Spring Lambs

Several consignments of spring lambs were forward today, selling to a top price of £195 for a pen of Suffolk cross from WN&D Smith & Son, Cockerham. Others achieved £185 from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth who also topped todays market with a Suffolk cross lambs at 439p/kg. Other well finished in specification lambs were regularly 415p/kg upwards, with an overall SQQ market average of 415p/kg achieved.

Prime Hoggs

The best bred and well finished prime hoggs continue to sell to a premium, with under finished and out of specification hoggs heavy discounted. The sale peaked at £228 for a Beltex cross from AG Butler, Hambleton with Texel cross to £200 from S Ayrton, Cockerham. Cheviots sold to £196 from J&H Davis, Cabus with this price also achieved for Texel cross from F&SG Sanderson, Woodplumpton and Masham from A Guy, Goosnargh. Other heavy well finished hoggs were regularly £180 to £200, with medium weights £165 to £180. The sale topped at 423p/kg for a Beltex cross with others regularly 390p/kg to 415p/kg, well finished stand weights were 360p/kg to 380p/kg, with leaner and out of specification hoggs ranging from 310p/kg to 340p/kg, depend on quality and type. An overall market average SQQ of 353p/kg was achieved.

Another strong entry of cull ewes were forward, which sold to an average of £126. Best continental ewes were regularly breaking the £200 barrier, selling to £230 for a Charolais cross from AJ Cardwell, Pilling with Mules to £180 from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth. Other stronger first cross ewes were £150 to £170 with medium meated ewes £125 to £140. Pure hill ewes sold to £180 for Swaledales from JA Simpton, Barnacre. Cull rams sold to £185 for Cheviots from A&J Smith, Ingleton.

Sheep with Lambs at Foot

The annual bank holiday prize show and sale of hoggs with lambs at foot saw a quality show presented before the judge Mr Neil Sanderson, Woodplumpton, who we thank for his time and expertise. Thanks also goes to our sponsors Grace Dobson, Laurence Pierce Wool Merchants and WCF Fuels. The first prize rosette was awarded to Mr D Preston, Caton for a pen of North Country Mules with Beltex cross lambs which later sold for £270, with the second prize pen achieving £250 again from Mr D Preston. The third prize pen from Mr J Bargh, Morecambe sold at £245. An entry of Cheviot Mules with Beltex cross lambs from W Pinter, Clitheroe sold to £250 with others at £245. There was plenty of interest with buyers looking to secure additional and replacement stock. Other breeding sheep today sold to £270 for Texel ewes with twins from A Birchall, Dolphinholme who sold singles at £215. Other Mule ewes with twin lambs sold to £215 from BR Harrison, Staveley. Sheep and lambs will continue to be sold every Monday at 11.30am following cull sheep, please advise the office of entries.

80 spring lambs were forward, with all selling to a sharp trade. Texels sold to £238 from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe. Others achieved £219 from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe who also sold Texel cross lambs to 500p/kg. Beltex cross lambs sold to £216 from J BL &I Ellis, New Hutton. Hampshire’s sold to £213 from J&O Galbraith & Son, Endmoor. An overall market average of 421p/kg was achieved for all sold.

Prime Hoggs

820 hoggs were forward with once again well reared and fed hoggs selling to a sharp trade and under finished hoggs meeting less demand this week. Smart bred Texels sold to £230 from GM&A Jackson, Little Eccleston with Beltex cross to £206 from RJ Byron, Woodplumpton. The best bred heavy hoggs were regularly £200 plus. 80% of todays sale would be made up of hill bred hoggs with Cheviots to £197 from Stockdale Farms, Sedbergh and other pens from the the same home to £191. SFB sold to £180 for a pen of thirty six from AW&D Brown, Ulverston with other pens to £176 from GM&A Jackson, Little Eccleston. Mule hoggs saw Cheviot Mules sold to £176 from DE&J Waine, Longsleddale who sold Masham to £171. Mules sold to £170 from RHM&S Boyren, Colton. A ring full of Herdwicks sold to £151 from I Benson, Ings.

Ewe numbers continue to rise with 604 local farmer sheep sold today, to an overall market averaged £116 with over 60% of the sale being leaner hill bred ewes. The best heavy pure and three quarter bred ewes sold to £270 for Texels from GA Metcalfe, Kirkby Stephen with others regularly £220 to £260. The best first cross ewes sold to £216 for Texel cross from PJ&ES Rogerson, Appleby with others regularly £180 to £210. The best Mules sold to £190 from P Whitton & Son, Burneside with other heavier end generally £150 to £170 and the next draw down £120 to £140. Pure hill ewes sold to £170 for Cheviots from Stockdale Farms, Sedbergh, Lleyns £160 from R Howard, Ulverston, Swaledales to £136 from JD&M Capstick, Millom, Rough Fells £134 from MW&EM Mason & Sons, Middleton and Dalesbreds £122 from Gibson & Berry, Endmoor. Cull rams sold to £205 for Continentals from G GU & D Swarbrick, Meathop with other heavier end rams regularly £180 to £200 and mediums £150 to £175. Hill rams sold to £175 for Welsh rams from Braestead Farm Ltd, Patterdale and £155 for Cheviots from JW&E Woof & Son, Sedbergh. Horned rams were generally £100 to £115.

