J36 Rural Auction Centre: General Sale of Horses, Ponies & Donkeys, Saturday 18th November 2023.

North West Auctions held its annual autumn sale of horses, ponies and donkeys on Saturday 18th November. With an entry of just under 300 and a ring packed full of people, led to an excellent day’s trade with a good atmosphere leaving vendors and buyers happy.

The sale topped overall at 2700 guineas for Highfield Dorothy, a smart 4 year old cob mare from Mr K Anderson, who made the long journey down to the West Midlands. A matching pair of miniature spotted ponies from Cormac Vallely, Northern Ireland, sold as a pair for 2500gns. A 12yr old black cob gelding from Mr J Stewart sold to 2350gns, D Kay sold a 2 year old filly at 2300gns and a 5 year old at 2000gns. The Hermits Stud sold their very smart typey cobs well at 2000gns, 1600gns, 1500gns and 1300gns. Lowmill Custard Cream, a 2 year old cob filly from Craig Eland sold at 2050gns.

Welsh ponies topped at 2100gns for a 12 year old Section B gelding and 2000gns for Llynhelyg Carwyn a 9 year old Welsh part bred. Fwrog Rihanna, a Section D yearling filly sold at 900gns and Gayan Guto a 3 year registered Welsh Section A gelding sold for 700gns.

Donkeys sold at 480gns for a 5 year old Jenny, 280gns for a yearling gelding and 280gns for a 10 year old gelding from N Harrison and 280gns and 220gns for 3 year old Jacks from G & M Rudd.

Shetland ponies topped at 700gns for Lunespring Zara a registered 9 year old mini Shetland mare from the Richardson family who sold others at 420, 400, 380 and 350gns for colt and filly foals.

The top priced foal was 1900gns for a very smart black Friesian x cob filly from Paul Wheeler, Wharton Ella a cob x Welsh Section D filly from M Metcalfe sold for 1200gns, followed by G&R Trigger a grey roan cob colt from G&R Dunn who went on to sell for 1150 gns and Luneside Dancing Queen, a cob filly from D Gough, sold at 1000gns.

Prime Lambs NWA Lancaster saw 743 prime lambs forward with an overall market averaged 252.4p/kg, buyers showing keenest interest in well finished fed lambs with lambs lacking finish a more cautious trade. Heavy weight lambs sold to £142.50 for Texel cross form C Pickering, Longridge with others at £138 from KA Purtill, Wigan. Others were regularly selling at £122 to £130, depending on breed and quality. Standard weight lambs sold to £128 for Texels from A Birchall, Dolphinholme with others at £120.50 from JM&HM France & Son, Littledale. Light weight lambs sold to £103 for Texel cross from T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping with others at £98 from M&L Preece, Kirkby Lonsdale. Heavy weight Cheviot Mules sold to £128.50 for a ring full from P Whitton & Son, Burneside with Mashams to £118 from S&J France, Over Wyresdale, North Country Mules to £117 from P Whitton & Son, Burneside with others at £114 from B&SE Carter, Ellel. Best bred lambs sold to 290p/kg for Texels from A Birchall, Dolphinholme who sold others at 288p/kg. Others achieved 286p/kg from B&SE Carter, Ellel and 280p/kg from AG Butler, Hambleton. Well finished Continental bred lambs were generally 255p/kg to 270p/kg, with medium finished 240p/kg to 265p/kg depending on quality and type. Hill bred lambs sold to

257p/kg for Cheviot from DR Preston, Caton with Mules to 252p/kg from AG Butler, Hambleton and 250p/kg from RG&H Preece, Roeburndale with others generally 240p/kg to 250p/kg.

Mules sold to £108 for heavy weights from C&B Lowther, Over Wyresdale and JE&J Pye, Quernmore. Medium Mules were £75 to £88. Hill bred ewes sold to £86 for Cheviots from J Smith, Brookhouse with other pure hill ewes £45 to £55, depending on breed and quality.

Another full market saw over 2200 prime sheep forward selling to a trade continuing to increase week on week.

Prime Lambs Prime lambs saw an overall market average of 255p/kg for lambs ranging from 29kg to 64kg. Heavy weight lambs continue to be well sort after at NWA J36. This week selling to £158 on two occasions for Texel cross lambs from TMW&H Hodgson, Nibthwaite, with others at £156 from J&O Galbraith & Son, Endmoor, BJ Bowness, Kendal.

