Prime Lambs

150 spring lambs were forward with the best seeing Suffolks sell to £208 from WN&D Smith & Sons, Cockerham. Texels twice sold to £206 from P Lawrenson & Son, Chorley with Beltexs to £202 from A&E Clarkson, Thurnham. The best bred lambs sold to 490p/kg from P Lawrenson & Son, Chorley. The better end regularly selling at 465p/kg to 480p/kg, with good commercial sorts 435p/kg to 445p/kg.

Prime Hoggs

There were less hoggs about today with a two tier trade seen, hoggs with meat and well fed met plenty of demand, with leaners sorts harder to place. Texels sold to £202 from D&N Smith, Stalmine with Beltexs to £198 from AG Butler, Hambleton. Plenty of heavy and well bred hoggs were regularly £190 to £200. Hill bred hoggs saw Mashams to £166 from T&D Wright, Roeburndale with Mules to £160 from KA Purtill, Wigan who also sold Cheviots to £155. Herdwicks sold to £126 from R Doran, Preston with Swaledales to £120 from W Gardner, Brookside.

Sheep

Over 100 cast sheep were forward with an overall averaged of £120 achieved for all sold. Texel ewes sold to £222 from James Sanderson, Halton. First cross Texel ewes sold to £190 from P Lawrenson & Son, Chorley with the heaviest ewes regularly £180 to £190. Mule ewes sold to £158 from G Riley, Carnforth with an overall averaged of £125. Hill ewes saw Swaledales to £120 from KM&KJ Curwen, Abbeystead with Lonks to £120 from W Gardner, Caton. Dalebreds sold to £106 from T&D Wirght, Roeburndale. More ewes are needed on a weekly basis to fulfil buyers demand.

Sheep with Lambs at Foot

80 ewes / hoggs with lambs were forward with all selling to a sharper trade. Texel shearlings with single Texel lambs sold to £275 from W Pinder Jnr, Clitheroe who sold a run of Cheviot Mule hoggs with Texel cross lambs to £258 and £255. Aged Cheviot ewes with Texel lambs saw twins sell to £235 from SE&J Gorst, Littledale who sold other pens to £225.

Prime Lambs

A larger entry of spring lambs were forward, selling to a market averaging of 415p/kg or £181 a head. The sale peaked at £218 for Texels from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe with Beltexs to £215 from AE Atkinson & Son, Endmoor. Suffolks sold to £207 from RA&L Hodgson, Patton. The best and heaviest lambs were regularly around the £200 mark. Texel lambs sold to 455p/kg from J&O Galbraith & Son, Endmoor with nice bred sorts 430p/kg to 440p/kg.

More lambs are needed on a weekly basis for our active ringside of nine buyers.

Prime Hoggs

555 hoggs were forward with all selling to a sharper trade than first expected. Heavy hoggs sold to £218 from N Barker, Dalton for Texels, with others at £212 from M&YS Barker, Halton. Heavy continental bred hoggs were regularly £190 to £200. A run of well finished hoggs from GM&A Jackson, Little Eccleston saw Texels sell to £190 and other pens to £187. The best bred hoggs saw Texels to 450p/kg from FI&ME Little, Barrows Green and 448p/kg from GM&A Jackson, Little Eccleston. Well over two thirds of the sale was made up of hill bred hoggs, with Swaledale to £180 from M&YS Barker, Halton. A ring full of Cheviots sold to £179 from GM&A Jackson, Little Eccleston who sold other pens to £177. Pens of Mules sold to £176 from M&YS Barker, Halton with Herdwicks to £170 from the same home. There is plenty of demand in the approaching weeks with buyers looking to purchase all types of hoggs for the upcoming festival.

