Weekly Report and Newsletter - 28th August 2021 J36 Rural Auction Centre: Show and Sale of 5000 Breeding Ewes and Gimmer Shearlings - 21st August 2021 North West Auctions hosted its Annual Show and Sale of 5000 Mule and Continental Ewes and Gimmer Shearlings. There was a buoyant trade throughout the sale, as to be expected, following on from a buoyant time within the sheep industry. It was great to see returning buying customers as well as many new travelled buyers. One of the best line ups seen for some time in the Mule Gimmer Shearling class saw an impressive line up of 14 pens for our judges Henry Knowles, Kendal and Matt Harrison, Milton Keynes to cast their eye over, who we thank for their time and expertise. The first prize rosette for the Mule Shearlings and winning the John Nelson Memorial Trophy was Fox Farms, Clitheroe selling to £230. The Derek Cleasby Memorial Trophy for the Champion pen of Mule Ewes was awarded to G&C Rylands, Tullithwaite with a smart pen of one crop ewes selling to £190.
Mule ewes met huge demand with regular consigners well supported and enjoying fantastic trade The consignment from FI & ME Little, Barrows Green sold to £190 three times, £185 twice and £180. Other leading prices saw the consignment from TA & JA Dixon, Selside sell to £185 twice with one crop ewes from AJ & G Bament, Towcester sell to £180. All Mule ewes forward averaged £156.79. 4 crop Continental ewes sold to a top of £172 from R Seed & Son, Chipping with Charollais ewes to £185 from BM Walker, Askham in Furness. Plenty of people in the market today were looking for well grown, quality sheep in which more could have easily been sold to the advantage of vendors. Middle quality sheep were well bid for, with the bottom end meeting realisation. Taking top spot today at £290 was a very stylish pen with second prize from JK & BE Townley, Caton selling to
£290. A great consignment from T H Gibson & Son, Staveley saw his run of sheep easily bid for selling to £280, £230 twice and £220 twice. Other noted prices were a consignment from James Taylor, Kendal selling to £230 with others to £220 from Messrs Whittaker, Millom. This was followed by other consignments topping at £215 from AR Edmondson, Ulverston, £215 from JS & KM Wilson & Son, Kendal, £215 from E Parker and £210 from AJ Geary, Milton Keynes. There was an impressive overall market average for Mule shearlings of £177.44. The catalogue entry of 1600 Continental shearlings all sold to their full value. Well-bred strong Continental gimmer shearlings were particularly in great demand. I would like to thank our Judges Geoff and Carole Marwood for their time and expertise and after much deliberation they awarded the first prize rosette to a wonderful pen of Texel home bred shearlings from JK & BE Townley, Lancaster which flew away to a price of £270. The day’s trade topped at £315 for a pair of pure Texel gimmer shearlings from ME & CA Duerden, Askham with other Texels selling to £285 from Sue Cunliffe, Grange over Sands. John Capstick, Killington sold his annual consignment of well-bred Texels selling to a top of £260 for a pen of ten. David Barker, Scarborough sold another wonderful run of Texel shearlings with these peaking at £255. Purchasers were keen to secure shearlings which had lambed, with these selling to a top of £200 from J Capstick, Killington. Good straight Continental gimmer shearlings were regularly selling in the £175 - £190 mark. Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Spring Lambs and Cast Sheep - Monday 23rd August 2021 PRIME LAMBS Lancaster Auctions weekly sale of prime lambs had an increased entry of 807 forward, selling to an overall market average of 230p/kg. Buyers today were prepared to pay a premium for well finished heavy weight lambs and showed caution towards the leaner types. A consignment from J & E Nuttall, Old Hutton took top spot with their Texel lambs selling to £136 and £131 with other noted prices for heavy weight Texels being £123 from B&M Slater, Chipping. Heavy weight Suffolks peaked at £128 from R&D Kellet, Cockerham followed by other to £125.50 from HJ & BE Kelsall, Gressingham and £119 from Ivan Slater, Claughton-on-Brock. Today saw numerous of pens of well finished lambs with plenty of weight about selling in excess of £110, as the sheep industry continues to enjoy a good summer. Today saw plenty of better confirmation lambs regularly selling around the 250p/kg mark, peaking at 278/kg from G Beresford & Son, Hellifield. It’s great to now have more upland lambs on the market, with 49kg Mules selling to £110 from T&H Drinkall, Oakenclough, all Mules forward averaged £93.

