Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs, Prime Hoggs & Cast Sheep, Monday 13th May 2024.

Prime Lambs

More spring lambs were forward, meeting a sharp trade with an overall averaged of 438p/kg achieved. Suffolk lambs sold to £207 from WN&D Smith & Sons, Cockerham who sold other pens to £206. Smart bred Texel lambs sold to £196 from A&E Clarkson, Thurnham or 490p/kg. Other smart bred lambs were regularly selling at 475p/kg to 480p/kg. More spring lambs are required on a weekly basis, with new outlets keen to purchase.

Prime Hoggs

Hoggs saw well meated and fed hoggs in keen demand, with an overall market average of 367p/kg achieved for all sold. Leaner type hoggs met less demand. Texel hoggs sold twice to £206 from AG Butler, Hambleton with Beltexs from the same good home to £204. Heavy Suffolk hoggs sold to £201 from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe with heavy hogg regularly £190 to £200. A large show of hill bred hoggs saw Mule to £172 from KA Purtill, Wigan with Cheviots to £170 from Barker Farms, Cockerham and a ring full of 43kg Cheviot to £166 from the same home. Pens of Herdwicks sold to £161 from LA Bradshaw, Stalmine with Rough Fells to £155 from the same home.

Less ewes were forward today with the trade being a little less than recent highs, but still adding up nicely with an overall market average of £114 achieved. Texels sold to £186 from R&D Kellet, Cockerham with Charolais’s to £175 from MJ&JC Lund, Quernmore. Cheviots sold to £168 from R&D Kellet, Cockerham with Mules to £138 from the same home. Heavy Mules were regularly £120 to £135. Swaledales sold to £112 from T Ayrton & Son, Over Wyresdale.

Pigs

A much-improved quality entry of prime pigs saw gilts sell to £220 with others at £212, £208, £205 and £202. Other well finished white pigs were regularly £180 to £200, with colour pigs £160 to £180, depending on quality and type. A pen full of Large White cross gilts topped the market at 210p/kg, with other well finished gilts and hoggs 180p/kg to 200p/kg and boars at 150p/kg to 175p/kg. Cull sows sold to £100 or 45p/kg. A keen interest in store pigs saw boars sell to £70, with others at £59 and Tamworth’s to £56.

Prime Lambs

100 spring lambs were forward, with all selling to a shaper trade then first expected. Texels sold to £234 from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe with other pens to £233 from M&RW Stirzaker, Milnthorpe who also sold pens of Suffolks to the same price. Hampshire’s sold to £224 from J&O Galbraith, Endmoor. Dorsets sold to £216 from S Procter, Selside. The best bred lambs saw Texel cross Dorset’s to 482p/kg from S Procter, Selside with others to 480p/kg from JE Wightman, Lupton. An overall market average of 440p/kg was achieved.

A mixed show of 500 hoggs were forward, with once again meat and weight selling to a strong trade. Texel hoggs sold to £238 from J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston with others to £230 from PJ&ES Rogerson, Great Asby with this good home also selling other pens twice to £228. Cheviot hoggs sold to £200 from SH&LE Birkett, Nether Kellet with mules to £189 from JF&AW Sutton, Longsleddale. SBF hoggs sold to £179 from J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston. Pens of Herdwicks sold to £174 from AG Butler, Hambleton. Teeswaters sold to £168 from DE&J Waine, Longsleddale with Swaledales to £165 from WI&AM Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale. There is still plenty of interest for hoggs in the upcoming weeks from our ring side of eight buyers, with an overall average of 352p/kg achieved.

Another large entry of local farmer ewes sold to an animated trade, with an overall market averaged of £111.11. The best heavy pure ewes were in short supply, selling to £280 for heavy Texels with plenty of medium pure ewes and best first cross ewe £190 to £230. The strongest Mules sold to £168, with other heavy Mules £150 to £160, best mediums £125 to £140 with lighter weights £95 to £110. Pure hill sheep sold to £180 for Cheviots, £158 SBF, £148 Rough Fells, £140 Lleyns, £140 Swaledales and Herdwicks to £114. Mediums horned ewes were generally £80 to £95, with the smaller leaner end and several lambing casualties forward at realisation. Rams sold to £195 with other mediums weights generally £145 to £170. The best hill rams sold to £145 for Cheviots and horned rams £122.