Cast Sheep

A pleasing entry of 485 cull ewes were forward today, all sold averaged £116, with a large proportion of the sale being pure hill ewes. Only a handful of the very best were forward today, selling to £280 for Texels from RA Batty, Selside with other Texels to £270 from T Strickland, Whinfell. Charolais sold to £240 from RJ Stott, Stainton and Suffolks £228 from T&E Redmayne, Carlisle. The best medium continental and first cross ewes were nicely selling at £165 to £190, with smaller meated sort £140 to £160. Mules sold to a top of £154, with other better medium North Country and Cheviot Mules £135 to £145 and smaller meated sorts £110 to £125. Pure hill ewes sold to £136 for Rough Fells, £128 Cheviots, £125 Dalesbreds, £116 Swaledales and Herdwicks £112. Medium hill ewes were generally £80 to £100, with the smallest and leanest generally £55 to £70. 38 cull rams sold to £185 for BFL’s, Rough Fells £160, medium continentals £135 to £150 and other hill rams £115 to £130.

Sheep with Lambs at Foot

A few less sheep with lambs at foot about today, with many farmers in the field. However there was no let up in trade, with buyers keen for all classes and types. The sale peaked at £282 for continental cross ewes sucking twin lambs from JM&NJ Strickland, Whinfell with similar families regularly £265 to £280. Continental cross ewes suckling singles sold to £190 from SJ Atkinson, Crook. North country Mules were generally £170 to £180. An eye

catching pen of Aberfield cross hoggs with Beltex cross lambs from Stockdale Farms, Sedbergh sold at £260. Hill ewes are now coming forward in greater numbers, with Herdwick cross ewes suckling single Texel cross lambs selling to £162, with others ranging from £50 to £55 per life.

Calves & Weanlings

A small but quality show of rearing calves were forward at Lancaster this morning, which sold to a fantastic trade throughout. A top price of £560 was achieved for an Aberdeen Angus bull from RE&P Miller, Barnacre followed by a Limousin bull at £540 from MG&J Parker, Wennington and younger six week old Blue selling to £510 from JP&C Robson, Garstang. All bull calves were easy to sell, with the better end over £500. Rearing heifer calves sold equally as well, with these topping at £400 for an Aberdeen Angus from W&G Cornthwaite & Son, Claughton on Brock with younger calves to £340 for Limousins and £330 for Blues.

A good show of weaned calves and stirks were forward, with these selling to £700 for Herefords bull from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green with Blues at £650 from W Pinder, Clitheroe. All bulls forward in the stirk section sold above £550. A handful of weaned Blue steers were forward, with these selling to £650 and £600 from JC Morphet, Hale. Weaned heifers sold to £610 for Blues again from JC Morphet, Hale with Herefords reaching £500 from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green.

More cattle are needed next week with an ever increasing ring side of buyers, capable of handling 100 plus calves every week. Please contact the office or auctioneers with your entries or if you require a farm visit. Already entered for next week are 50 beef calves from three local farms.

Best steers sold to £1780 for Simmental cross with Aberdeen Angus cross £1690, Limousin cross £1670 and Hereford cross £1670. Other stronger end steers were regularly £1500 to £1650, with other feeding types £1300 to £1500.

Heifers sold to £1640 again for Simmental cross, Hereford cross sold to £1600, Blondes to £1550, Charolais £1540 and Aberdeen Angus cross £1510. Other stronger end heifers were regularly £1350 to £1500, with the younger end £1020 to £1150.

OTM Cattle

A sharp rise in the cull cow trade, saw all sold to a market averaged 191p/kg. The best beef cows sold to 259.5p/kg, with others regularly 220p/kg to 240p/kg. Mediums feeding types were 205p/kg to 220p/kg, with only the leaner sorts 180p/kg to 200p/kg. Dairy cows sold to 209.5p/kg for Fleckviehs and Holstein Friesians to 199.5p/kg. Other better heavier end dairy cows were 180p/kg to 195p/kg, with the best parlour type cows 170p/kg to 185p/kg and the lighter and leaner sorts 140p/kg to 160p/kg. Top grossing being a beef cow at £1805, with others regularly £1400 to £1650. Dairy cows sold to £1548 for a Fleckvieh with the better stronger end £1200 to £1400.

OTM heifer sold to 254.5p/kg and £1527 for a Simmental cross, with diary heifers to 231.5p/kg and £1363. OTM steers sold to 264.5p/kg for British Blue cross and £1656 for an Aberdeen Angus cross. Cull bulls sold to 249.5p/kg for a British Blue and £1682 for a Beef Shorthorn.
