Prime Hoggs

A special show for prime hoggs to celebrate this occasion was kindly judged by Dave Morland of Westmorland Services Ltd, Tebay who had twenty show pens presented before him. The championship rosette was awarded to a pair of Beltex x hoggs showed by Mr A Butler, Hambleton which later sold for £180 each to Mr J Blenkhorn on behalf of Yorkshire Halal Meats Ltd. The reserve championship rosette was won by EW&JR Parkinson, Clitheroe showing a pair of Beltex hoggs which were later purchased by the judge for £142. The show classes for five prime hoggs saw GM&A Jackson, Little Eccleston awarded first prize with a pen of five Texel x hoggs achieving £128. R Lawrence, Grange Over Sands topped the Mule class with the pure hill class won by AEA Harrison, Kentmere for a pen of Rough Fells.

1162 prime hoggs were forward at the weekly sale with heavy weight and well finished hoggs continuing to sell to a premium. Away from the show heavy weight hoggs sold to £150 for Texel x from MW&MR Black, Staveley who sold others at £147. Suffolk x hoggs sold to £145 from G Rylie, Carnforth with Texel x selling to £141 from T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping, with others at £140 from MW&PA Rollason, Meathorp and J&E Nuttall, Old Hutton. Heavy weight Mules sold to £127 from T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping with Cheviots selling to £122 from Stockdale Farms, Sedbergh and Charollais x to £121 from LF Horton & Son, Leigh.

Standard weight well finished hoggs sold to £120 for Texel x from M Bennett, Penrith with others at £116 from J&E Nuttall, Old Hutton and Mules to £99 from GM&A Jackson, Little Eccleston.

A large proportion of lighter weight hoggs saw Continentals sell to £97 from D&J Woof, Sedbergh with Cheviots to £85 from GR Park & Sons, Whinfell, Gritstone to £83 from GJ&G Ibbetson, Wray and Herdwicks to £73 from Messrs Clegg & Bennett, Broughton in Furness. Well-bred and finished Continental hoggs regularly achieved 250-275p/kg with first cross lambs 230-245p/kg and pure hill lambs 205-220p/kg depending on wight and finish.

Cast Sheep

A lesser show of ewes were forward with meat selling to a massive premium and many more could have easily been sold. The star of the show was a pair of Charollais ewes from B&D Willison & Son, Tebay selling to £170. Pure bred ewes were regularly selling at the £150-£160 mark. A run of Texel x Mule ewes from B&D Willison & Son, Tebay peaked at £128. Mule ewes sold to £116 twice from DE&SM Moorhouse, Natland and DC D & JD Taylor, Skelsmergh. The best end Mules were regularly selling at the £110 plus. Medium fit Mule ewe were regularly selling well over the £90 mark. Hill ewes would be a bid or two dearer on the week, Cheviots sold to a top of £112 from CG Taylor, Skelsmergh with Rough Fells selling to £84 from Fishwick Brothers, Longsleddale. Swaledales topped at £83 from B&D Willison & Son, Tebay with the best regularly selling over the £70 mark.

All calves sold to their full value once again at junction 36, selling to a top of £300 for British Blue bulls from JW&TE Sharp, Lyth with other British Blue bulls selling to £290 from A Pickthall, Middleton. Native bulls sold to £255 for Aberdeen Angus’s from TW&CL Long, Ulverston with other Angus bulls selling to £250 from A Pickthall.

Heifers sold to a top of £255 for British Blues from FB Dunnings & Sons, Orton with Continental bred heifers selling well over the £200 mark. Friesian bulls sold to a top of £80 from JR Robinson & Son, Nook with rearing types at the £40-£50 mark.

Limousin stirks topped at £880 for a bullock from M Kitchen & S Smith, Kirkby Stephen. Aberdeen Angus bullocks sold to a top of £765 from AE&PC Capstick, Milnthorpe with British Blue heifers selling to a top of £765 from F&TE Park, Crook. Limousins sold to £745 from M Kitchen & S Smith.

Store Cattle

Seeing is believing as trade goes up through the gears, with cattle £50-£100 dearer on the fortnight. The heifer trade was outstanding with 20-month-old British Blue heifers selling to £1460 from C Wilson, Witherslack with Limousin heifers selling to £1330 from Brown Brothers, Dent. Strong meated heifers were regularly away, selling at the £1350-£1400 mark. Yearling heifers saw another level today, topping at £1390 for a British Blue from Brown Brothers, Dent with Saler yearlings selling to £1130 from JJ&J Woof & Sons, Dent. Grazing heifers saw a top of £955 for eight month old Limousins from AP&RL Crowe, Ulverston.

Bullocks saw a top of £1400 from TW Nelson, Kendal with Hereford bullocks selling to £1390 from DJ Dickinson, Haverthwaite and Limousin bullocks selling to £1340 from DM Bargh, Morecambe. Yearling bullocks were another sharp trade with many more needed to fulfil buyers requirements. Salers sold to a top of £1190 from JJ&J Woof, Dent who sold others to £1175 with Limousins selling to £1190 for a pen of five from MW&M Hodgson, Grange

Over Sands. A run of dairy bred British Blue bullocks from G&SM Stephenson sold to £960 at eight months old with dairy bred Hereford from the same home selling to £900.

OTM and Cast Cattle

The fortnightly sale of cull cows saw an overall market averaged of 185p/kg achieved with again over half the entry being dairy cull cows. Beef bred cows sold to a top price of 249.5p/kg for a young Stabiliser cow from A Dixon & Son, Selside with a ten year old Limousin x cow from T Metcalfe, Sedbergh achieving 224.5p/kg with other well fleshed beef cows regularly 200p/kg -210p/kg. Medium beef cows suitable for finishing sold to 199.5p/kg on three occasions for a British Blue x from PW Clarke, Crossthwaite, a Blonde from R Keith, Briggsteer and a Longhorn x from E Taylforth, Hawkshead. Other beef cows suitable for finishing were generally 180p/kg-195p/kg. Top grossing beef cow today was a Stabilisers from A Dixon & Son, Selside achieving £1684 who sold others at £1672 with Hereford cow from G&ID Postlethwaite, Howgill achieving £1613.

