Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Spring Lambs, Prime Hoggs & Cast Sheep. Monday 12th May 2025.

Lancaster Monday morning again saw a rise in number across all sale sections, with prices well inline with the national trends. New and additional buyers are anticipated in forth coming weeks

Spring Lambs

Spring lambs sold to a top of £170 and 405p/kg on several occasions for Texel cross from WA&LM Jenkinson, Stalmine. Other better end lambs were £148 to £160 and 350p/kg to 380p/kg, with all lambs today averaging a market SQQ of 350p/kg.

Prime Hoggs

Buyers still keen to secure all classes of hoggs to fulfil order, with today’s SQQ average 318p/kg, with the overall market average being 297p/kg.

Charollais cross hoggs led today sale at £176 for heavy weights from AG Butler, Hambleton. Other better end heavies £160 to £168 and the next draw down £148 to £158. Standard weights sold to £157 for Continentals from G Beresford, Kirkby in Furness, with others £151 from KA Purtill, Wigan who also sold light weight hoggs to £140.

T Taylor, Woodplumpton led today’s sale selling Continentals at 357p/kg, with other better end well finished hoggs 340p/kg to 355p/kg and mediums 310p/kg to 330p/kg. The best of the heavies sold to 306p/kg, with other heavier hoggs 282p/kg to 295p/kg.

Several mature hoggs sold to £153 for Cheviots and 313p/kg for Texels.

A wide range of cull ewes forward, generating an impressive average £143.93. Top price of £210 for a Charollais from GS Lander, Warrington with other stronger end first cross ewes £180 to £200. Medium ewes were £160 to £180, to including North Country Mules at £184 from RW&FJ Rhodes & Son, Quernmore and £176 from both S Wilson, Scotforth and P Metcalfe, Quernmore. Pure hill ewes sold to £134 for Gritstones with Dalesbred to £126.

The heat certainly isn’t drying up trade for sheep and lambs at the Costa del Kendal. Trade today remained firm considering the talk that trade was slipping elsewhere.

A large number of singles forward today, topping today’s single trade was William Gardner with a texel lamb making £325.00. Twins were strong on the whole, however ewes perhaps varied compared to the ewes with singles. Twins topped at £345.00 from JM and NJ Strickland with a tremendous pen of mule ewes, Hoggs with lambs were fit to stand with last Thursdays trade, with Texel hoggs with a Texel Lamb making £320.00 from Matt Allinson and Mules with Texel lambs making £290.001 from Robert Falshaw. Prime Lambs & Prime Hoggs

Prime sheep see a sharper trade Both a bigger entry and a bigger appetite saw that spring lambs hit the ground running today at J36. Texels sold to 422.5ppk and £178. D & D W Prickett, Milnthorpe sold a 40kg lamb to total at £169, while D & K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe sold to a top price of £178 for a 46kg lamb.

Hoggs were also a better trade on the week, despite the wide variety on show. All types from 25kg Herdwicks to 70kg Charollais enjoyed solid bidding activity. AT Burrow & Son, Hornby stole the show with good Beltex and Texel hoggs topping at 373.3ppk, this was for a pen of three. The same home had three more at 370ppk, with the heavier end of sheep from this good farming reaching the 360ppk mark. Hoggs topped pound per head at £180 for a pair of Texels from A G Butler, Hambleton. That same good home also had a single Charollais at £179. An overall average of 295ppk was achieved for hoggs today, with buyers still eager for the fit in specification sheep in particular.

Cast Sheep

Cull sheep maintained prices of recent sales with farmers off loading all passengers, with this warm weather and shortage of grass. All ewes sold today averaged £129.96, with over half the entry being pure hill ewes. Best continentals sold to £312 for Texels, with others £225 to £275, mediums £180 to £210 and smaller meated ewes £140 to £165. Mules sold to £190 for North Country Mules and £188 for Cheviot Mules, other heavier end were £170 to £185, mediums £140 to £160, with the smaller end £130 to £145 and leaner feeding type ewes £110 to £125. Pure hill ewes saw Cheviots sell to £180, Gritstones £152, Rough Fell £146, SBF £142, Lonk £134, Herdwicks £126 and Swaledale £120. Medium Hill ewes were £100 to £110, with smaller end £70 to £85. Cull rams sold to £245 for Texels with others £185-£220, hill rams to £146.

