Weekly Report and Newsletter - 17th September J36 Rural Auction Centre: Show & Sale of NEMSA Gimmer Lambs - Saturday 11th September 2021 North West Auctions held is annual Mule Gimmer Lamb sale on behalf of the Kendal Branch of NEMSA. There were 7413 gimmer lambs forward which sold to a market average of £124.88, an increase of £30.61 on the year. The sale peaked at £550 for lambs shown by first time vendors S Allan & Sons, Dufton. Other noted prices included the Champion pen of ten, from AC & K Pye, Abbeystead at £290 whom sold another pen of ten at £240.
Selside lambs proved popular as £195 was achieved on two occasions by TA & J Dixon and JA & CA Gibson. This was closely followed by Messrs Hodgson, Windermere achieving £192. Top pens of lambs generally selling at £145-£170 with keen interest shown for the middle run of lambs suitable for tupping, generally £118-£130, running lambs regularly selling at £110-£115. The much-desired Bruce Willison memorial shield for the best run of lambs in the market was kindly judged by Chris Harrison and awarded to TA & JA Dixon, Selside for an excellent run of 318 lambs. Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep - Monday 13th September 2021 PRIME LAMBS Once again, the Monday morning sale of prime lambs at NWA Lancaster saw a keen and competitive trade for all classes and types, with a market averaged of 232p/kg achieved. Well finished lambs were the order of the day, selling to a marking top of 274p/kg for Texel x lambs from RA Richards, Lancaster. Beltex x lambs sold to 272p/kg from JS Horner, Ingleton, with other pens of ¾ and pure-bred lambs regularly selling at 260-270p/kg. Charollais x lambs sold to 233p/k from J France, Garstang with Suffolk x lambs from WN & D Smith & Sons, Cockerham selling to 226p/kg. A reduced number of hill lambs forward today, with many vendors attention turn to breeding sheep sales. Those forwards were well rewarded with Mules selling to 232p/kg from P&C Parker, Greenhow with others to 222p/kg from CF Hargreaves, Overton and Horned lambs to 212p/kg from T Smith, Pilling. Leading the sale today was a consignment of Texel x lambs from JS Horner, Ingleton selling at £130 and £127, with others achieving £124 from both TR Prickett, Hutton Roof and JM & MH France & Son, Littledale. Other heavy weight lambs regularly £105 -£115. Medium weight lambs sold to £110 for Beltex x from T&L Kirkham, Chorley and Suffolk x sold to £107 from J France, Garstang. CAST EWE A large entry of cull sheep forward today saw a fast and competitive trade with buyers once again keen to purchase early on a Monday morning. Heavy well fleshed ewes attracted the keenest interest seeing Texels sell at £138 M&S Blease, Carnforth, £137 J France, Garstang and £134 R & DL Cornthwaite, Nateby. Suffolk ewes sold to a top of £113 again from J France, Garstang whom also topped the Mule section achieving £95. The next sale of store lambs is on Saturday the 2nd October, as part of the annual ‘Hill Fair Day’ vendors are encouraged to enter all classes of breeding and store sheep with confidence. J36 Rural Auction Centre: J36 Beltex and Boys Are Back in Town Show & Sale Monday 13th September 2021 The Northern Beltex Club sale sees shearling rams sell to 1800gns and shearling ewes to 1400gns. A feature of tonight’s sale was the annual prize show and sale of Beltex sheep on behalf of The Northern Beltex Club, which this year saw the pre-sale show kindly judged by local noted breeder Mr James Wannop, Heaton-
with-Oxcliffe. The championship rosette was awarded to Ainstable Felloe a shearling ram shown by Mr B Hall, Carlisle. This ram was sired by Kingledores Engleburt and out of a home bred ewe Ainstable Delux. The reserve champion rosette was awarded to the first prize gimmer shearling Ainstable Fairwell again shown by Mr B Hall and also sired by Kingledores Engleburt. The sale saw a top price of 1800gns achieved for the Champion selling to local enthusiast Miss Robyn Allen, Ings. Mr B Hall sold another shearling ram, Ainstable Fang, achieving 1100gns. Other pedigree Beltex rams regularly selling at 400-600gns. Aged Texel ewes sold to £280 from P & A Sowerby, Tebay. Beulah ewes sold to £270 from M Radcliffe, Derbyshire. Gimmer lambs sold to £300 for a Texel from Messrs Hewson, Carlisle who sold others at £250. The evening sale of breeding rams, saw a ring side of buyer keen to purchase rams with power and strength for optimum prime lamb production. Texel x shearlings sold to a top price of £580 from JR Capstick, Ingleton who sold others at £550 as did M&S Blease, Carnforth. Suffolk shearlings achieved a top price of £500 from A Gardner, Bay Horse who had others at £400 closely followed by D Metcalfe, Dalton in Furness who sold at £380. Cross bred lambs achieved £400 for Beltex x from E Benn, Barnard Castle and J Bargh, Morecambe. Several aged rams forward today saw Texels sell to £400 from M Bowman, Kirkby Stephen with others