North West Texel Breeders Club 40th Anniversary Show & Sale Sunday 8th 2021

North West Auctions were proud to host the 40th anniversary show and sale of 324 pedigree Texel rams and females on behalf of the North West Texel Breeders Club. The largest entry to date for this sale at Junction 36, saw the best quality offering seen to date. With credit going to all our vendors. The sale had been eagerly anticipated and saw a packed ring side with sheep purchased throughout the United Kingdom.

Some strong classes for the judge Mr Roy Campbell of the Cowal flock to cast his eye over, who we thank for his time and expertise. The championship rosette was awarded to lot number 278 for the first prize gimmer shearling from the new members class, she was consigned by Thomas Ayrton of the Ayrton flock. This much-admired gimmer was sired by Garngour Alabama out of a Knap Vicious Sid ewe. After much eager bidding in the ring, she was purchased by Robert Garth and Sarah Priestley, Bentham for 2000gns. The reserve champion rosette was awarded to lot 73 from Gordon Gray, with the first prize ram lamb Ettrick Eli this was sired by Claybury Dunkirk and out of a Clinterty Yuga Khan, this tup lamb went on to sell for 1300gns purchased by AF Harker of the Bendgate flock.

Topping the sale today at 3000gns was lot 77 Eden Valley Expresso consigned by Richard Wilson, Appleby. This highly rated tup lamb which was awarded second prize at the Great Yorkshire Show and third prize in today’s presale show. Sired by Craig Douglas Dancer and out of a Knock Yankee ewe, this was purchased by Keating and Henery, Buttercross Flock. Other noted prices for ram lambs were 2000gns for Ettrick Emu sired by Claybury Dunkirk consigned by Gordon Gray and was purchased by Katie Birkett, Burton in Kendal. Closely following this at 1800gns was Sportsman E Z Rider who was sired by Garngour Detroit and consigned by Boden and Davis and purchased by HJ Driver. The Sportsman flock also enjoyed a successful day with the gimmer shearlings selling to 2000gns for a Garngour Craftsman Daughter, with another gimmer sired by the same sire selling to 1800gns. The shearling ram trade today saw them in great demand with the consignment from TA & R Laird of the Camwell flock selling to 1300gns, 1200gns and 1100gns. Also achieving 1300gns was M Evans of the Rhaeadr flock, this was closely followed by 1200gns from James Porter with Teilo Dyfalbarhad. The gimmer lambs peaked at 800gns from Guy Reed of the Alpha flock with this much-admired sparkly gimmer lamb sired by the renowned Auldhouseburn Billy the Kid. Shearling rams sold to 1300gns and averaged £716.

Ram lambs sold to 3000gns and averaged £615.

Aged ewes sold to 450gns and averaged 450gns.

Gimmer shearlings sold to £2000gns and averaged £747.

Gimmer lambs sold to £800gns and averaged £470.

Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Spring Lambs and Cast Sheep - Monday 9th August 2021 PRIME LAMBS Lancaster enjoyed a sharper trade than anticipated following reports of trades over the weekend. There was an entry of 675 forward selling to an overall market average of 225p/kg, with 45-50kg lambs averaging 230p/kg. The trade today saw well finished lambs in big demand with buyers slightly cautious of purchasing lean lambs. Taking top spot this week was heavy weight Suffolk lambs selling to £150 from Alice O’Brian, Witten Le Wear. The Texel trade peaked at £124 and £120 from CA Fletcher, Goosnargh with both pens of lambs purchased by Gregory Williams butchers, Lancaster. Other noted Texel prices were £119 from H Birkett & Son, Overton and £116 from

RM Gornall, Forton. Plenty more pens of Texel lambs easily selling around the £110 mark. Heavy weight Hampshire lambs sold to £123 from JS Hornet, Ingleton. The trade for Beltex lambs peaked at £116 from A&FM Bollands & Sons, Ellel, with Charollais lambs peaking at £113 from JS Horner, Ingleton. Top p/kg this week was 263 from for Beltex lambs from JS Horner, Ingleton, with others selling to 260p/kg from Ian Richardson, Catforth. Mule lambs this week sold to £85 weighing 40kg from S Park, Aughton.

The prime lamb trade has seen numbers tighter throughout the country today, as the day goes on many markets are reporting good averages with lambs required at Junction 36 tomorrow.