STIRKS - Stirks sell to £2140 at NWA J36

Strong numbers forward again at this ever-increasing popular sale with new faces once again in attendance.

Steers sold to £1960 for a yearling Stabiliser x from M Allen, Carnforth closely followed by Charolais x (10-month-old) from A&V&A Thornton, Cockerham who sold Limouisn x and Simmental x at £1780. MW & MR Black, Staveley sold 10/11-month-old British Blue x steers at £1750 and £1680. Other suckler bred steers (9/12 months old) nicely selling to £1250-£1500 with dairy bred selling to £1680 for Aberdeen Angus x from H Halhead & Son, Nether Kellet who also sold Hereford x at £1410. Younger sorts (8-month-old) £1000-£1200 with 6-month-old £780-£860.

An abundance of heifers today sold to £1650 for 11-month-old Charolais x from A&V&A Thornton, Cockerham who sold others at £1600. Other younger suckler bred heifers (9-month-old) selling to £1370 for a Limousin x from B Holland, Lowgill with others at £1260 from J Alderson & Son, Howgill and £1180 from JH Atkinson & Partners, Selside. Dairy bred heifers sold to £1450 for Aberdeen Angus x from H Halhead & Son, Nether Kellet with others (10/12-month-old) £1050-£1200 and younger 4/6 month old British Blue heifers from Bellart Howe Farm, Witherslack selling to £880 with others £800-£850, younger native sired heifers £720-£840.

47 young bulls forward attracted additional specialist buyers all keen to fill sheds. A run of 10-month-old Stabiliser x bulls from M Allen, Carnforth dominated the top prices peddling at £2140, with others £2100, £2000 (x5), £1990 (x7) with others regularly £1800-£1920. A Charolais x (7month-old) from Pilling Hall, Pilling sold at £1220 with younger dairy x bulls £850-£1100 depending on quality and type.

Store Cattle

More numbers and once again more new faces buying cattle at Junction 36. An explosive trade yet again from the off set saw once more a packed ringside with buyers from all over the UK keen on Kendal cattle.

Messrs JA Airey sold some smart Limousin bullocks to £2300 with others making £2220. Aberdeen Angus steers hit £2200 twice at around the 20month mark from BJ Bowness and from G Cuthbertson, Capplerigg. British Blues sold to £2160 from Messrs JE Wightman of Lupton. A pair of Herefords from TD ME & GE Todd made £2100. A quartet of Aberdeen Angus heifers from Messrs Wightman made £2000 per head. Charolais heifers sold to £1940 from WA Hodgson. The sale topped at £3300 twice, firstly for the pre sale show champion a Limousin cross cow with Limousin bull calf from B Holland, Lowgill. The second outfit to reach £3300 came from the dispersal of JM Livestock, Ayr with this run of working herd cows selling to £3250, £3100 x4, £2950 and £2900. Other cows with calves sold to £3000 from CR Ford, Ulverston whilst the consignment of heifers with calves from CD Slinger & LJ Eaton, Middleton sold to £2900, £2800 and £2750 twice.

A very good day on the pedigree beef side at J36.

Limousin bulls sold to 6000gns from Messrs WA & GR Sedgley, Low Bank House. Charolais bulls hit 5000gns twice from JE Gaunt and once from GJ & G Billington. British Blue bulls also sold to 5000gns from Messrs Hewson of Burgh Head Farm. Other Charolais bulls sold to 4000gns from Messrs Case of Plumpton Cottage Farm, whilst Aberdeen Angus and Hereford bulls both hit 3800gns from Messrs Rollason, Kendal House and Messrs Hewson respectively. Pedigree heifers topped at 5500gns for a British Blue from Messrs JF & C Saunders, Maidenlands Tarn.