Mule ewes regularly sold into the nineties twice, peaking at £95 from G Riley, Bolton-Le-Sands and M&J Ronson, Pilling. A larger quantity of upland sheep on the market today saw the best Swaledale ewes sell to £86 from T & H Drinkall, Oakenclough. Cheviot ewes sold to £86 from SE & J Gorst, Littledale followed by two pens to £79 from KM & KJ Curwen, Abbeystead. J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep - Tuesday 24th August 2021 SPRING LAMBS There was a smaller entry of 1000 Prime Lambs forward this week, as many of our consigners are under movement restrictions due to purchasing breeding sheep this week. The offering of lambs today saw larger quantities of hill bred lambs and those that were well fleshed lambs selling to a premium. J36 always offers a strong trade for well finished heavy lambs with the consignment from RE & A Briggs, Wennington taking top spot at £144 with 60kg Texels. This was closely followed by the consignment from J&E Nuttall, Old Hutton selling to £136 and £134. 50kg Dutch Spotted lambs sold to a top of £123 from AJ & EJ Platt, Barrow-in-Furness. Suffolk lambs peaked at £122 from IM Clegg, Staveley. There was a shortage of heavy weight lambs today with plenty of middle to late 40kg lambs regularly selling to the £100 and teens. Larger quantities of upland lambs were in the market today and saw Mules peak at £112 weighing 50kg from J Handley & Son, Chapple le Dale, followed by 47kg Mules to £104.50 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. There was a larger number of horned lambs on the market today with well fleshed ones regularly getting in excess of the 200p/kg mark.

A Teeswater ewe from GM Redmayne, Ings sold to £139 with Beltex ewes selling to £131 from AE Atkinson & Son, Endmoor. DR & JE Wood, Bolton showed a strong run of Leicester ewes selling to a top of £125. Mule ewes continue to be a strong trade at J36 with a top of £112 twice from E & A Thompson, New Hutton and TMW & H Hodgson, Nibthwaite. Mule ewes were regularly selling over the £100 mark. Cheviots sold to £109 from J & C Airey, Little Urswick. Hill ewes at J36 continue to be keenly bid for with Cheviots leading the way at £110 from F & CE Bentley & Son, Shap with Swaledales topping at £90 from GM Redmayne, Ings with a full pen from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale selling to £89. J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Prime, Cast, Store and Weaner Pigs - Tuesday 24th August 2021 The weekly sale of Prime Pigs saw a competitive trade from start to finish with more needed to satisfy buyers demands. Prime gilts sold to £125 for Middle Whites from D Nicholson with Saddlebacks from W Stamper selling to £122, with others £115 from J & L Tyson. Prime hogs sold to £122 for Pietrain x from BR Harrison. Top p/kg was 145p/kg achieved by BR Harrison. All prime pigs averaged 11p/kg. Cull sows sold to £115 and 51p/kg from W Stamper. Weaners and Stores were a fast trade selling to £70 for Stores with Weaners to £52.
J36 Rural Auction Centre: J36 Show & Sale of Continental & Suffolk Gimmer Lambs, Followed by Store Lambs - Thursday 26th August 2021 J36 held its new sale of Continental gimmer lambs, which received an entry of 1000 lambs, selling to a trade as bright as the weather. I would like to thank our pre-sale judge Mr Robert Towers for his time and expertise, after much consideration he awarded the championship to RA Batty, Selside. This much-admired pen flew away to a scorching trade of £156, closely followed by another pen from the same good home selling to £150. Other smart Beltexs sold to £142 from JG & PH Thompson, Selside. A keen interest was seen for well grown Texel gimmers lambs, topping at £138 from WJ & LA Barker, Arkholme, followed by £134 from J Handley & Son, Chapel le Dale. Many Texel out of Mules were selling regularly well into the £120’s with a top of £124 twice from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale and A J Geary, Milton Keynes. A lovely Run of Suffolks from TA & JA Dixon, Selside which were awarded the 1st place rosette, sold to a top price of £124. All vendors left highly delighted with there days trading and the new sale was deemed a huge success. All gimmer lambs forward averaged £108. The fortnightly sale of store lambs saw an entry 3543 forward selling to an increased trade, with an overall market average of £78.84. A larger quantity of longer-term lambs forward with short keep lambs in strong demand and eagerly bid for. Texel lambs peaked at £120 from V&S Inman, Coniston followed by other strong Texels to £104 from JA Chapman, Kendal and £105.50 from Thomas Wilson, Selside. Beltex lambs peaked at £99 from JC&E Pedley & Sons, Sedbergh. Suffolk lambs peaked at £93 from R&D Kellet, Cockerham. Plenty of pens of well forward short keep lambs, regularly selling in the early nineties. A larger quantity of hill bred lambs forward today, saw Cheviot Mules to £89 from JA & SM Allen, Windermere with Continentals out of Cheviots peaking at £89 from NC & PE Buckley, Staveley. A larger entry of Mule lambs forward today sold to a top of £85.85 from Fishwick Bros, Longsleddale with others to £85 from D&A Jackson, Kirkby Stephen. Numerous pens of strong Mule whether lambs regularly selling in the early eighties with Mules averaging £79.14. Our next sale of store lambs is on Thursday 9th September.