710 live were forward with all selling to a fast trade from start to finish. Fully vaccinated Mule shearlings with Texel twin lambs sold to £340 from G&KM Atkinson, Colby who also sold Texel shearling to £320. Beltex cross shearlings with Beltex twin lambs sold to £310 from R Allinson & Son, kirkby Stephen. One crop Mule ewes with Texel twins sold to £305 from G&KM Atkinson, Colby. Aged Texel ewes sold to £300 from CR Alderson & Son, Kirkby Stephen. Many more hill ewes were forward today with Texdales sucking Texel lambs selling to £280 from D Carridice, Whinfell with Cheviots from the same home selling to £245. Mule hoggs with Suffolk lambs sold to £258 from RC Wharton & Son, Drybeck with other hoggs regularly £220 to £240.

Pedigree Sheep

Sale of Pedigree Individual Females saw top price of 480gns achieved for Texel Gimmer Hoggs from Forth House flock of IM Jaeban, Cockermouth with others from this same good home selling to 320gns. Pair of Pedigree Texel gimmer hoggs from Messrs Hewson, Carlisle sold to 350gns.

Great Annual Show & Sale of Hoggs with Lambs at Foot

A catalogue entry of 500 hoggs with lambs saw an outstanding run of hoggs forward, which were a credit to all our vendors. The pre sale judging was in the capable hands of Mr Frank Joel, who awarded the following results:

The sale topped with the pre sale champions from Winter Brothers, Clickham which sold to £420 for Mule hoggs with Suffolk lambs, who sold other pens of

Mules to £320. Other smart pens of Mules sold to £300 from JH&JE Taylor, Ainstable. Strong framed Mule hoggs were regularly selling at £260 to £280, with all Mules with lambs averaging £262.

All Continental hoggs were keenly sort after, with the best selling to £390 for a pen of five from DR Preston, Caton. Other pens sold to £355 from JH&JE Taylor, Ainstable. Pure bred Texel hoggs sold to £350 from RA Batty, Selside. Pens of Suffolk hoggs sold to £305 from TA&JA Dixon, Selside. The best pens of Continental bred hoggs were around the £300 mark, with the next level down £250 to £280 and an overall averaged of £279 achieved.

The second show and sale of hoggs with lambs at foot will take place on Tuesday 28th May with catalogue entries required by Wednesday 22nd May.

A special consigned of pure Texels shearlings and ewes with lambs from RA Batty, Selside saw the best sell to £520 with others to £450 and £400 numerous times.

Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Calves, OTM's, Stirks & Store Cattle. Friday 10th May 2024.

Calves & Weanlings

A reduced entry in the calf ring this Friday, with the good weather finally making an appearance. Trade was however on fire for both rearing calves and weaned calves. Topping the rearers at £460 was a British Blue bull from Walmsley Beef, Cockerham with other British Blue bulls at £410 from JP&C Robson, Garstang. A month old British Blue achieved £305 from Pickervance Farm, Kirkham. Rearing heifers also sold well, with British Blues to £450 from JP&C Robson, Garstang with others generally £350 upwards. Three week old British Blue heifers from Pickervance Farms, Kirkham sold to £235 and £210. Weaned calves were flying with the sale toppers being £750 for a pair of British Blue heifers from E&J Redmayne, Winmarleigh. Other weaned heifers achieved £640 for a trio of Herefords from E Lund & Son, Ingleton. PD Pye, Abbeystead also sold a trio of Hereford to £620. Weaned bulls topped at £680 for a British Blue from AW&AM Park, Ellel with others from this home £650. Younger recently weaned bulls sold to £585, £580 and £575 for Aberdeen Angus from J&G Thornley, Kirkham. More calves are required week on week at Lancaster.

Steer Calf Top Prices: Hereford: £635 Marl House.

Store Cattle

The store cattle trade matched the hot weather outside, with the best steers selling to £1880 for Charolais cross from Pilling Hall, Pilling with British Blue cross from £1840, Aberdeen Angus cross £1800, Limousin cross £1760 and Hereford cross £1680. A keen interest in cattle suitable for turn out, with these generally £1320 to £1500. All steers forward today sold to a market average of £1450.

Heifers sold to £1660 for Aberdeen Angus cross from WT Eastham & Sons, Goosnargh with British Blue cross selling to £1600, Limousins to £1580, Simmentals to £1500. As with the steers, all heifers suitable for turn out were met by a keen interest with these generally £1250 to £1400. All heifers forward averaged £1365.

OTM Cattle

A lighter show of cows were forward this week, due to farmers being in the field. All forward sold to a market averaged of 184p/kg. The best beef cows sold to 227.5p/kg for a Limousin from TA Chapman & Son, Kendal with other beef cows regularly 195p/kg to 215p/kg. Top grossing today being a Stabiliser from CR&M Wilson, Wipshire totalling £1741. The best bred parlour cows were 155p/kg to 180p/kg and smaller light weights 135p/kg to 150p/kg. Top grossing today a Holstein Friesian from AW&AM Park, Ellel totalling £1495.

31 OTM heifers averaged 221p/kg, with beef heifers to 259p/kg for a Hereford cross from JD EM JA Atkinson, Skelsmergh with Aberdeen Angus cross selling to £1887 from D&J Hay, Cockerham with others at £1837 from F&SG Sanderson, Woodplumpton. Dairy heifers sold to 249p/kg and £1734 for black and whites from W&C Gorst, Ellel with other better end dairy heifers 225p/kg to 240p/kg.

OTM steers sold to 254.5p/kg and £1654 for a heifer from A Kirkby & Co, Pilling and diary steers to 244.5p/kg and £1982 from F&SG Sanderson & Son, Woodplumpton.
