £860. Other bull calves sold to £890 for Charolais from JM&MH France, Littledale who also topped the natives with an Aberdeen Angus at £840. Other bulls saw a nice run of calves from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale sell to £820 for an Aberdeen Angus, with this home selling a nice run of Black and White bulls to £470 and £450 at seven weeks old. A pair of eight week old Charolais bulls from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale sold to £800 x2. with trade here at Lancaster once again in vendors favour.

Heifer calves here in short supply today, selling to £850 for a British Blue from Lawsons Dairy, Cockerham with another British Blue to £820 from JM&MH France, Littledale who sold Charollais at £710. Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale sold British Blues to £590, with Hereford at £550. A handful of stirks sold to £1020 for an Aberdeen Angus heifer from M Atkinson, Bleasdale who sold others at £960.

The weekly sale of store cattle saw a catalogue entry of 230 all selling to an animated trade, as buyers are keen to keep pens full, despite further reductions in deadweight quotations.

Aberdeen Angus once again led the way at Lancaster with T Robson & Son, Singleton selling a pen of four quality steers to £2580. This was closely followed by KH&D Holden & Son, Pilling with a trio of Aberdeen Angus steers at £2550. Charolais steers peaked at £2520 x3 from RH Dodgson, Carnforth with other Charolais steers from this same good home at £2480 x2. British Blue steers sold to £2450 from R&DM Rossall & Son, Pilling with other British Blues to £2350 from H Chapman & Son, Carnforth. A trio of Simmental steers from EJ&PE Burrow, Storth sold to £2320. Herefords sold to £2150 for a pair from J&S Winstanley, Preston. Dairy bred steers saw an entry of predominately smaller younger cattle. TH Wensley & Son, Kirkham sold to £1620 and others from JP&L Eccleston, Grimsargh achieved £1600. All steers today averaged £2078.

Store heifers saw Lawsons Farm, Cockerham with a tremendous run of British Blues topping at £2400 x3 with a pair from this same good home at £2380 x2. Aberdeen Angus sold to £2250 x2 from SH&LE Birkett, Carnforth. A trio of Limousin heifers from P Whitton & Son, Burneside saw a final bid of £2220. AJ&D Knowles, New Hutton weekly consignment saw their Charolais sell to £1920 x3, with other younger Charolais from IOM to £1700, who also sold Shorthorn heifers at the same price. All heifers today averaged £1872.

OTM Cattle

An increased number forward selling to a fast and competitive trade, with all classes and types exceeding vendors expectations. Today market averaged was 266p/kg and £1567 per head.

Beef cows sold to 370p/kg for a Limousin from IOM with other well bred stronger end beef cows 280p/kg to 320p/kg and medium feeding types 250p/kg to 275p/kg. Top grossing beef cow was an Aberdeen Angus cross from the IOM totalling £2191, with a future five over £2000 and others generally £1580 to £1700.

Heavy well fleshed dairy cows sold to 284p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from PW &JM Norris & Son, Hornby who sold others to a top of £2445. Other well fleshed dairies were 230p/kg to 260p/kg, parlour types 225p/kg to 245p/kg and only the lightest and leanest less.

A large number of stock bulls forward today selling to 309p/kg for a Limousin, with others 255p/kg to 290p/kg. Top grossing being a Luing from RM&PM Simpson, Windermere at £3025.

OTM steers sold to 339p/kg for a British Blue cross from DE&SM Moorhouse, Kendal with others 280p/kg to 320p/kg. Top grossing being an Aberdeen Angus cross from JD EM JA Atkinson, Kendal achieving £2411.

OTM heifers sold to 359p/kg for a Limousin from Pilling Hall, Pilling with other heavier well finished heifers 295p/kg to 340p/kg, with the best dairy bred 265p/kg to 290p/kg. Beef heifers sold to £2174 for Aberdeen Angus cross from JD EM JA Atkinson, Kendal with dairy heifers to £1995 for Holstein Friesian from H Halhead & Son, Nether Kellet.