The sale today included the summer show of calves under 56 days old, kindly sponsored by Semex UK. There was a big demand for top quality calves selling to a top of £620 for a Simmental bull calf from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green with others from this consignment selling to £445, £440, £405 and £400. British Blue bulls peaked at £575 from J&G Thornley, Roseacre. Other noted prices from British Blue bull calves were £495 from Wannop Farms, Heaton with Oxcliffe with others selling to £475, £465 and £445 from JH Sanderson & Family, Catforth. STORE CATTLE Store cattle saw an increased entry of 288 go under Gary’s gavel today, top of the leader board was GR & A Foy, Conder Green with a superb example of a British Blue steer, this was well fort for and finished at £1590. Not far behind was regular vendors EW & CR Clegg & Sons, Stalmine with two Angus steers selling at £1580. Also breaking the £1500 barrier was GR & A Foy with Shorthorns, who also sold Friesians to £1180. Other Friesians from R Gregory, Garstang sold at £1130, followed by £1110 from TH Wensley & Son, Kirkham. A cracking pair of Limousin steers from T & M Halhead, Priest Hutton sold to £1430. A smart pair of Stabilisers steers from David Preston, Caton sold at £1200. Making the heifer trade today was EW & CR Clegg & Sons, Stalmine with a pair of Shorthorns at £1390. Not far behind was TE JS & SA Curruthers, Underbarrow with a trio of smart Limousin at £1150. British Blue heifers from MJ Waller, Lupton saw a top price of £1270 with others from T Robson & Sons, Ingleton at £1250 for a pen of three. Angus heifers today saw no let up in trade topping at £1210 from SW&K Metcalf & Son, Whittington, with other Angus heifers at £1200 from CE & MA Hewitt, Forton. B&J Preston, Caton sold a pen of four Angus heifers to £1180. Hereford heifers saw a pen for SW&K Metcalfe, Whittington at £1230, Others sold to £1160 from M Shepherd & Sons, Pilling. Vendors are advised to make use of the current strong trade and enter cattle with confidence for next week sale. The upcoming bank holiday making no difference to the Lancaster trade. Topping the trade today was JA & R Geldard, Lower Levens with a Stabiliser cow at £1510.85, other beef bred cows from T & M Halhead, Priest Hutton saw Angus’s to £1413 or 189.5p/kg, with other Angus cows to £1382 from JH Woof & Son, Oxenholme. Limousin cows from TA Chapman & Son, Helsington sold to 197.5p/kg. A Bazadaise cow from BD & PM Gill & Son, Ingleton sold at 189.5p/kg. Dairy bred cows today saw well meated Friesians from AT Burrow & Son, Gressingham to £1234.31, with others at £1191 from the same good home. Also breaking the £1100 barrier was J Bargh & Son, Heaton-with-Oxcliffe at £1189.65, with Montbeliardes from Wannops Farm, Heaton-with-Oxcliffe at £1153.45. OTM heifers at Lancaster today saw Friesians from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale at £1094.95, with others to £1051 from J Bargh & Son, Heaton-with-Oxcliffe. Just a handful of cast steers today saw Friesian at £1271.75 from EW & CR Clegg, Stalmine.