Mule ewes with Dutch Spotted twin lambs sold to £260 from S&W Dickinson, Tebay. Texdale ewes with Texel lambs sold to £210 from C&S Dickinson, Ulverston with Texel cross Herdwick ewes with smart Beltex lambs selling to £185 from Messrs Hodgson, Rydal. Aged Cheviot ewes with Suffolk cross single lambs sold to £142 from Naddle Farms, Bampton. Swaledale ewes with single lambs sold to £138 from NA Allen, Winster.

Calves

The fortnightly sale of calves at Junction 36 saw the trade go up another gear. British Blue bulls were the pick of the day with the sale topping twice at £540 for five to six week olds from Dolphenby Farming Ltd, Penrith and A Pickthall, New Hutton. Numerous British Blue rearing bulls broke the £500 barrier. Charolais bulls sold to £490 from JH Towers & Sons, Tunstall with Limousins at £455 and Aberdeen Angus at £435 from this good home. A few younger bulls forward sold to £270 for three week old British Blues from TK Robinson & Sons, Old Hutton. A handful of dairy bred bulls in today sold to £270 for a Fleckvieh from R Heath, Bootle with black and whites £100 to £150.

Heifer calves sold to a top of £530 for a cracking Limousin from R&J Dodgson, Natland followed by Charolais’s at £485 from JH Towers & Sons, Tunstall and month olds sold to £335 for British Blues from HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick with Simmentals at the same price from MH&AR Robinson, Old Hutton.

With the grass growing outside, trade heated up. Aberdeen Angus bullocks sold to £1740 from BJ Bowness, Kendal who sold others to £1730. The strongest bullocks were regularly £1560 to £1600. Yearling bullocks saw plenty of demand, with Blondes selling to £1440 from SJ&NS Wood, Windermere. A pair of Luings sold to £1370 from JW&TE Sharp, Lyth with Limousins to £1320 from S Wood, Hawkshead. Grazing bullock as were regularly

selling at £950 to £1050.

Limousin heifers sold to £1590 from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton with British Blue heifers to £1380 from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe who sold large pens to £1310. The strongest heifers sold at £1300 to £1400. Yearling grazing heifers were well sort after, with the best to £1300 from WA Hodgeson, Selside. Aberdeen Angus sold to £1260 from T&D Wright, Wray with the youngest smart bred sorts £900 to £1000.

A small show of bulls forward today, with new men round the ring ensuring a strong trade was seen. Eight month old South Devon bulls sold to £1070 from AT Threlkeld, Satterthwaite with Shorthorns to £1060 for JK Higgs, Ulverston.

OTM Cattle

An increases number of cows forward, sold to an overall 178p/kg, for an entry of predominantly dairy cows. Of the few beef cows forward, these sold to a top 234p/kg for Aberdeen Angus cross from TM&D Dobson, Crosthwaite. Other stronger end beef cows were regularly 200p/kg to 220p/kg, with feeding types 185p/kg to 200p/kg. Top grossing being an Aberdeen Angus from MW&PA Rollason, Meathop achieving £1809. Dairy cows sold to 209p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from Strickland Hill Farm, Witherslack with other stronger end dairy cross 185p/kg to 200p/kg, with the best parlour types 170p/kg to 185p/kg and lighter weight and leaners sorts 145p/kg to 160p/kg. Top grossing Black and White being a Holstein Friesian from Jenkin Cragg, Kendal achieving £1832.

OTM steers averaging 208p/kg, selling to 214p/kg for a Belted Galloways from S&A Gardner, Carnforth and £1164 for a Hereford from S&M Carter, Witherslack.

OTM heifers sold to 229.5p/kg for an Aberdeen Angus cross from RA&E Edmondson, Levens with dairy heifers to 219.5p/kg and £1376 for a Holstein Friesian from RR&JA Knowles, Docker. Cull stock bulls sold to 209.5p/kg and £2055 for a Limousin from J&SE Woof, Dent with Herefords to 174.5p/kg and £1832 from DJ Dickinson, Ulverston.