Best beef cows sold to 334.5p/kg for a Limousin x from PJ & ES Rogerson, Appleby with other stronger end beef cows 285305p/kg with mediums 250-275p/kg. Top grossing achieved £2622 for a Limousin x again from PJ & ES Rogerson, Appleby with others regularly totalling £1900-£2200.

Dairy cows sold to 274.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from Strickland Hill Farming, Witherslack with others 248-265p/kg, parlour types 220-245p/kg with only the lighter weights and leanest less. Top grossing was another Holstein Friesian from Strickland Hill Farming totalling £2200 with over heavy cows £1700-£2000.

OTM beef heifers sold to 349.5p/kg and £2226 for a Hereford from TLB & J Knowles, Selside with dairy heifers to 304p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from C & AJ Woodhouse, Millom with others achieving £1554 from Strickland Hill Farming.

70 through the little ring today, with trade for all goods better on the week. British Blue bull calves were the order of the day, Christine Pickervance made the worthwhile trip to Lancaster this morning selling British Blue bulls to a top of £910, with a further four from this home at £900. Also at £900 was again a British Blue bull from AW&AM Park, Ellel who reached £880 and £870. J&G Thornley, Kirkham sold at £850 whilst JP&C Robson, Brock made £800. This said British Blue bulls calves today averaged £728.10. Other bull calves sold to £810 twice for Herefords from D&M Foster, Out Rawcliffe whilst Charolais topped at £780 from D&E Whittaker, Quernmore.

Heifer calves sold to £790 for British Blues from Pickervance Farms, Kirkham with others to £700 twice from this home. Aberdeen Angus also reached £700 from AW&AM Park, Ellel with others at £660 from J&G Thornley, Kirkham. Month old heifers sold to £530 for British Blues from J&G Thornley, Kirkham. Angus sold to £2380 x3 from C Hargreaves & Son, Overton with Simmentals selling to £2320 x3 from EJ & PE Burrow, Milnthorpe. Dairy bullocks topped at £2200 for Montbeliardes from AT Smith, Longridge with B&W topping at £1800 from ID Bailey, Catforth. Overall bullocks averaged £2061.93. Heifers topped at £2320 for Angus from T & E Garlick, Freckleton with others to £2220 from the same home. A pair of Limousin from A & MI Robinson, Orton sold to £2180 whilst British Blue’s sold to £2150 from MG & J Parker, Wennington and £2100 x2 for CG Birkett, Carnforth. Cast bulls today hit the top spot with local vendor JE Parkinson & Son, Quernmore with a Limousin bull to £2910 or 334.5p/kg. Other cast bulls sold to £2735 from SJ Gunn, Slackhead.

Cast steers saw PG Thornton, Scorton sell an Aberdeen Angus to £2373, with other OTM Aberdeen Angus steers to 359.5p/kg from PR Holt, Carlton. Dairy bred steers sold to 287.5p/kg from I Atkinson & Son, Carnforth for Friesians.

OTM cattle saw trade very similar on the week, with more beef bred cattle in the mix which proved very good to sell. Limousins from EJ Ward & Sons, Carnforth sold to 374.5p/kg for a heifer, with British Blue heifers to 369.5p/kg and Angus heifers to 364.5p/kg or £2379 from JD EM JA Atkinson, Kendal. Dairy bred heifers saw top price of £2117 or 299p/kg from Lawsons Farm, Cockerham for Friesians, with others from AT Burrow, Gressingham to 279.5p/kg or £1976. All heifers today averaged £1635 or 297.5p/kg.

OTM cows saw Norwegian Red cows to £2452 from EW&RM Towers, Hornby while Friesians hit a high of £2433 or 269.5p/kg from Lawsons Farm, Cockerham. Other Friesian from the same good home at achieved £2300 or 279p/kg.