CAST SHEEP All buyers in attendance today were keen to purchase cast sheep Texel x ewes lead the way today, selling to £132 and £130 from R & DL Cornthwaite, Nateby with other Texel x ewes to £130 from E Hartley, Hornby and £128 from GF & EE Holt, Chipping. Plenty more strong Texel ewes selling £120 plus. Mule ewes peaked at £124 for a big ewe from D&E Whittaker, Quernmore with other Mule ewes to £108 from A&FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel.

Upland ewes saw Cheviots sell to £94 from R Doran, Winmarleigh followed by others to £91 from KA Purtill, Wigan. Horned sheep sold to £85 from J&CW Metcalfe & Son, Quernmore with Swaledales to £76 from RG&H Preece, Roeburndale West.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep - Tuesday 10th August 2021 SPRING LAMBS What a difference a week makes, with a big thank you going to those who remained loyal and brought their lambs this week and enjoyed a strong trade.

There was an overall market average of 237p/kg with 45 – 50kg lambs averaging 240p/kg as well as handy weights achieving the same price.

There was a full ring of buyers in attendance today plus a new buyer at the ringside which saw the trade twice top at £127. This was firstly for 51kg Beltex lambs from JA & KJ Allen, Ings. Also achieving £127 were 51kg Texel lambs from N & SM Robinson, Low Gill. Other noted prices for heavyweight lambs were £123.50 from Bob Lawrence, Grange over Sands, and £123 from JE Nuttall, Old Hutton. A consignment of heavyweight lambs from DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland saw Suffolks sell to £123 and Texels to £119.50. Many more pens of heavyweight lambs easily selling in the late hundreds and teens.

Best confirmation lambs today saw Beltex at 281p/kg from Abigail Winn, Burneside with other Beltex lambs to 270p/kg from Bargh Contractors, Heaton with Oxcliffe. Plenty more pens of well finished, better confirmation lambs readily selling around the 260p/kg mark.

More upland lambs are beginning to come onto the market with 47kg Rough Fell Mules selling to £110 from Fishwick Bros, Longsleddale. 43kg Mules sold to £96 from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton.

Lightweight lambs today that were well finished readily sold between 240p/kg and 250p/kg.

CAST SHEEP The weekly sale of cast sheep saw an entry of 704 forward selling to another strong trade, with buyers competing for all classes and types. Heavy, pure bred ewes sold to a top price of £142 for a Charollais from R J Stott, Stainton with Texels selling to £131 from R & E Ladds, Kendal with others generally £125 t0 £130. Heavy Mules sold to a top price of £130 from K E Richards & Son, Howgill and T E, J S & S A Carruthers, Underbarrow. With

other pens regularly £110 to £125.

Hill bred ewes saw Cheviots sell to £116 from G, G U & D Swarbrick, Meathop, Swaledale to £97 from Calderside Farm, Garstang and Rough Fells also achieving £97 from E & K Bland, Gaisgill. Herdwicks sold to £83 D Thompson, Broughton In Furness.

A small entry of cull rams today saw Texels sell to £140 from W H & G Hodgson, Patton with other rams being predominantly hill bred and selling at £85 - £86 mark.

Vendors need to keep these numbers coming to satisfy buyers demands with interest in grazing type ewes increasing week on week.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Prime, Cast, Store and Weaner Pigs - Tuesday 10th August 2021 The first sale of pigs in August saw several new customers in attendance both buying and selling attracted to the popular and regular sale.

Prime pigs sold to a top price of £139 for a Pietrain x saddleback gilt from Wendy Stamper, Chipping. Who sold pure Saddleback boars to £122. Prime gilts sold to 135p/kg for Large White x from Richard Holden, Millom with Large White x hogs selling to 127p/kg from JM Navesey, Darwen. All prime pigs today averaged 117p/kg.

Several culls forward today with sows selling to £185 for a large white boar from Richard Holden, Millom and sows to £140 from Grey Braithwaite, Appleby and £130 Matthew Allen, Carnforth.

Only a small number of weaners forward selling to £40 for Large White x.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Store Lambs - Thursday 12th August 2021 The fortnightly sale of 4000 store lambs sold to a competitive ringside of buyers. Strong lambs sold to a premium today with some buyers showing caution over longer-term lambs.

Texel lambs once again led the way selling to £110 from JA Chapman, Kendal with many of the best Texel lambs regularly selling over the £100 mark today.

With Beltex selling to £97 from RA Batty, Selside. A run of Suffolk lambs from FK & F Woodhouse, Scorton sold to £90.50 with other Suffolk lambs selling to £87 from L & EA Ridding, Selside. Many runs of Continental store lambs were selling into the mid-80s mark today.