from M Grunhill, Meathop selling at £380. A small number of ram lambs were forward today with the best being a pen of Suffolks from Messrs Hewson, Carlisle selling between £350-£550, with J Park, Lancaster selling a Suffolk lamb at £250. J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Pigs, Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep - Tuesday 14th September 2021 SALE OF PIGS The first pig sale of September saw an increased entry in all sections, with all pigs selling to full value, inline with other national sales where the pig market is reporting downward pressure. The sale commences with prime pigs which saw a top price of £126 achieved for Pietrain x Duroc boars from G Hargreaves, Lancaster with Duroc x Saddleback gilts from J&L Tyson, Carnforth selling at £115. Other prime pigs generally selling at £95-£108 depending on weight and finish, with buyers once again showing preference towards gilts and castrated males. A top p/kg of 313 was achieved by G Hargreaves, Lancaster this time selling Pietrian x Duroc gilts, with White gilts and boars generally selling at between 98-105p/kg. An increased entry of cull pigs saw sows sell to £125 from TA & DH Knipe, Ulverston with cull boars selling to £105 from G Hargreaves, Lancaster. Top p/kg for cull sows was 58p/kg for heavy weight Large Whites from TH & DH Knipe, Ulverston. An increased entry of store and weaner pigs saw a top price of £88 achieved for Pietrain x gilts from G Hargreaves, Lancaster who sold boars at £86. Weaners sold to a top price of £40 from R Holland, Millom who sold others at £33. Today’s sale featured two sows each with a litter, which sold to a top price of £180. The next sale of pigs is on Tuesday the 28th September and vendors are advised to pre enter pigs to assist with canvasing for buyers and organising the sale.
PRIME LAMBS The weekly sale of prime lambs saw an increased entry forward, with vendors becoming free of the six days standstill from recent sheep sales. Once again well finished lambs were the easiest to sell, with buyers also showing preference for weight and confirmation. The sale peaked at £140 on two occasions from WT Whittaker & Son, Neither Kellett and GB Holt, Helmshore. Other heavy weight lambs regularly solded at £118 to £135. Medium weight lambs generally sold at £92 to £104, with buyers showing caution to lighter weight under finished lambs. Hill bred lambs saw a top price of £98.50 from NJ Strickland & Son, Whinfell and R&E Ladds, Kendal, with others at £98 from EW & JR Parkinson, Dunsop Bridge. Cheviots sold to £82 from S Crompton, Crossthwaite with Herdwicks selling to £78.50 from G Probert, Clitheroe. All lambs forward today averaged 218p/kg with a top price of 271p/kg achieved for Texel x from J&O Galbraith & Son, Endmoor. Texel x lambs from JA Airey, New Hutton and Beltex x lambs from PD & PJ Mason, Burton in Kendal both achieved 263p/kg. Well finished pens of ¾ and pure-bred lambs regularly sold at 230-245p/kg. Lancaster Auction Mart: Annual Show & Sale of Mule Gimmer Lambs - Wednesday 15th September 2021 Lancaster Auction held its great annual show and sale of 1500 Mule gimmer lambs, once again attracted a good ring side of local buyers, as well as our well-travelled buyers. Lancaster enjoyed a firm overall market average of £128.10, an increase of £23 on the year. A strong line up of lambs forward to the pre-sale show which was judged by Dennis Elliott, Penrith and Daniel Branson, Towcester who we thank for their time and expertise. The first prize pen of 10 gimmer lambs and winning the Alf Burrows memorial cup came from W&A Cornall, Barnacre with these going on to sell for £175. A successful day for the Cornall Family saw them awarded the first prize pen of 20 selling for £145. Taking top spot was AC&K Pye, Abbeystead selling their first pen of 10 for £200, this was closely followed by RH&C Ayrton, Abbeystead selling to £190. Other noted prices saw JS&S Atkinson, Scorton sell to £180, followed by S Park, Aughton sold to £170, B&SE Carter to £165 and at £160 was WI&A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale and T Ayrton & Sons, Over Wyresdale. Plenty of pens of strong tupping lambs easily selling between £130-£150, with lighter faced tupping lambs regularly selling in the mid £120’s. With running lambs selling between £105-£115. The £50 prize for the vendor with the highest average for a run of 50 lambs not including a prize pen, was awarded to JS & S Atkinson, Scorton averaging £146. Younger rearing calves today made up the bulk of the sale with Angus x calves selling to £375 from RJ