Dairy cows sold to 197.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Dennison, Ulverston and for a dairy Shorthorn from J&SA Barton, Claughton on Brock.

Other heavy well fleshed dairy cows were regularly 185p/kg-195p/kg. Medium cows were 170p/kg-185p/kg with parlour type cows 145p/kg160p/kg. Top grossing dairy cow was a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Dennison, Ulverston achieving £1728 with another Holstein Friesian selling to £1644 from JR Robinson & Son, Nook and £1332 from S&M Cooper, Ulverston.

A dedicated section for TB 1 restricted cull cows saw a top price of 187.5p/kg and £1490 for a Fleckvieh from R&J Dodgson, Natland with Holstein Friesian and Montbeliarde selling to 177.5p/kg from B&MJ Nelson & Son, Heversham and JJ&MA Park & Son, Helsington.

OTM heifers sold to 221p/kg for an MRI from J&H Bland & Son Ltd, Levens who sold Holstein Friesains to £1534. Steers sold to 239.5p/kg and £1393 for a Limousin from MW&M Hodgson, Cartmel Fell.

Cull bulls sold to 219.5p/kg for a Hereford from J&H Bland & Son, Levens and £2156 from JJ&MA Park & Son, Helsington.

Eleven active buyers were ring side today, all keen to secure cattle of all classes and types with over 100 cattle easily sold.

Calves & Weanlings

Calf numbers and the trade is on the rise at NWA Lancaster, with several new and returning customers in attendance. Weanable calves continue to attract the strongest bidding, this week selling to £470 for a twelve week old Charolais x from WG Farms Ltd, Cockerham. British Blues sold to £435 from Tom Barron Farms Ltd, Woodplumpton and Aberdeen Angus’s to £410 from F&JM Kelsall & Son, Bleasdale. Medium beef bull calves for rearing sold to £400 for a Charolais x from JE&S Seedall, Mellor with Aberdeen Angus achieving £385 from F&JM Kelsall & Son, Bleasdale and British Blue x at £365 from Tom Barron Farms Ltd. There was a large number of young bull calves forward which sold to £300 for a month old British Blue x from Barber Farms Ltd, Claughton on Brock with Charolais x selling to £300 from WG Farms, Cockerham. British Blue x sold to £295 from J Bargh &

Son, Morecambe and Aberdeen Angus x to £290 from Cote Farm Partnership, Nether Kellet. An eye-catching Beef Shorthorn from WB Winder & Co, Broughton in Furness sold at £255 with young Limousin to £230 from D&K Howarth, Hambleton. Dairy bull calves, all being sold under a month old, sold to £125 from Stanworth Agricultural Ltd, Chipping with Holstein Friesian £65 from JE&J Pye & Son, Quernmore and C&J Smith, St Michaels.

Weanable heifer calves sold to £420 from WG Farms Ltd, with Aberdeen Angus x selling to £300 from F&JM Kelsall, Bleasdale. Younger heifer calves sold to £275 for a Charolais x from JE&S Seedall, with British Blues x to £270 from Tom Barron Farms Ltd, who sold others at £260. The youngest heifer calves were generally £140 to £180 depending on breed and quality. Bull stirks saw six month old Holstein Friesians selling to £400 from RE&P Miller, Barnacre and H&SD Cornthwaite & Son, Garstang with four mouth olds selling to £375. Six month old Aberdeen Angus x heifer sold to £500 from RE&P Miller, Barnacre.

Trade which has to be seen to be believed at NWA Lancaster, with all steers today averaged £1332 and heifers £1210. Buyers ring side keen to secure additional and replacement stock on the back of the high prime cattle trade. 300 plus store cattle can be easily sold every week at Lancaster and are required to satisfy buyers demand. Steers sold to £1740 for a pair of British Blues from returning vendor D&N Davis, Nateby closely followed by Limousin x at £1700 from H Chapman & Son, Middleton with Blonde d'Aquitaine selling to £1670 from SA Hill, Slyne and Charolais’s at £1660 from H Chapman & Son, Middleton. Native sired steers sold to £1660 for Aberdeen Angus’s and Herefords from J Oddie & Son, Blackburn with other Aberdeen Angus achieving £1320 from MG&J Parker, Wennington and £1600 from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse. OTM Cattle

Cull cows were again an extremely fast trade with an overall market average of 185p/kg and £1178 with a large proportion of today’s sale being dairy cows straight out of the parlour. Can you afford not to sell at North West Auctions?

Only nine beef cows were forward today, selling to an exceptionally high trade. Topping at 259.5p/kg and £2283 for a Limousin from JG&PH Thompson, Selside closely followed by Charolais x cow from GR Bargh & Co, Caton selling at 239.5p/kg and £1901. Other beef cows were generally 215p/kg-230p/kg with those suitable for finishing keenly sort after. Dairy cows sold to 214.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from AT Burrow & Son, Hornby with others at 209.5p/kg from RT Halhead, Cockerham and 207.5p/kg from PW&JM Norris & Son, Lancaster and 207.5p/kg to JT Wilson, Bay Horse. Cull bulls sold to 294.5p/kg and £1743 for a thirty four month old Limousin from M&L Preece, Kirkby Lonsdale. Fairy bull sold to 199.5p/kg from H Kent, Cockerham and £1385 from PW&JM Norris & Son.
