Prime Hoggs

An increased entry of hoggs forward, which saw all types sell to a sharper trade on the week. Heavy hoggs saw Texels sell to £161 from SH&LE Birkett, Nether Kellet who sold other pens to £159 and £158. Charollais sold to £157 from Cardwell Farms, Stalmine. Heavy Continental hoggs were regularly £150 plus. Beltex hoggs sold to £157 from KA Purtill, Wigan who sold others to £154. Best pens sold to 365p/kg from AG Butler, Hambleton who sold other pens to 360p/kg. The best bred hogg were regularly 340p/kg to 360p/kg. A ring full of Mashams sold to £148.50 from T&D Wright, Wray with Cheviots to £147 from SH&LE Birkett, Nether Kellet. A pen of 40kg Mules from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth sold to £127.50 or 319p/kg.

Light weight hoggs were in keen demand with these regularly selling at 310p/kg to 330p/kg. A pen of 39kg Texels from S Rossall, Over Wyresdale sold to £126.

The best Mules were generally £110 to £115. A ring full of Cheviots sold to £101 from SE&J Gorst, Littledale with medium weight Swaledale ewes selling to £55 from D Gardner, Lancaster.

Prime Hoggs

1212 sheep were forward at the weekly sale at Junction 36, with all types being a shade sharper on the week. An active ring side of nine buyers, saw lambs sell to an overall market averaged of 318p/kg, with a top price of 400p/kg or £190 a head.

Another increased number of ewes forward sold to an average of £92 a head, with over half the entry being horned and hill bred ewes. Stronger end pure and first cross ewes sold to £160 for Beltexs from RT Colbear, Appleby with Suffolks to £159 from RA&L Hodgson, Patton. Others were regularly £138 to £150. Blue Face Leicesters sold to £157 from Bank House Farms, Leck. Mediums cross bred ewes regularly £108 to £125, depending on quality and type, with leaners sorts £85 to £98. Pure hill bred ewes sold to £152 for Cheviots from M&C Booth, Kentmere with Dalebreds to £110 from WI&A Atkinson, Bleasdale, Rough Fells to £103 from AEA Harrison, Kentmere, Swaledales to £89 and Herdwicks to £70 both from CS Long & RH Knipe, Back Barrow. Stronger end hill ewes were regularly £87 to £90, with mediums £66 to £75 and only the smallest and leanest £40 to £50. Heavy Mules sold to £123 from ST Birkett & Son, Carnforth with others at £118 from AW&D Brown, Pennington and £117 from DE&SM Moorhouse, Natland. Other stronger end ewes were £108 to £115, medium types £90 to £102 with the smaller meatier end £80 to £90.

A smaller number of cull rams forward sold to £165 for Dorset’s from D Black, Milnthorpe with Continentals to £160 from RT Colbear, Appleby. Hill rams sold to £90 for Rough Fells from I&J Mallinson, Selside.

107 rearing calves saw the strongest bull calves sell to £570 for a Charolais from AK&BM Robinson & Son, Arkholme with a Limousin cross to £565 from M Forbes, Ecclefechan. Younger best rearers saw British Blue cross at £445 from JM Barton & Son, Lupton with other at £380 to £420. The best youngest bull calves were £270 to £340. Native sired calves sold to £280 for an Aberdeen Angus from J&R Waller, Killington. Dairy bulls sold to £195 for black and whites from J&R Waller, Killington with others at £180 from AE Luffman, Sedbergh. Heifer calves sold to £495 from AK&BM Robinson & Son, Arkholme with the best youngest heifers to £350 for a Limousin cross from AE Luffman, Sedbergh and British Blue cross £345 from FB Dunning & Son, Orton. Others were regularly £260 to £320 with a keen interest in those suitable for sucker replacements.

Bull stirk sold to £700 from TW Handley, Sedbergh with a ring full of British Blue cross selling at £625 from M Forbes, Ecclefechan.

Only a handful of heifer stirks forward sold to £950 for an eight month old British Blue cross, with other heifers generally £750 to £820. Younger recently weaned stirks were £520 to £600.

Store Cattle

The sale of 250 store cattle was met with a busy ring side of buyers, ensuring a sharp trade was achieved. Limousin bullocks sold to £1680 from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe with Aberdeen Angus bullocks selling to £1490 from D&E Whittaker, Quernmore. A pen of ten diary bred Limousins bullocks from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe sold to £1480. Yearling bullocks were in keen interest with a pair of Charolais’s to £1400 from AW&AM Clarke, Windermere. Other Limousins achieved £1390 from M Wood, Hawkshead. Best yearling bullock were around the £1300 to £1400 mark.

Heifers saw British Blues sell to £1340 from T&D Wright, Roeburndale with Limousins achieving the same price from GH Jones, Ambleside. A pen of sixteen month old Simmental heifers sold to £1310 from G GU&D Swarbrick, Meathop. Yearling heifers sold to £1310 for Limousins from GH Jones, Ambleside. Ten month old British Blues sold to £1290 form W Heaps, Charnock. Diary bred heifers saw British Blues at sixteen month sell to £1300 from S&M Cooper, Leece with other pens to £1290 from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton. Charollais heifers sold to £1260 from H Halhead & Son, Carnforth.

Limousin bulls sold to £1100 from M Wood, Hawkshead.