Mule lambs were eagerly bid for selling to a top of £86.50 from R Lawrence, Grange over Sands with others selling to £85.50 from RI Dixon, Low Newton.

Many of the best runs of Mule lambs were selling into the £80 mark with an overall average of £73 for 750 Mules sold.

Many more hill bred lambs were on the market today with Cheviots selling to £87.50 from WJ & EC Mckinley, Grizebeck with other Cheviots selling to £80 from Little & McClure, Cartmel. Rough Fells saw a top of £58 from L Potter, Orton with Swaledales selling to £53 from KD Harryman, Newlands. An overall average for 4000 lambs was £76 with many of these lambs being longer term keep.

Buyers are keen to purchase and vendors are advised to enter their lambs for the catalogue by Wednesday 18th August. Also this day is a Show for Continental and Suffolk Gimmer Lambs for pens of 10.

Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Calves, Stirks, OTM Cattle and Store Cattle - Friday 13th August 2021 CALVES AND WEANLINGS Lancaster continues to have a buoyant trade for calves, all types and sizes are openly welcome at Lancaster auction, with no discrimination against any sizes here! Leading the way this week was a 10-week-old British Blue calf from J&G Thornley, Kirkham with British Blue heifers from the same home selling to £430. The consignment of British Blue bulls from G & ME Woodhouse & Sons, Ellel sold to £440. British Blue heifers sold to £425 from Wannop Farm, Heaton-with- Oxcliffe with Charolais heifers from the same home selling to £385. Other noted prices for British Blue heifers were £415 from CR & A Baxter & Son, Middleton.

Angus bull calves sold to a top of £390 from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale. Dairy bull calves sold to a top of £350 for Fleckviehs from R & J Dodgson, Natland. Black and White bull calves topped at £100 twice from Wallbank Farms. 3 ½ -4-month-old Holstein bulls sold to £350 and £340 from Hannah Kent, Cockerham.

STORE CATTLE The short keep cattle trade today was as strong as ever with more desperately needed to fulfil our busy ring of buyer’s orders. The market topped at a very impressive £1650 from for a Hereford bullock from JM & AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. This was closely followed by a consignment of beef Shorthorn bullocks from GR & A Foy, Conder Green selling to £1570 and £1520 with others from the same home to £1450. A strong trade all round for native cattle in Lancaster saw a pen of three Angus bullocks sell to £1480 from W&A Cardwell, Stalmine. With a pen of three Hereford bullocks from JD & GM Bracken, Catterall sell to £1460. Other noted prices for Angus bullocks was £1400 from M Allen, Carnforth.

Continental bullocks twice sold to £1400 firstly for Limousins from CE & MA Hewitt, Forton with Limousin bullocks from J&O Galbriaith & Son, Endmoor achieving the same price. Plenty of bullocks today easily selling in excess of the £1300 mark.

The heifer trade today topped at £1340 for a pen of three British Blues from KH & D Holden & Son, Pilling with Angus heifers from the same home topping at £1290. Dairy bullocks sold to a top of £1300 for Black and Whites from JM & AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe with Montbeliardes achieving £1280 from MJ Waller, Lupton.

OTM CATTLE The weekly sale of cast cows had 85 forward selling to an overall market average of 142p/kg, with a larger quantity of parlour cows on the market. OTM steers led the way selling to 199.5p/kg from A Kirkby & Co, Pilling.

A strong trade and demand for beef cows on the market today, saw a Limousin cow sell to 194.5p/kg from AT Rogerson, Chipping that grossed at an impressive £1556. Also achieving 194.5p/kg was a Limousin cow from E Dodgson, Kendal which gross at £1356. This was closely followed by a Stablier cow selling to 189p/kg from JA&R Geldard & Sons, Levens whos consignment of cows topped at £1525. Black and white OTM heifers continued to meet plenty of demand, with well meated ones regularly selling around the 180p/kg mark. With these topping £1150 from JM&MH France & Son, Littledale. Best dairy cows today sold to the region of 170p/kg, these topping at £1385 for a Holstein Friesian from AW&AM Park & Sons, Ellel followed by other Friesian cows to £1235 from Pilling Hall, Pilling followed by £1222 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. Fleckvieh cows sold to £1286 from B&AC Barnes, Kirkby Lonsdale. Cast bulls sold to a top of £1512 for Fleckviehs from J&AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. With Herefords to £1436 from B&BA Rimmer, Scorton.