Pedigree Beef

The annual May show and sale of pedigree bulls and females saw a strong trade for all sold. Pedigree Charolais bulls sold to 3500gns for Trefaldwyn Tokyo consigned by RA Owen, who sold others at fourteen months to 2700gns. An eight year old Limousin bull Whittakerhall Navigator consigned by DP Escolme sold to 2500gns. Native sired bull saw Herefords sell to 2600gns from B&S Milby, with Amberfield 1 Wizard to 2500gns consigned by Messrs Hewson.

A consigned of Charolais heifers with calves from GJ&G Billington, Garstang saw their best sell to 3600gns and 3200gns with a heifer calves at foot.

The first cow and calf sale of the spring saw plenty of interest with Saler heifers with Limousin calves selling to £2500 from JE&DJ Hutchinson, Sedbergh who sold others to £2200. First cross British Blue heifers with month old Limousin heifer calves sold to £2200 from CD Sligher & LJ Eaton, Sedbergh with the same home selling others to £2100. An eight year old cow with an Aberdeen Angus heifer calf sold to £1500 from R&SA Rawsthorne, Cark in Cartmel.

Calves and Weanlings

40 weaned and reared calves, sold to a packed auditorium of bidders. Six month old British Blue cross bulls sold to £760, with others at £710 and younger recently weaned bulls were £450 to £550. Steers sold to £710 for five month old Aberdeen Angus cross, with other younger Aberdeen Angus to £620 and dairy steers to £480. Heifers sold to £640 for five month old British Blue cross with younger native sired heifers regularly £420 to £480. A nice entry of rearing calves were forward in Lancaster today, with a strong trade witnessed for all types and classes. The sale topped at £580 for a Charolais bull calf from JM&MH France & Son, Littledale with Aberdeen Angus cross close behind at £545 from J&G Thornley Ltd, Kirkham. All strongest bull calves of all breeds broke the £500 barrier. An increased entry of dairy bulls were forward this week, with these selling to £250 for a Friesian from Barber Farms, Claughton on Brock. Numerous strong Friesian bulls make in excess of £200. A nice show of heifer calves were forward, with these selling to £440 for a Charolais from JM&MH France & Son, Littledale with this home also selling British Blues to £410. An abundance of heifer calves made £300 plus, with Charolais at £395 from JT&B Fox, Quernmore and Blues at £355 from AD&RL Milner, Claughton on Brock and Herefords at £340 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. A good trade was seen for the youngest calves with three week old British Blue heifers selling to £280 from MJ&H Atkinson, Quernmore.

Store Cattle

No let up in the store cattle trade, with all steers forward averaged £1335 and all heifers averaging £1285.

Strongest steers sold to £1900 for a Simmental cross with others regularly £1600 to £1750. The next draw down, suitable for grazing, were £1320 to £1500 with buyers ringside keen to fill the sheds and the fields.

Heifer sold to a top price of £1700 for British Blue cross, with other stronger end heifer regularly £1400 to £1500. Younger heifers were £1150 to £1300. More cattle are required every week to fulfil buyer requirements.

OTM Cattle

Another quality entry of cull cows, saw all cows averaged 181p/kg with over three quarter being dairy cows. Only a handful of beef cows forward today, selling to 224p/kg for a Limousin cow from RM Wilson, Selside and 221p/kg from B&SE Carter, Ellel. Other beef cows were generally 195p/kg to 210p/kg. Top grossing being a British Blue cross from G Beresford & Son, Kirkby in Furness grossing at £1727. The better end of the dairy cows sold to 197.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from SW&K Metcalfe & Son, Carnforth and RR&JA Knowles, Docker. Others sold to 185p/kg to 195p/kg, best parlour types 175p/kg to 185p/kg with lighter weight and the leanest 140p/kg to 160p/kg. Top grossing diary was a Fleckvieh from EW&R Towers, Hornby grossing £1595. OTM heifers sold to 269.5p/kg for a Limousin cross from WS Burrow Ltd, Silverdale with other better end beef and dairy bred heifers 225p/kg to 240p/kg, medium 205p/kg to 220p/kg. Top grossing being a black and white from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale achieving £1664. All Holstein Friesian averaged 225p/kg.

OTM steers sold to 264.5p/kg and £1631 for Aberdeen Angus from A Kirkby & Co, Pilling.