OTM Cattle

A fast trade was seen for all classes and types of cull cows, with an overall average of 161p/kg. Best beef cows sold to 199.5p/kg for a Limousin from R Allen, Ings with others regularly 175p/kg to 185p/kg. Other beef cows were regularly £1100 to £1130. Dairy cows sold to 199.5p/kg for a young Holstein Friesian from Jenkin Cragg Farm, Kendal with other heavy cows regularly 170p/kg to 185p/kg and parlour type cows 150p/kg to 165 p/kg. Top grossing being a Holstein Friesian from RR&JA Knowles, Docker achieving £1409.

OTM heifers sold to 229.5p/kg and £1397 for a Holstein Friesian from B&JM Crowe, Witherslack. Cull bulls sold to 169.5p/kg and £1969 for a Stabiliser from JA&R Geldard & Sons, Levens with others at 159p/kg and £1937 for a Hereford from Jenkin Cragg Farms, Kendal.

Another 500 plus Friday at NWA Lancaster which saw calves sell to £600, store cattle to £2000, OTM cattle to 281p/kg and £2000.

Dairy Cattle

An in-calf dairy heifer due March to the Aberdeen Angus sold at £1400.

Calves and Weanlings

A large entry of 140 calves were forward with customers in attendance from far and wide, proving Lancaster to be the chosen calf market in the local area. The strongest beef calves sold to £585 for a Charolais from SW&K Metcalfe, Whittington with the strongest British Blue cross regularly £500 to £570. Aberdeen Angus cross were frequently £460 to £500, with nice medium rearers regularly £300 to £360. Younger month old calves were £260 to £300. Dairy bulls sold to £230 for a Holstein Friesian from JH Towers & Sons, Tunstall with other stronger end calves regularly £140 to £180. Weaned bulls sold to £590 for five month old Aberdeen Angus cross.

Strongest heifer calves sold to £470 for a British Blue cross, with Aberdeen Angus cross also achieving £470 and Charolais cross to £445. The best rearers were regularly £320 to £360, with younger heifers £270 to £310. Several weaned heifers forward sold to £600 for a British Blue cross with Aberdeen Angus cross selling at £560.

Store Cattle

303 store cattle continued to sell to an extremely strong and competitive trade with all vendors leaving well suited with prices achieving. Today’s sale peaked at £2000 on two occasions for Limousin cross steers from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse and PM&ST Entwistle, Abbeystead. Other strong steers were regularly £1800 to £1900, to include native sire stores peaking at £1900 for Aberdeen Angus cross from J Clark Ltd, Preston. Good yarding steers were generally £1550 to £1750, include the top price diary steers achieving £1680 for Fleckviehs from TJ Lloyd, Settle.

Younger steers sold to a top price of £1600 for a pen of British Blue cross from P Whittle, Bolton. Other younger British Blues sold to £1250 from JA&ME Mawson, Orton.

Heifers sold to £1800 for a pair of British Blue cross from M Shepherd & Sons, Pilling with Aberdeen Angus selling to £1780 from J Clark Ltd, Preston. Other stronger end heifers were regularly £1500 to £1650. Younger heifers sold to £1280 for Aberdeen Angus cross from R&E Ladds, Kendal and £1160 for Beef Shorthorns from JA&ME Mawson, Orton.

The sale concluded with 87 stirks which saw nine month old Aberdeen Angus cross steers sell to £1040 from G&D Ball & Son, Little Eccleston and British Blue cross to £900 from RW Rhodes & Son, Ellel. Beef Shorthorns sold to £880 from E&T Richardson, Garstang. Younger steers sold to £860 for Aberdeen Angus cross from S&J France, Over Wyresdale with others regularly £800 to £850. Young dairy steers sold to £520 from I Richardson, Catforth. Heifer stirks sold to £960 for British Blue cross from W Pinter Jnr, Clitheroe with Aberdeen Angus £910 from R&J Parkinson, Preesall. Other young heifers were £740 to £820 with well reared six month old heifers £600 to £700.

An entry of 27 feeding bulls sold to a top price of £1680 from WR&CL Lawrenson, Winmarleigh with ten month old Beef Shorthorns selling to £1010 from E&T Richardson, Garstang. Well reared British Blue cross sold to £840 from W Pinder, Clitheroe with seven month old British Blue cross £800 from Throstle Nest Farms, Pilling.

OTM Cattle

All cull cows forward averaged 166p/kg, topping at 254p/kg for a young Holstein Friesian from T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping with Montbeliarde to 199.5p/kg from WR&CM Lawrenson, Winmarleigh. Other heavy well finished dairy cows were regularly 185p/kg to 195p/kg with mediums types 165p/kg to 185p/kg and cows from the parlour 145p/kg to 160p/kg, depending on quality and type. Top grossing being a young Montbeliarde from WR&CM Lawrenson, Winmarleigh achieving £1830, with Holstein Friesian selling to £1559 from Lawsons Dairy Ltd, Cockerham. Only handful of beef cows forward, with all selling to a keen interest for finishing. Beef cows sold to 204p/kg on three occasions for Limousin cross cows, with other beef cows regularly 180p/kg to 200p/kg. Top grossing being a Limousin cross at £1554 from HR&KA Hodgson, Barbon.

OTM prime heifers sold to 271p/kg from R&K Jenkinson, Pilling with other beef heifers regularly 240p/kg to 270p/kg and dairy heifers 225p/kg to 240p/kg. Top grossing being a Holstein Friesian from J Huddleston, Brookhouse achieving £1578.

OTM steers sold to 281p/kg and £1759 for an Aberdeen Angus cross from O Butler, Kirkham. Cull bulls sold to 181p/kg for a Limousin cross from RG&L Holmes, Warton with others at £2000 from HR&KA Hodgson, Barbon. Diary bulls sold to 159p/kg and £1437 from PW&JM Norris & Son, Hornby.