Dairy bull calves sold to an exceptional top price of £400 for EW & RM Towers, Hornby. STORE CATTLE The catalogue entry of 570 store cattle, which saw a full ring side of buyers in attendance. The pre-sale show was kindly judged by Jonathan Beresford who we thank for his time and expertise. We like to take this opportunity to thank all the vendors for the quality of cattle put forward to the show, after much time and deliberation he awarded the champion rosette to the first prize Limousin bullock from FI&ME Little, Barrows Green which went on to top the market, selling to £1640. The reserve champion rosette was given to the first prize Limousin heifer from GH Jones, Far Sawrey who sold to £1380. Out side the show, trade was buoyant from start to finish, with all vendors leaving happy with their days trading. Limousin bullocks sold to a top of £1460 from MA&JA Winn, Burneside. British Blue heifers at 10-month-old from AT Rogerson, Chipping sold to £1410. Strong well finished cattle saw marvellous returns with Aberdeen Angus heifers from JW&HM Metcalfe & Son, Gatebeck selling to £1400. Yearling cattle once again would be the trade of the day with the best end bullocks regularly selling between the £1200 and £1300 mark, with a top of £1350 from MW&M Hodgson, Cartmel Fell who also sold a lovely Limousin heifer at the same age to the same price. The best end yearling heifers saw a keen interest from purchasers, which were regularly selling to the £1080-£1150 mark. The next level down yearling heifer sold to the mid to late nine hundred. OTM CATTLE Another strong trade for all classes of cull cows, with an overall market average of 141p/kg. The sale peaked at 207.5p/kg for a young Limousin cow from R H M & S Boyren, Colton who sold others at 189.5p/kg. Other heavy beef cows regularly sold between 140p/kg and 160p/kg, depending on age and quality. Beef cows saw a top price of £1352 and £1330 achieved from R H M & S Boyren, Colton who sold others at £1295. A large entry of dairy
cows forward today with Holstein Friesian selling to 164.5p/kg from Jenkin Cragg Farms, Kendal, with others to 157.5p/kg from JJ&MA Park & Son, Sizergh whom also sold Montbeliardes at 137.5p.kg and Fleckviehs at 129.5p/kg. Dairy cull cows sold to a top price of £1237 for a heavy weight Holstein Friesian from Jenkin Cragg Farms, Kendal who sold others at £1230, closely followed by Messrs Sowerby, Drybeck achieving £1158. Other heavy and well fleshed dairy cows regularly sold between £950-£1020. British Blue x cows sold to £1107 from S Proctor, Selside with native bred cows selling to £1027 for Aberdeen Angus x from TJ&K Beaty, Windemere. OTM heifers today sold to a top price of 187.5p/kg for Hereford x from RJ&J Gardner, Kendal who sold others at 184.5p/kg. Dairy heifer sold to 174.5p/kg for Holstein Friesian from DR&C Galbraith, Grayrigg. The top grossing OTM heifer today was £1263 from RJ&J Gardner, Kendal. The next sale of cattle at J36 is on Thursday 30th September, this sale will include the monthly sale of beef breeding cattle. Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Calves, Store and OTM Cattle - 17th September 2021 CALVES AND WEANLINGS Lancaster had a bumper entry of 130 calves and weanlings forward with all specifications eagerly bid for. A consignment of 12-week-old British Blues from J&G Thornley, Kirkham saw bull calves to £525 and £500, this was followed by a much admired 8-week-old British Blue bull from Barbers Farms, Claughton on Brock selling to £480 with other 8-week-old British Blue bulls to £465 from Tom Barron Farms, Woodplumpton. Charolais bull calves peaked at £475 from TM Townley, Over Wyresdale. A run of Hereford weanlings from TE & M Kidd, Ellel sold bulls to £470 and heifers to £465, plenty of good quality calves today sold in the region of £400 and more. Black and White bull calves twice peaked at £220 from RE&P Miller, Barnacre with all eagerly bid for, as Black and White calves averaged £118. Limousin bullocks took top spot this week selling to £1500 from T&M Halhead, Priest Hutton with Simmentals from the same home selling to £1420. Other leading prices for continental bullocks saw British Blues sell to £1440 from K&DE Woodhouse, Ellel. Native cattle always meet plenty of demand at Lancaster, with Aberdeen Angus bullocks selling to £1460 from W&A Cardwell, Stalmine. A pen of four South Devons from TE&A Galbraith, Crooklands sold to £1450. Plenty of strong forward bullocks easily selling in excess of £1300 mark. The heifer trade peaked at £1360 for a Limousin from JW Atkinson, Bentham with others from the same home selling at £1350. There was a good entry 124 cast cows forward this week which was met by the usual busy ring of buyers ensuring Lancaster cows continue to be one of the strongest trades in the area. There was an overall market average of 141p/kg. As per usual OTM heifers were eagerly bid for with British Blues selling to 209.5p/kg or £1342 from AG&GM Rollinson, Killington. This was followed by Limousin heifers to 204.5p/kg from RJ & H Preece, Roeburndale West, with Limousin OTM heifers peaking at £1286. Limousin cast steers sold to 199.5p/kg from R&K Jenkinson, Pilling. Black and White OTM heifers sold to 189.5p/kg or £1273 from JE ME & JP Seed, Claughton-on-Brock.