Other were regularly £138 to £145. Standard weight lambs sold to £137 for Beltex cross from IOM, with others at £132 for Texel cross from BHM&S Boyren, Colton with others at £130 from Robyn Allen, Ings and £128 from D Black, Milnthorpe. Light weight lambs sold to £104.50 for Texel cross from WS Burrow Ltd, Carnforth with others at £104 for Texel cross from RG&L Potter, Tebay and MW&MR Black, Staveley. Pure hill lambs sold to £132 for Cheviots from BR Harrison, Staveley with others at £127 from Stockdale Farms, Sedbergh. First cross ewes sold to £129 for Charollais cross from FE&CM Robinson & Son, Milnthopre, with others at £129 from S Mawson & Son, Orton. Other heavy well fleshed first cross ewes were regularly £110 to £120. Cheviot Mules sold to £121 from TE&J Waddsworth & Son, Sedgwick with North Country Mules selling to £109 for a ring full from RR&JA Knowles, Docker with other at £107 from DM&D Cook, Ulverston. Heavy Mules were generally £90 to £108, with mediums £85 to £90. Pure hill ewes sold to £110 for Cheviots from J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston with Lleyns to £106 from JA&R Geldard & Son, Levens. Horned ewes sold to £66 for Rough Fells from JW&E Woof & Son, Sedbergh with Scotch Black Face to £62 from RI Dixon, Low Newton and Swaledale to £59 from P Whitton & Son, Burneside. Smaller leaner hill ewes were generally £38 to £45.

Cull rams sold to £144 for medium Texels with others £116 to £130. Lighter weight rams were generally £85 to £110.

Heifers sold to a top price of £1700 for a British Blue cross from J&H Bland & Son Ltd, Levens who sold Charolais cross at £1550 and British Blue cross at £1510. Native sired heifers sold to £1520 for Aberdeen Angus cross from T&E Garlick, Freckleton with others at £1400 from L Parsons, Levens. The stronger end of heifers were regularly £1300 to £1450.

The monthly sale of farmers stirks saw steers sell to a top price of £900 for Aberdeen Angus cross from J Redmayne, Samlesbury with others at £860 from G&D Ball & Son, Little Eccleston and CE&MA Hewitt, Forton.

British Blues sold to £850 from JA Sheering, Quernmore who sold Holstine Friesians at £650.

Heifer stirks sold to £700 for yearling Aberdeen Angus heifers from G&D Ball & Son, Little Eccleston with younger British Blue cross selling to £670 from Gradwell Farm Partners, Great Eccleston.

Feeding bulls sold to a top price of £1520 for strong Montbeliardes from WR&CM Lawrenson, Winmarleigh. An entry of six month old suckler Simmental cross bulls from R Eshborn, Lancaster sold to £800, with others at £860. More bulls are required each week.

Cast/ OTM Cattle An improved entry of cull cows saw an overall market averaged of 259p/kg. Heavy well fleshed beef cows sold to 234p/kg for a British Blue cross from AT Burrow & Son, Hornby with Charolais’s selling to 241p/kg from E&M Fairhurst, Austwick and Limousin cross also achieving 214p/kg form R&S Mitchell, Ellel. Other well bred beef cows were 185p/kg to 205p/kg, with first cross cattle suitable for finishing 160p/kg to 180p/kg. Top grossing beef cow was a Charolais from E&M Fairhurst, Austwick achieving £1719. Heavy well fleshed dairy cows sold to 179.5p/kg for a Fleckvieh from B&AC Barnes, Middleton with Montbeliarde at 169.5p/kg from WR&CM Lawrenson, Winmarleigh. Other better end dairy cows were 160p/kg to 165p/kg, with medium parlour types 135p/kg to 148p/kg and the leanest sorts 90p/kg to 110p/kg, depending on quality and type. Top grossing beef cow achieved £1367 from B&AC Barnes, Middleton.

OTM beef heifer sold to 244p/kg for a Limousin cross from M&RW Stirzaker, Milnthorpe with Hereford cross to 234p/kg from WS Burrow, Silverdale and AT Burrow, Gressingham. Other beef heifer were nicely 200p/kg to 225p/kg. Top grossing beef heifer achieved £1615 from AT Burrow, Gresssingham. Dairy heifers sold to 214.5p/kg for a Holstien Friesian from GA&A Atkinson, Cantsfield with others 207.5p/kg from W&C Gorst & Son, Ellel and 204.5p/kg from JT&V Fox, Quernmore. Leaner heifers were 175p/kg to 195p/kg. Top grossing dairy heifer achieved £1383 again from GA&A Atkinson, Cantfield.

OTM steers sold to 269p/kg and £1691 from M&RW Stirzaker, Milnthorpe.

Cull bulls sold to 149.5p/kg and £1577 for a Hereford from Ireland Farms, Kirkby Lonsdale.
